Motivated by the Lipschitz-lifting property of Banach spaces introduced by Godefroy and Kalton, we consider the lattice-lifting property, which is an analogous notion within the category of Banach lattices and lattice homomorphisms. Namely, a Banach lattice $X$ satisfies the lattice-lifting property if every lattice homomorphism to $X$ having a bounded linear right-inverse must have a lattice homomorphism right-inverse. In terms of free Banach lattices, this can be rephrased into the following question: which Banach lattices embed into the free Banach lattice which they generate as a lattice-complemented sublattice? We will provide necessary conditions for a Banach lattice to have the lattice-lifting property, and show that this property is shared by Banach spaces with a $1$-unconditional basis as well as free Banach lattices. The case of $C(K)$ spaces will also be analyzed.
This paper surveys some of the late Nigel Kalton's contributions to Banach space theory. The paper is written for the Nigel Kalton Memorial Website http://mathematics.missouri.edu/kalton/, which is scheduled to go online in summer 2011.
This is a survey of some of the results which were obtained in the last twelve years on the non-linear geometry of Banach spaces. We focus on the contribution of the late Nigel Kalton.
We consider several quantities related to weak sequential completeness of a Banach space and prove some of their properties in general and in $L$-embedded Banach spaces, improving in particular an inequality of G. Godefroy, N. Kalton and D. Li. We show some examples witnessing natural limits of our positive results, in particular, we construct a separable Banach space $X$ with the Schur property that cannot be renormed to have a certain quantitative form of weak sequential completeness, thus providing a partial answer to a question of G. Godefroy.
In this note we extend some recent results in the space of regular operators. In particular, we provide the following Banach lattice version of a classical result of Kalton: Let $E$ be an atomic Banach lattice with an order continuous norm and $F$ a Banach lattice. Then the following are equivalent: (i) $L^r(E,F)$ contains no copy of $\ell_\infty$, \,\, (ii) $L^r(E,F)$ contains no copy of $c_0$, \,\, (iii) $K^r(E,F)$ contains no copy of $c_0$, \,\, (iv) $K^r(E,F)$ is a (projection) band in $L^r(E,F)$, \,\, (v) $K^r(E,F)=L^r(E,F)$.
This is the third of a series of papers surveying some small part of the remarkable work of our friend and colleague Nigel Kalton. We have written it as part of a tribute to his memory. It does not contain new results. This time, rather than concentrating on one particular paper, we attempt to give a general overview of Nigel's many contributions to the theory of interpolation of Banach spaces, and also, significantly, quasi-Banach spaces.
If a separable Banach space contains an isometric copy of every separable reflexive Fréchet smooth Banach space, then it contains an isometric copy of every separable Banach space. The same conclusion holds if we consider separable Banach spaces with Fréchet smooth dual space. This improves a result of G. Godefroy and N. J. Kalton.
We present many examples of Banach spaces of linear operators and homogeneous polynomials without the approximation property, thus improving results of Dineen and Mujica [11] and Godefroy and Saphar [13].
We study the nonlinear embeddability of Banach spaces and the equi-embeddability of the family of Kalton's interlaced graphs $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ into dual spaces. Notably, we define and study a modification of Kalton's property $\mathcal Q$ that we call property $\mathcal{Q}_p$ (with $p \in (1,+\infty]$). We show that if $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ equi-coarse Lipschitzly embeds into $X^*$, then the Szlenk index of $X$ is greater than $ω$, and that this is optimal, i.e., there exists a separable dual space $Y^*$ that contains $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ equi-Lipschitz…
In 1989, G. Godefroy proved that a Banach space contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$ if and only if it can be equivalently renormed to be octahedral. It is known that octahedral norms can be characterized by means of covering the unit sphere by a finite number of balls. This observation allows us to connect the theory of octahedral norms with ball-covering properties of Banach spaces introduced by L. Cheng in 2006. Following this idea, we extend G. Godefroy's result to higher cardinalities. We prove that, for an infinite cardinal $κ$, a Banach space $X$ contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_…
In this note the following is proved. Separable L-embedded spaces - that is separable Banach spaces which are complemented in their biduals such that the norm between the two complementary subspaces is additive - have property (X) which, by a result of Godefroy and Talagrand, entails uniqueness of the space as a predual.
