We derive a parabolic version of Omori-Yau maximum principle for a proper mean curvature flow when the ambient space has lower bound on $\ell$-sectional curvature. We apply this to show that the image of Gauss map is preserved under a proper mean curvature flow in euclidean spaces with uniform bounded second fundamental forms. This generalizes the result of Wang \cite{Wang} for compact immersions. We also prove a Omori-Yau maximum principle for properly immersed self-shrinkers, which improves a result in \cite{CJQ}.
We prove that the hypotheses in the version of the Omori-Yau maximum principle that was given by Pigola-Rigoli-Setti are logically equivalent to the assumption that the manifold carries a $C^2$ proper function whose gradient and Hessian (Laplacian) are bounded. In particular, this result extends the scope of the original Omori-Yau principle, formulated in terms of lower bounds for curvature.
We introduce a version of the Omori-Yau maximum principle which generalizes the version obtained by Pigola-Rigoli-Setti 21. We apply our method to derive a non-trivial generalization Jorge-Koutrofiotis Theorem 15 for cylindrically bounded submanifolds due to Alias-Bessa-Montenegro 2, we extend results due to Alias-Dajczer 5, Alias-Bessa-Dajczer 1 and Alias-Impera-Rigoli 6.
A Riemannian manifold $M$ is said to satisfy the Omori-Yau maximum principle if for any $C^2$ bounded function $g:M\to \Bbb R$ there is a sequence $x_n\in M$, such that $\lim_{n\to \infty}g(x_n)=\sup_M g$, $ \lim_{n\to \infty}|\nabla g(x_n)|=0$ and $\limsup_{n\to \infty}Δg(x_n)\leq 0$. It is shown that if the Ricci curvature does not approach $-\infty $ too fast the manifold satisfies the Omori-Yau maximum principle. This improves earlier necessary conditions. The given condition is quite optimal.
We generalize the Omori-Yau almost maximum principle of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$ to a second-order linear semi-elliptic operator $L$ with bounded coefficients and no zeroth order term. Using this result, we prove some Liouville-type theorems for a real-valued $C^{2}$ function $f$ on $M$ satisfying $L f \geq F(f)+ H(|\nabla f|) $ for real-valued continuous functions $F$ and $H$ on $\Bbb R$ such that $H(0)=0$.
We generalize A. Borbély's condition for the conclusion of the Omori-Yau maximum principle for the Laplace operator on a complete Riemannian manifold to a second-order linear semi-elliptic operator $L$ with bounded coefficients and no zeroth order term. Also, we consider a new sufficient condition for the existence of a tamed exhaustion function. As a corollary, we show that the existence of a tamed exhaustion function is more general than the hypotheses in the version of the Omori-Yau maximum principle that was given by A. Ratto, M. Rigoli and A.G. Setti.
We derive, for the square operator of Yau, an analogue of the Omori-Yau maximum principle for the Laplacian. We then apply it to obtain nonexistence results concerning complete spacelike hypersurfaces with constant higher order mean curvature in the Steady State space.
We prove that the only complex parabolic geometries on Calabi-Yau manifolds are the homogeneous geometries on complex tori. We also classify the complex parabolic geometries on homogeneous compact Kähler manifolds.
We consider the natural generalization of the parabolic Monge-Ampère equation to HKT geometry. We prove that in the compact case the equation has always a short-time solution and when the hypercomplex manifold is locally flat and admits a hyperkähler metric, then the equation has a long-time solution whose normalization converges to a solution of the quaternionic Monge-Ampère equation introduced by Alesker and Verbitsky. The result gives an alternative proof of a theorem of Alesker.
Based on ideas of L. Alías, D. Impera and M. Rigoli developed in "Hypersurfaces of constant higher order mean curvature in warped products", we develope a fairly general weak/Omori-Yau maximum principle for trace operators. We apply this version of maximum principle to generalize several higher order mean curvature estimates and to give an extension of Alias-Impera-Rigoli Slice Theorem
In this paper, we establish a generalized maximum principle for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. As corollaries, Omori-Yau type maximum principles for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds are deduced. Moreover, we prove that the stochastic completeness for the heat semigroup generated by the sub-Laplacian is equivalent to the validity of a weak form of the generalized maximum principles. Finally, we give some applications of these generalized maximum principles.
In this paper we characterize compact and complete hypersurfaces with some constant higher order mean curvature into warped product spaces. Our approach is based on the use of a new trace operator version of the Omori-Yau maximum principle which seems to be interesting in its own.
