We prove a generalization of the Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem for the open annulus showing that if a homeomorphism satisfies a certain twist condition and the nonwandering set is connected, then there is a fixed point. Our main focus is the study of bounded homeomorphisms of the open annulus. We prove a fixed point theorem for bounded homeomorphisms and study the special case of those homeomorphisms possessing at most one fixed point. Lastly we use the existence of rational rotation numbers to prove the existence of periodic orbits.
Let H be a homeomorphism of the open annulus isotopic to the identity which admits a lift h to the plane without fixed point. We show that h admits a Brouwer line which is a lift of a properly imbedded line joining one end to the other in the annulus or H admits a free essential simple closed curve.
For any irrational number $α$, there exists an ergodic area preserving homeomorphism of the closed annulus which is isotopic to the identitity, admits no compact invariant set contained in the interior of the annulus, and has the rotation number $α$.
Let $f$ be a homeomorphism of the closed annulus $A$ that preserves orientation, boundary components and that has a lift $\tilde f$ to the infinite strip $\tilde A$ which is transitive. We show that, if the rotation number of both boundary components of $A$ is strictly positive, then there exists a closed nonempty connected set $Γ\subset\tilde A$ such that $Γ\subset]-\infty,0]\times[0,1]$, $Γ$ is unlimited, the projection of $Γ$ to $A$ is dense, $Γ-(1,0)\subsetΓ$ and $\tilde{f}(Γ)\subset Γ.$ Also, if $p_1$ is the projection in the first coordinate in $\tilde A$, then there exists $d>0$ such th…
In this article we consider homeomorphisms of the open annulus $\mathbb{A}=\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{R}$ which are isotopic to the identity and preserve a Borel probability measure of full support, focusing on the existence of non-contractible periodic orbits. Assume $f$ such homeomorphism such that the connected components of the set of fixed points of $f$ are all compact. Further assume that there exists $\check{f}$ a lift of $f$ to the universal covering of $\mathbb{A}$ such that the set of fixed points of $\check{f}$ is non-empty and that this set projects into an open topologica…
This paper studies homeomorphisms of the closed annulus that are isotopic to the identity from the viewpoint of rotation theory, using a newly developed forcing theory for surface homeomorphisms. Our first result is a solution to the so called strong form of Boyland's Conjecture on the closed annulus: Assume $f$ is a homeomorphism of $\overline{\mathbb{A}}:=(\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z})\times [0,1]$ which is isotopic to the identity and preserves a Borel probability measure $μ$ with full support. We prove that if the rotation set of $f$ is a non-trivial segment, then the rotation number of the measu…
In this article, we give a growth rate about the number of periodic orbits in the Franks type theorem obtained by the authors \cite{LWY}. As applications, we prove the following two results: there exist infinitely many distinct non-contractible closed geodesics on $\mathbb{R}P^2$ endowed with a Riemannian metric such that its Gaussian curvature is positive, moreover, the number of non-contractible closed geodesics of length $\leq l$ grows at least like $l^2$; and there exist either two or infinitely many distinct non-contractible closed geodesics on Finsler $\mathbb{R}P^2$ with reversibility $…
Consider a homeomorphism h of the closed annulus S^1*[0,1], isotopic to the identity, such that the rotation set of h is reduced to a single irrational number alpha (we say that h is an irrational pseudo-rotation). For every positive integer n, we prove that there exists a simple arc gamma joining one of the boundary component of the annulus to the other one, such that gamma is disjoint from its n first iterates under h. As a corollary, we obtain that the rigid rotation of angle alpha can be approximated by homeomorphisms conjugate to h. The first result stated above is an analog of a theorem …
Let $h$ be a without fixed point lift to the plane of a homeomorphism of the open annulus isotopic to the identity and without wandering point. We show that $h$ admits a $h$-invariant dense open set $O$ on which it is conjugate to a translation and we study the action of $h$ on the compactly connected components of the closed and without interior set ${\bf R}^2 \setminus O$.
We prove that if an area-preserving homeomorphism of the torus in the homotopy class of the identity has a rotation set which is a nondegenerate vertical segment containing the origin, then there exists an essential invariant annulus. In particular, some lift to the universal covering has uniformly bounded displacement in the horizontal direction.
In this paper, we study pseudo-rotations of the open annulus, \emph{i.e.} conservative homeomorphisms of the open annulus whose rotation set is reduced to a single irrational number (the angle of the pseudo-rotation). We prove in particular that, for every pseudo-rotation $h$ of angle $ρ$, the rigid rotation of angle $ρ$ is in the closure of the conjugacy class of $h$. We also prove that pseudo-rotations are not persistent in $C^r$ topology for any $r\geq 0$.