The paper alluded to in the title contains the following striking result: Let $I$ be the unit interval and $Δ$ the Cantor set. If $X$ is a quasi Banach space containing no copy of $c_0$ which is isomorphic to a closed subspace of a space with a basis and $C(I, X)$ is linearly homeomorphic to $C(Δ, X)$, then $X$ is locally convex, i.e., a Banach space. It is shown that Kalton result is sharp by exhibiting non locally convex quasi Banach spaces X with a basis for which $C(I, X)$ and $C(Δ, X)$ are isomorphic. Our examples are rather specific and actually in all cases X is isomorphic to $C(Δ, X)$ …
We show that the main problem left open in Wenzel: "Real and complex operator ideals" (wenzelopidls.latex), can be solved using the Banach spaces $Z_α$ recently constructed by Kalton: "An elementary example of a Banach space not isomorphic to its complex conjugate" (kaltoncmplxbsp.tex). This gives an example of a complex operator ideal that has no real analogue. It thus shows the richer structure of complex operator ideals compared with the real ones.
In the present paper we prove that a necessary condition for a Banach space $X$ to admit a generating compact Lipschitz retract $K$, which satisfies an additional mild assumption on its shape, is that $X$ enjoys the Bounded Approximation Property. This is a partial solution to a question raised by Godefroy and Ozawa.
We study operators on the Kalton-Peck Banach space $Z_2$ from various points of view: matrix representations, examples, spectral properties and operator ideals. For example, we prove that there are non-compact, strictly singular operators acting on $Z_2$, but the product of two of them is a compact operator. Among applications, we show that every copy of $Z_2$ in $Z_2$ is complemented, and each semi-Fredholm operator on $Z_2$ has complemented kernel and range, the space $Z_2$ is $Z_2$-automorphic and we give a partial solution to a problem of Johnson, Lindenstrauss and Schetchman about strictl…
We prove that if $X$ is a quasi-normed space which possesses an infinite countable dimensional subspace with a separating dual, then it admits a strictly weaker Hausdorff vector topology. Such a topology is constructed explicitly. As an immediate consequence, we obtain an improvement of a well-known result of Kalton-Shapiro and Drewnowski by showing that a quasi-Banach space contains a basic sequence if and only if it contains an infinite countable dimensional subspace whose dual is separating. We also use this result to highlight a new feature of the minimal quasi-Banach space constructed by …
A boundary for a Banach space is a subset of the dual unit sphere with the property that each element of the Banach space attains its norm on an element of that subset. Trivially, the pointwise convergence with respect to such a boundary is coarser than the weak topology on the Banach space. Godefroy's Boundary Problem asks whether nevertheless both topologies have the same bounded compact sets. This paper contains the answer in the positive.
In this this paper, we introduce new classes of operators in complex Banach spaces, which we call k-bitransitive operators and compound operators to study the direct sum of diskcyclic operators. We create a set of sufficient conditions for k-bitransitivity and compound. We show the relation between topologically mixing operators and compound operators. Also, we extend the Godefroy-Shapiro Criterion for topologically mixing operators to compound operators.
The paper studies short exact sequences of Banach modules over the convolution algebra $L_1=L_1(G)$, where $G$ is a compact abelian group. The main tool is the notion of a nonlinear $L_1$-centralizer, which in combination with the Fourier transform, is used to produce sequences of $L_1$-modules $0\rightarrow L_q \rightarrow Z \rightarrow L_p \rightarrow 0$ that are nontrivial as long as the general theory allows it, namely for $p\in (1,\infty], q\in[1,\infty)$. Concrete examples are worked in detail for the circle group, with applications to the Hardy classes, and the Cantor group.
A result of G. Godefroy asserts that a Banach space $X$ contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$ if and only if there is an equivalent norm $|||\cdot|||$ such that, for every finite-dimensional subspace $Y$ of $X$ and every $\varepsilon>0$, there exists $x\in S_X$ so that $|||y+r x|||\geq (1-\varepsilon)(|||y|||+\vert r\vert)$ for every $y\in Y$ and every $r\in\mathbb R$. In this paper we generalize this result to larger cardinals, showing that if $κ$ is an uncountable cardinal then a Banach space $X$ contains a copy of $\ell_1(κ)$ if and only if there is an equivalent norm $|||\cdot|||$ on $X$…
For $1<p\le \infty$, we show the existence of a Banach space which is both injectively and surjectively universal for the class of all separable Banach spaces with an equivalent $p$-asymptotically uniformly smooth norm. We prove that this class is analytic complete in the class of separable Banach spaces. These results extend previous works by Kalton, Werner and Kurka in the case $p=\infty$.
We study the structure of the space of coarse Lipschitz maps between Banach spaces. In particular we introduce the notion of norm attaining coarse Lipschitz maps. We extend to the case of norm attaining coarse Lipschitz equivalences, a result of G. Godefroy on Lipschitz equivalences. This leads us to include the non separable versions of classical results on the stability of the existence of asymptotically uniformly smooth norms under Lipschitz or coarse Lipschitz equivalences.
