The test ideal $τ(R)$ of a ring $R$ of prime characteristic is an important object in the theory of tight closure. In this paper, we study a generalization of the test ideal, which is the ideal $τ(\a^t)$ associated to a given ideal $\a$ with rational exponent $t \ge 0$. We first prove a key lemma of this paper, which gives a characterization of the ideal $τ(\a^t)$. As applications of this key lemma, we generalize the preceding results on the behavior of the test ideal $τ(R)$. Moreover, we prove an analog of so-called Skoda's theorem, which is formulated algebraically via adjoint ideals by Lipman in his proof of the "modified Briançon--Skoda theorem."
In this paper, we introduce the concepts of strongly 2-absorbing primary ideals (resp., submodules) and strongly 2-absorbing ideals (resp., submodules) as generalizations of strongly prime ideals. Furthermore, we investigate some basic properties of these classes of ideals.
In this paper, we introduce a concept of $\mathfrak{X}$-element with respect to an $M$-closed set $\mathfrak{X}$ in multiplicative lattices and study properties of $\mathfrak{X}$-elements. For a particular $M$-closed subset $\mathfrak{X}$, we define the concept of $r$-element, $n$-element and $J$-element. These elements generalize the notion of $r$-ideals, $n$-ideals and $J$-ideals of a commutative ring with unity to multiplicative lattices. In fact, we prove that an ideal $I$ of a commutative ring $R$ with unity is a $n$-ideal ($J$-ideal) of $R$ if and only if it is an $n$-element ($J$-elemen…
In this study, we present the generalization of the concept of $r$-ideals in commutative rings with nonzero identity. Let $R$ be a commutative ring with $0\neq1$ and $L(R)$ be the lattice of all ideals of $R$. Suppose that $ϕ:L(R)\rightarrow L(R)\cup\left\{\emptyset\right\}$ is a function. A proper ideal $I$ of $R$ is called a $ϕ-r$-ideal of $R$ if whenever $ab\in I$ and $Ann(a)=(0)$ imply that $b\in I$ for each $a,b\in R.$ In addition to giving many properties of $ϕ-r$-ideal, we also examine the concept of $ϕ-r$-ideal in trivial ring extension and use them to characterize total quotient rings…
In this article, we introduce a generalization of the concept of graded $r$-ideals in graded commutative rings with nonzero unity. Let $G$ be a group, $R$ be a $G$-graded commutative ring with nonzero unity and $GI(R)$ be the set of all graded ideals of $R$. Suppose that $ϕ: GI(R)\rightarrow GI(R)\bigcup\{\emptyset\}$ is a function. A proper graded ideal $P$ of $R$ is called a graded $ϕ$-$r$-ideal of $R$ if whenever $x, y$ are homogeneous elements of $R$ such that $xy\in P-ϕ(P)$ and $Ann(x) =\{0\}$, then $y\in P$. Several properties of graded $ϕ$-$r$-ideals have been examined.
In this article, we introduce and study the concept of $ϕ$-2-absorbing quasi primary ideals in commutative rings. Let $R$ be a commutative ring with a nonzero identity and $L(R)$ be the lattice of all ideals of $R$. Suppose that $ϕ:L(R)\rightarrow L(R)\cup\left\{ \emptyset\right\} $ is a function. A proper ideal $I$ of $R$ is called a $ϕ$-2-absorbing quasiprimary ideal of $R$ if $a,b,c\in R$ and whenever $abc\in I-ϕ(I),$ then either $ab\in\sqrt{I}$ or $ac\in\sqrt{I}$ or $bc\in\sqrt{I}$. In addition to giving many properties of $ϕ$-2-absorbing quasi primary ideals, we also use them to character…
We study conjectured generalizations of a formula of Lech which relates the multiplicity of a finite colength ideal in an equicharacteristic local ring to its colength, and prove one of these generalizations involving the multiplicity of the maximal ideal times the finite colength ideal. We also propose a Lech-type formula that relates multiplicity and the number of generators. We prove the conjecture in dimension three and establish a weaker result in full generality.
We define a new generalization of n-absorbing ideals in commutative rings called n-absorbing I-primary ideals. We investigate some characterizations and properties of such new generalization. If P is an n-absorbing I-primary ideal of R and $\sqrt{IP} =I \sqrt{P} $, then $\sqrt{P}$ is a n-absorbing I-primary ideal of R. Also, if $\sqrt{P}$ is an (n-1)-absorbing ideal of R such that $\sqrt{I \sqrt{P}} \subseteq IP$, then P is an n-absorbing I-primary ideal of R.
