In the first part of this paper we study minimal representations of simply connected simple split groups of type $D_k$ or $E_k$ over local non-archimedian fields. Our main result is an explicit formula for the spherical vectors in these representations. In the case of real and complex groups such a formula was obtained recently in hep-th/0107222. We also use our techniques to study the structure of the space of smooth vectors in the minimal representation recovering some results of Magaard and Savin. In the second part we consider groups as above defined over a global field. In this situation we describe the form of the automorphic functional on the minimal representation of the corresponding adelic group.
For an unramified connected reductive group $G$ defined over a number field $F$, consider the part of the spherical automorphic spectrum with cuspidal support $[T,\mathcal{O}(χ)]$, where $T$ is a maximal torus and $χ$ is an unramified automorphic character. We define a normalization of the Eisenstein series and we give the precise spectral decomposition of the closure of the subspace spanned by the normalized pseudo-Eiseinstein series. The proof uses residue distributions which were introduced by the third author (in joint work with G. Heckman) in the study of graded affine Hecke algebras, whi…
Arthur has conjectured that the unitarity of a number of representations can be shown by finding appropriate automorphic realizations. This has been verified for classical groups by Moeglin and for the exceptional Chevalley group G_2 by Kim. In this paper we extend their results on spherical representations to the remaining exceptional groups E_6, E_7, E_8, and F_4. In particular we prove Arthur's conjecture that the spherical constituent of an unramified principal series of a Chevalley group over any local field of characteristic zero is unitarizable if its Langlands parameter coincides with …
Let $G$ be a split reductive group over a number field $F$. We consider the computation of the inner product of two $K$-spherical pseudo Eisenstein series of $G$ supported in $[T,\mathcal{O}(1)]$ by means of residues, following a classical approach initiated by Langlands. We show that only the singularities of the intertwining operators due to the poles of the completed Dedekind zeta function $Λ_F$ contribute to the spectrum, while the singularities caused by the zeroes of $Λ_F$ do not contribute to any of the iterated residues which arise as a result of the necessary contour shifts. In the co…
In this paper we analyze Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms on a finite cover $G$ of an adelic split simply-laced group. Let $π$ be a minimal or next-to-minimal automorphic representation of $G$. We prove that any $η\in π$ is completely determined by its Whittaker coefficients with respect to (possibly degenerate) characters of the unipotent radical of a fixed Borel subgroup, analogously to the Piatetski-Shapiro--Shalika formula for cusp forms on $GL_n$. We also derive explicit formulas expressing the form, as well as all its maximal parabolic Fourier coefficient in terms of these Whitt…
We investigate Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms on split simply-laced Lie groups G. We show that for automorphic representations of small Gelfand-Kirillov dimension the Fourier coefficients are completely determined by certain degenerate Whittaker vectors on G. Although we expect our results to hold for arbitrary simply-laced groups, we give complete proofs only for G=SL(3) and G=SL(4). This is based on a method of Ginzburg that associates Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms with nilpotent orbits of G. Our results complement and extend recent results of Miller and Sahi. We also …
We study the question of Eulerianity (factorizability) for Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms, and we prove a general transfer theorem that allows one to deduce the Eulerianity of certain coefficients from that of another coefficient. We also establish a `hidden' invariance property of Fourier coefficients. We apply these results to minimal and next-to-minimal automorphic representations, and deduce Eulerianity for a large class of Fourier and Fourier-Jacobi coefficients. In particular, we prove Eulerianity for parabolic Fourier coefficients with characters of maximal rank for a class o…
In this article, we improve our main results from \emph{Chow groups and $L$-derivatives of automorphic motives for unitary groups} in two direction: First, we allow ramified places in the CM extension $E/F$ at which we consider representations that are spherical with respect to a certain special maximal compact subgroup, by formulating and proving an analogue of the Kudla--Rapoport conjecture for exotic smooth Rapoport--Zink spaces. Second, we lift the restriction on the components at split places of the automorphic representation, by proving a more general vanishing result on certain cohomolo…
We show that Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms attached to minimal or next-to-minimal automorphic representations of ${\mathrm{SL}}_n(\mathbb{A})$ are completely determined by certain highly degenerate Whittaker coefficients. We give an explicit formula for the Fourier expansion, analogously to the Piatetski-Shapiro-Shalika formula. In addition, we derive expressions for Fourier coefficients associated to all maximal parabolic subgroups. These results have potential applications for scattering amplitudes in string theory.
