The number of apparent double points of a smooth, irreducible projective variety $X$ of dimension $n$ in $\Proj^{2n+1}$ is the number of secant lines to $X$ passing through the general point of $\Proj^{2n+1}$. This classical notion dates back to Severi. In the present paper we classify smooth varieties of dimension at most three having one apparent double point. The techniques developed for this purpose allow to treat a wider class of projective varieties.
A classification of double flag varieties of complexity 0 and 1 is obtained. An application of this problem to decomposing tensor products of irreducible representations of semisimple Lie groups is considered.
We study a class of Calabi-Yau varieties that can be represented as a non-singular model of a double covering of $\mathbb P^3$ branched along certain octic surfaces. We compute Euler numbers of all constructed examples and describe their resolution of singularities.
We prove the generic injectivity of the Prym map, sending a double covering of an elliptic curve ramified at r>4 points to its polarized Prym variety. For r=6 the map is birational.
We complete the study of birational geometry of Fano fiber spaces $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$, the fiber of which is a Fano double hypersurface of index 1. For each family of these varieties we either prove birational rigidity or produce explicitly non-trivial structures of Fano fiber spaces. A new linear method of studying movable systems on Fano fiber spaces $V/{\mathbb P}^1$ is developed.
We prove that a general Fano fibration $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$, the fiber of which is a double Fano hypersurface of index 1, is birationally superrigid provided it is sufficiently twisted over the base. In particular, on $V$ there are no other structures of a rationally connected fibration. The proof is based on the method of maximal singularities.
We continue to study birational geometry of Fano fibrations $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$ the fibers of which are Fano double hypersurfaces of index 1. For a majority of families of this type, which do not satisfy the condition of sufficient twistedness over the base, we prove birational rigidity (in particular, it means that there are no other structures of a fibration into rationally connected varieties) and compute their groups of birational self-maps. We considerably improve the principal components of the method of maximal singularities, in the first place, the technique of counting multip…
Let $G$ be a complex affine algebraic group and $H, F \subset G$ be closed subgroups. The homogeneous space $G / H$ can be equipped with structure of a smooth quasiprojective variety. The situation is different for double coset varieties $\dcosets{F}{G}{H}$. In this paper we give examples showing that the variety $\dcosets{F}{G}{H}$ does not necessarily exist. We also address the question of existence of $\dcosets{F}{G}{H}$ in the category of constructible spaces and show that under sufficiently general assumptions $\dcosets{F}{G}{H}$ does exist as a constructible space.
In this paper we construct Shimura subvarieties of dimension bigger than one of the moduli space of polarised abelian varieties of a given dimension, which are generically contained in the Pym loci of (ramified) double covers. The idea is to adapt the techniques already used to construct Shimura curves in the Prym loci to the higher dimensional case, namely to use families of Galois covers of the projective line. The case of abelian covers is treated in detail, since in this case it is possible to make explicit computations that allow to verify a sufficient condition for such a family to yield…
We develop the quadratic technique of proving birational rigidity of Fano-Mori fibre spaces over a higher-dimensional base. As an application, we prove birational rigidity of generic fibrations into Fano double spaces of dimension $M\geqslant 4$ and index one over a rationally connected base of dimension at most $\frac12 (M-2)(M-1)$. An estimate for the codimension of the subset of hypersurfaces of a given degree in the projective space with a positive-dimensional singular set is obtained, which is close to the optimal one.
We consider semi-orthogonal decompositions of derived categories for 3-dimensional projective varieties in the case when the varieties have ordinary double points.
The presented paper is a continuation of the series of papers arXiv:1810.00606 and arXiv:1903.09373. In this paper, utilizing Batyrev and Borisov's duality construction on nef-partitions, we generalize the recipe in arXiv:1810.00606 and arXiv:1903.09373 to construct a pair of singular double cover Calabi--Yau varieties $(Y,Y^{\vee})$ over toric manifolds and compute their topological Euler characteristics and Hodge numbers. In the $3$-dimensional cases, we show that $(Y,Y^{\vee})$ forms a topological mirror pair, i.e., $h^{p,q}(Y)=h^{3-p,q}(Y^{\vee})$ for all $p,q$.
