Suppose that Omega is a bounded, piecewise smooth Euclidean domain. We prove that the boundary values (Cauchy data) of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on Omega with various boundary conditions are quantum ergodic if the classical billiard map (on the ball bundle of the boundary of Omega) is ergodic.
Our proof is based on the classical observation that the boundary value of an interior eigenfunction is an eigenfunction of an operator F_h on the boundary of Omega, where h^{-2} is equal to the eigenvalue. In the case of the Neumann boundary condition, F_h is the boundary integral operator induced by the double layer potential. We show that F_h is a semiclassical Fourier integral operator quantizing the billiard map plus a `small' remainder. We then use the quantum dyanmics defined by F_h at the boundary to prove the result, much as the quantum dynamics generated by the wave group were exploited in the work of Zelditch-Zworski (1996). Novelties include the facts that F_h is not unitary and (consequently) the boundary values are equidistributed by measures which are not invariant under the billiard map and which depend on the boundary conditions.
Consider $M$, a bounded domain in ${\mathbb R}^d$, which is a Riemanian manifold with piecewise smooth boundary and suppose that the billiard associated to the geodesic flow reflecting on the boundary acording to the laws of geometric optics is ergodic. We prove that the boundary value of the eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator with reasonable boundary conditions are asymptotically equidistributed in the boundary, extending previous results by Gérard, Leichtnam \cite{GeLe93-1} and Hassel, Zelditch \cite{HaZe02} obtained under the additional assumption of the convexity of $M$.
We prove that the Hecke--Maass eigenforms for a compact arithmetic triangle group have a growing number of nodal domains as the eigenvalue tends to $+\infty$. More generally the same is proved for eigenfunctions on negatively curved surfaces that are even or odd with respect to a geodesic symmetry and for which Quantum Unique Ergodicity holds.
We prove quantum ergodicity for the eigenfunctions of the pseudo-Laplacian on Riemannian surfaces with finitely many hyperbolic cusps and ergodic geodesic flow.
We prove an analogue of Sogge's local $L^p$ estimates for $L^p$ norms of restrictions of eigenfunctions to submanifolds, and use it to show that for quantum ergodic eigenfunctions one can get improvements of the results of Burq-Gérard-Tzvetkov, Hu, and Chen-Sogge. The improvements are logarithmic on negatively curved manifolds (without boundary) and by $o(1)$ for manifolds (with or without boundary) with ergodic geodesic flows. In the case of ergodic billiards with piecewise smooth boundary, we get $o(1)$ improvements on $L^\infty$ estimates of Cauchy data away from a shrinking neighborhood of…
The goal of this article is to draw new applications of small scale quantum ergodicity in nodal sets of eigenfunctions. We show that if quantum ergodicity holds on balls of shrinking radius $r(λ) \to 0$, then one can achieve improvements on the recent upper bounds of Logunov and Logunov-Malinnikova on the size of nodal sets, according to a certain power of $r(λ)$. We also show that the order of vanishing results of Donnelly-Fefferman and Dong can be improved. Since by the results of Han and Hezari-Rivière small scale QE holds on negatively curved manifolds at logarithmically shrinking rates, w…
For small range of $p>2$, we improve the $L^p$ bounds of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on negatively curved manifolds. Our improvement is by a power of logarithm for a full density sequence of eigenfunctions. We also derive improvements on the size of the nodal sets. Our proof is based on a quantum ergodicity property of independent interest, which holds for families of symbols supported in balls whose radius shrinks at a logarithmic rate.
We prove a quantum-ergodicity theorem on large graphs, for eigenfunctions of Schrödinger operators in a very general setting. We consider a sequence of finite graphs endowed with discrete Schrödinger operators, assumed to have a local weak limit. We assume that our graphs have few short loops, in other words that the limit model is a random rooted tree endowed with a random discrete Schrödinger operator. We show that absolutely continuous spectrum for the infinite model, reinforced by a good control of the moments of the Green function, imply "quantum ergodicity", a form of spatial delocalizat…
We examine high energy eigenfunctions for the Dirichlet Laplacian on domains where the billiard flow exhibits mixed dynamical behavior. (More generally, we consider semiclassical Schrodinger operators with mixed assumptions on the Hamiltonian flow.) Specificially, we assume that the billiard flow has an invariant ergodic component, U, and study defect measures, mu, of positivie density subsequences of eigenfunctions (and, more generally, of almost orthogonal quasimodes). We show that any defect measure associated to such a subsequence, when restricted to U, satisfies mu = c mu_L where mu_L is …
We prove a result of delocalization for the Anderson model on the regular tree (Bethe lattice). When the disorder is weak, it is known that large parts of the spectrum are a.s. purely absolutely continuous, and that the dynamical transport is ballistic. In this work, we prove that in such AC regime, the eigenfunctions are also delocalized in space, in the sense that if we consider a sequence of regular graphs converging to the regular tree, then the eigenfunctions become asymptotically uniformly distributed. The precise result is a quantum ergodicity theorem.