The main result of this paper gives a topological property satisfied by any homeomorphism of the annulus $\mathbb{A}=\mathbb{S}^1 \times [-1,1]$ isotopic to the identity and with at most one fixed point. This generalizes the classical Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem because this property certainly does not hold for an area preserving homeomorphism of $\mathbb{A}$ with the usual boundary twist condition. We also have two corollaries of this result. The first one shows in particular that the boundary twist assumption may be weakened by demanding that the homeomorphism $h$ has a lift $H$ to the strip $…
A conservative irrational pseudo-rotation of the two-torus is semi-conjugate to the irrational rotation if and only if it has the property of bounded mean motion [10]. (Here 'irrational pseudo-rotation' means a toral homeomorphism with uniquely defined, totally irrational rotation vector.) The aim of this note is to explore this concept some further. For instance, we provide an example which shows that the preceding statement does not hold in the non-conservative case. Further, we collect a number of observations concerning the case where the bounded mean motion property fails. In particular, …
For a twist map $f$ of the annulus preserving the Lebesgue measure, we give sufficient conditions to assure the existence of a set of positive measure of points with non-zero asymptotic torsion. In particular, we deduce that every bounded instability region for $f$ contains a set of positive measure of points with non-zero asymptotic torsion. Moreover, for an exact symplectic twist map $f$, we provide a simple, geometric proof of a result by Cheng and Sun (see [CS96]) which characterizes $\mathcal{C}^0$-integrability of $f$ by the absence of conjugate points.
We prove that, if $f$ is a homeomorphism of the two torus isotopic to the identity whose rotation set is a non-degenerate segment and $f$ has a periodic point, then it has uniformly bounded deviations in the direction perpendicular to the segment.
We study the interplay between the dynamics of area-preserving surface homeomorphisms homotopic to the identity and the topology of the surface. We define fully essential dynamics and generalize the results previously obtained on strictly toral dynamics to surfaces of higher genus. Non-fully essential dynamics are, in a way, reducible to surfaces of lower genus, while in the fully essential case the dynamics is decomposed into a disjoint union of periodic bounded disks and a complementary invariant externally transitive continuum $C$. When the Misiurewicz-Ziemian rotation set has non-empty int…
This article deals with nonwandering (e.g. area-preserving) homeomorphisms of the torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ which are homotopic to the identity and strictly toral, in the sense that they exhibit dynamical properties that are not present in homeomorphisms of the annulus or the plane. This includes all homeomorphisms which have a rotation set with nonempty interior. We define two types of points: inessential and essential. The set of inessential points $ine(f)$ is shown to be a disjoint union of periodic topological disks ("elliptic islands"), while the set of essential points $ess(f)$ is an essentia…
We prove that any minimal $2$-torus homeomorphism which is isotopic to the identity and whose rotation set is not just a point exhibits uniformly bounded rotational deviations on the perpendicular direction to the rotation set. As a consequence of this, we show that any such homeomorphism is topologically mixing and we prove Franks-Misiurewicz conjecture under the assumption of minimality.
This article deals with directional rotational deviations for non-wandering periodic point free homeomorphisms of the 2-torus which are homotopic to the identity. We prove that under mild assumptions, such a homeomorphism exhibits uniformly bounded rotational deviations in some direction if and only it leaves invariant a pseudo-foliation, a notion which is a slight generalization of classical one-dimensional foliations. To get these results, we introduce a novel object called $\tildeρ$-centralized skew-product and their associated stable sets at infinity.
Given an orientation-preserving and area-preserving homeomorphism $f$ of the sphere, we prove that every point which is in the common boundary of three pairwise disjoint invariant open topological disks must be a fixed point. As an application, if $K$ is an invariant Wada type continuum, then $f^n|_K$ is the identity for some $n>0$. Another application is an elementary proof of the fact that invariant disks for a nonwandering homeomorphisms homotopic to the identity in an arbitrary surface are homotopically bounded if the fixed point set is inessential. The main results in this article are sel…
We present a dichotomy for surface homeomorphisms in the isotopy class of the identity. We show that, in the absence of a degenerate fixed point set, either there exists a uniform bound on the diameter of orbits of non-wandering points for the lifted dynamics in the universal covering space, or the map has non-contractible periodic points. We then use this new tool to characterize the dynamics of area preserving homeomorphisms of the torus without non-contractible periodic points, showing that if the fixed point set is non-degenerate, then either the lifted dynamics is uniformly bounded, or th…
Let p be a saddle fixed point for an orientation-preserving surface diffeomorphism f admitting a homoclinic point q. Let V be an open 2-cell bounded by a simple loop formed by two arcs joining p to q lying respectively in the stable and unstable curves at p. It is shown that f|V has fixed point index 1 or 2 depending only on the geometry of V near p.
