We obtain Gaussian upper bounds for heat kernels of higher order differential operators with Dirichlet boundary conditions on bounded domains in $\R^N$. The bounds exhibit explicitly the nature of the spatial decay of the heat kernel close to the boundary as well as the long-time exponential decay implied by the spectral gap. We make no smoothness assumptions on our operator coefficients which we assume only to be bounded and measurable

We report on new techniques and results in the regularity theory of general non-uniformly elliptic variational integrals. By means of a new potential theoretic approach we reproduce, in the non-uniformly elliptic setting, the optimal criteria for Lipschitz continuity known in the uniformly elliptic one and provide a unified approach between non-uniformly and uniformly elliptic problems.
We consider uniformly elliptic operators with Dirichlet or Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions on a domain $Ω$ in ${\mathbb{R}}^N$. We consider deformations $ϕ(Ω)$ of $Ω$ obtained by means of a locally Lipschitz homeomorphism $ϕ$ and we estimate the variation of the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues upon variation of $ϕ$. We prove general stability estimates without using uniform upper bounds for the gradients of the maps $ϕ$. As an application, we obtain estimates on the rate of convergence for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions when a domain with an outward cusp is approximated by a sequence of…
We obtain an explicit Hölder regularity result for viscosity solutions of a class of second order fully nonlinear equations leaded by operator that are neither convex/concave nor uniformly elliptic.
We give full boundary extensions to two fundamental estimates in the theory of elliptic PDE, the weak Harnack inequality and the quantitative strong maximum principle, for uniformly elliptic equations in non-divergence form.
We show, in a borderline case which was not covered before, the validity of nonlinear Calderón-Zygmund estimates for a class of non-uniformly elliptic problems driven by double phase energies.
In this paper, we obtain a uniform $W^{2,\varepsilon}$-estimate of solutions to the fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations on Riemannian manifolds with a lower bound of sectional curvature using the ABP method.
We analyze fine properties of solutions to quasilinear elliptic equations with double phase structure and characterize, in the terms of intrinsic Hausdorff measures, the removable sets for Hölder continuous solutions.
A priori estimates for the weak solutions the Dirichlet problem for the uniformly higher-order elliptic equations in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset \Rn$ in generalized weighted Sobolev-Morrey spaces are obtained.
We show that the rate of convergence of solutions of finite-difference approximations for uniformly elliptic Bellman's equations is of order at least $h^{2/3}$, where $h$ is the mesh size. The equations are considered in smooth bounded domains.
We obtain an error estimate between viscosity solutions and δ-viscosity solutions of nonhomogeneous fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations. The main assumption, besides uniform ellipticity, is that the nonlinearity is Lipschitz-continuous in space with linear growth in the Hessian. We also establish a rate of convergence for monotone and consistent finite difference approximation schemes for such equations.
We consider Fokker--Planck--Kolmogorov equations with unbounded coefficients and obtain upper estimates of solutions. We also obtain new estimates involving Lyapunov functions.
We study asymptotic behavior of sub-solutions to non-uniformly elliptic equations with nonstandard growth. In particular, Harnack type inequalities are proved. Our approach gives new results for the cases with (p,q) nonlinearity and generalized Orlicz growth.
We consider singular perturbations of eigenvalue problems. We prove that to these problems correspond simple eigenvalues and we study their asymptotic behavior. As a result, we prove global bifurcation results for non uniformly and fully nonlinear elliptic equations. These equations are defined on smooth enough bounded domains and the solutions belonging in these branches are smooth and positive.
We show that two classically known properties of positive supersolutions of uniformly elliptic PDEs, the boundary point principle (Hopf lemma) and global integrability, can be quantified with respect to each other. We obtain an extension to the boundary of the de Giorgi-Moser weak Harnack inequality, optimal with respect to the norms involved, for equations in divergence form.
We study local regularity properties for solutions of linear, non-uniformly elliptic equations. Assuming certain integrability conditions on the coefficient field, we prove local boundedness and Harnack inequality. The assumed integrability assumptions are essentially sharp and improve upon classical results by Trudinger [ARMA 1971]. We then apply the deterministic regularity results to the corrector equation in stochastic homogenization and establish sublinearity of the corrector.
In this paper, we establish various maximum principles and develop the method of moving planes and the sliding method (on general unbounded domains) for equations involving the uniformly elliptic nonlocal Bellman operator. As a consequence, we derive multiple applications of these maximum principles and the moving planes method. For instance, we prove symmetry, monotonicity and uniqueness results and asymptotic properties for solutions to various equations involving the uniformly elliptic nonlocal Bellman operator in bounded domains, unbounded domains, epigraph or $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. In particul…
Investigating for interior regularity of viscosity solutions to the fully nonlinear elliptic equation $$F(x,u,\triangledown u,\triangledown ^2 u)=0,$$ we establish the interior $C^{1+1}$ continuity under the assumptions that $F$ is uniformly elliptic, H$\ddot o$lder continuous and satisfies the natural structure conditions of fractional order, but without the concavity assumption of $F$. These assumptions are weaker and the result is stronger than that of Caffarelli and Wang[1], Chen[2].
