Let $f=(f_1, f_2)$ be a regular sequence of affine curves in $\bC^2$. Under some reduction conditions achieved by composing with some polynomial automorphisms of $\bC^2$, we show that the intersection number of curves $(f_i)$ in $\bC^2$ equals to the coefficient of the leading term $x^{n-1}$ in $g_2$, where $n=°f_i$ $(i=1, 2)$ and $(g_1, g_2)$ is the unique solution of the equation $y{\mathcal J}(f)=g_1f_1+g_2f_2$ with $°g_i\leq n-1$. So the well-known Jacobian problem is reduced to solving the equation above. Furthermore, by using the result above, we show that the Jacobian problem can also be reduced to a special family of polynomial maps.
We study meromorphic jacobian pairs, i.e., pairs of polynomials in one variable, with coefficients meromorphic series in a second variable, whose jacobian relative to the two variables depends only on the second variable. We pose two meromorphic jacobian conjectures about such pairs, one of which is in terms of an invariant of the pair which we call the beta invariant. These conjectures are shown to imply the bivariate algebraic jacobian conjecture which predicts that two bivariate polynomials generate the polynomial ring if their jacobian is a nonzero constant. As another technique for studyi…
For any integer $d \geq 1$, we verify the Jacobian Conjecture for a $d$-linear map in two variables. We prove that almost all the coefficients of the formal inverse are in the ideal specified by the Jacobian condition. We find expressions for certain elements in terms of the generators of this ideal. To obtain these expressions, we generalize a bijective proof of the Cayley-Hamilton theorem in two ways.
In this paper, we study higher derivations of Jacobian type in positive characteristic. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for $(n-1)$-tuples of polynomials to be extendable in the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over an integral domain $R$ of positive characteristic. In particular, we give characterizations of variables and univariate polynomials by using the terms of higher derivations of Jacobian type in the polynomial ring in two variables over a field of positive characteristic.
Implementations of known reductions of the Strong Real Jacobian Conjecture (SRJC), to the case of an identity map plus cubic homogeneous or cubic linear terms, and to the case of gradient maps, are shown to preserve significant algebraic and geometric properties of the maps involved. That permits the separate formulation and reduction, though not so far the solution, of the SRJC for classes of nonsingular polynomial endomorphisms of real n-space that exclude the Pinchuk counterexamples to the SRJC, for instance those that induce rational function field extensions of a given fixed odd degree.
Let f be a nondegenerate power series in several variables. We describe a condition for a polynomial g which implies that the product of g by the kth power of f is not contained in the Jacobian ideal of f.
Let $Y_K\to X_K$ be a ramified cyclic covering of curves, where $K$ is a cyclotomic field. In this work we study the $p$-rank of the reduction $\rm{mod}\, p$ of a model of the jacobian of $Y_K$. In this way, we obtain counterparts of the Deuring polynomial, defined for elliptic curves, for genus greater than one. Moreover, we show that curves $Y_K$ give Hecke characters for cyclotomic fields. To carry out this study we use Jacobi sums and certain $L$-functions.
We use methods for computing Picard numbers of reductions of K3 surfaces in order to study the decomposability of Jacobians over number fields and the variance of Mordell-Weil ranks of families of Jacobians over different ground fields. For example, we give examples of surfaces whose Picard numbers jump in rank at all primes of good reduction using Mordell-Weil groups of Jacobians and show that the genus of curves over number fields whose Jacobians are isomorphic to a product of elliptic curves satisfying certain reduction conditions is bounded. The isomorphism result addresses the number fiel…
Recent developments of affine algebraic geometry, especially the theory of open algebraic surfaces, provide means to systematically explore geometric and topological properties of polynomials in two variables. Nevertheless, there is one unsurmountable problem remained even in the case of two variables, which has been unsolved since 1939, that is the Jacobian Conjecture. These are notes for author's lectures on the geometry and topology of polynomials and the Jacobian Conjecture delivered at the l'Université de Bordeaux I and at Osaka University in 2003.
We address questions posed by Lorenzini about relations between Jacobians, Tutte polynomials, and the Brill-Noether theory of finite graphs, as encoded in his two-variable zeta functions. In particular, we give examples showing that none of these invariants is determined by the other two.