The number of apparent double points of an irreducible projective variety $X$ of dimension $n$ in $\mathbb{P}^{2n+1}$ is the number of secant lines to $X$ passing through a general point of $\mathbb{P}^{2n+1}$. This classical notion dates back to Severi. Smooth threefolds having one apparent double point (shortly OADP threefolds) have been classified in 2004 by Ciliberto, Mella and Russo. In 2011, Ciliberto and Russo have classified normal OADP threefolds such that the so-called fundamental surface is a plane. In this thesis the case in which the fundamental surface is not a plane is considere…
Let $\GroupG$ be a connected reductive algebraic group, $\GroupH \subsetneq \GroupG$ a reductive subgroup and $\GroupT \subset \GroupG$ a maximal torus. It is well known that if charactersitic of the ground field is zero, then the homogeneous space $\GroupG/\GroupH$ is a smooth affine variety, but never an affine space. The situation changes when one passes to double coset varieties $\dcosets{\GroupF}{\GroupG}{\GroupH}$. In this paper we consider the case of $\GroupG$ classical and $\GroupH$ connected spherical and prove that either the double coset variety $\dcosets{\GroupT}{\GroupG}{\GroupH}…
In this article we classify all the smooth threefolds of P^5 with an apparent quadruple point provided that the family of its 4-secant lines is an irreducible (first order) congruence. This is sufficient to conclude the classification of all the smooth codimension two varieties of P^n with one apparent (n-1)-point and with irreducible family of (n-1)-secant lines.
Let $ϕ: X \to \mathbb P^n$ be a double cover branched along a smooth hypersurface of degree $2m, 2 \leq m \leq n-1$. We study the varieties of minimal rational tangents $\mathcal C_x \subset \mathbb P T_x(X)$ at a general point $x$ of $X$. We describe the homogeneous ideal of $\mathcal C_x$ and show that the projective isomorphism type of $\mathcal C_x$ varies in a maximal way as $x$ varies over general points of $X$. Our description of the ideal of $\mathbb C_x$ implies a certain rigidity property of the covering morphism $ϕ$. As an application of this rigidity, we show that any finite morphi…
We unify aspects of the equivariant geometry of type $D$ quiver representation varieties, double Grassmannians, and symmetric varieties $GL(a+b)/GL(a)\times GL(b)$; in particular we translate results about singularities of orbit closures, combinatorics of orbit closure containment, and torus equivariant $K$-theory between these three families. These results are all obtained from our generalization of a construction of Zelevinsky for type $A$ quivers to the type $D$ setting. More precisely, we give explicit embeddings with nice properties of homogeneous fiber bundles over type $D$ quiver repres…
Iterating the procedure of making a double cover over a given variety, we construct large families of smooth higher-dimensional Fano varieties of index 1. These varieties can be realized as complete intersections in various weighted projective spaces. A generic variety in these families is proved to be birationally superrigid; in particular, it admits no non-trivial structures of a fibration into rationally connected (or uniruled) varieties, it is non-rational and its groups of birational and biregular self-maps coincide.
In this paper we prove that, over a Hilbertian ground field, surfaces with two conic fibrations whose fibres have non-zero intersection product have the Hilbert property. We then give an application of this result, namely the verification of the Hilbert property for certain del Pezzo varieties.
Three-dimensional del Pezzo varieties of degree 2 are double covers of projective space $\mathbb{P}^{3}$ branced in a quadric. In this paper we prove that if a del Pezzo variety of degree 2 has exactly 15 nodes then the corresponding quadric is a hyperplane section of the Igusa quartic or, equivalently, all such del Pezzo varieties are members of one particular linear system on the Coble fourfold. Their automorphism groups are induced from the automorphism group of Coble fourfold. Also we classify all $G$-birationally rigid varieties of such type.
The goal of this paper is to give a method to compute the space of infinitesimal deformations of a double cover of a smooth algebraic variety. The space of all infinitesimal deformations has a representation as a direct sum of two subspaces. One is isomorphic to the space of simultaneous deformations of the branch locus and the base of the double covering. The second summand is the subspace of deformations of the double covering which induce trivial deformations of the branch divisor. The main result of the paper is a description of the effect of imposing singularities in the branch locus. As …
We construct a relative Chow-Kunneth decomposition for a conic bundle over a surface such that the middle projector gives the Prym variety of the associated double covering of the discriminant of the conic bundle. This gives a refinement (up to an isogeny) of Beauville's theorem on the relation between the intermediate Jacobian of the conic bundle and the Prym variety of the double covering.
