We show that the main problem left open in Wenzel: "Real and complex operator ideals" (wenzelopidls.latex), can be solved using the Banach spaces $Z_α$ recently constructed by Kalton: "An elementary example of a Banach space not isomorphic to its complex conjugate" (kaltoncmplxbsp.tex). This gives an example of a complex operator ideal that has no real analogue. It thus shows the richer structure of complex operator ideals compared with the real ones.
We establish a relation between Lipschitz operator ideals and linear operator ideals, which fits in the framework of Galois connection between lattices. We use this relationship to give a criterion which allow us to recognize when a Banach Lipschitz operator ideal is of composition type or not. Also, we introduce the concept of minimal Banach Lipschitz operator ideal, which have analogous properties to minimal Banach operator ideals. Also we characterize minimal Banach Lipschitz operator ideals which are of composition type and present examples which are not of this class.
In the nonlinear field of multilinear operators and homogeneous polynomials between Banach spaces, we develop a technique, based on the transformation of vector-valued sequences, to create new examples of hyper-ideals of multilinear operators, polynomial hyper-ideals and polynomial two-sided ideals. Several well studied ideals are shown to be actually hyper-ideals or two-sided ideals.
We show that for each Banach ideal of homogeneous polynomials, there exists a (necessarily unique) Banach operator ideal compatible with it. Analogously, we prove that any ideal of $n$-homogeneous polynomials belongs to a coherent sequence of ideals of $k$-homogeneous polynomials.
We introduce and develop the notion of hyper-ideals of multilinear operators between Banach spaces. While the well studied notion of ideals of multilinear operators (multi-ideals) relies on the composition with linear operators, the notion we propose, by considering the composition with multilinear operators, explores more deeply the nonlinear feature of the subject. The results we prove show that, although more restrictive a priori, hyper-ideals enjoy nice general properties and its theory is rich enough to provide distinguished examples in every situation where the corresponding multi-ideal …
We present a survey of past research activities and current results in constructing a mathematical framework describing the principle of local reflexivity for operator ideals and reveal further applications involving operator ideal products consisting of operators which factor through a Hilbert space.
In view of the fact that some classical methods to construct multi-ideals fail in constructing hyper-ideals, in this paper we develop two new methods to construct hyper-ideals of multilinear operators between Banach spaces. These methods generate new classes of multilinear operators and show that some important well studied classes are Banach or p-Banach hyper-ideals.
We present a method of building operators on a Banach space $X$ that generate distinct operator ideals in the algebra $\mathscr{B}(X)$ of bounded linear operators on $X$. We show that there are exactly $2^\mathfrak{c}$ distinct small closed operator ideals on the Schlumprecht space and there is a chain of cardinality $\mathfrak{c}$ of small closed operator ideals on any Schreier space of finite order.
A bounded linear operator $U$ between Banach spaces is universal for the complement of some operator ideal $\mathfrak{J}$ if it is a member of the complement and it factors through every element of the complement of $\mathfrak{J}$. In the first part of this paper, we produce new universal operators for the complements of several ideals and give examples of ideals whose complements do not admit such operators. In the second part of the paper, we use Descriptive Set Theory to study operator ideals. After restricting attention to operators between separable Banach spaces, we call an operator idea…
In this paper we present part I of nonlinear operator ideals theory between metric spaces and Banach spaces. Building upon the definition of operator ideal between arbitrary Banach spaces of A. Pietsch we pose three types of nonlinear versions of operator ideals. We introduce several examples of nonlinear ideals and the relationships between them. For every space ideal $\mathsf{A}$ can be generated by a special nonlinear ideal which consists of those Lipschitz operators admitting a factorization through a Banach space $\mathbf{M}\in\mathsf{A}$. We investigate products and quotients of nonlinea…
We develop general techniques and present an approach to solve the problem of constructing a maximal Banach ideal $({\frak A},{\bf A)}$ which does not satisfy a transfer of the norm estimation in the principle of local reflexivity to its norm ${\bf A}$. This approach leads us to the investigation of product operator ideals containing ${\frak L}_2$ (the collection of all Hilbertian operators) as a factor. Using the local properties of such operator ideals -- which are typical examples of ideals with property (I) and property (S) --, trace duality and an extension of suitable finite rank operato…
We prove that in the reflexive range $1<p<q<\infty$ the algebra of all bounded linear operators on $\ell_p\oplus\ell_q$ has infinitely many closed ideals. This solves a problem raised by A. Pietsch in his book `Operator ideals'.