The Jacobian Conjecture states that any locally invertible polynomial system in C^n is globally invertible with polynomial inverse. C. W. Bass et al. (1982) proved a reduction theorem stating that the conjecture is true for any degree of the polynomial system if it is true in degree three. This degree reduction is obtained with the price of increasing the dimension n. We prove here a theorem concerning partial elimination of variables, which implies a reduction of the generic case to the quadratic one. The price to pay is the introduction of a supplementary parameter 0<n'< n, parameter which r…
This survey examines separation of variables for algebraically integrable Hamiltonian systems whose tori are Jacobians of Riemann surfaces. For these cases there is a natural class of systems which admit separations in a nice geometric sense. This class includes many of the well-known cases.
Let S be a polynomial ring over a field of characteristic zero in finitely may variables. Let T be an unramified, finitely generated extension of S with $T^\times = k^\times$. Then T = S.
We present a generalization of the Jacobian Conjecture for m polynomials in n variables: f1,...,fm belonging to k[x1,...,xn], where k is a field of characteristic zero and m=1,...,n. We express the generalized Jacobian condition in terms of irreducible and square-free elements of the subalgebra k[f1,...,fm]. We also discuss obtained properties in a more general setting - for subrings of unique factorization domains.
Let $p$ be a real polynomial in two variables. We say that a polynomial $q$ is a real Jacobian mate of $p$ if the Jacobian determinant of the mapping $(p,q):\mathbb{R}^2\to\mathbb{R}^2$ is everywhere positive. We present a class of polynomials that do not have real Jacobian mates.

Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. When the Jacobian $({\partial f}/{\partial x})({\partial g}/{\partial y}) - ({\partial g}/{\partial x})({\partial f}/{\partial y})$ is a constant for $f,g\in K[x,y]$, Magnus' formula from [A. Magnus, Volume preserving transformations in several complex variables, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 5 (1954), 256--266] describes the relations between the homogeneous degree pieces $f_i$'s and $g_i$'s. We show a more general version of Magnus' formula and prove a special case of the two-dimensional Jacobian conjecture as its application.
The Jacobian conjecture in dimension $n$ asserts that any polynomial endomorphism of $n$-dimensional affine space over a field of zero characteristic, with the Jacobian equal 1, is invertible. The Dixmier conjecture in rank $n$ asserts that any endomorphism of the $n$-th Weyl algebra (the algebra of polynomial differential operators in $n$ variables) is invertible. We prove that the Jacobian conjecture in dimension $2n$ implies the Dixmier conjecture in rank $n$. Together with a well-known implication in the opposite direction, it shows that the stable Jacobian and Dixmier conjectures are equi…
In this paper we characterize, in two different ways, the Newton polygons which are jacobian Newton polygons of a branch. These characterizations give in particular combinatorial criteria of irreducibility for complex series in two variables and necessary conditions which a complex curve has to satisfy in order to be the discriminant of a complex plane branch.
Let K[x,y] be the algebra of two-variable polynomials over a field K. A polynomial p=p(x, y) is called a test polynomial (for automorphisms) if, whenever ϕ(p)=p for a mapping ϕof K[x,y], this ϕmust be an automorphism. Here we show that p \in C[x,y] is a test polynomial if and only if p does not belong to any proper retract of C[x,y]. This has the following corollary that may have application to the Jacobian conjecture: if a mapping ϕof C[x,y] with invertible Jacobian matrix is ``invertible on one particular polynomial", then it is an automorphism. More formally: if there is a non-constant poly…
A map $f$ from the quaternion skew field $H$ to itself, can also be thought as a transformation $f:R^4 \to R^4$. In this manuscript, the Jacobian $J(f)$ of $f$ is computed, in the case where $f$ is a quaternion polynomial. As a consequence, the Cauchy-Riemman equations for $f$ are derived. It is also shown that the Jacobian determinant of $f$ is non negative over $H$. The above commensurates well with the theory of analytic functions of one complex variable.
We study the Selmer variety associated to a canonical quotient of the $\Q_p$-pro-unipotent fundamental group of a smooth projective curve of genus at least two defined over $\Q$ whose Jacobian decomposes into a product of abelian varieties with complex multiplication. Elementary multi-variable Iwasawa theory is used to prove dimension bounds, which, in turn, lead to a new proof of Diophantine finiteness over $\Q$ for such curves.