Consider a sequence of finite regular graphs (GN) converging, in the sense of Benjamini-Schramm, to the infinite regular tree. We study the induced quantum graphs with equilateral edge lengths, Kirchhoff conditions (possibly with a non-zero coupling constant $α$) and a symmetric potential U on the edges. We show that in the spectral regions where the infinite quantum tree has absolutely continuous spectrum, the eigenfunctions of the converging quantum graphs satisfy a quantum ergodicity theorem. In case $α$ = 0 and U = 0, the limit measure is the uniform measure on the edges. In general, it ha…
We prove a generalized version of the Quantum Ergodicity Theorem on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds without boundary. We apply it to prove some asymptotic properties on the distribution of typical eigenfunctions of the Laplacian in geometric situations where the Liouville measure is not (or not known to be) ergodic.
Consider the eigenfunctions $u$ for a ree rectangular membrane wo that $-Δu=λu$ on $\mathcal R(c,d)=(0,d)\times(0,d)$. In this note we show that if if $u>0$ on $\partial \mathcal R(c,d)) then $u\equiv C$ for some positive constant.
In this paper, we study the boundary traces of eigenfunctions on the boundary of a smooth and bounded domain. An identity derived by Bäcker, Fürstburger, Schubert, and Steiner, expressing (in some sense) the asymptotic completeness of the set of boundary traces in a frequency window of size O(1), is proved both for Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We then prove a semiclassical generalization of this identity.
We propose a version of the Quantum Ergodicity theorem on large regular graphs of fixed valency. This is a property of delocalization of "most" eigenfunctions. We consider expander graphs with few short cycles (for instance random large regular graphs). Our method mimics the proof of Quantum Ergodicity on manifolds: it uses microlocal analysis on regular trees.
We prove quantum ergodicity for certain orthonormal bases of $L^2(\mathbb{S}^2)$, consisting of joint eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on $\mathbb{S}^2$ and the discrete averaging operator over a finite set of rotations, generating a free group. If in addition the rotations are algebraic we give a quantified version of this result. The methods used also give a new, simplified proof of quantum ergodicity for large regular graphs.
Let $(Ω,g)$ be a compact, real-analytic Riemannian manifold with real-analytic boundary $\partial Ω.$ The harmonic extensions of the boundary Dirchlet-to-Neumann eigenfunctions are called Steklov eigenfunctions. We show that the Steklov eigenfuntions decay exponentially into the interior in terms of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann eigenvalues and give a sharp rate of decay to first order at the boundary. The proof uses the Poisson representation for the Steklov eigenfunctions combined with sharp $h$-microlocal concentration estimates for the boundary Dirichlet-to-Neumann eigenfunctions near the cosph…
In this paper we consider eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a planar domain with polygonal boundary with Dirichlet, Neumann, or mixed boundary conditions. The main result is a quantitative estimate on the $L^2$ mass of eigenfunctions near a point in terms of the distance to the nearest non-adjacent boundary face. In particular, eigenfunctions cannot concentrate completely at any one single point. The technique of proof is to use the commutator ideas from the recent work of the author \cite{Chr-tri,Chr-simp} on triangles and simplices.
We present a quantum ergodicity theorem for fixed spectral window and sequences of compact hyperbolic surfaces converging to the hyperbolic plane in the sense of Benjamini and Schramm. This addresses a question posed by Colin de Verdière. Our theorem is inspired by results for eigenfunctions on large regular graphs by Anantharaman and the first-named author. It applies in particular to eigenfunctions on compact arithmetic surfaces in the level aspect, which connects it to a question of Nelson on Maass forms. The proof is based on a wave propagation approach recently considered by Brooks, Linde…
The paper is concerned with the doubling estimates and vanishing order of the Steklov eigenfunction on the boundary of a smooth boundary domain $\mathbb R^n$. The eigenfunction is given by a Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We improve the doubling property shown by Lin and Bellova \cite{BL}. Furthermore, we show that the vanishing order of Steklov eigenfunction is everywhere less than $Cλ$ where $λ$ is the Steklov eigenvalue and $C$ depends only on $Ω$.