We present and thoroughly study natural Polish spaces of separable Banach spaces. These spaces are defined as spaces of norms, resp. pseudonorms, on the countable infinite-dimensional rational vector space. We provide an exhaustive comparison of these spaces with admissible topologies recently introduced by Godefroy and Saint-Raymond and show that Borel complexities differ little with respect to these two different topological approaches. We investigate generic properties in these spaces and compare them with those in admissible topologies, confirming the suspicion of Godefroy and Saint-Raymon…
In this note, we extend to the setting of quasi-reflexive spaces a classical result of N. Kalton and L. Randrianarivony on the coarse Lipschitz structure of reflexive and asymptotically uniformly smooth Banach spaces. As an application, we show for instance, that for $1\le q<p$, a $q$-asymptotically uniformly convex Banach space does not coarse Lipschitz embed into a $p$-asymptotically uniformly smooth quasi-reflexive Banach space. This extends a recent result of B.M. Braga.
We introduce a measure of super weak noncompactness $Γ$ defined for bounded linear operators and subsets in Banach spaces that allows to state and prove a characterization of the Banach spaces which are subspaces of a Hilbert generated space. The use of super weak compactness and $Γ$ casts light on the structure of these Banach spaces and complements the work of Argyros, Fabian, Farmaki, Godefroy, Hájek, Montesinos,\linebreak Troyanski and Zizler on this subject. A particular kind of relatively super weakly compact sets, namely uniformly weakly null sets, plays an important role and exhibits c…
This note corrects a gap and improves results in an earlier paper by the first named author. More precisely, it is shown that on weakly compactly generated Banach spaces X which admit a C^{p} smooth norm, one can uniformly approximate uniformly continuous functions f:X->R by Lipschitz, C^{p} smooth functions. Moreover, there is a constant C>1 so that any L-Lipschitz function f:X->R can be uniformly approximated by CL-Lipschitz, C^{p} smooth functions. This provides a `Lipschitz version' of the classical approximation results of Godefroy, Troyanski, Whitfield and Zizler.
We extend and generalize the result of Kalton and Swanson ($Z_2$ is a symplectic Banach space with no Lagrangian subspace) by showing that all higher order Rochgberg spaces $\mathfrak R^{(n)}$ are symplectic Banach spaces with no Lagrangian subspaces. The nontrivial symplectic structure on even spaces is the one induced by the natural duality; while the nontrivial symplectic structure on odd spaces requires perturbation with a complex structure. We will also study symplectic structures on general Banach spaces and, motivated by the unexpected appearance of complex structures, we introduce and …
We establish a linear variational principle extending the Deville-Godefroy-Zizler's one. We use this variational principle to prove that if $X$ is a Banach space having property $(α)$ of Schachermayer and $Y$ is any banach space, then the set of all norm strongly attaining linear operators from $X$ into $Y$ is a complement of a $σ$-porous set. Moreover, the results of the paper applies also to an abstract class of (linear and nonlinear) operator spaces.
We construct a continuum of mutually non-isomorphic separable Banach spaces which are complemented in each other. Consequently, the Schroeder-Bernstein Index of any of these spaces is $2^{\aleph_0}$. Our construction is based on a Banach space introduced by W. T. Gowers and B. Maurey in 1997. We also use classical descriptive set theory methods, as in some work of V. Ferenczi and C. Rosendal, to improve some results of P. G. Casazza and of N. J. Kalton on the Schroeder-Bernstein Property for spaces with an unconditional finite-dimensional Schauder decomposition.