Let $ K[x, y]$ be the polynomial algebra in two variables over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$. A subalgebra $R$ of $K[x, y]$ is called a retract if there is an idempotent homomorphism (a {\it retraction}, or {\it projection}) $φ: K[x, y] \to K[x, y]$ such that $φ(K[x, y]) = R$. The presence of other, equivalent, definitions of retracts provides several different methods of studying them, and brings together ideas from combinatorial algebra, homological algebra, and algebraic geometry. In this paper, we characterize all the retracts of $ K[x, y]$ up to an automorphism, and give several appli…
Given a curve defined over an algebraically closed field which is complete with respect to a nontrivial valuation, we study its tropical Jacobian. This is done by first tropicalizing the curve, and then computing the Jacobian of the resulting weighted metric graph. In general, it is not known how to find the abstract tropicalization of a curve defined by polynomial equations, since an embedded tropicalization may not be faithful, and there is no known algorithm for carrying out semistable reduction in practice. We solve this problem in the case of hyperelliptic curves by studying admissible co…
The Ekedahl-Oort type is a combinatorial invariant of a principally polarized abelian variety $A$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$. It characterizes the $p$-torsion group scheme of $A$ up to isomorphism. Equivalently, it characterizes (the mod $p$ reduction of) the Dieudonné module of $A$ or the de Rham cohomology of $A$ as modules under the Frobenius and Vershiebung operators. There are very few results about which Ekedahl-Oort types occur for Jacobians of curves. In this paper, we consider the class of Hermitian curves, indexed by a prime power $q=p^n$, wh…
Let C be a curve over a non-singular base variety S. We study algebraic cycles on the symmetric powers C^[n] and on the Jacobian J. The Chow homology of C^[*], the sum of all C^[n], is a ring using the Pontryagin product. We prove that this ring is isomorphic to CH(J)[t]<u>, the PD-polynomial algebra (variable: u) over the usual polynomial ring (variable: t) over the Chow ring CH(J). We give two such isomorphisms that over a general base are different. Further we give some precise results on how CH(J) sits embedded in CH(C^[*]) and we give an explicit geometric description of how the derivatio…
For a class of non-hyperelliptic genus 3 curves C which are 2-fold coverings of elliptic curves E, we give an explicit algebraic description of all birationally non-equivalent genus 2 curves whose Jacobians are degree 2 isogeneous to the Prym varieties associated to such coverings. Our description is based on previous studies of Prym varieties with polarization (1,2) in connection with separation of variables in a series of classical and new algebraic integrable systems linearized on such varieties. We also consider some special cases of the covering C -> E, in particular, when the correspondi…
We obtain two equivalent conditions for m polynomials in n variables to form a p-basis of a ring of constants of some polynomial K-derivation, where K is a UFD of characteristic p>0. One of these conditions involves jacobians, and the second - some properties of factors. In the case of m=n this extends the known theorem of Nousiainen, and we obtain a new formulation of the jacobian conjecture in positive characteristic.
A matrix polynomial is a polynomial in a complex variable $λ$ with coefficients in $n \times n$ complex matrices. The spectral curve of a matrix polynomial $P(λ)$ is the curve $\{ (λ, μ) \in \mathbb{C}^2 \mid \mathrm{det}(P(λ) - μ\cdot \mathrm{Id}) = 0\}$. The set of matrix polynomials with a given spectral curve $C$ is known to be closely related to the Jacobian of $C$, provided that $C$ is smooth. We extend this result to the case when $C$ is an arbitrary nodal, possibly reducible, curve. In the latter case the set of matrix polynomials with spectral curve $C$ turns out to be naturally strat…
Let $K$ be a local field of residue characteristic $p$. Let $C$ be a curve over $K$ whose minimal proper regular model has totally degenerate semi-stable reduction. Under certain hypotheses, we compute the prime-to-$p$ rational torsion subgroup on the Jacobian of $C$. We also determine divisibility of line bundles on $C$, including rationality of theta characteristics and higher spin structures. These computations utilize arithmetic on the special fiber of $C$.
