Andreu et al [2] and Sadovskii [11] used representation spaces to study measures of non-compactness and spectral radii of operators on Banach lattices. In this paper, we develop representation spaces based on the nonstandard hull construction (which is equivalent to the ultrapower construction). As a particular application, we present a simple proof and some extensions of the main result of de Pagter and Schep [6] on the monotonicity of the measure of non-compactness and the spectral radius of AM-compact operators. We also use the representation spaces to characterize d-convergence and discuss the relationship between d-convergence and the measures of non-compactness.
We investigate for a bounded semigroup of linear operators $S$ on a Banach space $E$ and a vector $x \in E$, when relative compactness of $S(I-T)x$ for every $T \in S$ implies relative compactness of the orbit $Sx$. In particular, we derive characterizations of separable Banach spaces not containing $\mathrm{c}_0$ and of reflexivity of Banach spaces with a Schauder basis in terms of such compactness results.
We give a new proof of a recent characterization by Diaz and Mayoral of compactness in the Lebesgue-Bochner spaces $L_X^p$, where $X$ is a Banach space and $1\le p<\infty$, and extend the result to vector-valued Banach function spaces $E_X$, where $E$ is a Banach function space with order continuous norm.
A boundary for a Banach space is a subset of the dual unit sphere with the property that each element of the Banach space attains its norm on an element of that subset. Trivially, the pointwise convergence with respect to such a boundary is coarser than the weak topology on the Banach space. Godefroy's Boundary Problem asks whether nevertheless both topologies have the same bounded compact sets. This paper contains the answer in the positive.
We consider the compactness of derivations from commutative Banach algebras into their dual modules. We show that if there are no compact derivations from a commutative Banach algebra, $A$, into its dual module, then there are no compact derivations from $A$ into any symmetric $A$-bimodule; we also prove analogous results for weakly compact derivations and for bounded derivations of finite rank. We then characterise the compact derivations from the convolution algebra $\ell^1(\Z_+)$ to its dual. Finally, we give an example (due to J. F. Feinstein) of a non-compact, bounded derivation from a un…
We give a positive answer to the question of K. Bouras [`Almost Dunford-Pettis sets in Banach lattices', \textit{Rend. Circ. Mat. Palermo (2)} \textbf{ 62} (2013), 227--236] concerning weak compactness of almost Dunford-Pettis sets in Banach lattices. That is, every almost Dunford-Pettis set in a Banach lattice $E$ is relatively weakly compact if, and only if, $E$ is a $KB$-space.
We introduce a measure of super weak noncompactness $Γ$ defined for bounded linear operators and subsets in Banach spaces that allows to state and prove a characterization of the Banach spaces which are subspaces of a Hilbert generated space. The use of super weak compactness and $Γ$ casts light on the structure of these Banach spaces and complements the work of Argyros, Fabian, Farmaki, Godefroy, Hájek, Montesinos,\linebreak Troyanski and Zizler on this subject. A particular kind of relatively super weakly compact sets, namely uniformly weakly null sets, plays an important role and exhibits c…
There are two main aims of the paper. The first one is to extend the criterion for the precompactness of sets in Banach function spaces to the setting of quasi-Banach function spaces. The second one is to extend the criterion for the precompactness of sets in the Lebesgue spaces $L_p(\mathbb R^n)$, $1 \leq p < \infty$, to the so-called power quasi-Banach function spaces. These criteria are applied to establish compact embeddings of abstract Besov spaces into quasi-Banach function spaces. The results are illustrated on embeddings of Besov spaces $B^s_{p,q}(\mathbb R^n)$, $0<s<1$, $0<p,q\leq \in…
The generalized Cesàro operators $\mathcal{C}_t$, for $t\in[0,1)$, introduced in the 1980's by Rhaly, are natural analogues of the classical Cesàro averaging operator $\mathcal{C}_1$ and act in various Banach sequence spaces $X\subseteq {\mathbb C}^{{\mathbb N}_0}$. In this paper we concentrate on a certain class of Banach lattices for the coordinate-wise order, which includes all separable, rearrangement invariant sequence spaces, various weighted $c_0$ and $\ell^p$ spaces and many others. In such Banach lattices $X$ the operators $\mathcal{C}_t$, for $t\in[0,1)$, are always compact (unlike $…
We list a number of problems in several topics related to compactness in nonseparable Banach spaces. Namely, about the Hilbertian ball in its weak topology, spaces of continuous functions on Eberlein compacta, WCG Banach spaces, Valdivia compacta and Radon-Nikodým compacta.