We develop the duality theory between ideals of multilinear operators and tensor norms that arises from the geometric approach of $Σ$-operators. To this end, we introduce and develop the notions of $Σ$-ideals of multilinear operators and $Σ$-tensor norms. We establish the foundations of this theory by proving a representation theorem for maximal $Σ$-ideals of multilinear operators by finitely generated $Σ$-tensor norms and a duality theorem for $Σ$-tensor norms. For these notions we also develop basic theory and present concrete examples.
The powerful concept of an operator ideal on the class of all Banach spaces makes sense in the real and in the complex case. In both settings we may, for example, consider compact, nuclear, or $2$--summing operators, where the definitions are adapted to each other in a natural way. This paper deals with the question whether or not that fact is based on a general philosophy. Does there exists a one--to--one correspondence between ``real properties'' and ``complex properties'' defining an operator ideal? In other words, does there exist for every real operator ideal a uniquely determined corresp…
In this article, we study the ideals of mid $p$-summing operators. We obtain representation of these operator ideals by tensor norms. These tensor norms are defined by using a particular kind of sequential dual of the class of mid $p$-summable sequences. As a consequence, we prove a characterization of the adjoints of weakly and absolutely mid $p$-summing operators in terms of the operators that are defined by the transformation of dual spaces of certain vector-valued sequence spaces.
In this article, we introduce the Lipschitz bounded approximation property for operator ideals. With this notion, we extend the original work done by Godefroy and Kalton and give some partial answers on the equivalence between the bounded approximation property and the Lipschitz bounded approximation property based on an arbitrary operator ideal. Furthermore, we investigate the three space problems on the preceding bounded approximation properties.
Given an operator ideal I, a Banach space E has the I-approximation property if operators on E can be uniformly approximated on compact subsets of E by operators belonging to I. In this paper the I- approximation property is studied in projective tensor products, spaces of linear functionals, spaces of homogeneous polynomials (in particular, spaces of linear operators), spaces of holomorphic functions and their preduals.
For $α$ an ordinal, we investigate the class $\mathscr{SZ}_α$ consisting of all operators whose Szlenk index is an ordinal not exceeding $ω^α$. Our main result is that $\mathscr{SZ}_α$ is a closed, injective, surjective operator ideal for each $α$. We also study the relationship between the classes $\mathscr{SZ}_α$ and several well-known closed operator ideals.
We use the notion of $\A$-compact sets, which are determined by a Banach operator ideal $\A$, to show that most classic results of certain approximation properties and several Banach operator ideals can be systematically studied under this framework. We say that a Banach space enjoys the $\A$-approximation property if the identity map is uniformly approximable on $\A$-compact sets by finite rank operators. The Grothendieck's classic approximation property is the $\K$-approximation property for $\K$ the ideal of compact operators and the $p$-approximation property is obtained as the $\mathcal N…
In this article, we prove the proximinality of closed unit ball of $M$-ideals of compact operators. We also prove the ball proximinality of $M$-embedded spaces in their biduals. Moreover, we show that $\mathcal{K}(\ell_1)$, the space of compact operators on $\ell_1$, is ball proximinal in $\mathcal{B}(\ell_1)$, the space of bounded operators on $\ell_1$, even though $\mathcal{K}(\ell_1)$ is not an $M$-ideal in $\mathcal{B}(\ell_1)$.
We study the ideals of linear operators between Banach spaces determined by the transformation of vector-valued sequences involving the new sequence space introduced by Karn and Sinha \cite{karnsinha} and the classical spaces of absolutely, weakly and Cohen strongly summable sequences. As applications, we prove a new factorization theorem for absolutely summing operators and a contribution to the existence of infinite dimensional spaces formed by non-absolutely summing operators is given.
In addition to Pisier's counterexample of a non-accessible maximal Banach ideal, we will give a large class of maximal Banach ideals which {\it{are accessible}}. The first step is implied by the observation that a "good behaviour" of trace duality, which is canonically induced by conjugate operator ideals can be extended to adjoint Banach ideals, if and only if these adjoint ideals satisfy an accessibility condition (theorem 3.1). This observation leads in a natural way to a characterization of accessible injective Banach ideals, where we also recognize the appearance of the ideal of {\it{abso…
The monograph contains the detailed exposition of the results obtained by the author during the last several years. In particular it contains an improvement of the well known Calderon - Ryff interpolation theorem and description of "verifying" operators of conditional mathematical expectations {if such an operator leaves an order ideal in $L^1% invariant, then the ideal is an interpolation space}.
