We show that a sequence $\{Φ_n\}$ of quantum channels strongly converges to a quantum channel $Φ_0$ if and only if there exist a common environment for all the channels and a corresponding sequence $\{V_n\}$ of Stinespring isometries strongly converging to a Stinespring isometry $V_0$ of the channel $Φ_0$.
We also give a quantitative description of the above characterization of the strong convergence in terms of the appropriate metrics on the sets of quantum channels and Stinespring isometries. As a result, the uniform selective continuity of the complementary operation with respect to the strong convergence is established.
We show discontinuity of the unitary dilation by constructing a strongly converging sequence of channels which can not be represented as a reduction of a strongly converging sequence of unitary channels.
The Stinespring representation of strongly converging sequences of quantum channels allows to prove the lower semicontinuity of the entropic disturbance as a function of a pair (channel, input ensemble). Some corollaries of this property are considered.

We prove a finite-dimensional covariant Stinespring theorem for compact quantum groups. Let G be a compact quantum group, and let T:= Rep(G) be the rigid C*-tensor category of finite-dimensional continuous unitary representations of G. Let Mod(T) be the rigid C*-2-category of cofinite semisimple finitely decomposable T-module categories. We show that finite-dimensional G-C*-algebras can be identified with equivalence classes of 1-morphisms out of the object T in Mod(T). For 1-morphisms X: T -> M1, Y: T -> M2, we show that covariant completely positive maps between the corresponding G-C*-algebr…
We present a universal construction that relates reversible dynamics on open systems to arbitrary dynamics on closed systems: the restriction affine completion of a monoidal restriction category quotiented by well-pointedness. This categorical completion encompasses both quantum channels, via Stinespring dilation, and classical computing, via Bennett's method. Moreover, in these two cases, we show how our construction can be essentially 'undone' by a further universal construction. This shows how both mixed quantum theory and classical computation rest on entirely reversible foundations.
We show that every finite-dimensional quantum system with Markovian (i.e., GKLS-generated) time evolution has an autonomous unitary dilation which can be dynamically decoupled. Since there is also always an autonomous unitary dilation which cannot be dynamically decoupled, this highlights the role of dilations in the control of quantum noise. We construct our dilation via a time-dependent version of Stinespring in combination with Howland's clock Hamiltonian and certain point-localised states, which may be regarded as a C*-algebraic analogue of improper bra-ket position eigenstates and which a…
We present in this paper that the CHSH game admits one and only one optimal state and so remove all ambiguity of representations. More precisely, we use the well-known universal description of quantum commuting correlations as state space on the universal algebra for two player games, and so allows us to unambigiously compare quantum strategies as states on this common algebra. As such we find that the CHSH game leaves a single optimal state on this common algebra. In turn passing to any non-minimal Stinespring dilation for this unique optimal state is the only source of ambiguity (including s…
We compare two sets of multimode quantum channels acting on a finite collection of harmonic oscillators: (a) the set of linear bosonic channels, whose action is described as a linear transformation at the phase space level; and (b) Gaussian dilatable channels, that admit a Stinespring dilation involving a Gaussian unitary. Our main result is that the set (a) coincides with the closure of (b) with respect to the strong operator topology. We also present an example of a channel in (a) which is not in (b), implying that taking the closure is in general necessary. This provides a complete resoluti…
We introduce a graphical language for coherent control of general quantum channels inspired by practical quantum optical setups involving polarising beam splitters (PBS). As standard completely positive trace preserving maps are known not to be appropriate to represent coherently controlled quantum channels, we propose to instead use purified channels, an extension of Stinespring's dilation. We characterise the observational equivalence of purified channels in various coherent-control contexts, paving the way towards a faithful representation of quantum channels under coherent control.
Designing quantum algorithms for simulating quantum systems has seen enormous progress, yet few studies have been done to develop quantum algorithms for open quantum dynamics despite its importance in modeling the system-environment interaction found in most realistic physical models. In this work we propose and demonstrate a general quantum algorithm to evolve open quantum dynamics on quantum computing devices. The Kraus operators governing the time evolution can be converted into unitary matrices with minimal dilation guaranteed by the Sz.-Nagy theorem. This allows the evolution of the initi…

We introduce a class of quantum channels called passive-environment bosonic channels. These channels are relevant from a quantum thermodynamical viewpoint because they correspond to the energy-preserving linear coupling of a bosonic system with a bosonic environment that is in a passive state (no energy can be extracted from it by using a unitary transformation) followed by discarding the environment. The Fock-majorization relation defined in [New J. Phys. 18, 073047 (2016)] happens to be especially useful in this context as, unlike regular majorization, it connects the disorder of a state tog…
In a breakthrough, Hastings' showed that there exist quantum channels whose classical capacity is superadditive i.e. more classical information can be transmitted by quantum encoding strategies entangled across multiple channel uses as compared to unentangled quantum encoding strategies. Hastings' proof used Haar random unitaries to exhibit superadditivity. In this paper we show that a unitary chosen uniformly at random from an approximate $n^{2/3}$-design gives rise to a quantum channel with superadditive classical Holevo capacity, where $n$ is the dimension of the unitary exhibiting the Stin…