The question which led to the title of this note is the following: {\it If $X$ is a Banach space and $K$ is a compact subset of $X$, is it possible to find a compact, or even approximable, operator $v:X\to X$ such that $K\subset\ol{v(B_X)}$?} This question was first posed by P.G.Dixon [6] in connection with investigating the problem of the existence of approximate identities in certain operator algebras. We shall provide a couple of observations related to the above question and give in particular a negative answer in case of approximable operators. We shall also provide the first examples of …
We characterize boundedness and compactness of the classical Volterra operator $T_g \colon H_{v_α}^{\infty} \to H^{\infty}$ induced by a univalent function $g$ for standard weights $v_α$ with $0 \leq α< 1$, partly answering an open problem posed by A. Anderson, M. Jovovic and W. Smith. We also study boundedness, compactness and weak compactness of the generalized Volterra operator $T_g^φ$ mapping between Banach spaces of analytic functions on the unit disc satisfying certain general conditions.
We characterize boundedness, compactness and weak compactness of Volterra operators acting between different weighted Banach spaces of entire functions with weighted sup-norms in terms of the symbol g. Thus we complement recent work by Bassallote, Contreras, Hernández-Mancera, Martín and Paul for spaces of holomorphic functions on the disc and by Constantin and Peláez for reflexive weighted Fock spaces.
The main purpose of this paper is to treat semigroups properties, like norm continuity, compactness and differentiability for perturbed semigroups in Banach spaces. In particular, we investigate three large classes of perturbations, Miyadera-Voigt, Desch-Schappacher and Staffans-Weiss perturbations. Our approach is mainly based on feedback theory of Salamon-Weiss systems. Our results are applied to abstract boundary integro-differential equations in Banach spaces.
We prove that a closed convex subset of a Banach space is (super-)weakly compact if and only if it is (super)-ergodic. As a consequence we deduce that super weakly compact sets are characterized by the fixed point property for continuous affine mappings. We also prove that the M-(fixed point property for affine isometries) implies the Banach-Saks property.
In this paper, we study a class of Banach spaces, called ϕ-spaces. In a natural way, we associate a measure of weak compactness in such spaces and prove an analogue of Sadovskii fixed point theorem for weakly sequentially continuous maps. A counter-example is given to justify our requirement. As an application, we establish an existence result for a Hammerstein integral equation in a Banach space.
The purpose of this paper is devoted to studying representation of measures of non generalized compactness, in particular, measures of noncompactness, of non-weak compactness, and of non-super weak compactness, etc, defined on Banach spaces and its applications. With the aid of a three-time order preserving embedding theorem, we show that for every Banach space $X$, there exist a Banach function space $C(K)$ for some compact Hausdorff space $K$, and an order-preserving affine mapping $\mathbb T$ from the super space $\mathscr B$ of all nonempty bounded subsets of $X$ endowed with the Hausdorff…
We present some extensions of classical results that involve elements of the dual of Banach spaces, such as Bishop-Phelp's theorem and James' compactness theorem, but restricting to sets of functionals determined by geometrical properties. The main result, which answers a question posed by F. Delbaen, is the following: Let $E$ be a Banach space such that $(B_{E^\ast}, ω^\ast)$ is convex block compact. Let $A$ and $B$ be bounded, closed and convex sets with distance $d(A,B) > 0$. If every $x^\ast \in E^\ast$ with \[ \sup(x^\ast,B) < \inf(x^\ast,A) \] attains its infimum on $A$ and its supremum …
We study the property of being strongly weakly compactly generated (and some relatives) in projective tensor products of Banach spaces. Our main result is as follows. Let $1<p,q<\infty$ be such that $1/p+1/q\geq 1$. Let $X$ (resp., $Y$) be a Banach space with a countable unconditional finite-dimensional Schauder decomposition having a disjoint lower $p$-estimate (resp., $q$-estimate). If $X$ and $Y$ are strongly weakly compactly generated, then so is its projective tensor product $X \widehat{\otimes}_πY$.