Let X be the direct product of two Grassmann varieties of k- and l-planes in a finite-dimensional vector space V, and let B be the isotropy group of a complete flag in V. We consider B-orbits in X, which are an analog to Schubert cells in Grassmannians. We describe this set of orbits combinatorially and construct desingularizations for the closures of these orbits, similar to the Bott--Samelson desingularizations for Schubert varieties.
In this paper, we show that if $X$ is a smooth variety of general type of dimension $m \geq 2$, for which its canonical map induces a double cover onto $Y$, where $Y$ is a projective bundle over $\mathbf P^1$, or onto a projective space or onto a quadric hypersurface, embedded by a complete linear series, then the general deformation of the canonical morphism of $X$ again is canonical and again induces a double cover. The second part of the article deals with the existence or non existence of canonical double structures on rational varieties. The negative result in this article has consequence…
We study the behavior of theta characteristics on an algebraic curve under the specialization map to a tropical curve. We show that each effective theta characteristic on the tropical curve is the specialization of $2^{g-1}$ even theta characteristics and $2^{g-1}$ odd theta characteristics. We then study the relationship between unramified double covers of a tropical curve and its theta characteristics, and use this to define the tropical Prym variety.
Let X be a nonsingular projective algebraic variety, and let S be a line bundle on X. Let A = (a_1,..., a_n) be a vector of integers. Consider a map f from a pointed curve (C,x_1,...,x_n) to X satisfying the following condition: the line bundle f*(S) has a meromorphic section with zeroes and poles exactly at the marked points x_i with orders prescribed by the integers a_i. A compactification of the space of maps based upon the above condition is given by the moduli space of stable maps to rubber over X. The main result of the paper is an explicit formula (in tautological classes) for the push-…
Let $X^n \subset P^N$ be a nonsingular, nondegenerate projective variety of dimension $n$ and codimension $N-n \ge 2$. Let $|C_X|$ be the linear system determined by the double-point divisor obtained by generically projecting $X$ to a hypersurface in $P^{n+1}$. We classify those varieties for which $C_X$ is not ample, or equivalently, does not separate points of $X$. We call such varieties Roth varieties and prove that they exist for all dimensions $n \ge 2$ and give a description of their properties. For example, in many cases Roth varieties are Castelnuovo varieties. Positivity results for t…
It was shown by Kuznetsov that complete intersections of $n$ generic quadrics in ${\mathbb P}^{2n-1}$ are related by Homological Projective Duality to certain non-commutative (Clifford) varieties which are in some sense birational to double covers of ${\mathbb P}^{n-1}$ ramified over symmetric determinantal hypersurfaces. Mirror symmetry predicts that the Hodge numbers of the complete intersections of quadrics must coincide with the appropriately defined Hodge numbers of these double covers. We observe that these numbers must be different from the well-known Batyrev's stringy Hodge numbers, el…
In this work, we extend the concept of the double of an ideal defined in \cite{G2}, to the context of modules. We also obtain the genericity of the infinitesimal Lipschitz condition A for an enlarged class of analytic spaces.
We construct two pencils of bielliptic curves of genus three and genus five. The first pencil is associated with a general abelian surface with a polarization of type $(1,2)$. The second pencil is related to the first by an unramified double cover, the Prym variety of which is canonically isomorphic to the Jacobian of a very general curve of genus two. Our results are obtained by analyzing suitable elliptic fibrations on the associated Kummer surfaces and rational double covers among them.
To every double cover ramified in two points of a general trigonal curve of genus g, one can associate an étale double cover of a tetragonal curve of genus g+1. We show that the corresponding Prym varieties are canonically isomorphic as principally polarized abelian varieties.
In this paper we consider double covers of the projective space in relation with the problem of extensions of varieties, specifically of extensions of canonical curves to $K3$ surfaces and Fano 3-folds. In particular we consider $K3$ surfaces which are double covers of the plane branched over a general sextic: we prove that the general curve in the linear system pull back of plane curves of degree $k\geq 7$ lies on a unique $K3$ surface. If $k\leq 6$ the general such curve is instead extendable to a higher dimensional variety. In the cases $k=4,5,6$, this gives the existence of singular index …
We study nodal del Pezzo 3-folds of degree $1$ (also known as double Veronese cones) with $28$ singularities, which is the maximal possible number of singularities for such varieties. We show that they are in one-to-one correspondence with smooth plane quartics and use this correspondence to study their automorphism groups. As an application, we find all $G$-birationally rigid varieties of this kind, and construct an infinite number of non-conjugate embeddings of the group $\mathfrak{S}_4$ into the space Cremona group.