We prove that the local components of an automorphic representation of an adelic semisimple group have equal rank in the sense defined earlier by the second author. Our theorem is an analogue of the results previously obtained by Howe, Li, Dvorsky--Sahi, and Kobayashi--Savin. Unlike previous works which are based on explicit matrix realizations and existence of parabolic subgroups with abelian unipotent radicals, our proof works uniformly for all of the (classical as well as exceptional) groups under consideration. Our result is an extension of the statement known for several semisimple groups…
Let X be a smooth projective curve. Write Bun_{SO_{2n}} for the moduli stack of SO_{2n}-torsors on X. We give a geometric interpretation of the automorphic function f on Bun_{SO_{2n}} corresponding to the minimal representation. Namely, we construct a perverse sheaf K on Bun_{SO_{2n}} such that f should be equal to the trace of Frobenius of K plus some constant function. We also calculate K explicitely for curves of genus zero and one. The construction of K is based on some explicit geometric formulas for the Fourier coefficients of f on one hand, and on the geometric theta-lifting on the othe…
In this paper we consider some global constructions of liftings of automorphic representations attached to some commuting pairs in the exceptional group $F_4$. We consider two families of integrals. The first uses the minimal representation on the double cover of $F_4$, and in the second we consider examples of integrals of descent type associated with unipotent orbits of $F_4$.
We discuss generalizations of the Langlands program, from reductive groups to the local and automorphic spectra of spherical varieties, and to more general representations arising as "quantizations" of suitable Hamiltonian spaces. To a spherical $G$-variety $X$, one associates a dual group ${^LG_X}$ and an $L$-value (encoded in a representation of ${^LG_X}$), which conjecturally describe the local and automorphic spectra of the variety. This sets up a problem of functoriality, for any morphism ${^LG_X}\to {^LG_Y}$ of dual groups. We review, and generalize, Langlands' "beyond endoscopy" approac…
This paper deals with the analytic continuation of holomorphic automorphic forms on a Lie group $G$. We prove that for any discrete subgroup $Γ$ of $G$ there always exists a non-trivial holomorphic automorphic form, i.e., there exists a $Γ$-spherical unitary highest weight representation of $G$. Holomorphic automorphic forms have the property that they analytically extend to holomorphic functions on a complex Ol'shanski\uı semigroup $S\subeq G_\C$. As an application we prove that the bounded holomorphic functions on $Γ\bs S\subseteq Γ\bs G_\C$ separate the points.
Langlands has described the irreducible admissible representations of $T$, when $T$ is the group of points of an algebraic torus over a local field. Also, Langlands described the automorphic representations of $T_{\mathbb A}$ when $T_{\mathbb A}$ is the group of adelic points of an algebraic torus over a global field $F$. We describe irreducible (in the local setting) and automorphic (in the global setting) $ε$-genuine representations for covers of tori, also known as metaplectic tori, which arise from a framework of Brylinski and Deligne. In particular, our results include a description of sp…
Theta series for exceptional groups have been suggested as a possible description of the eleven-dimensional quantum supermembrane. We present explicit formulae for these automorphic forms whenever the underlying Lie group $G$ is split (or complex) and simply laced. Specifically, we review and construct explicitly the minimal representation of $G$, generalizing the Schrödinger representation of symplectic groups. We compute the spherical vector in this representation, i.e. the wave function invariant under the maximal compact subgroup, which plays the role of the summand in the automorphic thet…
Let F be a global field, G an unramified quasi-split reductive group over F and chi an everywhere unramified automorphic character of a maximal maximally split torus of G. Using Langlands-Shahidi theory, we compute the meromorphic function defined by the action of a global standard intertwining operator associated to chi on a spherical vector and show that the ratio of its poles in the positive Weyl chamber is well behaved.
