Given a (meromorphic) fibration $f:X\to Y$ where $X$ and $Y$ are compact complex manifolds of dimensions $n$ and $m$, we define $L_f$ to be the invertible subsheaf of the sheaf of holomorphic $m$-forms of $X$ given by the saturation of $f^*K_Y$, where $K_Y$ is the canonical sheaf of $Y$. We define the Kodaira dimension of the orbifold base $(Y,f)$ by that of $L_f$ and call the fibration to be of general type if this dimension is the maximal $\dime Y$. We call $X$ special if it does not have a general type fibration with positive dimensional base and call $f$ special if its general fibers are. We note that Iitaka and rationally connected fibrations are special. Our main theorem is that any compact complex $X$ has a special fibration of general type which dominates any fibration of general type and factors through any special fibration of general type from $X$ in the birational category, thus unique in this category. Also, the fibration has positive dimensional fibers if $X$ is not of general type thus resolving a problem in Mori's program for varieties with negative Kodaira dimension. Our main theorem is stated in the full orbifold context of log pairs as in Mori's program via which we give an application to the Albanese map of projective manifolds with nef anticanonical bundle a part of which was derived using positive charateristic techniques by Qi Zhang.
The existence of a Kodaira fibration, i.e., of a fibration of a compact complex surface $S$ onto a complex curve $B$ which is a differentiable but not a holomorphic bundle, forces the geographical slope $ ν(S) = c_1^2 (S) / c_2 (S)$ to lie in the interval $(2,3)$. But up to now all the known examples had slope $ ν(S) \leq 2 + 1/3$. In this paper we consider a special class of surfaces admitting two such Kodaira fibrations, and we can construct many new examples, showing in particular that there are such fibrations attaining the slope $ ν(S) = 2 + 2/3$. We are able to explicitly describe the mo…
Being inspired by Ross' construction of unstable products of certain smooth curves, we show that the product $C\times C$ of every smooth curve $C$ of genus at least 2 is not slope semistable with respect to certain polarisations. Besides, we produce examples of Kodaira-fibred surfaces of nonzero signature, which are not slope semistable with respect to some polarisations, and so they admit Kähler classes that do not contain any constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics.
A Kodaira fibration is a non-isotrivial fibration $f\colon S\rightarrow B$ from a smooth algebraic surface $S$ to a smooth algebraic curve $B$ such that all fibers are smooth algebraic curves of genus $g$. Such fibrations arise as complete curves inside the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_g$ of genus $g$ algebraic curves. We investigate here the possible connected monodromy groups of a Kodaira fibration in the case $g=3$ and classify which such groups can arise from a Kodaira fibration obtained as a general complete intersection curve inside a subvariety of $\mathcal{M}_3$ parametrizing curves whose…
Let $S \to C$ be a Kodaira fibration. Here we show that whether or not the algebraic surface $S$ is defined over a number field depends only on the biholomorphic class of its universal cover.
In this note, we verify that the complex Kodaira dimension $κ^h$ equals the symplectic Kodaira dimension $κ^s$ for smooth 4-manifolds with complex and symplectic structures. We also calculate the Kodaira dimension for many Lefschetz fibrations.
A Kodaira fibration is a compact, complex surface admitting a holomorphic submersion onto a complex curve, such that the fibers have nonconstant moduli. We consider Kodaira fibrations X with nontrivial invariant rational cohomology in degree 1, proving that if the dimension of the holomorphic invariants is 1 or 2, then X admits a branch covering over a product of curves inducing an isomorphism on rational cohomology in degree 1. We also study the class of Kodaira fibrations possessing a holomorphic section, and demonstrate that having a section imposes no restriction on possible monodromies.
In this paper, we will prove subadditivity of Kodaira dimensions for a fibration with possibly singular geometric generic fiber, under certain nefness and relative semi-ampleness conditions. As an application, for a fibration $f: X \to Y$ of a smooth projective threefold over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>5$, under the assumption that $Y$ is of general type and non-uniruled, we prove subadditivity of Kodaira dimensions when general fibers are smooth or when $K_{X/Y}$ is relatively big over $Y$.