We present an algebro-geometric perspective on some generalizations, due to S. Takagi, of the restriction theorem for multiplier ideals. The first version of the restriction theorem for multiplier ideals was discovered by Esnault and Viehweg. In a series of papers S. Takagi has discovered generalizations of the restriction theorem and some formulas for multiplier ideals that follow from the restriction theorem. He uses the technique of tight closure and reduction to positive characteristic. We are able to provide an algebro-geometric proof of generalizations of his restriction theorem and his …
In this paper, we introduce a new class of monomial ideals, called $d$-fixed ideals, which generalize the class of $p$-Borel ideals and show how some results for $p$-Borel ideals can be transfered to this new class. In particular, we give the form of a principal $d$-fixed ideal and we compute the socle of factors of these ideals. This allowed us to give a generalization of Pardue's formula,i.e. a formula of the regularity for a principal $d$-fixed ideal.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with identity. In this paper, we introduce the concept of quasi $J$-ideal which is a generalization of $J$-ideal. A proper ideal of $R$ is called a quasi $J$-ideal if its radical is a $J$-ideal. Many characterizations of quasi $J$-ideals in some special rings are obtained. We characterize rings in which every proper ideal is quasi $J$-ideal. Further, as a generalization of presimplifiable rings, we define the notion of quasi presimplifiable rings. We call a ring $R$ a quasi presimplifiable ring if whenever $a,b\in R$ and $a=ab$, then either $a$ is a nilpotent or $…
We introduce a new variant of tight closure associated to any fixed ideal $\a$, which we call $\a$-tight closure, and study various properties thereof. In our theory, the annihilator ideal $τ(\a)$ of all $\a$-tight closure relations, which is a generalization of the test ideal in the usual tight closure theory, plays a particularly important role. We prove the correspondence of the ideal $τ(\a)$ and the multiplier ideal associated to $\a$ (or, the adjoint of $\a$ in Lipman's sense) in normal $\Q$-Gorenstein rings reduced from characteristic zero to characteristic $p \gg 0$. Also, in fixed prim…
Let (R,m) be a local ring with prime ideals p and q such that p+q is an m-primary ideal. If R is regular and contains a field, and dim(R/p)+dim(R/q)=dim(R), we prove that p^{(r)}\cap q^{(n)}\subseteq m^{m+n} for all positive integers r and s. This is proved using a generalization of Serre's Intersection Theorem which we apply to a hypersurface R/fR. The generalization gives conditions that guarantee that Serre's bound on the intersection dimension dim(R/p)+dim(R/q) \leq dim(R) holds when R is nonregular.
We find sufficient conditions which imply equality of the finitistic test ideal and test ideal in rings of prime characteristic. Utilizing recent progress from the prime characteristic minimal model program we equate the notions of $F$-regular and strongly $F$-regular for 4-dimensional rings essentially of finite type over a field of prime characteristic $p>5$.
The third named author and Pérez proved that under certain conditions the test ideal of a module closure agrees with the trace ideal of the module closure. We use this fact to compute the test ideals of various rings with respect to the closures coming from their indecomposable maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules. We also give an easier way to compute the test ideal of a hypersurface ring in 3 variables coming from a module with a particular type of matrix factorization.
Test ideals are an important concept in tight closure theory and their behavior via flat base change can be very difficult to understand. Our paper presents results regarding this behavior under flat maps with reasonably nice (but far from smooth) fibers. This involves analyzing, in depth, a special type of ideal of test elements, called the CS test ideal. Besides providing new results, the paper also contains extensions of a theorem by G. Lyubeznik and K. E. Smith on the completely stable test ideal and of theorems by F. Enescu and, independently, M. Hashimoto on the behavior of F-rationality…
We give the resolutions of co-letterplace ideals of posets in a completely explicit, very simple form. This generalizes and simplifies a number of linear resolutions in the literature, among them the Eliahou-Kervaire resolutions of strongly stable ideals generated in a single degree. Our method is based on a general result of K. Yanagawa using the canonical module of a Cohen-Macaulay Stanley-Reisner ring. We discuss in detail how the canonical module may effectively be computed, and from this derive directly the resolutions. A surprising consequence is that we obtain a large class of simplicia…
We characterize the rings in which the equality $(τI:τ)= I^*$ holds for every ideal $I \subset R$. Under certain assumptions, these rings must be either weakly F-regular or one-dimensional.