The unique maximal ideal in the Banach algebra $L(E)$, $E = (\oplus \ell^\infty(n))_{\ell^1}$, is identified. The proof relies on techniques developed by Laustsen, Loy and Read and a dichotomy result for operators mapping into $L^1$ due to Laustsen, Odell, Schlumprecht and Zsák.
We introduce asymptotic analogues of the Rademacher and martingale type and cotype of Banach spaces and operators acting on them. Some classical local theory results related, for example, to the `automatic-type' phenomenon, the type-cotype duality, or the Maurey-Pisier theorem, are extended to the asymptotic setting. We also investigate operator ideals corresponding to the asymptotic subtype/subcotype. As an application of this theory, we provide a sharp version of a result of Brooker and Lancien by showing that any twisted sum of Banach spaces with Szlenk power types $p$ and $q$ has Szlenk po…
An operator ideal is proper if the only operators of the form $Id_X$ it contains have finite rank. We answer a question posed by Pietsch (1979) by proving that there is no largest proper operator ideal. Our proof is based on an extension of the construction by Aiena-González (2000), of an improjective but essential operator on Gowers-Maurey's shift space $X_S$ (1997), through a new analysis of the algebra of operators on powers of $X_S$. We also prove that certain properties hold for general $\mathbb{C}$-linear operators if and only if they hold for these operators seen as real: for example th…
Given two quasi-Banach ideals \oid{A}{}{} and \oid{B}{}{} we investigate the regular hull of their composition - $(\oid{A}{}{} \circ \oid{B}{}{})^{reg}$. In concrete situations this regular hull appears more often than the composition itself. As a first example we obtain a description for the regular hull of the nuclear operators which is a "reflected" Grothendieck representation:\\ $\oid{N}{}{reg} \stackrel{1}{=} \oid{I}{}{} \circ \oid{W}{}{}$ (theorem 2.1). Further we recognize that the class of such ideals leads to interesting relations concerning the question of the accessibility of (injec…
In this note, we will discuss how to relate an operator ideal on Banach spaces to the sequential structures it defines. Concrete examples of ideals of compact, weakly compact, completely continuous, Banach-Saks and weakly Banach-Saks operators will be demonstrated.
We show for $2\le p<\infty$ and subspaces $X$ of quotients of $L_{p}$ with a $1$-unconditional finite-dimensional Schauder decomposition that $K(X,\ell_{p})$ is an $M$-ideal in $L(X,\ell_{p})$.
Let $X$ be a Banach space with $\dim X>1$ such that $X^{\ast}$, its dual, is separable and $\mathcal{B}(X)$ the algebra of bounded linear operators on $X$. In this paper, we study the passage of property of being supercyclic from an operator $T\in\mathcal{B}(X)$ to the left and right multiplication induced by $T$ on separable admissible Banach ideal of $\mathcal{B}(X)$. We give a sufficient condition for the tensor product $T\widehat{\otimes}R$ of two operators to be supercyclic. As a consequence, we give another equivalent conditions for the Supercyclicity Criterion.
For an operator ideal $\mathcal A$, we study the composition operator ideals ${\mathcal A}\circ{\mathcal K}$, ${\mathcal K}\circ{\mathcal A}$ and ${\mathcal K}\circ{\mathcal A}\circ{\mathcal K}$, where $\mathcal K$ is the ideal of compact operators. We introduce a notion of an $\mathcal A$-approximation property on a Banach space and characterise it in terms of the density of finite rank operators in ${\mathcal A}\circ{\mathcal K}$ and ${\mathcal K}\circ{\mathcal A}$. We propose the notions of $\ell_{\infty}$-extension and $\ell_{1}$-lifting properties for an operator ideal $\mathcal A$ and st…
We investigate quasi-Banach operator ideal products $({\frak{A}}\circ{\frak{B}},\mathbf{A\circ B})$ which contain $(\frak{L}_2, \mathbf{L}_2)$ as a factor. In particular, we ask for conditions which guarantee that $\mathbf{A\circ B}$ is even a norm if each factor of the product is a 1-Banach ideal. In doing so, we reveal the strong influence of the existence of such a norm in relation to the accessibility of the product ideal and the structure of its factors.
We classify the closed ideals of bounded operators acting on the Banach spaces $\left(\bigoplus_{n \in \mathbb{N}} \ell_2^n\right)_{c_0} \oplus c_0(Γ)$ and $\left(\bigoplus_{n \in \mathbb{N}} \ell_2^n\right)_{\ell_1} \oplus \ell_1(Γ)$ for every uncountable cardinal $Γ$.
