Let $M=Σ_1\times Σ_2$ be the product of two compact Riemannian manifolds of dimension $n\geq 2 $ and two, respectively. Let $Σ$ be the graph of a smooth map $f:Σ_1\mapsto Σ_2$, then $Σ$ is an $n$-dimensional submanifold of $M$. Let ${\frak G}$ be the Grassmannian bundle over $M$ whose fiber at each point is the set of all $n$-dimensional subspaces of the tangent space of $M$. The Gauss map $γ:Σ\mapsto \frak{G} $ assigns to each point $x\in Σ$ the tangent space of $Σ$ at $x$. This article considers the mean curvature flow of $Σ$ in $M$. When
$Σ_1$ and $Σ_2$ are of the same non-negative curvature, we show a sub-bundle $\frak{S}$ of the Grassmannian bundle is preserved along the flow, i.e. if the Gauss map of the initial submanifold $Σ$ lies in $\frak{S}$, then the Gauss map of $Σ_t$ at any later time $t$ remains in $\frak{S}$. We also show that under this initial condition, the mean curvature flow remains a graph, exists for all time and converges to the graph of a constant map at infinity . As an application, we show that if $f$ is any map from $S^n$ to $S^2$ and if at each point, the restriction of $df$ to any two dimensional subspace is area decreasing, then $f$ is homotopic to a constant map.
In this paper we obtain two types of optimal inequalities consisting of the normalized scalar curvature and the generalized normalized $δ$-Casorati curvatures for real hypersurfaces of complex two-plane Grassmannians and complex hyperbolic two-plane Grassmannians. We also find the conditions on which the equalities hold.
Using the convex functions in Grassmannian manifolds we can carry out interior estimates for mean curvature flow of higher codimension. In this way some of the results of Ecker-Huisken can be generalized to higher codimension
We provide explicit examples which show that mean convexity (i.e. positivity of the mean curvature) and positivity of the scalar curvature are non-preserved curvature conditions for hypersurfaces of the Euclidean space evolving under either the volume- or the area preserving mean curvature flow. The relevance of our examples is that they disprove some statements of the previous literature, overshadow a widespread folklore conjecture about the behaviour of these flows and bring out the discouraging news that a traditional singularity analysis is not possible for constrained versions of the mean…
In this paper, we firstly establish an Interpolating curvature invariance between the well known nonnegative and 2-non-negative curvature invariant along the Ricci flow. Then a related strong maximum principle for the $(λ_1, λ_2)$-nonnegativity is also derived along Ricci flow. Based on these, finally we obtain a rigidity property of manifolds with $(λ_1,λ_2)$-nonnegative curvature operators.
We generalize here our general procedure for constructing constant curvature maps of 2-spheres into Grassmannian manifolds G(m,n) this time concentrating our attention on maps which are non-holomorphic. We present some expressions describing these solutions in the general case and discuss how to use these results to construct solutions of constant curvature. We also discuss possible values of this constant curvature.
A pseudo-Riemannian manifold is said to be spacelike Jordan IP if the Jordan normal form of the skew-symmetric curvature operator depends upon the point of the manifold, but not upon the particular spacelike 2-plane in the tangent bundle at that point. We use methods of algebraic topology to classify connected spacelike Jordan IP pseudo-Riemannian manifolds of signature $(p,q)$, where $q\ge 11$, $p\le \frac{q-6}{4}$ and where the set $\{q, . . ., q+p\}$ does not contain a power of 2.
We investigate the geometric characteristics of constant gaussian curvature surfaces obtained from solutions of the $G(m,n)$ sigma model. Most of these solutions are related to the Veronese sequence. We show that we can distinguish surfaces with the same gaussian curvature using additional quantities like the topological charge and the mean curvature. The cases of $G(1,n)=\mathbb{C}P^{n-1}$ and $G(2,n)$ are used to illustrate these characteristics.