We describe explicitly the possible degenerations of a class of double Kodaira fibrations in the moduli space of stable surfaces. Using deformation theory we also show that under some assumptions we get a connected component of the moduli space of stable surfaces.
Kodaira fibred surfaces are a remarkable example of projective classifying spaces, and there are still many intriguing open questions concerning them, especially the slope question. The topological characterization of Kodaira fibrations is emblematic of the use of topological methods in the study of moduli spaces of surfaces and higher dimensional complex algebraic varieties, and their compactifications. The paper contains some new results but is mostly a survey paper, dealing with fibrations, questions on monodromy and factorizations in the mapping class group, old and new results on Variatio…
Let $f:X\rightarrow Z$ be a separable fibration of relative dimension 1 between smooth projective varieties over an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic. We prove the subadditivity of Kodaira dimension $κ(X)\geqκ(Z)+κ(F)$, where $F$ is the generic geometric fiber of $f$, and $κ(F)$ is the Kodaira dimension of the normalization of $F$. Moreover, if $\dim X=2$ and $\dim Z=1$, we have a stronger inequality $κ(X)\geq κ(Z)+κ_1(F)$ where $κ_1(F)=κ(F,ω^o_F)$ is the Kodaira dimension of the dualizing sheaf $ω_F^o$.
Kodaira fibrations are surfaces of general type with a non-isotrivial fibration, which are differentiable fibre bundles. They are known to have positive signature divisible by $4$. Examples are known only with signature 16 and more. We review approaches to construct examples of low signature which admit two independent fibrations. Special attention is paid to ramified covers of product of curves which we analyse by studying the monodromy action for bundles of punctured curves. As a by-product we obtain a classification of all fix-point-free automorphisms on curves of genus at most $9$.
We study pluricanonical systems on smooth projective varieties of positive Kodaira dimension, following the approach of Hacon-McKernan, Takayama and Tsuji succesfully used in the case of varieties of general type. We prove a uniformity result for the Iitaka fibration of smooth projective varieties of positive Kodaira dimension, provided that the base of the Iitaka fibration is not uniruled, the variation of the fibration is maximal, and the generic fiber has a good minimal model.
We discuss the birational geometry and the Kodaira dimension of certain varieties previously constructed by Schreieder, proving that in any dimension they admit an elliptic fibration and they are not of general type. The $l$-dimensional variety $Y_n^l$, which is the quotient of the product of a certain curve $C_n$ by itself $l$ times by a group $G\simeq\left(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}\right)^{l-1}$ of automorphisms, was constructed by Schreieder to obtain varieties with prescribed Hodge numbers. If $n=3^c$ Schreieder constructed an explicit smooth birational model of it, and Flapan proved: the Kod…
We construct classes of Kähler groups that do not have finite classifying spaces and are not commensurable to subdirect products of surface groups. Each of these groups is the fundamental group of the generic fibre of a holomorphic map from a product of Kodaira fibrations onto an elliptic curve.
The fundamental group $π$ of a Kodaira fibration is, by definition, the extension of a surface group $Π_b$ by another surface group $Π_g$, i.e. \[ 1 \rightarrow Π_g \rightarrow π\rightarrow Π_b \rightarrow 1. \] Conversely, we can inquire about what conditions need to be satisfied by a group of that sort in order to be the fundamental group of a Kodaira fibration. In this short note we collect some restriction on the image of the classifying map $m \colon Π_b \to Γ_g$ in terms of the coinvariant homology of $Π_g$. In particular, we observe that if $π$ is the fundamental group of a Kodaira fibr…
A question of Griffiths-Schmid asks when the monodromy group of an algebraic family of complex varieties is arithmetic. We resolve this in the affirmative for the class of algebraic surfaces known as Atiyah-Kodaira manifolds, which have base and fibers equal to complete algebraic curves. Our methods are topological in nature and involve an analysis of the "geometric" monodromy, valued in the mapping class group of the fiber.