Considering the successful theory of multiple summing multilinear operators as a prototype, we introduce the classes of multiple Cohen strongly p-summing multilinear operators and polynomials. The adequacy of these classes under the viewpoint of the theory of multilinear and polynomial ideals and holomorphy types is discussed in detail. Some abstract results are also proved in the abstract setting of the full general Pietsch Domination Theorem due to Pellegrino, Santos and Seoane-Sepúlveda.
Let $ω_1$ be the first uncountable ordinal. By a result of Rudin, bounded operators on the Banach space $C([0,ω_1])$ have a natural representation as $[0,ω_1]\times 0,ω_1]$-matrices. Loy and Willis observed that the set of operators whose final column is continuous when viewed as a scalar-valued function on $[0,ω_1]$ defines a maximal ideal of codimension one in the Banach algebra $\mathscr{B}(C([0,ω_1]))$ of bounded operators on $C([0,ω_1])$. We give a coordinate-free characterization of this ideal and deduce from it that $\mathscr{B}(C([0,ω_1]))$ contains no other maximal ideals. We then obt…
We prove when a Banach ideal of linear operators defined, or characterized, by the transformation of vector-valued sequences is maximal. Known results are recovered as particular cases and new information is obtained. To accomplish this task we study a tensor quasi-norm determined by the underlying sequence classes. The duality theory for these tensor quasi-norms is also developed.
Let $1<p,\,q<\infty$. It is shown for complex scalars that there are no nontrivial $M$-ideals in $L(L_p[0,1])$ if $p\neq 2$, and $K(\ell_p(\ell_q^n)$ is the only nontrivial $M$-ideal in $L(\ell_p(\ell_q^n)$. This proves a conjecture of C.-M. Cho and W. B. Johnson.
We prove that the spaces $\mathcal L(\ell_p,\mathrm{c}_0)$, $\mathcal L(\ell_p,\ell_\infty)$ and $\mathcal L(\ell_1,\ell_q)$ of operators with $1<p,q<\infty$ have continuum many closed ideals. This extends and improves earlier works by Schlumprecht and Zsák, by Wallis, and by Sirotkin and Wallis. Several open problems remain. Key to our construction of closed ideals are matrices with the Restricted Isometry Property that come from Compressed Sensing.
In this paper we will give necessary and sufficient conditions for the operator $T_ν^s$ to be in the symmetrically normed ideal $\mathcal{C}_Φ$ for an arbitrary symmetric norming function $Φ$ where $T_ν$ is the Toeplitz operator on the generalized Fock Space (also known as the generalized Bargmann-Fock space) with a positive measure symbol $ν$ and $0<s\leq 1$.
In this article, we show that the predual $\mathcal{G}_w(U)$ of the weighted space of holomorphic functions has the $\mathcal{I}$- approximation property if and only if $E$ has the $\mathcal{I}$- approximation property, where $\mathcal{I}$ is a suitably chosen operator ideal, and $\it{w}$ is a radial weight defined on a balanced open subset U of a Banach space $E$.
We study the lattice of closed ideals in the algebra of continuous linear operators acting on $p$th Tandori and $p'$th Cesàro sequence spaces, $1\leqslant p<\infty$, which we show are isomorphic to the classical sequence spaces $(\oplus_{n=1}^\infty\ell_\infty^n)_p$ and $(\oplus_{n=1}^\infty\ell_1^n)_{p'}$, respectively. We also show that Tandori sequence spaces are complemented in certain Lorentz sequence spaces, and that the lattice of closed ideals for certain other Lorentz and Garling sequence spaces has infinite cardinality.
We study those operators on a Hilbert space that can be lifted / extended to any twisted Hilbert space. We prove that these form an ideal of operators which contains all the Schatten classes. We characterize those multiplication operators on $\ell_p$ that are liftable / extensible through centralizers.