Let $C$ be a smooth, absolutely irreducible genus-$3$ curve over a number field $M$. Suppose that the Jacobian of $C$ has complex multiplication by a sextic CM-field $K$. Suppose further that $K$ contains no imaginary quadratic subfield. We give a bound on the primes $\mathfrak{p}$ of $M$ such that the stable reduction of $C$ at $\mathfrak{p}$ contains three irreducible components of genus $1$.
The Krichever construction in one variable, that is, for spectral curves, linearizes the KdV-hierarchy on the jacobian of the curve. We carry out an appropriate generalization of the Krichever construction for an arbitrary projective variety $X$ and determine the corresponding nonlinear dynamics, which are then linearized on an extension of $Pic^0(X)$.
It is proved that the Jacobian of a k-endomorphism of k[x_1,...,x_n] over a field k of characteristic zero taking every tame coordinate to a coordinate, must be a nonzero constant in k. It is also proved that the Jacobian of an R-endomorphism of A:=R[x_1,...,x_n] (where R is a polynomial ring in finite number of variables over an infinite field k), taking every R-linear coordinate of A to an R-coordinate of A, is a nonzero constant in k.
In this paper we show that the image of any locally finite $k$-derivation of the polynomial algebra $k[x, y]$ in two variables over a field $k$ of characteristic zero is a Mathieu subspace. We also show that the two-dimensional Jacobian conjecture is equivalent to the statement that the image $Im D$ of every $k$-derivation $D$ of $k[x, y]$ such that $1\in Im D$ and $div D=0$ is a Mathieu subspace of $k[x, y]$.
We investigate deformations of Milnor algebras of smooth homogeneous polynomials, and prove in particular that any smooth degree $d$ homogeneous polynomial in $n+1$ variables that is not of Sebastiani-Thom type is determined by the degree $k$ homogeneous component of its Jacobian ideal for any $d-1\leq k\leq (n+1)(d-2)$. Our results generalize the previous result on the reconstruction of a homogeneous polynomial from its Jacobian ideal.
Let X be a curve over a number field K with genus g>=2, $\pp$ a prime of O_K over an unramified rational prime p>2r, J the Jacobian of X, r=rank J(K), and $\scrX$ a regular proper model of X at $\pp$. Suppose r<g. We prove that #X(K)<=#\scrX(F_{\pp})+2r, extending the refined version of the Chabauty-Coleman bound to the case of bad reduction. The new technical insight is to isolate variants of the classical rank of a divisor on a curve which are better suited for singular curves and which satisfy Clifford's theorem.
It has been proved several times in the literature that a polynomial map from $C^2$ to $C$ with irreducible rational fibers cannot be a component of a counterexample to the Jacobian Conjecture. This note points out that this result is empty: it is implicit in 1980 work of Miyanish and Sugie that such a polynomial is equivalent to $f(x,y)=x$ by a polynomial automorphism of $C^2$.
We give bounds on the primes of geometric bad reduction for curves of genus three of primitive CM type in terms of the CM orders. In the case of genus one, there are no primes of geometric bad reduction because CM elliptic curves are CM abelian varieties, which have potential good reduction everywhere. However, for genus at least two, the curve can have bad reduction at a prime although the Jacobian has good reduction. Goren and Lauter gave the first bound in the case of genus two. In the cases of hyperelliptic and Picard curves, our results imply bounds on primes appearing in the denominators…
This article deals with a quantitative aspect of Hilbert's seventeenth problem: producing a collection of real polynomials in two variables of degree 8 in one variable which are positive but are not a sum of three squares of rational fractions. As explained by Huisman and Mahe, a given monic squarefree positive polynomial in two variables x and y of degree in y divisible by 4 is a sum of three squares of rational fractions if and only if the jabobian variety of some hyperelliptic curve (associated to P) has an "antineutral" point. Using this criterium, we follow a method developped by Cassels,…
Resultants, Jacobians and residues are basic invariants of multivariate polynomial systems. We examine their interrelations in the context of toric geometry. The global residue in the torus, studied by Khovanskii, is the sum over local Grothendieck residues at the zeros of $n$ Laurent polynomials in $n$ variables. Cox introduced the related notion of the toric residue relative to $n+1$ divisors on an $n$-dimensional toric variety. We establish denominator formulas in terms of sparse resultants for both the toric residue and the global residue in the torus. A byproduct is a determinantal formul…