We study some special systems of generators on finite groups, introduced in previous work by the first author and called "diagonal double Kodaira structures", in order to investigate non-abelian, finite quotients of the pure braid group on two strands $\mathsf{P}_2(Σ_b)$, where $Σ_b$ is a closed Riemann surface of genus $b$. In particular, we prove that, if a finite group $G$ admits a diagonal double Kodaira structure, then $|G|\geq 32$, and equality holds if and only if $G$ is extra-special. In the last section, as a geometrical application of our algebraic results, we construct two $3$-dimen…
We show, using [14], that a smooth projective fibration f : X $\rightarrow$ Y between connected complex quasi-projective manifolds satisfies the equality $κ$(X) = $κ$(X y) + $κ$(Y) of Logarithmic Kodaira dimensions if its fibres X y admit a good minimal model. Without the last assumption, this was conjectured in [11]. Several cases are established in [13], which inspired the present text. Although the present results overlap with those of [13] in the projective case, the approach here is different, based on the r{ô}le played by birationally isotrivial fibrations, special manifolds and the core…
We study several geometric and group theoretical problems related to Kodaira fibrations, to more general families of Riemann surfaces, and to surface-by-surface groups. First we provide constraints on Kodaira fibrations that fiber in more than two distinct ways, addressing a question by Catanese and Salter about their existence. Then we show that if the fundamental group of a surface bundle over a surface is a ${\rm CAT}(0)$ group, the bundle must have injective monodromy (unless the monodromy has finite image). Finally, given a family of closed Riemann surfaces (of genus $\ge 2$) with injecti…
A D5 elliptic fibration is a fibration whose generic fiber is modeled by the complete intersection of two quadric surfaces in P3. They provide simple examples of elliptic fibrations admitting a rich spectrum of singular fibers (not all on the list of Kodaira) without introducing singularities in the total space of the fibration and therefore avoiding a discussion of their resolutions. We study systematically the fiber geometry of such fibrations using Segre symbols and compute several topological invariants. We present for the first time Sen's (orientifold) limits for D5 elliptic fibrations. T…
As was recently pointed out by McMullen and Taubes [Math. Res. Lett. 6 (1999) 681-696], there are 4-manifolds for which the diffeomorphism group does not act transitively on the deformation classes of orientation-compatible symplectic structures. This note points out some other 4-manifolds with this property which arise as the orientation-reversed versions of certain complex surfaces constructed by Kodaira [J. Analyse Math. 19 (1967) 207-215]. While this construction is arguably simpler than that of McMullen and Taubes, its simplicity comes at a price: the examples exhibited herein all have la…
In this paper we want to study the non-Kodaira fibres in a smooth equidimensional elliptic threefold. If the morphism to the Weierstrass model of the fibration is crepant, then we can locate the non-Kodaira fibres and give a description of their structure. In particular, they lie over the singular points of the (reduced) discriminant of the fibration and are contraction of a Kodaira fibre, whose type can be predicted using Tate's algorithm.
We exhibit new examples of double Kodaira fibrations by using finite Galois covers of a product $Σ_b \times Σ_b$, where $Σ_b$ is a smooth projective curve of genus $b \geq 2$. Each cover is obtained by providing an explicit group epimorphism from the pure braid group $\mathsf{P}_2(Σ_b)$ to some finite Heisenberg group. In this way, we are able to show that every curve of genus $b$ is the base of a double Kodaira fibration; moreover, the number of pairwise non-isomorphic Kodaira fibred surfaces fibering over a fixed curve $Σ_b$ is at least $\boldsymbolω(b+1)$, where $\boldsymbolω \colon \mathbb…
We study the Iitaka-Kodaira dimension of nef relative anti-canonical divisors. As a consequence, we prove that given a complex projective variety with klt singularities, if the anti-canonical divisor is nef, then the dimension of a general fibre of the maximal rationally connected fibration is at least the Iitaka-Kodaira dimension of the anti-canonical divisor.