In this paper, we obtain a generalization, in dimension $3$, of a theorem of David Rees about joint reductions of the bigraded filtration $\{ \overline{I^rJ^s}\}$ of complete ${\mathfrak m}$-primary ideals and vanishing of the second normal Hilbert coefficient $\overline{e}_2(IJ)$ where $R$ is a two-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay analytically unramified local ring with maximal ideal $\mathfrak m.$ This generalization is obtained as a consequence of a formula for the third local cohomology module of the extended Rees algebras of the $\mathbb Z^3$-graded filtration $\{\overline{I^rJ^sK^t}\}$ with su…
This paper investigates situations where a property of a ring can be tested on a set of "prime right ideals." Generalizing theorems of Cohen and Kaplansky, we show that every right ideal of a ring is finitely generated (resp. principal) iff every "prime right ideal" is finitely generated (resp. principal), where the phrase "prime right ideal" can be interpreted in one of many different ways. We also use our methods to show that other properties can be tested on special sets of right ideals, such as the right artinian property and various homological properties. Applying these methods, we prove…
This paper shows the existence of ideals whose localizations and completions at prime ideals are parameter test ideals of the localized and completed rings. We do this for Cohen-Macaulay localizations (resp., completions) of non-local rings, for generalized Cohen-Macaulay rings, and for non-local rings with isolated non Cohen-Macaulay points, each being an isolated non $F$-rational point. The tools used to prove this results are constructive in nature and as a consequence our results yield algorithms for the computation of these global parameter test ideals. Finally, we illustrate the power of…
We provide the sufficient conditions for Rees algebras of modules to be Cohen-Macaulay, which has been proven in the case of Rees algebras of ideals by Johnson-Ulrich and Goto-Nakamura-Nishida. As it turns out the generalization from ideals to modules is not just a routine generalization, but requires a great deal of technical development. We use the technique of generic Bourbaki ideals introduced by Simis, Ulrich and Vasconcelos to obtain the Cohen-Macaulayness of Rees Algebras of modules.
Let $R=k[x_1, ..., x_n]/(x_1^d + ... + x_n^d)$, where $k$ is a field of characteristic $p$, $p$ does not divide $d$ and $n \geq 3$. We describe a method for computing the test ideal for these diagonal hypersurface rings. This method involves using a characterization of test ideals in Gorenstein rings as well as developing a way to compute tight closures of certain ideals despite the lack of a general algorithm. In addition, we compute examples of test ideals in diagonal hypersurface rings of small characteristic (relative to $d$) including several that are not integrally closed. These examples…
We present a generalization of a polynomial factorization algorithm that works with ideals in maximal orders of global function fields. The method presented in this paper is intrinsic in the sense that it does not depend on the embedding of the ring of polynomials into the Dedekind domain in question.
In this note, we use the theory of test ideals and Cartier algebras to examine the interplay between the tight and integral closures in a local ring of positive characteristic. Using work of Schwede, we prove the abundance of strong test ideals, recovering some older fundamental results, and use this approach in concrete computations. In the second part of the paper, the case of Stanley-Reisner rings is fully examined.
We construct a generalize Ishida complex to compute the local cohomology with monomial support of modules over quotients of polynomial rings by cellular binomial ideals. As a consequence, we obtain a combinatorial criterion to determine when such a quotient is Cohen--Macaulay. In particular, this gives a Cohen--Macaulayness criterion for lattice ideals. We also prove a result relating the local cohomology with radical monomial ideal support of an affine semigroup ring to the local cohomology with maximal ideal support of the quotient of the affine semigroup ring by the radical monomial ideal. …
We discuss invariants of Cohen-Macaulay local rings that admit a canonical module $ω$. Attached to each such ring R, when $ω$ is an ideal, there are integers--the type of R, the reduction number of $ω$--that provide valuable metrics to express the deviation of R from being a Gorenstein ring. In arXiv:1701.05592 and arXiv:1711.09480 we enlarged this list with the canonical degree and the bi-canonical degree. In this work we extend the bi-canonical degree to rings where $ω$ is not necessarily an ideal. We also discuss generalizations to rings without canonical modules but admitting modules shari…
We introduce a generalization of the notion of local homology module, which we call a local homology module with respect to a pair of ideals $\left(I,J\right)$, and study its various properties such as vanishing, co-support and co-associated. We also discuss its connection with ordinary local homology.
In this paper, we study the notion of special ideals. We generalize the results on those as well as the algorithm obtained for finite dimensional power series rings by Mordechai Katzman and Wenliang Zhang to finite dimensional polynomial rings.