We study the general measures of non-compactness defined on subsets of a dual Banach space, their associated derivations and their $ω$-iterates. We introduce the notions of convexifiable and sublinear measure of non-compactness and investigate the properties of its associated fragment and slice derivations. We apply our results to the Kuratowski measure of non-compactness and to the study of the Szlenk index of a Banach space. As a consequence, we obtain that the Szlenk index and the convex Szlenk index of a separable Banach space are always equal. We also give, for any countable ordinal $α$, …
For $0\leqslant ξ\leqslant ω_1$, we define the notion of $ξ$-weakly precompact and $ξ$-weakly compact sets in Banach spaces and prove that a set is $ξ$-weakly precompact if and only if its weak closure is $ξ$-weakly compact. We prove a quantified version of Grothendieck's compactness principle and the characterization of Schur spaces obtained by Dowling et al. For $0\leqslant ξ\leqslant ω_1$, we prove that a Banach space $X$ has the $ξ$-Schur property if and only if every $ξ$-weakly compact set is contained in the closed, convex hull of a weakly null (equivalently, norm null) sequence.
The paper is devoted to the relationship between almost limited operators and weakly compacts operators. We show that if $F$ is a $σ$-Dedekind complete Banach lattice then, every almost limited operator $T:E\rightarrow F $ is weakly compact if and only if $E$ is reflexive or the norm of $F$ is order continuous. Also, we show that if $E$ is a $σ$-Dedekind complete Banach lattice then the square of every positive almost limited operator $ T:E\rightarrow E$ is weakly compact if and only if the norm of $E$ is order continuous.
We introduce an ordinal index which characterizes weak compactness of operators between Banach spaces. We study when classes consisting of operators having bounded index form a closed ideal, the distinctness of the classes, and the descriptive set theoretic properties of this index.
We introduce notions of compactness and weak compactness for multilinear maps from a product of normed spaces to a normed space, and prove some general results about these notions. We then consider linear maps $T:A\to B$ between Banach algebras that are "close to multiplicative" in the following senses: the failure of multiplicativity, defined by $S_T(a,b)=T(a)T(b)-T(ab)$, is compact [respectively weakly compact]. We call such maps cf-homomorphisms [respectively wcf-homomorphisms]. We also introduce a number of other, related definitions. We state and prove some general theorems about these ma…
We develop a functional framework suitable for the treatment of partial differential equations and variational problems on evolving families of Banach spaces. We propose a definition for the weak time derivative that does not rely on the availability of a Hilbertian structure and explore conditions under which spaces of weakly differentiable functions (with values in an evolving Banach space) relate to classical Sobolev--Bochner spaces. An Aubin--Lions compactness result is proved. We analyse concrete examples of function spaces over time-evolving spatial domains and hypersurfaces for which we…
We characterize the relatively compact subsets of $L^1\left(\| m \| \right),$ the quasi-Banach function space associated to the semivariation of a given vector measure $m$ showing that the strong connection between compactness, uniform absolute continuity, uniform integrability, almost order boundedness and L-weak compactness that appears in the classic setting of Lebesgue spaces remains almost invariant in this new context of the Choquet integration. Also we present a de la Vallée-Poussin type theorem in the context of these spaces $L^1\left(\|m\|\right)$ that allows us to locate each compact…
The concept of a profile decomposition formalizes concentration compactness arguments on the functional-analytic level, providing a powerful refinement of the Banach-Alaoglu weak-star compactness theorem. We prove existence of profile decompositions for general bounded sequences in uniformly convex Banach spaces equipped with a group of bijective isometries, thus generalizing analogous results previously obtained for Sobolev spaces and for Hilbert spaces. Profile decompositions in uniformly convex Banach spaces are based on the notion of $Δ$-convergence by T. C. Lim instead of weak convergence…
Our main result is the following: {\it Let $E$ be a Banach space and $D$ be a weakly compact subset of $E$ with $0\notin D$. If $A$ is a bounded subset of $E$ such that every $x^*\in E^*$ with $x^*(D) >0$ attains its supremum on $A$, then $A$ is weakly relatively compact.}
We present a compensated compactness theorem in Banach spaces established recently, whose formulation is originally motivated by the weak rigidity problem for isometric immersions of manifolds with lower regularity. As a corollary, a geometrically intrinsic div-curl lemma for tensor fields on Riemannian manifolds is obtained. Then we show how this intrinsic div-curl lemma can be employed to establish the global weak rigidity of the Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations, the Cartan formalism, and the corresponding isometric immersions of Riemannian submanifolds.