If $E$ is a Banach space, any element $x^{**}$ in its bidual $E^{**}$ is an affine function on the dual unit ball $B_{E^*}$ that might possess variety of descriptive properties with respect to the weak* topology. We prove several results showing that descriptive properties of $x^{**}$ are quite often determined by the behaviour of $x^{**}$ on the set of extreme points of $B_{E^*}$, generalizing thus results of J. Saint Raymond and F. Jellett. We also prove several results on relation between Baire classes and intrinsic Baire classes of $L_1$-preduals which were introduced by S.A. Argyros, G. G…
We prove a very general theorem concerning the estimation of the expression $\|T(\frac{a+b}{2}) - \frac{Ta+Tb}{2}\|$ for different kinds of maps $T$ satisfying some general perurbated isometry condition. It can be seen as a quantitative generalization of the classical Mazur-Ulam theorem. The estimates improve the existing ones for bi-Lipschitz maps. As a consequence we also obtain a very simple proof of the result of Gevirtz which answers the Hyers-Ulam problem and we prove a non-linear generalization of the Banach-Stone theorem which improves the results of Jarosz and more recent results of D…
We prove that every separable Banach space containing $\ell_1$ can be equivalently renormed so that its bidual space is octahedral, which answers, in the separable case, a question by Godefroy in 1989. As a direct consequence, we obtain that every dual Banach space, with a separable predual, failing to be strongly regular (that is, without convex combinations of slices with diameter arbitrarily small for some closed, convex and bounded subset) can be equivalently renormed with a dual norm to satisfy the strong diameter two property (that is, such that every convex combination of slices in its …
We give a new more explicit proof of a result by Kalton & Lancien stating that on each Banach space with an unconditional basis not isomorphic to a Hilbert space there exists a generator of a holomorphic semigroup which does not have maximal regularity. In particular, we show that there always exists a Schauder basis (f_m) such that the generator is a Schauder multiplier associated to the sequence (2^m). Moreover, we show that maximal regularity does not extrapolate: we construct consistent holomorphic semigroups (T_p(t)) on L^p for p in (1, \infty) which have maximal regularity if and only if…
A theorem of Godefroy and Shapiro states that non-trivial convolution operators on the space of entire functions on $\mathbb{C}^n$ are hypercyclic. Moreover, it was shown by Bonilla and Grosse-Erdmann that they have frequently hypercyclic functions of exponential growth. On the other hand, in the infinite dimensional setting, the Godefroy-Shapiro theorem has been extended to several spaces of entire functions defined on Banach spaces. We prove that on all these spaces, non-trivial convolution operators are strongly mixing with respect to a gaussian probability measure of full support. For the …
Let $X$ be a real Banach space. A subset $B$ of the dual unit sphere of $X$ is said to be a boundary for $X$, if every element of $X$ attains its norm on some functional in $B$. The well-known Boundary Problem originally posed by Godefroy asks whether a bounded subset of $X$ which is compact in the topology of pointwise convergence on $B$ is already weakly compact. This problem was recently solved by H.Pfitzner in the positive. In this note we collect some stronger versions of the solution to the Boundary Problem, most of which are restricted to special types of Banach spaces. We shall use the…
This paper contains a study of the separable form $J_s(\cdot)$ of the classical Jung constant. We first establish, following Davis \cite{davis}, that a Banach space $X$ is $1$-separably injective if and only if $J_s(X)=1$. This characterization is then used for the understanding of new $1$-separably injective spaces. The last section establishes the inequality $\frac{1}{2}K(Y)J_s(X)\leq e(Y,X)$ connecting the separable Jung constant, Kottman's constant and the extension constant for Lipschitz maps, which is then used to obtain a simple proof of the equality $K(X,c_0)=e(X,c_0)$ of Kalton and a …
We prove that the sequence spaces $\ell_p\oplus\ell_q$ and the spaces of infinite matrices $\ell_p(\ell_q)$, $\ell_q(\ell_p)$ and $(\bigoplus_{n=1}^\infty \ell_p^n)_{\ell_q}$, which are isomorphic to certain Besov spaces, have an almost greedy basis whenever $0<p<1<q<\infty$. More precisely, we custom-build almost greedy bases in such a way that the Lebesgue parameters grow in a prescribed manner. Our arguments critically depend on the extension of the Dilworth-Kalton-Kutzarova method from [S. J. Dilworth, N. J. Kalton, and D. Kutzarova, On the existence of almost greedy bases in Banach spaces…
G. Godefroy asked whether, on any Banach space, the set of norm-attaining functionals contains a 2-dimensional linear subspace. We prove that a recent construction due to C.J. Read provides an example of a space which does not have this property. This is done through a study of the relation between the following two sentences where X is a Banach space and Y is a closed subspace of finite codimension in X: (A) Y is proximinal in X. (B) The annihilator of Y consists of norm-attaining functionals. We prove that these are equivalent if X is the Read's space. Moreover, we prove that any non-reflexi…
We show that for every $1<n<\infty$, there exits a Banach space $X_n$ containing proximinal subspaces of codimension $n$ but no proximinal finite codimensional subspaces of higher codimension. Moreover, the set of norm-attaining functionals of $X_n$ contains $n$-dimensional subspaces, but no subspace of higher dimension. This gives a $n$-by-$n$ version of the solutions given by Read and Rmoutil to problems of Singer and Godefroy. We also study the existence of strongly proximinal subspaces of finite codimension, showing that for every $1<n<\infty$ and $1\leqslant k <n$, there is a Banach space…
We prove that if the squares of two unconditional bases are equivalent up to a permutation, then the bases themselves are permutatively equivalent. This settles a twenty year-old question raised by Casazza and Kalton in [Uniqueness of unconditional bases in Banach spaces, Israel J. Math. 103 (1998), 141--175]. Solving this problem provides a new paradigm to study the uniqueness of unconditional basis in the general framework of quasi-Banach spaces. Multiple examples are given to illustrate how to put in practice this theoretical scheme. Among the main applications of this principle we obtain t…
In this paper we prove that if $X $ is a Banach space, then for every lower semi-continuous bounded below function $f, $ there exists a $\left(φ_1, φ_2\right)-$convex function $g, $ with arbitrarily small norm, such that $f + g $ attains its strong minimum on $X. $ This result extends some of the well-known varitional principles as that of Ekeland [18], that of Borwein-Preiss [6] and that of Deville-Godefroy-Zizler [14, 15].