Let A be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension d and I an ideal in A. Let M be a finitely generated maximal Cohen-Macaulay A-module. Let I be a locally complete intersection ideal of analytic deviation one and reduction number at most one. We prove that the polynomial given by $length(Tor^{A}_{1}(M,A/I^{n+1}))$ either has degree d-1 or $F_I(M) $ is a free$F(I)-$$module.
Let $(R,\frak m)$ be a Noetherian local ring of prime characteristic $p>0$, and $t$ an integer such that $H_{\frak m}^j(R)/0^F_{H^j_{\frak m}(R)}$ has finite length for all $j<t$. The aim of this paper is to show that there exists an uniform bound for Frobenius test exponents of ideals generated by filter regular sequences of length at most $t$.
The notion of 2-AGL ring in dimension one which is a natural generalization of almost Gorenstein local ring is posed in terms of the rank of Sally modules of canonical ideals. The basic theory is developed, investigating also the case where the rings considered are numerical semigroup rings over fields. Examples are explored.
We show that the second power of the cover ideal of a path graph has linear quotients. To prove our result we construct a recursively defined order on the generators of the ideal which yields linear quotients. Our construction has a natural generalization to the larger class of chordal graphs. This generalization allows us to raise some questions that are related to some open problems about powers of cover ideals of chordal graphs.
In this paper, we introduce a new generalization of weakly prime ideals called $I$-prime. Suppose $R$ is a commutative ring with identity and $I$ a fixed ideal of $R$. A proper ideal $P$ of $R$ is $I$-prime if for $a, b \in R$ with $ab \in P-IP$ implies either $a \in P$ or $b \in P$. We give some characterizations of $I$-prime ideals and study some of its properties. Moreover, we give conditions under which $I$-prime ideals becomes prime or weakly prime and we construct the view of $I$-prime ideal in decomposite rings.
We establish a generalization of the Briancon-Skoda theorem about integral closures of ideals for graded systems of ideals satisfying a certain geometric condition.
In this paper, we introduce the concept of N-pure ideal as a generalization of pure ideal. Using this concept, a new and interesting type of rings is presented, we call it mid ring. Also, we provide new characterizations for von Neumann regular and zero-dimensional rings. Moreover, some results about mp-ring are given. Finally, a characterization for mid rings is provided. Then it is shown that the class of mid rings is strictly between the class of reduced mp-rings (p.f. rings) and the class of mp-rings.
We describe an algorithm for computing parameter-test-ideals in certain local Cohen-Macaulay rings. The algorithm is based on the study of a Frobenius map on the injective hull of the residue field of the ring and on the application of Rodney Sharp's notion of ``special ideals''. Our techniques also provide an algorithm for computing indices of nilpotency of Frobenius actions on top local cohomology modules of the ring and on the injective hull of its residue field. The study of nilpotent elements on injective hulls of residue fields also yields a great simplification of the proof of the fact …
Generalized Frobenius powers of an ideal were introduced in work of Hernández, Teixeira, and Witt as characteristic-dependent analogs of test ideals. However, little is known about the Frobenius powers and critical exponents of specific ideals, even in the monomial case. We describe an algorithm to compute the critical exponents of monomial ideals and use this algorithm to prove some results about their Frobenius powers and critical exponents. Rather than using test ideals, our algorithm uses techniques from linear optimization.
The generalized test ideals introduced in [HY] are related to multiplier ideals via reduction to characteristic p. In addition, they satisfy many of the subtle properties of the multiplier ideals, which in characteristic zero follow via vanishing theorems. In this note we give several examples to emphasize the different behavior of test ideals and multiplier ideals. Our main result is that every ideal in an F-finite regular local ring can be written as a generalized test ideal. We also prove the semicontinuity of $F$-pure thresholds (though the analogue of the Generic Restriction Theorem for m…
We provide a formula to compute the big Cohen-Macaulay test ideal for triples $((R,Δ),\mathfrak{a}^{t})$ where $R$ is a mixed characteristic toric ring and $\mathfrak{a}$ is a monomial ideal. Of particular interest is that this result is consistent with the formulas for test ideals in positive characteristic and multiplier ideals in characteristic zero.
We demonstrate that the topological Helly theorem and the algebraic Auslander-Buchsbaum may be viewed as different versions of the same phenomenon. Using this correspondence we show how the colorful Helly theorem of I.Barany and its generalizations by G.Kalai and R.Meshulam translates to the algebraic side. Our main results are algebraic generalizations of these translations, which in particular gives a syzygetic version of Hellys theorem.