We deduce continuity, compactness and invariance properties for quasi-Banach Orlicz modulation spaces. We characterize such spaces in terms of Gabor expansions and by their images under the Bargmann transform.
This is a survey on disjointly homogeneous Banach lattices and their applicactions. Several structural properties of this class are analyzed. In addition we show how these spaces provide a natural framework for studying the compactness of powers of operators allowing for a unified treatment of well-known results.
We collect several open questions in Banach spaces, mostly related to measure theoretic aspects of the theory. The problems are divided into five categories: miscellaneous problems in Banach spaces (non-separable $L^p$ spaces, compactness in Banach spaces, $w^*$-null sequences in dual spaces), measurability in Banach spaces (Baire and Borel $σ$-algebras, measurable selectors), vector integration (Riemann, Pettis and McShane integrals), vector measures (range and associated $L^1$ spaces) and Lebesgue-Bochner spaces (topological and structural properties, scalar convergence).
The classical criterion for compactness in Banach spaces of functions can be reformulated into a simple tightness condition in the time-frequency domain. This description preserves more explicitly the symmetry between time and frequency than the classical conditions. The result is first stated and proved for L^2(R^d), and then generalized to coorbit spaces. As special cases, we obtain new characterizations of compactness in Besov-Triebel-Lizorkin spaces, modulation spaces and Bargmann-Fock spaces.
We introduce two measures of weak non-compactness $Ja_E$ and $Ja$ that quantify, via distances, the idea of boundary behind James' compactness theorem. These measures tell us, for a bounded subset $C$ of a Banach space $E$ and for given $x^*\in E^*$, how far from $E$ or $C$ one needs to go to find $x^{**}\in \bar{C}^{w^*}\subset E^{**}$ with $x^{**}(x^*)=\sup x^* (C)$. A quantitative version of James' compactness theorem is proved using $Ja_E$ and $Ja$, and in particular it yields the following result: {\it Let $C$ be a closed convex bounded subset of a Banach space $E$ and $r>0$. If there is …
Defect of compactness for non-compact imbeddings of Banach spaces can be expressed in the form of a profile decomposition. This paper extends the profile decomposition for Sobolev spaces proved by Solimini (AIHP 1995) to the non-reflexive case p=1. Since existence of concentration profiles relies on weak-star compactness, the corresponding result is set in a larger, conjugate, space of functions of bounded variation. We prove existence of minimizers for related inequalities and generalizations for to spaces of bounded variation on Lie groups.
The objective of this manuscript is to enquire for the solvability of a specific type of non-linear quadratic integral equations via the interesting notion of measure of non-compactness. Firstly, we inquire into couple of exciting fixed point theorems involving a measure of non-compactness in the setting of a Banach space. Subsequently, bringing into play a suitable measure of non-compactness and the acquired results, we discuss the existence of solution to the aforementioned kind of non-linear quadratic integral equations.