In the first half of this article, we review the Steinberg theory for double flag varieties for symmetric pairs. For a special case of the symmetric space of type AIII, we will consider $ X = GL_{2n}/P_{(n,n)} \times GL_n / B_n^+ \times GL_n / B_n^- $ on which $ K = GL_n \times GL_n $ acts diagonally. We give a classification of $ K $-orbits in $ X $, and explicit combinatorial description of the Steinberg maps. In the latter half, we develop the theory of embedding of a double flag variety into a larger one. This embedding is a powerful tool to study different types of double flag varieties i…
We present a construction of noncommutative double mirrors to complete intersections in toric varieties. This construction unifies existing sporadic examples and explains the underlying combinatorial and physical reasons for their existence.
Given the Prym variety of an étale double cover one can define analogues of the classical Brill-Noether loci on Jacobians of curves. Recent work by Lahoz and Naranjo shows that the Brill-Noether locus $V^2$ completely determines the covering. In this paper we describe the singular locus and the irreducible components of $V^2$.
The construction of double point cobordism groups of vector bundles on varieties in the work [Lee-P] (arXiv:1002.1500 [math.AG]) of Yuan-Pin Lee and Rahul Pandharipande gives immediately double point cobordism groups of filtered vector bundles on varieties. We note also that among the four basic operations -- direct sum, tensor product, dual, and Hom -- on vector bundles on varieties, only taking dual is compatible with double point cobordisms of vector bundles on varieties in general, by a demonstration on an example of vector bundles on Calabi-Yau 3-folds. A question on refined and/or higher…
We classify three-dimensional nodal Fano varieties that are double covers of smooth quadrics branched over intersections with quartics acted on by finite simple non-abelian groups, and study their rationality.
Let G be a semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic p. Generalizing the construction of the PBW filtration on Weyl modules for G we construct a G-stable filtration on tensor products of Weyl modules which we call the induced PBW filtration. We use this filtration to give some purely representation-theoretic conditions which are equivalent to the existence of a Frobenius splitting of the double flag variety $G/B \times G/B$ that maximally compatibly splits the diagonal. In particular, this gives a sufficient condition for Wahl's conjecture to hold…
Lee and Pandharipande studied a "double point" algebraic cobordism theory of varieties equipped with vector bundles, and speculated that some features of that story might extend to the case of varieties with principal G-bundles. This note shows that this expectation holds rationally, and more generally after inverting the torsion index of the group, for reductive G. We show that (after inverting the torsion index) the full theory for bundles on varieties is an extension of scalars of standard algebraic cobordism, that the theory for a point is dual to Omega^*(BG), and describe how the theory f…
We show that the non-Archimedean skeleton of the Prym variety associated to an unramified double cover of an algebraic curve is naturally isomorphic (as a principally polarized tropical abelian variety) to the tropical Prym variety of the associated tropical double cover. This confirms a conjecture by Jensen and the first author. We prove a new upper bound on the dimension of the Prym-Brill-Noether locus for generic unramified double covers of curves with fixed even gonality on the base. Our methods also give a new proof of the classical Prym-Brill-Noether Theorem for generic unramified double…
We construct explicit examples of elementary extremal contractions, both birational and of fiber type, from smooth projective n-dimensional varieties, n\geq 4, onto smooth projective varieties, arising from classical projective geometry and defined over sufficiently small fields, not necessarily algebraically closed. The examples considered come from particular special homaloidal and subhomaloidal linear systems, which usually are degenerations of general phenomena classically investigated by Bordiga, Severi, Todd, Room, Fano, Semple and Tyrrell and more recently by Ein and Shepherd-Barron. Th…
Cluster varieties are geometric objects that have recently found applications in several areas of mathematics and mathematical physics. This thesis studies the geometry of a large class of cluster varieties associated to compact oriented surfaces with boundary. The main original contribution of this thesis is to develop the properties of a particular kind of cluster variety called the symplectic double. We show that the symplectic double is birational to a certain moduli space of local systems associated to a doubled surface. We define a version of the notion of measured lamination on such a s…