Let C be a cone in the space of algebraic curvature tensors. Moreover, let (M,g) be a compact Einstein manifold with the property that the curvature tensor of (M,g) lies in the cone C at each point on M. We show that (M,g) has constant sectional curvature if the cone C satisfies certain structure conditions.
It was proved by H. Chen earlier that the property of the sum of any two eigenvalues of the curvature operator is positive is preserved under the ricci flow in all dimensional. By a recent result of Phong-Sturm, a similar notion of positive 2-traceless bisectional curvature positive is preserved on complex surface. We prove that this holds in all dimensional Kähler manifold. Moreover, the scalar curvature controls full curvature for this type of metrics.
We derive estimates of the Hessian of two smooth functions defined on Grassmannian manifold. Based on it, we can derive curvature estimates for minimal submanifolds in Euclidean space via Gauss map. In this way, the result for Bernstein type theorem done by Jost and the first author could be improved.
We construct and investigate smooth orientable surfaces in su(N) algebras. The structural equations of surfaces associated with Grassmannian sigma models on Minkowski space are studied using moving frames adapted to the surfaces. The first and second fundamental forms of these surfaces as well as the relations between them as expressed in the Gauss-Weingarten and Gauss-Codazzi-Ricci equations are found. The scalar curvature and the mean curvature vector expressed in terms of a solution of Grassmanian sigma model are obtained.
A Riemannian manifold is said to be almost positively curved if the sets of points for which all $2$-planes have positive sectional curvature is open and dense. We show that the Grassmannian of oriented $2$-planes in $\mathbb{R}^7$ admits a metric of almost positive curvature, giving the first example of an almost positively curved metric on an irreducible compact symmetric space of rank greater than $1$. The construction and verification rely on the Lie group $\mathbf{G}_2$ and the octonions, so do not obviously generalize to any other Grassmannians.
It is proved the non-existence of Hopf hypersurfaces in $G_{2}({\Bbb C}^{m+2})$, $m \geq 3$, whose normal Jacobi operator is semi-parallel, if the principal curvature of the Reeb vector field is non-vanishing and the component of the Reeb vector field in the maximal quaternionic subbundle ${\frak D}$ or its orthogonal complement ${\frak D}^{\bot}$ is invariant by the shape operator.
In this paper, we introduce a flow over the projective bundle $p:P(E^*)\to M$, which is a natural generalization of both Hermitian-Yang-Mills flow and Kähler-Ricci flow. We prove that the semipositivity of curvature of the hyperplane line bundle $\mathcal{O}_{P(E^*)}(1)$ is preserved along this flow under the null eigenvector assumption. As applications, we prove that the semipositivity is preserved along the this flow if the base manifold $M$ is a curve, which implies that the Griffiths semipositivity is preserved along the Hermitian-Yang-Mills flow over a curve. And we also reprove that the …
This survey reviews some facts about nonnegativity conditions on the curvature tensor of a Riemannian manifold which are preserved by the action of the Ricci flow. The text focuses on two main points. First we describe the known examples of preserved curvature con-ditions and how they have been used to derive geometric results, in particular sphere theorems. We then describe some recent results which give restrictions on general preserved conditions. The paper ends with some open questions on these matters. The Ricci flow is the following evolution equation:
The purpose of this paper is to prove that the Hermitian Curvature Flow (HCF) on an Hermitian manifold $(M,g,J)$ preserves many natural curvature positivity conditions. Following Wilking, for an $Ad\,{GL(T^{1,0}M)}$-invariant subset $S\subset End(T^{1,0}M)$ and a ncie function $F\colon End(T^{1,0}M)\to\mathbb R$ we construct a convex set of curvature operators $C(S,F)$, which is invariant under the HCF. Varying $S$ and $F$, we prove that the HCF preserves Griffiths positivity, Dual-Nakano positivity, positivity of holomorphic orthogonal bisectional curvature, lower bounds on the second scalar …
We show that flatness of the normal bundle is preserved under the mean curvature flow in the Euclidean space and use this to generalize a classical result for hypersurfaces due to Ecker-Huisken in the case of submanifolds with arbitrary codimension.