We show that there is an operator space notion of Lipschitz embeddability between operator spaces which is strictly weaker than its linear counterpart but which is still strong enough to impose linear restrictions on operator space structures. This shows that there is a nontrivial theory of nonlinear geometry for operator spaces and it answers a question in [BCD21]. For that, we introduce the operator space version of Lipschitz-free Banach spaces and prove several properties of it. In particular, we show that separable operator spaces satisfy a sort of isometric Lipschitz-lifting property in t…
We construct an Asplund Banach space $\mathcal{X}$ with a norming Markuševič basis such that $\mathcal{X}$ is not weakly compactly generated. This solves a long-standing open problem from the early nineties, originally due to Gilles Godefroy. En route to the proof, we construct a peculiar example of scattered compact space, that also solves a question due to Wiesław Kubiś and Arkady Leiderman.
In this note we prove that the Kalton interlaced graphs do not equi-coarsely embed into the James space $\mathcal J$ nor into its dual $\mathcal J^*$. It is a particular case of a more general result on the non equi-coarse embeddability of the Kalton graphs into quasi-reflexive spaces with a special asymptotic stucture. This allows us to exhibit a coarse invariant for Banach spaces, namely the non equi-coarse embeddability of this family of graphs, which is very close to but different from the celebrated property $\mathcal Q$ of Kalton. We conclude with a remark on the coarse geometry of the J…
We prove a version of the Ando-Choi-Effros lifting theorem respecting subspaces, which in turn relies on Oja's principle of local reflexivity respecting subspaces. To achieve this, we first develop a theory of pairs of $M$-ideals. As a first consequence we get a version respecting subspaces of the Michael-Pełczyński extension theorem. Other applications are related to linear and Lipschitz bounded approximation properties for a pair consisting of a Banach space and a subspace. We show that in the separable case, the BAP for such a pair is equivalent to the simultaneous splitting of an associate…
A Banach space has the ball huskable property ($BHP$) if the closed unit ball has weakly open sets of arbitrarily small diameter. We can analogously define $w^*$-$BHP$ in the dual space. In this short note, we study these properties in the context of ideals in Banach spaces. The notion of an ideal, was introduced by Godefroy, Kalton and Saphar. We show that if a Banach space $X$ has $BHP,$ then any $M$-ideal of $X$ also has $BHP.$ We further show that if $Y$ is an $M$-ideal of $X,$ then $Y^*$ has $w^*$-$BHP$ implies $X^*$ has $w^{*}$-$BHP.$ We use this result to prove that for a compact Hausdo…
A construction analogous to that of Godefroy-Kalton for metric spaces allows to embed isometrically, in a canonical way, every quasi-metric space $(X,d)$ to an asymmetric normed space $\mathcal{F}_a(X,d)$ (its quasi-metric free space, also called asymmetric free space or semi-Lipschitz free space). The quasi-metric free space satisfies a universal property (linearization of semi-Lipschitz functions). The (conic) dual of $\mathcal{F}_a(X,d)$ coincides with the nonlinear asymmetric dual of $(X,d)$, that is, the space $\mathrm{SLip}_0(X,d)$ of semi-Lipschitz functions on $(X,d)$, vanishing at a b…
We prove that for certain subsets $M \subseteq \mathbb{R}^N$, $N \geqslant 1$, the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal{F}(M)$ has the metric approximation property (MAP), with respect to any norm on $\mathbb{R}^N$. In particular, $\mathcal{F}(M)$ has the MAP whenever $M$ is a finite-dimensional compact convex set. This should be compared with a recent result of Godefroy and Ozawa, who showed that there exists a compact convex subset $M$ of a separable Banach space, for which $\mathcal{F}(M)$ fails the approximation property.