We consider the problem of minimizing variational integrals defined on \cc{nonlinear} Sobolev spaces of competitors taking values into the sphere. The main novelty is that the underlying energy features a non-uniformly elliptic integrand exhibiting different polynomial growth conditions and no homogeneity. We develop a few intrinsic methods aimed at proving partial regularity of minima and providing techniques for treating larger classes of similar constrained non-uniformly elliptic variational problems. In order to give estimates for the singular sets we use a general family of Hausdorff type…
We prove that a viscosity solution of a uniformly elliptic, fully nonlinear equation is $C^{2,α}$ on the compliment of a closed set of Hausdorff dimension at most $ε$ less than the dimension. The equation is assumed to be $C^1$, and the constant $ε> 0$ depends only on the dimension and the ellipticity constants. The argument combines the $W^{2,ε}$ estimates of Lin with a result of Savin on the $C^{2,α}$ regularity of viscosity solutions which are close to quadratic polynomials.
We extend an inequality for harmonic functions, obtained in previous research by the authors, to the case of solutions of uniformly elliptic equations in divergence form, with merely measurable coefficients. The inequality for harmonic functions turned out to be a crucial ingredient in the study of the stability of the radial symmetry for Alexandrov's Soap Bubble Theorem and Serrin's problem. The proof of our inequality is based on a mean value property for elliptic operators by L. Caffarelli, proved in full detail by I. Blank and Z. Hao.
In this paper we prove an asymptotic $C^{1,γ}$-estimate for value functions of stochastic processes related to uniformly elliptic dynamic programming principles. As an application, this allows us to pass to the limit with a discrete gradient and then to obtain a $C^{1,γ}$-result for the corresponding limit PDE.
We give a simplified presentation of the obstacle problem approach to stochastic homogenization for elliptic equations in nondivergence form. Our argument also applies to equations which depend on the gradient of the unknown function. In the latter case, we overcome difficulties caused by a lack of estimates for the first derivatives of approximate correctors by modifying the perturbed test function argument to take advantage of the spreading of the contact set.
We prove a Liouville type theorem for arbitrarily growing positive viscosity supersolutions of fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations in halfspaces. Precisely, let $M^-_{λ, Λ}$ be the Pucci's inf- operator, defined as the infimum of all linear uniformly elliptic operators with ellipticity constants $Λ\geq λ>0$. Then, we prove that the inequality $M^-_{λ, Λ}(D^2u) +u^p \leq 0$ does not have any positive viscosity solution in a halfspace provided that $-1\leq p \leq (Λ/λn+1)/(Λ/λn-1)$, whereas positive solutions do exist if either $p < -1$ or $p > (Λ/λ(n-1)+2)/(Λ/λ(n-1))$. This will be acc…
We obtain pointwise lower bounds for heat kernels of higher order differential operators with Dirichlet boundary conditions on bounded domains in $\R^N$. The bounds exhibit explicitly the nature of the spatial decay of the heat kernel close to the boundary. We make no smoothness assumptions on our operator coefficients which we assume only to be bounded and measurable.
In this paper we investigate the critical exponents of two families of Pucci's extremal operators. The notion of critical exponent that we have chosen for these fully nonlinear operators whihc are not variational is that of threshold betweeen existence and nonexistence of the solutions for semilinear equations with pure power nonlinearities. Interesting new exponents appear in this context.
We obtain heat kernel estimates for a class of fourth order non-uniformly elliptic operators in two dimensions. Contrary to existing results, the operators considered have symbols that are not strongly convex. This rises certain difficulties as it is known that, as opposed to the strongly convex case, there is no absolute exponential constant. Our estimates involve sharp constants and Finsler-type distances that are induced by the operator symbol. The main result is based on two general hypotheses, a weighted Sobolev inequalitry and an interpolation inequality, which are related to the singula…
This paper is a contribution to the study of regularity theory for nonlinear elliptic equations. The aim of this paper is to establish some global estimates for non-uniformly elliptic in divergence form as follows \begin{align*} -\mathrm{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u + a(x)|\nabla u|^{q-2}\nabla u) = - \mathrm{div}(|\mathbf{F}|^{p-2}\mathbf{F} + a(x)|\mathbf{F}|^{q-2}\mathbf{F}), \end{align*} that arises from double phase functional problems. In particular, the main results provide the regularity estimates for the distributional solutions in terms of maximal and fractional maximal operators. T…
Corrector estimates constitute a key ingredient in the derivation of optimal convergence rates via two-scale expansion techniques in homogenization theory of random uniformly elliptic equations. The present work follows up - in terms of corrector estimates - on the recent work of Fischer and Neukamm (arXiv:1908.02273) which provides a quantitative stochastic homogenization theory of nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations under a spectral gap assumption. We establish optimal-order estimates (with respect to the scaling in the ratio between the microscopic and the macroscopic scale) for higher-o…
We show how a theorem about solvability in $C^{1,1}$ of special Isaacs equations can be used to obtain existence and uniqueness of viscosity solutions of general uniformly nondegenerate Isaacs equations. We apply it also to establish the $C^{1+χ}$ regularity of viscosity solutions and show that finite-difference approximations have an algebraic rate of convergence. The main coefficients of the Isaacs equations are supposed to be in $C^γ$ with $γ$ slightly less than $1/2$.