Narasihman and Ramanan proved that an arbitrary connection in a vector bundle over a base space B can be obtained as the pull-back (via a correctly chosen classifying map from B into the appropriate Grassmannian) of the universal connection in the universal bundle over the Grassmannian. The purpose of this paper is to relate geometric properties of the classifying map to geometric properties of the pulled-back connection. More specifically, we describe conditions on the classifying map under which the pulled-back connection: (1) is fat (in the sphere bundle), (2) has a parallel curvature tenso…
Let (M,g_0) be a compact Riemannian manifold with pointwise 1/4-pinched sectional curvatures. We show that the Ricci flow deforms g_0 to a constant curvature metric. The proof uses the fact, also established in this paper, that positive isotropic curvature is preserved by the Ricci flow in all dimensions. We also rely on earlier work of Hamilton and of Bohm and Wilking.
The skew mean curvature flow (SMCF) is a natural generalization of the famous vortex filament equation. In this note, we show that the Gauss map of the SMCF satisfies a Schrödinger flow equation. In this regard, we explore the geometry of the oriented Grassmannian manifold explicitly by embedding it into the exterior product space.
In this paper, we study any Kähler manifold where the positive orthogonal bisectional curvature is preserved on the Kähler Ricci flow. Naturally, we always assume that the first Chern class $C_1$ is positive. In particular, we prove that any irreducible Kähler manifold with such property must be biholomorphic to $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^n. $ This can be viewed as a generalization of Siu-Yau\cite{Siuy80}, Morri's solution \cite{Mori79} of the Frankel conjecture. According to [8], note that any Kähler manifold with 2-positive traceless bisectional curvature operator is preserved under Kahler Ricci …
In this paper we first introduce the full expression of the curvature tensor of a real hypersurface $M$ in complex hyperbolic two-plane Grassmannians $SU_{2,m}/S(U_2{\cdot}U_m)$, $m{\ge}2$ from the equation of Gauss. Next we derive a new formula for the Ricci tensor of $M$ in $SU_{2,m}/S(U_2{\cdot}U_m)$. Finally we give a complete classification of Hopf hypersurfaces in complex hyperbolic two-plane Grassmannians $SU_{2,m}/S(U_2{\cdot}U_m)$ with commuting Ricci tensor. Each can be described as a tube over a totally geodesic $SU_{2,m-1}/S(U_2{\cdot}U_{m-1})$ in $SU_{2,m}/S(U_2{\cdot}U_m)$ or a h…
We study curvature pinching estimates of Ricci flow on complete 3- dimensional manifolds without bounded curvature assumption. We will derive some general curvature conditions which are preserved on any complete solution of 3-dim Ricci flow, these conditions include nonnegative Ricci curvature and sectional curvature as special cases. A local version of Hamilton-Ivey estimates is also obtained.
In this short note we show that non-negative Ricci curvature is not preserved under Ricci flow for closed manifolds of dimensions four and above, strengthening a previous result of Knopf in \cite{K} for complete non-compact manifolds of bounded curvature. This brings down to four dimensions a similar result Böhm and Wilking have for dimensions twelve and above, \cite{BW}. Moreover, the manifolds constructed here are \Kahler manifolds and relate to a question raised by Xiuxiong Chen in \cite{XC}, \cite{XCL}.
It is observed that for complex surfaces, the positivity of the Ricci curvature is preserved by the Kähler-Ricci flow, under the additional assumption that the sum of the two lowest eigenvalues of the traceless curvature operator is non-negative.