We consider a sequence of finite quantum graphs with few loops, so that they converge, in the sense of Benjamini-Schramm, to a random infinite quantum tree. We assume these quantum trees are spectrally delocalized in some interval $I$, in the sense that their spectrum in $I$ is purely absolutely continuous and their Green's functions are well controlled near the real axis. We furthermore suppose that the underlying sequence of discrete graphs is expanding. We deduce a quantum ergodicity result, showing that the eigenfunctions with eigenvalues lying in $I$ are spatially delocalized.
Let $e_ł(x)$ be an eigenfunction with respect to the Laplace-Beltrami operator $Δ_M$ on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ without boundary: $Δ_M e_ł=ł^2 e_ł$. We show the following gradient estimate of $e_ł$: for every $ł\geq 1$, there holds $ł\|e_ł\|_\infty/C\leq \|\nabla e_ł\|_\infty\leq Cł\|e_ł\|_\infty$, where $C$ is a positive constant depending only on $M$.
Let $u$ be an eigenfunction of the Laplacian on a compact manifold with boundary, with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, and let $-λ^2$ be the corresponding eigenvalue. We consider the problem of estimating the maximum of $u$ in terms of $λ$, for large $λ$, assuming $u$ is $L^2$-normalized. We prove that $\max_M u\leq C_M λ^{(n-1)/2}$, which is optimal for some $M$. Our proof simplifies some of the arguments used before for such problems. In order to make the article accessible to non-specialists, we review the 'wave equation method' (which has become standard in asymptotic eigenvalue …
We prove sharp upper and lower bounds for the nodal length of Steklov eigenfunctions on real-analytic Riemannian surfaces with boundary. The argument involves frequency function methods for harmonic functions in the interior of the surface as well as the construction of exponentially accurate approximations for the Steklov eigenfunctions near the boundary.
Let $e_ł(x)$ be a Neumann eigenfunction with respect to the positive Laplacian $Δ$ on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with boundary such that $Δ\, e_ł=ł^2 e_ł$ in the interior of $M$ and the normal derivative of $e_ł$ vanishes on the boundary of $M$. Let $χ_λ$ be the unit band spectral projection operator associated with the Neumann Laplacian and $f$ a square integrable function on $M$. We show the following gradient estimate for $χ_λ\,f$ as $λ\geq 1$: $\|\nabla\ χ_ł f\|_\infty\leq Cł\|χ_ł\f\|_\infty+ł^{-1}\|Δ χ_ł f\|_\infty$, where $C$ is a positive constant depending only on $M$. As a coro…
It is an open problem in general to prove that there exists a sequence of $Δ_g$-eigenfunctions $ϕ_{j_k}$ on a Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ for which the number $N(ϕ_{j_k}) $ of nodal domains tends to infinity with the eigenvalue. Our main result is that $N(ϕ_{j_k}) \to \infty$ along a subsequence of eigenvalues of density $1$ if the $(M, g)$ is a non-positively curved surface with concave boundary, i.e. a generalized Sinai or Lorentz billiard. Unlike the recent closely related work of Ghosh-Reznikov-Sarnak and of the authors on the nodal domain counting problem, the surfaces need not have any …
Let $(Ω,g)$ be a piecewise-smooth, bounded convex domain in $\R^2$ and consider $L^2$-normalized Neumann eigenfunctions $ϕ_λ$ with eigenvalue $λ^2$ and $u_λ:= ϕ_λ |_{\partial Ω}$ the associated Dirichlet data (ie. boundary restriction of $ϕ_λ$). Our first main result (Theorem \ref{T:non-con}) is a small-scale {\em non-concentration} estimate: We prove that for {\em any} $x_0 \in \overlineΩ,$ (including boundary corner points) and any $δ\in [0,1),$ $$ \| ϕ_h \|_{B(x_0,λ^{-δ})\cap Ω} = O(λ^{-δ/2}).$$ Our subsequent results involve applications of the nonconcentration estimate to upper bounds for…
This paper is part of a series concerning the isospectral problem for an ellipse. In this paper, we study Cauchy data of eigenfunctions of the ellipse with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. Using many classical results on ellipse eigenfunctions, we determine the microlocal defect measures of the Cauchy data of the eigenfunctions. The ellipse has integrable billiards, i.e. the boundary phase space is foliated by invariant curves of the billiard map. We prove that, for any invariant curve $C$, there exists a sequence of eigenfunctions whose Cauchy data concentrates on $C$. We use this re…
We prove quantum ergodicity for a family of periodic Schrödinger operators $H$ on periodic graphs. This means that most eigenfunctions of $H$ on large finite periodic graphs are equidistributed in some sense, hence delocalized. Our results cover the adjacency matrix on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, the triangular lattice, the honeycomb lattice, Cartesian products and periodic Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. The theorem applies more generally to any periodic Schrödinger operator satisfying an assumption on the Floquet eigenvalues.
