This paper treats the isometries of metric spaces of quantum states. We consider two metrics on the set all quantum states, namely the Bures metric and the one which comes from the trace-norm. We describe all the corresponding (nonlinear) isometries and also present similar results concerning the space of all (non-normalized) density operators.
In this paper we characterize the surjective linear variation norm isometries on JB-algebras. Variation norm isometries are precisely the maps that preserve the maximal deviation, the quantum analogue of the standard deviation, which plays an important role in quantum statistics. Consequently, we characterize the Hilbert's metric isometries on cones in JB-algebras.
In this article we characterize the extreme points of the unit ball of a non-commutative (quantum) Lorentz space associated with a semi-finite von Neumann algebra. This enables us to show that surjective isometries between non-commutative Lorentz spaces are projection disjointness preserving and finiteness preserving, which facilitates a characterization of the structure of these isometries.
Under the mild condition of continuity at a single point we describe all the bijections of the set of all partial isometries on a Hilbert space which preserve the order and the orthogonality in both directions. Moreover, we present a natural analogue of Wigner's theorem on quantum mechanical symmetries for the set of all rank-1 partial isometries.

We discuss the half-liberation operation $X\to X^*$, for the algebraic submanifolds of the unit sphere, $X\subset S^{N-1}_\mathbb C$. There are several ways of constructing this correspondence, and we take them into account. Our main results concern the computation of the affine quantum isometry group $G^+(X^*)$, for the sphere itself.
We introduce and study two new examples of noncommutative spheres: the half-liberated sphere, and the free sphere. Together with the usual sphere, these two spheres have the property that the corresponding quantum isometry group is "easy", in the representation theory sense. We present as well some general comments on the axiomatization problem, and on the "untwisted" and "non-easy" case.
The sphere $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R$ has a half-liberated analogue $S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,*}$, and a free analogue $S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,+}$. This is a presentation of the construction and main properties of these noncommutative spheres, $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R\subset S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,*}\subset S^{N-1}_{\mathbb R,+}$, and of their quantum isometry groups.
We formulate a quantum group analogue of the group of orinetation-preserving Riemannian isometries of a compact Riemannian spin manifold, more generally, of a (possibly $R$-twisted in the sense of a paper of one of the authors, and of compact type) spectral triple. The main advantage of this formulation, which is directly in terms of the Dirac operator, is that it does not need the existence of any `good ' Laplacian as in our previous works on quantum isometry groups. Several interesting examples, including those coming from Rieffel-type deformation as well as the equivariant spectral triples …
The real sphere $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R$ appears as increasing union, over $d\in\{1,...,N\}$, of its "polygonal" versions $S^{N-1,d-1}_\mathbb R=\{x\in S^{N-1}_\mathbb R|x_{i_0}... x_{i_d}=0,\forall i_0,...,i_d\ {\rm distinct}\}$. Motivated by general classification questions for the undeformed noncommutative spheres, smooth or not, we study here the quantum isometries of $S^{N-1,d-1}_\mathbb R$, and of its various noncommutative analogues, obtained via liberation and twisting. We discuss as well a complex version of these results, with $S^{N-1}_\mathbb R$ replaced by the complex sphere $S^{N-1}_\m…
The partial isometries of $\mathbb R^N,\mathbb C^N$ form compact semigroups $\widetilde{O}_N,\widetilde{U}_N$. We discuss here the liberation question for these semigroups, and for their discrete versions $\widetilde{H}_N,\widetilde{K}_N$. Our main results concern the construction of half-liberations $\widetilde{H}_N^\times,\widetilde{K}_N^\times,\widetilde{O}_N^\times,\widetilde{U}_N^\times$ and of liberations $\widetilde{H}_N^+,\widetilde{K}_N^+,\widetilde{O}_N^+,\widetilde{U}_N^+$. We include a detailed algebraic and probabilistic study of all these objects, justifying our "half-liberation"…
If a compact quantum group acts isometrically on a (possibly discon- nected) compact smooth Riemannian manifold such that the action commutes with the Laplacian then it is known that the differential of the action preserves Rieman- nian inner product on forms. In this note, we prove a partial converse to this, under the additional assumption that the manifold is ori- ented and the action preserves the orientation in a suitable sense. Using this an alternative line of arguments is given for proving that there is no quantum isometry for a compact, connected, Riemannian manifold.