For a given manifold $M$ we consider the non-linear Grassmann manifold $Gr_n(M)$ of $n$-dimensional submanifolds in $M$. A closed $(n+2)$-form on $M$ gives rise to a closed 2-form on $Gr_n(M)$. If the original form was integral, the 2-form will be the curvature of a principal $S^1$-bundle over $Gr_n(M)$. Using this $S^1$-bundle one obtains central extensions for certain groups of diffeomorphisms of $M$. We can realize $Gr_{m-2}(M)$ as coadjoint orbits of the extended group of exact volume preserving diffeomorphisms and the symplectic Grassmannians $SGr_{2k}(M)$ as coadjoint orbits in the group…
Let M be a pseudo-Riemannian manifold with a pseudo-Hermitian complex structure $J$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions that the curvature operator $R(π)$ is complex linear when $π$ is a $J$ invariant real 2 plane. Under this assumption, we study when M is complex IP - i.e. the spectrum, or more generally the Jordan normal form, of $R(π)$ is constant on the Grassmannian of complex spacelike or timelike lines. Methods from algebraic topology are used to obtain restrictions on the spectrum of a complex IP algebraic curvature tensor.
We identify a region $\Bbb{W}_{\f{1}{3}}$ in a Grassmann manifold $\grs{n}{m}$, not covered by a usual matrix coordinate chart, with the following important property. For a complete $n-$submanifold in $\ir{n+m} \, (n\ge 3, m\ge2)$ with parallel mean curvature whose image under the Gauss map is contained in a compact subset $K\subset\Bbb{W}_{\f{1}{3}}\subset\grs{n}{m}$, we can construct strongly subharmonic functions and derive a priori estimates for the harmonic Gauss map. While we do not know yet how close our region is to being optimal in this respect, it is substantially larger than what co…
In this note, we show that on Hopf manifold $\mathbb S^{2n-1}\times \mathbb S^1$, the non-negativity of the holomorphic bisectional curvature is not preserved along the Chern-Ricci flow.
In this paper, we consider the stability of quermassintegral inequalities along a inverse curvature flow. We choose a special rescaling of the flow such that the $k$-th quermassintegral is decreasing and the $k-1$-th quermassintegral is preserved. Along this rescaled flow, we prove that the decreasing rate of the $k$-th quermassintegral is faster than the Fraenkel asymmetry of the domain when approaching to the sphere. This leads to the stability inequality of quermassintegral inequalities for nearly spherical sets using the flow method.
We consider the motion by mean curvature of an $n$-dimensional graph over a time-dependent domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, intersecting $\mathbb{R}^n$ at a constant angle. In the general case, we prove local existence for the corresponding quasilinear parabolic equation with a free boundary, and derive a continuation criterion based on the second fundamental form. If the initial graph is concave, we show this is preserved, and that the solution exists only for finite time. This corresponds to a symmetric version of triple junction motion of hypersurfaces by mean curvature, with constant angles at th…
In this paper, we mainly study the mean curvature flow in Kähler surfaces with positive holomorphic sectional curvatures. We prove that if the ratio of the maximum and the minimum of the holomorphic sectional curvatures is less than 2, then there exists a positive constant $δ$ depending on the ratio such that $\cosα\geqδ$ is preserved along the flow.
In their study of the representation theory of loop groups, Pressley and Segal introduced a determinant line bundle over an infinite dimensional Grassmann manifold. Mickelsson and Rajeev subsequently generalized the work of Pressley and Segal and in the process introduced for any p >=1 another infinite dimensional Grassmann manifold and a determinant line bundle defined over it. The construction of this determinant line bundle required the notion of a regularized determinant for bounded operators. In this note we specialize to the case p =2 and construct explicitly a connection on the correspo…
We calculate curvature tensors of metrics on the total spaces of holomorphic fibrations. Our main tool is a theory of Chern connections and curvature forms for possibly degenerate Hermitian forms on holomorphic vector bundles. We prove a version of the Codazzi-Griffiths equations for curvatures of sub- and quotient bundles in that setting and apply them to the study of honest Hermitian metrics on fibrations. We apply this to calculate the curvature of a metric on Grassmannian bundles and prove they have positive holomorphic sectional curvature if the base does.
In this paper, we investigate the volume-prserving mean curvature flow starting from a tube (of nonconstant radius) over a compact closed domain of a reflective submanifold in a symmetric space. We prove that the tubeness is preserved along the flow under certain conditions.