This paper is a proceedings version of \cite{CHT-I}, in which we state a Quantum Ergodicity (QE) theorem on a 3D contact manifold, and in which we establish some properties of the Quantum Limits (QL). We consider a sub-Riemannian (sR) metric on a compact 3D manifold with an oriented contact distribution. There exists a privileged choice of the contact form, with an associated Reeb vector field and a canonical volume form that coincides with the Popp measure. We state a QE theorem for the eigenfunctions of any associated sR Laplacian, under the assumption that the Reeb flow is ergodic. The limi…
We give a new and self-contained proof of a generic version of the (former) Helgason conjecture. It says that for generic spectral parameters the Poisson transform is a topological isomorphism, with the inverse given by a boundary value map. Following Oshima's approach to a simplified definition of boundary values, and using the earlier work of Baouendi and Goulaouic on Fuchsian type equations, our proof is along the lines of our earlier work in the rank one distributional case, and works for both the hyperfunction and the distribution setting.
In this work a discontinuous boundary-value problem with retarded argument which contains spectral parameter in the transmission conditions at the point of discontinuity are investigated. We obtained asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions.
We relate two types of phase space distributions associated to eigenfunctions $ϕ_{ir_j}$ of the Laplacian on a compact hyperbolic surface $X_Γ$: (1) Wigner distributions $\int_{S^*\X} a dW_{ir_j}=< Op(a)ϕ_{ir_j}, ϕ_{ir_j}>_{L^2(\X)}$, which arise in quantum chaos. They are invariant under the wave group. (2) Patterson-Sullivan distributions $PS_{ir_j}$, which are the residues of the dynamical zeta-functions $\lcal(s; a): = \sum_γ\frac{e^{-sL_γ}}{1-e^{-L_γ}} \int_{γ_0} a$ (where the sum runs over closed geodesics) at the poles $s = {1/2} + ir_j$. They are invariant under the geodesic flow. We p…
Let $Ω$ be a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $C^{1}$ boundary and let $u_λ$ be a Dirichlet Laplace eigenfunction in $Ω$ with eigenvalue $λ$. We show that the $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the zero set of $u_λ$ does not exceed $C(Ω)\sqrtλ$. This result is new even for the case of domains with $C^\infty$-smooth boundary.
This paper is devoted to the analysis of Steklov eigenvalues and Steklov eigenfunctions on a class of warped product Riemannian manifolds $(M,g)$ whose boundary $\partial M$ consists in two distinct connected components $Γ_0$ and $Γ_1$. First, we show that the Steklov eigenvalues can be divided into two families $(λ_m^\pm)_{m \geq 0}$ which satisfy accurate asymptotics as $m \to \infty$. Second, we consider the associated Steklov eigenfunctions which are the harmonic extensions of the boundary Dirichlet to Neumann eigenfunctions. In the case of symmetric warped product, we prove that the Stekl…
We provide a limiting absorption principle for the self-adjoint realizations of Laplace operators corresponding to boundary conditions on (relatively open parts $Σ$ of) compact hypersurfaces $Γ=\partialΩ$, $Ω\subset{\mathbb{R}}^{n}$. For any of such self-adjoint operators we also provide the generalized eigenfunctions and the scattering matrix; both these objects are written in terms of operator-valued Weyl functions. We make use of a Krein-type formula which provides the resolvent difference between the operator corresponding to self-adjoint boundary conditions on the hypersurface and the fre…
We deal with the Sturm--Liouville operator $Ly=l(y)=-\dfrac{d^2y}{dx^2}+q(x)y,$ with Dirichlet--Neumann boundary conditions $ y(0)=y'(π)=0 $ in the space $L_2[0,π]$. We assume that the potential $q$ is complex-valued and has the form $q(x)=u'(x)$, where $u\in L_2[0,π]$. Here the derivative is treated in the distributional sense. Our aim is to obtain the detailed asymptotic formulae for eigenvalues and eigen- and associated functions of the operator $L$.