Let g be a complex semi-simple Lie algebra and g be a semisimple subalgebra of g. Consider the branching problem of decomposing the simple g-representations V as a sum of simple grepresentations V. When g = g x g, it is the tensor product decomposition. The multiplicity space Mult(V, V) satisfies V = $\oplus$ V Mult(V, V) $\otimes$ V, where the sum runs over the isomorphism classes of simple g-representations. In the case when g is spherical of minimal rank, we describe Mult(V, V) as the intersection of kernels of powers of root operators in some weight space of the dual space V * of V. When g…
Given a spherical variety X for a group G over a non-archimedean local field k, the Plancherel decomposition for L^2(X) should be related to "distinguished" Arthur parameters into a dual group closely related to that defined by Gaitsgory and Nadler. Motivated by this, we develop, under some assumptions on the spherical variety, a Plancherel formula for L^2(X) up to discrete (modulo center) spectra of its "boundary degenerations", certain G-varieties with more symmetries which model X at infinity. Along the way, we discuss the asymptotic theory of subrepresentations of C^{infty}(X), and establi…
We consider the Fourier expansions of automorphic forms on general Lie groups, with a particular emphasis on exceptional groups. After describing some principles underlying known results on GL(n), Sp(4), and G_2, we perform an analysis of the expansions on split real forms of E_6 and E_7 where simplifications take place for automorphic realizations of real representations which have small Gelfand-Kirillov dimension. Though the character varieties are more complicated for exceptional groups, we explain how the nonvanishing Fourier coefficients for small representations behave analogously to Fou…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the traces of Hecke operators for spherical discrete automorphic representations of fixed level on general split reductive groups over $\mathbb{Q}$. Under a condition on the analytic behavior of intertwining operators, which is known for the classical groups and the exceptional group $G_2$, we obtain the expected asymptotics in terms of the spherical Plancherel measure and an explicit estimate for the remainder.
We study the number $N_{\mathrm{sd}}^K(λ)$ of self-dual cuspidal automorphic representations of $GL_N(\mathbb{A_Q})$ which are $K$-spherical with respect to a fixed compact subgroup $K$ and whose Laplacian eigenvalue is $\leq λ$. We prove Weak Weyl's Law for $N_{\mathrm{sd}}^K(λ)$ in the form that there are positive constants $c_1, c_2$ (depending on $K$) and $d$ such that $c_1λ^{d/2}\leq N_{\mathrm{sd}}^K(λ)\leq c_2λ^{d/2}$ for all sufficiently large $λ$. When $N=2n$ is even and $K$ is a maximal compact subgroup at all places, we prove Weyl's Law for the number of self-dual representations, i…
We define spherical diffraction measures for a wide class of weighted point sets in commutative spaces, i.e. proper homogeneous spaces associated with Gelfand pairs. In the case of the hyperbolic plane we can interpret the spherical diffraction measure as the Mellin transform of the auto-correlation distribution. We show that uniform regular model sets in commutative spaces have a pure point spherical diffraction measure. The atoms of this measure are located at the spherical automorphic spectrum of the underlying lattice, and the diffraction coefficients can be characterized abstractly in ter…
By the unfolding method, Rankin-Selberg L-functions for ${\rm GL}(n)\times{\rm GL}(m)$ can be expressed in terms of period integrals. These period integrals actually define invariant forms on tensor products of the relevant automorphic representations. By the multiplicity-one theorems due to Sun-Zhu and Chen-Sun such invariant forms are unique up to scalar multiples and can therefore be related to invariant forms on equivalent principal series representations. We construct meromorphic families of such invariant forms for spherical principal series representations of ${\rm GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ an…
We revisit with another view point the construction by R. Brylinski and B. Kostant of minimal representations of simple Lie groups. We start from a pair $(V,Q)$, where $V$ is a complex vector space and $Q$ a homogeneous polynomial of degree 4 on $V$. The manifold $Ξ$ is an orbit of a covering of ${\rm Conf}(V,Q)$, the conformal group of the pair $(V,Q)$, in a finite dimensional representation space. By a generalized Kantor-Koecher-Tits construction we obtain a complex simple Lie algebra $\goth g$, and furthermore a real form ${\goth g}_{\bboard R}$. The connected and simply connected Lie group…
For an automorphic representation $π$ of Ramanujan type, there is a conjectural subgroup $\mathcal{H}_π$ of the Langlands L-group $^{L}G$ associated to $π$, called the {\it functional source} of $π$. The functorial source problem proposed by Langlands and refined by Arthur intends to determine $\mathcal{H}_π$ via analytic and arithmetic data of $π$. In this paper, we consider the functorial source problem of automorphic representations of a split group, a unitary group, or an orthogonal group which do not come from endoscopy and have minimal possible ramification. In this setting, $\mathcal{H}…