We demonstrate that the property of being Alexandrov immersed is preserved along mean curvature flow. Furthermore, we demonstrate that mean curvature flow techniques for mean convex embedded flows such as noncollapsing and gradient estimates also hold in this setting. We also indicate the necessary modifications to the work of Brendle--Huisken to allow for mean curvature flow with surgery for the Alexandrov immersed, $2$-dimensional setting.
Let $F:Σ^n \times [0,T)\to \R^{n+m}$ be a family of compact immersed submanifolds moving by their mean curvature vectors. We show the Gauss maps $γ:(Σ^n, g_t)\to G(n, m)$ form a harmonic heat flow with respect to the time-dependent induced metric $g_t$. This provides a more systematic approach to investigating higher codimension mean curvature flows. A direct consequence is any convex function on $G(n,m)$ produces a subsolution of the nonlinear heat equation on $(Σ, g_t)$. We also show the condition that the image of the Gauss map lies in a totally geodesic submanifold of $G(n, m)$ is preserve…
We prove convergence results for expanding curvature flows in the Euclidean and hyperbolic space. The flow speeds have the form $F^{-p}$, where $p>1$ and $F$ is a positive, strictly monotone and 1-homogeneous curvature function. In particular this class includes the mean curvature $F=H$. We prove that a certain initial pinching condition is preserved and the properly rescaled hypersurfaces converge smoothly to the unit sphere. We show that an example due to Andrews-McCoy-Zheng can be used to construct strictly convex initial hypersurfaces, for which the inverse mean curvature flow to the power…
In this short note, we show that the negative curvature is preserved in the deformation of hyperbolic warped product metrics under Ricci flow. It is also showed that the flow converges to a flat metric as time going to infinity.

We prove: "If $M$ is a compact hypersurface of the hyperbolic space, convex by horospheres and evolving by the volume preserving mean curvature flow, then it flows for all time, convexity by horospheres is preserved and the flow converges, exponentially, to a geodesic sphere". In addition, we show that the same conclusions about long time existence and convergence hold if $M$ is not convex by horospheres but it is close enough to a geodesic sphere.
This paper consists of two parts. First, motivated by classic results, we determine the subsets of a given nilpotent Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ (respectively, of the Grassmannian of two-planes of $\mathfrak{g}$) whose sign of Ricci (respectively, sectional) curvature remains unchanged for an arbitrary choice of a positive definite inner product on $\mathfrak{g}$. In the second part we study the subsets of $\mathfrak{g}$ which are, for some inner product, the eigenvectors of the Ricci operator with the maximal and with the minimal eigenvalue, respectively. We show that the closures of these sub…
We introduce Lagrangian mean curvature flow with boundary in Calabi--Yau manifolds by defining a natural mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary condition, and prove that under this flow, the Lagrangian condition is preserved. We also study in detail the flow of equivariant Lagrangian discs with boundary on the Lawlor neck and the self-shrinking Clifford torus, and demonstrate long-time existence and convergence of the flow in the first instance and of the rescaled flow in the second.
We derive a parabolic version of Omori-Yau maximum principle for a proper mean curvature flow when the ambient space has lower bound on $\ell$-sectional curvature. We apply this to show that the image of Gauss map is preserved under a proper mean curvature flow in euclidean spaces with uniform bounded second fundamental forms. This generalizes the result of Wang \cite{Wang} for compact immersions. We also prove a Omori-Yau maximum principle for properly immersed self-shrinkers, which improves a result in \cite{CJQ}.
For a submanifold with flat normal bundle in a space form there is a normal orthonormal basis that simultaneously diagonalizes the corresponding Weingarten operators, and at which these operators satisfy a simple Codazzi symmetry. When the second fundamental form has zero index of relative nullity, the image of the Gauss map as defined by Obata is a submanifold of a generalized Grassmannian manifold, with induced metric given by the third fundamental form, corresponding to the sum of the squares of these operators. In this case, we show that the Riemann curvature tensor of the Gauss image is c…