Let (Ω,μ) be a finite measure space, X a Banach space, and let 1\le p<\infty. The aim of this paper is to give an elementary proof of the Diaz--Mayoral theorem that a subset V of L^p(μ;X) is relatively compact if and only if it is uniformly p-integrable, uniformly tight, and scalarly relatively compact.
Let X and Y be Banach spaces and F a subset of B_{Y^*}. Endow Y with the topology τ_F of pointwise convergence on F. Let T: X^* \to Y be a bounded linear operator which is (w^*, τ_F) continuous. Assume that every vector in the range of T attains its norm at an element of F. Then it is proved that T is (w^*,w) continuous.
The behavior of bilinear operators acting on interpolation of Banach spaces for the $ρ$ method in relation to the compactness is analyzed. Similar results of Lions-Peetre, Hayakawa and Person's compactness theorems are obtained for the bilinear case and the $ρ$ method.
We refine Amitsur's theory of radicals in complete lattices and apply the obtained results to the theory of radicals in the lattices of subspaces of Banach spaces and in the lattices of ideals of Banach and C*-algebras and of Banach Lie algebras.
Several recent papers investigated lattice copies and unbounded convergences in Banach lattices. In this paper, we first solve the problem of RV and LA which is an extension of the well-known James distortion theorem. Using lattice copies and unbounded convergence, then we introduce weak L- and M-weakly compact operators on Banach lattices and research the relationship between these operators and L- and M-weakly compact operators. Finally, we study the compactness of weak L-weakly compact and weak M-weakly compact operators.
We introduce and study two notions of entropy in a Banach space X with a normalized Schauder basis . The geometric entropy E(A) of a subset A of X is defined to be the infimum of radii of compact bricks containing A. We obtain several compactness characterizations for bricks (Theorem 3.7) useful for main results. We also obtain sufficient conditions on a set in a Hilbert space to have finite unconditional entropy. For Banach spaces without a Schauder basis we offer another entropy, called the Auerbach entropy. Finally, we pose some open problems.
Motivated by the Lipschitz-lifting property of Banach spaces introduced by Godefroy and Kalton, we consider the lattice-lifting property, which is an analogous notion within the category of Banach lattices and lattice homomorphisms. Namely, a Banach lattice $X$ satisfies the lattice-lifting property if every lattice homomorphism to $X$ having a bounded linear right-inverse must have a lattice homomorphism right-inverse. In terms of free Banach lattices, this can be rephrased into the following question: which Banach lattices embed into the free Banach lattice which they generate as a lattice-c…
The free Banach lattice over a Banach space is introduced and analyzed. This generalizes the concept of free Banach lattice over a set of generators, and allows us to study the Nakano property and the density character of non-degenerate intervals on these spaces, answering some recent questions of B. de Pagter and A.W. Wickstead. Moreover, an example of a Banach lattice which is weakly compactly generated as a lattice but not as a Banach space is exhibited, thus answering a question of J. Diestel.
We prove that if $ω_1$ and $ω_2$ are moderate weights and $\mascB$ is a suitable (quasi-)Banach function space, then a necessary and sufficient condition for the embedding $i\, :\, M (ω_1,\mascB )\to M (ω_2,\mascB )$ between two modulation spaces to be compact is that the quotient $ω_2/ω_1$ vanishes at infinity. Moreover we show, that the boundedness of $ω_2/ω_1$ a necessary and sufficient condition for the previous embedding to be continuous.
We prove an abstract theorem on keeping the compactness property of a linear operator after interpolation in Banach spaces. No analytical presentation of operators, spaces and interpolation functor is required. We use only some little-known properties of compact sets and various facts about bases and basic sequences (with detailed references to the monograph "Bases in Banach spaces", Vol. I-II by I.M. Singer). Therefore the results are applicable to arbitrary spaces and any interpolation functor, including the complex method. The "two-sided" compactness is also mentioned at the end of this pap…