In the first part of the paper we give some bounds for domains where the unitarizabile subquotients can show up in the parabolically induced representations of classical p-adic groups. Roughly, it can show up only if the central character of the inducing irreducible cuspidal representation is dominated in an appropriate way by the square root of the modular character of minimal parabolic subgroup. For representations supported by fixed parabolic subgroup, a more precise bound is given. There are also bounds for specific Bernstein components. A number of these upper bounds are best possible. Th…
According to Sakellaridis, many zeta integrals in the theory of automorphic forms can be produced or explained by appropriate choices of a Schwartz space of test functions on a spherical homogeneous space, which are in turn dictated by the geometry of affine spherical embeddings. We pursue this perspective by developing a local counterpart and try to explicate the functional equations. These constructions are also related to the $L^2$-spectral decomposition of spherical homogeneous spaces in view of the Gelfand-Kostyuchenko method. To justify this viewpoint, we prove the convergence of $p$-adi…
Suppose that $G$ is a simple reductive group over $\mathbf{Q}$, with an exceptional Dynkin type, and with $G(\mathbf{R})$ quaternionic (in the sense of Gross-Wallach). In a previous paper, we gave an explicit form of the Fourier expansion of modular forms on $G$ along the unipotent radical of the Heisenberg parabolic. In this paper, we give the Fourier expansion of the minimal modular form $θ_{Gan}$ on quaternionic $E_8$, and some applications. The $Sym^{8}(V_2)$-valued automorphic function $θ_{Gan}$ is a weight four, level one modular form on $E_8$, which has been studied by Gan. The applicat…
Let Z be a homogeneous space Z=G/H of a real reductive Lie group G with a reductive subgroup H. The investigation concerns the quantitative decay of matrix coefficients on $Z$ under the assumption that Z is of spherical type, that is, minimal parabolic subgroups have open orbits on Z.
In this work we study the relationship between several combinatorial formulas for type $A$ spherical Whittaker functions. These are spherical functions on $p$-adic groups, which arise in the theory of automorphic forms. They depend on a parameter $t$, and are a specialization of Macdonald polynomials, and further specialize to Schur polynomials upon setting $t=0$. There are three types of formulas for these polynomials. The first formula is in terms of so-called alcove walks, works in arbitrary Lie type, and is derived from the Ram-Yip formula for Macdonald polynomials. The second one is in te…
Let $D$ be an indefinite quaternion division algebra over $\mathbb{Q}$. We approach the problem of bounding the sup-norms of automorphic forms $ϕ$ on $D^\times(\mathbb{A})$ that belong to irreducible automorphic representations and transform via characters of unit groups of orders of $D$. We obtain a non-trivial upper bound for $\|ϕ\|_\infty$ in the level aspect that is valid for arbitrary orders. This generalizes and strengthens previously known upper bounds for $\|ϕ\|_\infty$ in the setting of newforms for Eichler orders. In the special case when the index of the order in a maximal order is …
This paper concerns some novel features of maximal parabolic Eisenstein series at certain special values of their analytic parameter s. These series arise as coefficients in the R4 and D4R4 interactions in the low energy expansion of scattering amplitudes in maximally supersymmetric string theory reduced to D=10-d dimensions on a torus T^d, d<8. For each d these amplitudes are automorphic functions on the rank d+1 symmetry group E_d+1. Of particular significance is the orbit content of the Fourier modes of these series when expanded in three different parabolic subgroups, corresponding to cert…

We study the exceptional theta correspondence for real groups obtained by restricting the minimal representation of the split exceptional group of the type E_n, to a split dual pair where one member is the exceptional group of the type G_2. We prove that the correspondence gives a bijection between spherical representations if n=6,7, and a slightly weaker statement if n=8.
Motivated by string theory scattering amplitudes that are invariant under a discrete U-duality, we study Fourier coefficients of Eisenstein series on Kac-Moody groups. In particular, we analyse the Eisenstein series on $E_9(R)$, $E_{10}(R)$ and $E_{11}(R)$ corresponding to certain degenerate principal series at the values s=3/2 and s=5/2 that were studied in 1204.3043. We show that these Eisenstein series have very simple Fourier coefficients as expected for their role as supersymmetric contributions to the higher derivative couplings $R^4$ and $\partial^{4} R^4$ coming from 1/2-BPS and 1/4-BP…