This is the first paper of a series in which we plan to study spectral asymptotics for sub-Riemannian Laplacians and to extend results that are classical in the Riemannian case concerning Weyl measures, quantum limits, quantum ergodicity, quasi-modes, trace formulae.Even if hypoelliptic operators have been well studied from the point of view of PDEs, global geometrical and dynamical aspects have not been the subject of much attention. As we will see, already in the simplest case, the statements of the results in the sub-Riemannian setting are quite different from those in the Riemannian one. L…
It has been empirically observed that eigenfunctions of Laplace's equation $-Δϕ= λϕ$ with Neumann boundary conditions sometimes localize near the boundary of the domain if that boundary is rough (say, fractal). This has some nontrivial implications in acoustics that has been put to real-life use (sound attenuation by noise-protective walls); this short paper describes the mathematical mechanism responsible for this and describes the quantitative strength of the phenomenon for some examples.
We study dynamical properties of the billiard flow on convex polyhedra away from a neighbourhood of the non-smooth part of the boundary, called ``pockets''. We prove there are only finitely many immersed periodic tubes missing the pockets and moreover establish a new quantitative estimate for the lengths of such tubes. This extends well-known results in dimension $2$. We then apply these dynamical results to prove a quantitative Laplace eigenfunction mass concentration near the pockets of convex polyhedral billiards. As a technical tool for proving our concentration results on irrational polyh…
We study the existence of Neumann eigenfunctions which do not change sign on the boundary of some special domains. We show that eigenfunctions which are strictly positive on the boundary exist on regular polygons with at least 5 sides, while on equilateral triangles and cubes it is not even possible to find an eigenfunction which is nonnegative on the boundary. We use analytic methods combined with symmetry arguments to prove the result for polygons with six or more sides. The case for the regular pentagon is harder. We develop a validated numerical method to prove this case, which involves it…
A simple sufficient condition on curved end of a straight cylinder is found that provides a localization of the principal eigenfunction of the mixed boundary value for the Laplace operator with the Dirichlet conditions on the lateral side. Namely, the eigenfunction concentrates in the vicinity of the ends and decays exponentially in the interior. Similar effects are observed in the Dirichlet and Neumann problems, too.
Consider the transmission eigenvalue problem for $u \in H^1(Ω)$ and $v\in H^1(Ω)$ associated with $(Ω; σ, \mathbf{n}^2)$, where $Ω$ is a ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N=2,3$. If $σ$ and $\mathbf{n}$ are both radially symmetric, namely they are functions of the radial parameter $r$ only, we show that there exists a sequence of transmission eigenfunctions $\{u_m, v_m\}_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ associated with $k_m\rightarrow+\infty$ as $m\rightarrow+\infty$ such that the $L^2$-energies of $v_m$'s are concentrated around $\partialΩ$. If $σ$ and $\mathbf{n}$ are both constant, we show the existence of transmi…
We prove sharp $L^p$ estimates for the Steklov eigenfunctions on compact manifolds with boundary in terms of their $L^2$ norms on the boundary. We prove it by establishing $L^p$ bounds for the harmonic extension operators as well as the spectral projection operators on the boundary. Moreover, we derive lower bounds on the size of nodal sets for a variation of the Steklov spectral problem. We consider a generalized version of the Steklov problem by adding a non-smooth potential on the boundary but some of our results are new even without potential.
For a compact locally symmetric space $\XG$ of non-positive curvature, we consider sequences of normalized joint eigenfunctions which belong to the principal spectrum of the algebra of invariant differential operators. Using an $h$-\psdiff\ calculus on $\XG$, we define and study lifted quantum limits as weak$^*$-limit points of Wigner distributions. The Helgason boundary values of the eigenfunctions allow us to construct Patterson--Sullivan distributions on the space of Weyl chambers. These distributions are asymptotic to lifted quantum limits and satisfy additional invariance properties, whic…
We study the discretization of a Dirichlet form on the Koch snowflake domain and its boundary with the property that both the interior and the boundary can support positive energy. We compute eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, and demonstrate the localization of high energy eigenfunctions on the boundary via a modification of an argument of Filoche and Mayboroda. Hölder continuity and uniform approximation of eigenfunctions are also discussed.
This paper is devoted to interior, i.e. away from the boundary, estimates for eigenfunctions of the fractional Laplacian in an Euclidean domain of $\mathbb R^d$.