In this paper we consider torus homeomorphisms $f$ homotopic to Dehn twists. We prove that if the vertical rotation set of $f$ is reduced to zero, then there exists a compact connected essential "horizontal" set K, invariant under $f$. In other words, if we consider the lift $\hat{f}$ of $f$ to the cylinder, which has zero vertical rotation number, then all points have uniformly bounded motion under iterates of $\hat{f}$. Also, we give a simple explicit condition which, when satisfied, implies that the vertical rotation set contains an interval and thus also implies positive topological entrop…
An oscillator is called isochronous if all motions have a common period. When the system is forced by a time-dependent perturbation with the same period the phenomenon of resonance may appear. We give a sufficient condition on the perturbation in order that resonance occurs when the period annulus of the isochronous oscillator is bounded. In this context, resonance means that all solutions escape from the period annulus.
We show that a homeomorphism of a semi-locally connected compact metric space is equicontinuous if and only if the distance between the iterates of a given point and a given subcontinuum (not containing that point) is bounded away from zero. This is false for general compact metric spaces. Moreover, homeomorphisms for which the conclusion of this result holds satisfy that the set of automorphic points contains those points where the space is not semi-locally connected.
We showed that for any bounded neighborhood of a hyperbolic equilibrium point $x_0$, there is a transformation which is locally homeomorphism, such that the system is changed into a linear system in this neighborhood. If the eigenvalues of $Df(x_0)$ are all located in the left-half complex plane, then there is a homeomorphism on the whole region of attraction such that the nonlinear system on the region of attraction is changed into a linear system under such a coordinate change.
In this article, we give two refinements of Franks' theorem: For orientation and area preserving homeomorphisms of the closed or open annulus, the existence of $k$-periodic orbits ($(k,n_0)=1$) forces the existence of infinitely many periodic orbits with periods prime to $n_0$. Moreover, if $f$ is reversible, the periodic orbits above could be symmetric. Our improvements of Franks' theorem can be applied to Reeb dynamics and celestial mechanics, for example, we give some precise information about the symmetries of periodic orbits found in Hofer, Wysocki and Zehnder's dichotomy theorem when the…
Let G be a group acting on the plane by orientation-preserving homeomorphisms. We show that if for some k>0 there is a ball of radius r > k/\sqrt{3} such that each point x in the ball satisfies |gx -hx| < k for all g, h in G, and the action of G satisfies a nonwandering hypothesis, then the action has a global fixed point. In particular, any group of measure-preserving orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the plane with uniformly bounded orbits has a global fixed point. The constant k/\sqrt{3} is sharp. We also show that a group acting on the plane with orbits bounded as above is left orde…
A method via the KAM technique is introduced to study the existence of invariant tori and quasiperiodic solutions for impulsive Duffing-type equations with time period 1. Basing on several planar symplectic homeomorphisms and some estimates of impulsive perturbations under each symplectic homeomorphisms, we prove via the Moser's twist theorem the boundedness (Lagrange stability) and the existence of an invariant circle for the equation with area-preserving impulsive terms. And this invariant circle having any rotation number $ω>ω_0$ with some $ω_0>0$, so we obtain also that the solutions start…
Let $f$ and $g$ be two class $P$-homeomorphisms of the circle $S^{1}$ with break points singularities. Assume that the derivatives $\textrm{Df}$ and $\textrm{Dg}$ are absolutely continuous on every continuity interval of $\textrm{Df}$ and $\textrm{Dg}$ respectively. Denote by $C(f)$ the set of break points of $f$. For $c\in S^{1}$, denote by $π_{s, O_{f}(c)}(f)$ the product of $f-$ jumps in break points lying to the $f-$ orbit of $c$ and by $\textrm{SO}(f) = \{O_{f}(c):~c \in C(f)~\textrm{and}~π_{s, O_{f}(c)}(f)\neq 1\}$, called the set of singular $f$-orbits. The maps $f$ and $g$ are called b…
We define boundedness properties on the contractible fixed points set of the time-one map of an identity isotopy on a closed oriented surface with genus $g\geq1$. In symplectic geometry, a classical object is the notion of action function, defined on the set of contractible fixed points of the time-one map of a Hamiltonian isotopy. We give a dynamical interpretation of this function that permits us to generalize it in the case of a homeomorphism isotopic to identity that preserves a Borel finite measure of rotation vector zero, provided that a boundedness condition is satisfied. We give some p…
A filling curve $γ$ on a based surface $S$ determines a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism $P(γ)$ of $S$ via the process of "point-pushing along $γ$." We consider the relationship between the self-intersection number $i(γ)$ of $γ$ and the dilatation of $P(γ)$; our main result is that the dilatation is bounded between $(i(γ)+1)^{1/5}$ and $9^{i(γ)}$. We also bound the least dilatation of any pseudo-Anosov in the point-pushing subgroup of a closed surface and prove that this number tends to infinity with genus. Lastly, we investigate the minimal entropy of any pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism obtained by pu…