We consider the elliptic differential operator defined as the sum of the minimum and the maximum eigenvalue of the Hessian matrix, which can be viewed as a degenerate elliptic Isaacs operator, in dimension larger than two. Despite of nonlinearity, degeneracy, non-concavity and non-convexity, such operator generally enjoys the qualitative properties of the Laplace operator, as for instance maximum and comparison principles, ABP and Harnack inequalities, Liouville theorems for subsolutions or supersolutions. Existence and uniqueness for the Dirichlet problem are also proved as well as local and …
We investigate the homogenization through Gamma-convergence for the L^2(Ω)-weak topology of the conductivity functional with a zero-order term where the matrix-valued conductivity is assumed to be non strongly elliptic. Under proper assumptions, we show that the homogenized matrix A^\ast is provided by the classical homogenization formula. We also give algebraic conditions for two and three dimensional 1-periodic rank-one laminates such that the homogenization result holds. For this class of laminates, an explicit expression of A^\ast is provided which is a generalization of the classical lami…
We establish the local existence and the uniqueness of solutions of the heat equation with a nonlinear boundary condition for the initial data in uniformly local $L^r$ spaces. Furthermore, we study the sharp lower estimates of the blow-up time of the solutions with the initial data $λψ$ as $λ\to 0$ or $λ\to\infty$ and the lower blow-up estimates of the solutions.
This paper studies the regularity problem for block uniformly elliptic operators in divergence form with complex bounded measurable coefficients. We consider the case where the boundary data belongs to Lebesgue spaces with weights in the Muckenhoupt classes. Our results generalize those of S. Mayboroda (and those of P. Auscher and S. Stahlhut employing the first order method) who considered the unweighted case. To obtain our main results we use the weighted Hardy space theory associated with elliptic operators recently developed by the last two named authors. One of the novel contributions of …
We study the qualitative properties of functions belonging to the corresponding De Giorgi classes \begin{equation*} \int\limits_{B_{r(1-σ)}(x_{0})}\,\varPhi(x, |\nabla(u-k)_{\pm}|)\,dx \leqslant γ\,\int\limits_{B_{r}(x_{0})}\,\varPhi\bigg(x, \frac{(u-k)_{\pm}}{σr}\bigg)\,dx, \end{equation*} where $σ$, $r \in (0,1)$, $k\in \mathbb{R}$ and the function $\varPhi$ satisfies the non-logarithmic condition \begin{equation*} \bigg(r^{-n}\int\limits_{B_{r}(x_{0})}[\varPhi\big(x,\frac{v}{r}\big)]^{s}\,dx\bigg)^{\frac{1}{s}}\bigg(r^{-n}\int\limits_{B_{r}(x_{0})}[\varPhi\big(x,\frac{v}{r}\big)]^{-t}\,dx\b…
We consider a boundary value problem for the Dirac equation in a smooth, asymptotically flat Lorentzian manifold admitting a Killing field which is timelike near and tangential to the boundary. A self-adjoint extension of the Dirac Hamiltonian is constructed. Our results also apply to the situation that the space-time includes horizons, where the Hamiltonian fails to be elliptic.
In the Fermi Lectures on the obstacle problem in 1998, Caffarelli gave a proof of the mean value theorem which extends to general divergence form uniformly elliptic operators. In the general setting, the result shows that for any such operator $L$ and at any point $x_0$ in the domain, there exists a nested family of sets $\{ D_r(x_0) \}$ where the average over any of those sets is related to the value of the function at $x_0.$ Although it is known that the $\{ D_r(x_0) \}$ are nested and are comparable to balls in the sense that there exists $c, C$ depending only on $L$ such that $B_{cr}(x_0) …
We provide regularity results at the boundary for continuous viscosity solutions to nonconvex fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations and inequalities in Euclidian domains. We show that (i) any solution of two sided inequalities with Pucci extremal operators is $C^{1,α}$ on the boundary; (ii) the solution of the Dirichlet problem for fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations is $C^{2,α}$ on the boundary; (iii) corresponding asymptotic expansions hold. This is an extension to viscosity solutions of the classical Krylov estimates for smooth solutions.
In this paper, we study the large time behavior of solutions of a class of parabolic fully nonlinear integro-differential equations in a periodic setting. In order to do so, we first solve the ergodic problem}(or cell problem), i.e. we construct solutions of the form $λt + v(x)$. We then prove that solutions of the Cauchy problem look like those specific solutions as time goes to infinity. We face two key difficulties to carry out this classical program: (i) the fact that we handle the case of "mixed operators" for which the required ellipticity comes from a combination of the properties of th…