Modifying the notion of numerically trivial foliation of a pseudo-effective line bundle L introduced by the author in math.AG/0304312 it can be shown that the leaves of this foliation have codimension bigger or equal to the numerical dimension of L as defined by Boucksom, Demailly, Paun and Peternell, math.AG/0405285. Furthermore, if the Kodaira dimension of L equals its numerical dimension the Kodaira-Iitaka fibration is its numerically trivial foliation. Both statements together yield a sufficient criterion for L not being abundant.
We prove that for any smooth complex projective threefold of Kodaira dimension one, the $m$-th pluricanonical map is birational to the Iitaka fibration for every $m\geq5868$ and divisible by $12$.
We show that automorphism groups of Hopf and Kodaira surfaces have unbounded finite subgroups. For elliptic fibrations on Hopf, Kodaira, bielliptic, and K3 surfaces, we make some observations on finite groups acting along the fibers and on the base of such a fibration.
A vector bundle on a smooth projective variety, if it is generically generated by global sections, yields a rational map to a Grassmannian, called Kodaira map. We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the Kodaira maps for the symmetric powers of a vector bundle, and we show that these maps stabilize to a map dominating all of them, as it happens for a line bundle via the Iitka fibration. Through this Iitaka-type construction, applied to the cotangent bundle, we give a new characterization of Abelian varieties.
In this paper we will prove a uniformity result for the Iitaka fibration $f:X \rightarrow Y$, provided that the generic fiber has a good minimal model and the variation of $f$ is zero or that $κ(X)=\rm{dim}(X)-1$.
Arakelov-Parshin rigidity is concerned with varieties mapping rigidly to the moduli stack M_h of canonically polarized manifolds. Affirmative answer for any class of maps implies finiteness of the given class. This article studies Arakelov-Parshin rigidity on an open subspace of M_h, on the locus KF_h of iterated Kodaira fibrations. First, we prove rigidity for all complete curves mapping finitely onto KF_h. Then, for generic affine curves mapping into KF_h, rigidity is shown when deg h =2. The method used in the latter part is showing that the iterated Kodaira-Spencer map is injective.
We prove the effectiveness of the log Iitaka fibration in Kodaira codimension two for varieties of dimension$\le 4$. In particular, we finish the proof of effective log Iitaka fibration in dimension two. Also, we show that for the log Iitaka fibration, if the fiber is of dimension two, the denominator of the moduli part is bounded.
This is the second of a series of papers where we study the plurigenera, the Kodaira dimension and the Iitaka dimension on compact almost complex manifolds. By using the pseudoholomorphic pluricanonical map, we define the second version of Kodaira dimension as well as Iitaka dimension on compact almost complex manifolds. We show the almost complex structures with the top Kodaira dimension are integrable. For compact almost complex 4-manifolds with Kodaira dimension one, we obtain elliptic fibration like structural description. Some vanishing theorems in complex geometry are generalized to the …
We show that the M-canonical map of an n-dimensional complex projective manifold X of Kodaira dimension two is birational to an Iitaka fibration for a computable positive integer M. M depends on the index b of a general fibre F of the Iitaka fibration and on the Betti number of the canonical covering of F, In particular, M is a universal constant if the dimension n is smaller than or equal to 4.
It is conjectured that the moduli b-divisor of the Kawamata-Kodaira canonical bundle formula associated to a klt-trivial fibration $(X,B)\to Z$ is semi-ample. In this paper, we show the semi-ampleness of an arbitrarily small perturbation of the moduli b-divisor by a fixed appropriate divisor which roughly speaking comes from a section of $K_X+B$. We apply the above result to settle a conjecture of Fujino and Gongyo: if $f\colon X\to Z$ is a smooth surjective morphism of smooth projective varieties with $-K_X$ semi-ample, then $-K_Z$ is also semi-ample. We list several counter-examples to show …
We sketch a proof of the abundance conjecture that the Kodaira dimension of a compact complex algebraic manifold equals its numerical Kodaira dimension. The proof consists of the following three parts: (i) the case of numerical Kodaira dimension zero, (ii) the general case under the assumption of the coincidence of the numerically trivial foliation and fibration for the canonical bundle, and (iii) the verification of the coincidence of the numerically trivial foliation and fibration for the canonical bundle. Besides the use of standard techniques such as the L2 estimates of d-bar, the first pa…
We give a Kodaira-type classification of general singular fibers of a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration in Fujiki's class $\mathcal C$. Our approach is based on the study of the characteristic vector field of the discriminantal hypersurface, which naturally arises from the defining equation of the hypersurface via the symplectic form. As an application, we show that the characteristic foliation of the discriminantal hypersurface has algebraic leaves which are either rational curves or smooth elliptic curves.