Let $λ$ be an infinite cardinal number and let $\ell_\infty^c(λ)$ denote the subspace of $\ell_\infty(λ)$ consisting of all functions that assume at most countably many non-zero values. We classify all infinite dimensional complemented subspaces of $\ell_\infty^c(λ)$, proving that they are isomorphic to $\ell_\infty^c(κ)$ for some cardinal number $κ$. Then we show that the Banach algebra of all bounded linear operators on $\ell_\infty^c(λ)$ or $\ell_\infty(λ)$ has the unique maximal ideal consisting of operators through which the identity operator does not factor. Using similar techniques, we …
Consider a Banach space valued measurable function $f$ and an operator $u$ from the space where {$f$} takes values. If $f $ is Pettis integrable, a classical result due to J. Diestel shows that composing it with $u$ gives a Bochner integrable function $u \circ f$ whenever $u$ is absolutely summing. In a previous work we have shown that a well-known interpolation technique for operator ideals allows to prove under some requirements that a composition of a $p$-Pettis integrable function with a $q$-summing operator provides an $r$-Bochner integrable function. In this paper a new abstract inclusio…
We study the space of $p$-compact operators $\mathcal K_p$, using the theory of tensor norms and operator ideals. We prove that $\mathcal K_p$ is associated to $/d_p$, the left injective associate of the Chevet-Saphar tensor norm $d_p$ (which is equal to $g_{p'}'$). This allows us to relate the theory of $p$-summing operators with that of $p$-compact operators. With the results known for the former class and appropriate hypothesis on $E$ and $F$ we prove that $\mathcal K_p(E;F)$ is equal to $\mathcal K_q(E;F)$ for a wide range of values of $p$ and $q$, and show that our results are sharp. We a…
We study tensor norms that destroy unconditionality in the following sense: for every Banach space $E$ with unconditional basis, the $n$-fold tensor product of $E$ (with the corresponding tensor norm) does not have unconditional basis. We establish an easy criterion to check weather a tensor norm destroys unconditionality or not. Using this test we get that all injective and projective tensor norms different from $\varepsilon$ and $π$ destroy unconditionality, both in full and symmetric tensor products. We present applications to polynomial ideals: we show that many usual polynomial ideals nev…
A standard technique in infinite dimensional holomorphy, which produced several useful results, uses the Borel transform to represent linear functionals on certain spaces of multilinear operators between Banach spaces as multilinear operators. In this paper we develop a technique to represent linear functionals, as linear operators, on spaces of multilinear operators that are beyond the scope of the standard technique. Concrete applications to some well studied classes of multilinear operators, including the class of compact multilinear operators, and to one new class are provided. We can see,…
We formulate general conditions which imply that $L(X,Y)$, the space of operators from a Banach space $X$ to a Banach space $Y$, has $2^{\mathfrak c}$ closed ideals where $\mathfrak c$ is the cardinality of the continuum. These results are applied to classical sequence spaces and Tsirelson type spaces. In particular, we prove that the cardinality of the set of closed ideals in $L(\ell_p\oplus\ell_q)$ is exactly $2^{\mathfrak c}$ for all $1<p<q<\infty$, which in turn gives an alternate proof of the recent result of Johnson and Schechtman that $L(L_p)$ also has $2^{\mathfrak c}$ closed ideals fo…
Fixed a Banach operator ideal $\mathcal A$, we introduce and investigate two new approximation properties, which are strictly weaker than the bounded approximation property (BAP) for $\mathcal A$ of Lima, Lima and Oja (2010). We call them the weak BAP for $\mathcal A$ and the local BAP for $\mathcal A$, showing that the latter is in turn strictly weaker than the former. Under this framework, we address the question of approximation properties passing from dual spaces to underlying spaces. We relate the weak and local BAPs for $\mathcal A$ with approximation properties given by tensor norms and…
Theorem A and Theorem B of [1] state that for $1<p<\infty$ the lattice of closed ideals of $\mathcal{L}(\ell_p,c_0)$, $\mathcal{L}(\ell_p,\ell_\infty)$ and of $\mathcal{L}(\ell_1,\ell_p)$ are at least of cardinality $2^ω$. Here we show that the cardinality of the lattice of closed ideals of $\mathcal{L}(\ell_p,c_0)$, $\mathcal{L}(\ell_p,\ell_\infty)$ and of $\mathcal{L}(\ell_1,\ell_p)$, is at least $2^{2^ω}$, and thus equal to it.
We construct various examples of non-trivial closed ideals of the compact-by-approximable algebra $\mathfrak{A}_X =:\mathcal K(X)/\mathcal A(X)$ on Banach spaces $X$ failing the approximation property. The examples include the following: (i) if $X$ has cotype $2$, $Y$ has type $2$, $\mathfrak{A}_X \neq \{0\}$ and $\mathfrak{A}_Y \neq \{0\}$, then $\mathfrak{A}_{X \oplus Y}$ has at least $2$ closed ideals, (ii) there are closed subspaces $X \subset \ell^p$ for $4 < p < \infty$ and $X \subset c_0$ such that $\mathfrak{A}_X$ contains a non-trivial closed ideal, (iii) there is a Banach space $Z$ s…