We show that countable metric spaces always have quantum isometry groups, thus extending the class of metric spaces known to possess such universal quantum-group actions. Motivated by this existence problem we define and study the notion of loose embeddability of a metric space $(X,d_X)$ into another, $(Y,d_Y)$: the existence of an injective continuous map that preserves both equalities and inequalities of distances. We show that $0$-dimensional compact metric spaces are "generically" loosely embeddable into the real line, even though not even all countable metric spaces are.
We prove that a compact quantum group with faithful Haar state which has a faithful action on a compact space must be a Kac algebra, with bounded antipode and the square of the antipode being identity. The main tool in proving this is the theory of ergodic quantum group action on $C^*$ algebras. Using the above fact, we also formulate a definition of isometric action of a compact quantum group on a compact metric space, generalizing the definition given by Banica for finite metric spaces, and prove for certain special class of metric spaces the existence of the universal object in the category…
Given locally compact quantum groups $\G_1$ and $\G_2$, we show that if the convolution algebras $L^1(\G_1)$ and $L^1(\G_2)$ are isometrically isomorphic as algebras, then $\G_1$ is isomorphic either to $\G_2$ or the commutant $\G_2'$. Furthermore, given an isometric algebra isomorphism $θ:L^1(\G_2) \rightarrow L^1(\G_1)$, the adjoint is a *-isomorphism between $L^\infty(\G_1)$ and either $L^\infty(\G_2)$ or its commutant, composed with a twist given by a member of the intrinsic group of $L^\infty(\G_2)$. This extends known results for Kac algebras (although our proofs are somewhat different) …
We generalize Banica's construction of the quantum isometry group of a metric space to the class of quantum metric spaces in the sense of Kuperberg and Weaver. We also introduce quantum isometries between two quantum metric spaces, and we show that if a pair of quantum metric spaces are algebraically quantum isometric, then their quantum isometry groups are monoidally equivalent. Motivated by the recent work on the graph isomorphism game, we introduce a new two-player non-local game called the metric isometry game, where players can win classically if and only if the metric spaces are isometri…
We show that a sequence $\{Φ_n\}$ of quantum channels strongly converges to a quantum channel $Φ_0$ if and only if there exist a common environment for all the channels and a corresponding sequence $\{V_n\}$ of Stinespring isometries strongly converging to a Stinespring isometry $V_0$ of the channel $Φ_0$. We also give a quantitative description of the above characterization of the strong convergence in terms of the appropriate metrics on the sets of quantum channels and Stinespring isometries. As a result, the uniform selective continuity of the complementary operation with respect to the str…
We study the metric aspect of the Moyal plane from Connes' noncommutative geometry point of view. First, we compute Connes' spectral distance associated with the natural isometric action of R^2 on the algebra of the Moyal plane A. We show that the distance between any state of A and any of its translated is precisely the amplitude of the translation. As a consequence, we obtain the spectral distance between coherent states of the quantum harmonic oscillator as the Euclidean distance on the plane. We investigate the classical limit, showing that the set of coherent states equipped with Connes' …
We give a general scheme for constructing faithful actions of genuine (noncommutative as $C^*$ algebra) compact quantum groups on classical topological spaces. Using this, we show that: (i) a compact connected classical space can have a faithful action by a genuine compact quantum group, and (ii) there exists a spectral triple on a classical connected compact space for which the quantum group of orientation and volume preserving isometries (in the sense of \cite{qorient}) is a genuine quantum group.
The representations of a group of gauge automorphisms of the canonical commutation or anticommutation relations which appear on the Hilbert spaces of isometries H_ρimplementing quasi-free endomorphisms ρon Fock space are studied. Such a representation, which characterizes the "charge" of ρin local quantum field theory, is determined by the Fock space structure of H_ρitself: Together with a "basic" representation of the group, all higher symmetric or antisymmetric tensor powers thereof also appear. Hence ρis reducible unless it is an automorphism. It is further shown by the example of the massl…
We consider compact matrix quantum groups whose fundamental corepresentation matrix has entries which are partial isometries with central support. We show that such quantum groups have a simple representation as semi-direct product quantum groups of a group dual quantum group by an action of a permutation group. This general result allows us to completely classify easy quantum groups with the above property by certain reflection groups. We give four applications of our result. First, there are uncountably many easy quantum groups. Second, there are non-easy quantum groups between the free orth…