For every smooth complex projective variety $W$ of dimension $d$ and nonnegative Kodaira dimension, we show the existence of a universal constant $m$ depending only on $d$ and two natural invariants of the very general fibres of an Iitaka fibration of $W$ such that the pluricanonical system $|mK_W|$ defines an Iitaka fibration. This is a consequence of a more general result on polarized adjoint divisors. In order to prove these results we develop a generalized theory of pairs, singularities, log canonical thresholds, adjunction, etc.
We prove an analogue of Fujino and Mori's ``bounding the denominators'' in the log canonical bundle formula (see also Prokhorov and Shokurov) for Kawamata log terminal pairs of relative dimension one. As an application we prove that for a klt pair $(X,Δ)$ of Kodaira codimension one and dimension at most three such that the coefficients of $Δ$ are in a DCC set $\mathcal{A}$, there is a natural number $N$ that depends only on $\mathcal{A}$ for which the round down of $\N(K_X+Δ)$ induces the Iitaka fibration. We also prove a birational boundedness result for klt surfaces of general type.
Let $f:X@>>>\Bbb P^1$ be a fibered surface with fibers of genus g>1. If f is semistable and non isotrivial we prove that X of non negative Kodaira dimension implies that the number s of singular fibers is at least 5. Information about the nature of X if s=6,5 and g<6 is given. If f is any relatively minimal fibration we bound by below K_f^2, the bound depending on g and the Kodaira dimension of X, a classification of rational surfaces with minimal K_f^2 is given. Moreover, we prove several properties of positivity for the linear system K_X+F (F a fibre of f). Examples of a K3 surfaces admittin…
U(1) symmetries play a central role in constructing phenomenologically viable F-theory compactifications that realize Grand Unified Theories (GUTs). In F-theory, gauge symmetries with abelian gauge factors are modeled by singular elliptic fibrations with additional rational sections, i.e. a non-trivial Mordell-Weil rank. To determine the full scope of possible low energy theories with abelian gauge factors, which allow for an F-theory realization, it is central to obtain a comprehensive list of all singular elliptic fibrations with extra sections. We answer this question for the case of one ab…
Motivated by work of Zhang from the early `90s, Medvedev and Scanlon formulated the following conjecture. Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ and let $X$ be a quasiprojective variety defined over $K$ endowed with a dominant rational self-map $Φ$. Then there exists a point $α\in X(K)$ with Zariski dense orbit under $Φ$ if and only if $Φ$ preserves no nontrivial rational fibration, i.e., there exists no non-constant rational function $f\in K(X)$ such that $Φ^*(f)=f$. The Medvedev-Scanlon conjecture holds when $K$ is uncountable. The case where $K$ is countable (e.g., $…
We prove that there exists a universal constant $r_3$ such that if $X$ is a smooth projective threefold over $\mathbb{C}$ with non-negative Kodaira dimension, then the linear system $|r K_X|$ admits a fibration that is birational to the Iitaka fibration as soon as $r \geq r_3$ and sufficiently divisible. This gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Hacon and McKernan in the case of threefolds. Viehweg and Zhang have posted a stronger result along these lines using different methods.
Given a positive singular hermitian metric of a pseudoeffective line bundle on a complex Kaehler manifold, a singular foliation is constructed satisfying certain analytic analogues of numerical conditions. This foliation refines Tsuji's numerically trivial fibration and the Iitaka fibration. Using almost positive singular hermitian metrics with analytic singularities on a pseudo-effective line bundle, a foliation is constructed refining the nef fibration. If the singularities of the foliation are isolated points, the codimension of the leaves is an upper bound to the numerical dimension of the…