We introduce the notion of strong test module and show that a large number of such modules appear in the tight closure theory of complete domains: the test ideal (this has already been known), the parameter test module, and the module of relative test elements. They also appear as certain multiplier ideals, a concept of interest in algebraic geometry.
Tight closure test ideals have been central to the classification of singularities in rings of characteristic $p>0$, and via reduction to characteristic $p$, in equal characteristic zero as well. A summary of their properties and applications can be found in "A survey of test ideals" by Karl Schwede and Kevin Tucker. In this paper, we extend the notion of a test ideal to arbitrary closure operations, particularly those coming from big Cohen-Macaulay modules and algebras, and prove that it shares key properties of tight closure test ideals. Our main results show how these test ideals can be use…
This article presents a generalization of the RSA cryptosystem for rings with commuting ideals. An analogue of the Euler function for ideals and the concept of an RSA-ideal are defined. An analog of a cryptosystem for the ring with commuting ideals is formulated and a description of the RSA-ideals for which this is possible is obtained.
We study higher jumping numbers and generalized test ideals associated to determinantal ideals over a field of positive characteristic. We work in positive characteristic and give a complete characterization of both families for ideals generated by maximal minors; and make a conjecture for the general case. Although these invariants are understood asymptotically - as their positive characteristic grows to infinity they essentially coincide with their characteristic zero analogues - there are known examples where the behavior in positive characteristic differs significantly from that of charact…
Given an ideal $a \subseteq R$ in a (log) $Q$-Gorenstein $F$-finite ring of characteristic $p > 0$, we study and provide a new perspective on the test ideal $τ(R, a^t)$ for a real number $t > 0$. Generalizing a number of known results from the principal case, we show how to effectively compute the test ideal and also describe $τ(R, a^t)$ using (regular) alterations with a formula analogous to that of multiplier ideals in characteristic zero. We further prove that the $F$-jumping numbers of $τ(R, a^t)$ as $t$ varies are rational and have no limit points, including the important case where $R$ i…
Hochster and Huneke proved in \cite{HH5} fine behaviors of symbolic powers of ideals in regular rings, using the theory of tight closure. In this paper, we use generalized test ideals, which are a characteristic $p$ analogue of multiplier ideals, to give a slight generalization of Hochster-Huneke's results.
We prove that the finitistic test ideal $τ_{\rm fg}(R, Δ, \mathfrak{a}^t)$ coincides with the big test ideal $τ_{\rm b}(R, Δ, \mathfrak{a}^t)$ if the pair $(R,Δ)$ is numerically log $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein.
As a generalization of formulas given by Demailly-Ein-Lazarsfeld, Eisenstein and Takagi, we prove a subadditivity formula for multiplier ideals associated to log pairs.
We consider the following conjecture: if X is a smooth projective variety over a field of characteristic zero, then there is a dense set of reductions X_s of X to positive characteristic such that the action of the Frobenius morphism on the top Zariski cohomology of the structure sheaf of X_s is bijective. We also consider a conjecture relating certain invariants of singularities in characteristic zero (the multiplier ideals) with invariants in positive characteristic (the test ideals). We prove that the former conjecture implies the latter one in the case of ambient nonsingular varieties.
This paper gives an explicit formula for the multiplier ideals, and consequently for the log canonical thresholds, of any GL(V)xGL(W)-invariant ideal in the symmetric algebra S of the tensor product of V with the dual of W, where V and W are vector spaces over a field of characteristic 0. This characterization is done in terms of a polytope constructed from the set of Young diagrams corresponding to the Schur modules generating the ideal. Our approach consists in computing the test ideals of some invariant ideals of S in positive characteristic: Namely, we will compute the test ideals (and so …
Test ideals were first introduced by Mel Hochster and Craig Huneke in their celebrated theory of tight closure, and since their invention have been closely tied to the theory of Frobenius splittings. Subsequently, test ideals have also found application far beyond their original scope to questions arising in complex analytic geometry. In this paper we give a contemporary survey of test ideals and their wide-ranging applications.
We consider the following conjecture: if X is a smooth projective variety over a field of characteristic zero, then there is a dense set of reductions X_s to positive characteristic such that the action of the Frobenius morphism on the top Zariski cohomology of the structure sheaf on X_s is bijective. We also consider the conjecture relating the multiplier ideals of an ideal J on a nonsingular variety in characteristic zero, and the test ideals of the reductions of J to positive characteristic. We prove that the latter conjecture implies the former one. The converse was proved in a joint paper…