In this paper we prove Hessian and Laplacian comparison theorems for the Lorentzian distance function in a spacetime with sectional (or Ricci) curvature bounded by a certain function by means of a comparison criterion for Riccati equations. Using these results, under suitable conditions, we are able to obtain some estimates on the higher order mean curvatures of spacelike hypersurfaces satisfying a Omori-Yau maximum principle for certain elliptic operators.
In this paper we study the behavior of the scalar curvature $S$ of a complete hypersurface immersed with constant mean curvature into a Riemannian space form of constant curvature, deriving a sharp estimate for the infimum of $S$. Our results will be an application of a weak Omori-Yau maximum principle due to Pigola, Rigoli and Setti \cite{PRS}.
The aim of this paper is to introduce new forms of the weak and Omori-Yau maximum principles for linear operators, notably for trace type operators, and show their usefulness, for instance, in the context of PDE's and in the theory of hypersurfaces. In the final part of the paper we consider a large class of non-linear operators and we show that our previous results can be appropriately generalized to this case.
This article is devoted to the study of several estimations for a positive solution to a nonlinear weighted parabolic equation on a weighted Riemannian manifold. We therefore derive new Li-Yau type and Hamilton type gradient estimates yielding several consequences. We also derive Hessian estimate and some corollaries for the same equation. Among the applications of our estimates discussed here are Harnack type inequalities, Liouville type theorems and a local time reversed Harnack inequality.
In this paper we analyze the problem of uniqueness for spacelike hypersurfaces with constant higher order mean curvature in generalized Robertson-Walker spacetimes. We consider first the case of compact spacelike hypersurfaces, completing some previous results given in [2]. We next extend these results to the complete noncompact case. In that case, our approach is based on the use of a generalized version of the Omori-Yau maximum principle for trace type differential operators, recently given in [3].
We establish a one-parameter family of Harnack inequalities connecting the constrained trace Li-Yau differential Harnack inequality for a nonlinear parabolic equation to the constrained trace Chow-Hamilton Harnack inequality for this nonlinear equation with respect to evolving metrics related to Ricci flow on a 2-dimensional closed manifold. This result can be regarded as a nonlinear version of the previous work of Y. Zheng and the author (Arch. Math. 94 (2010), 591-600).
In this work we consider viscosity solutions to second order partial differential equations on Riemannian manifolds. We prove maximum principles for solutions to Dirichlet problem on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary. Using a different method, we generalize maximum principles of Omori and Yau to a viscosity version.
Let $\mathbb Q^{n+1}_c$ be the complete simply-connected $(n+1)$-dimensional space form of curvature $c$. In this paper we obtain a new characterization of geodesic spheres in $\mathbb Q^{n+1}_c$ in terms of the higher order mean curvatures. In particular, we prove that the geodesic sphere is the only complete bounded immersed hypersurface in $\mathbb Q^{n+1}_c,\;c\leq 0,$ with constant mean curvature and constant scalar curvature. The proof relies on the well known Omori-Yau maximum principle, a formula of Walter for the Laplacian of the $r$-th mean curvature of a hypersurface in a space form…
Let $(M, g)$ be an dimensional complete Riemannian manifold. In this paper we prove local Li-Yau type gradient estimates for all positive solutions to the following nonlinear parabolic equation \begin{equation*} (\partial_t - Δ_g + \mathcal{R}) u(x, t) = - a u(x, t) \log u(x, t) \end{equation*} along the generalised geometric flow. Here $ \mathcal{R} = \mathcal{R} (x, t)$ is a smooth potential function and $a$ is a constant. As an application we derived a global estimate and a space-time Harnack inequality.
In this paper, by maximum principle and cutoff function, we investigate gradient estimates for positive solutions to two nonlinear parabolic equations under Ricci flow. The related Harnack inequalities are deduced. An result about positive solutions on closed manifolds under Ricci flow is abtained. As applications, gradient estimates and Harnack inequalities for positive solutions to the heat equation under Ricci flow are derived. These results in the paper can be regard as generalizing the gradient estimates of Li-Yau, J. Y. Li, Hamilton and Li-Xu to the Ricci flow. Our results also improve t…
We study properly immersed ancient solutions of the codimension one mean curvature flow in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space, and classify the convex hulls of the subsets of space reached by any such flow. In particular, it follows that any compact convex ancient mean curvature flow can only have a slab, a halfspace or all of space as the closure of its set of reach. The proof proceeds via a bi-halfspace theorem (also known as a wedge theorem) for ancient solutions derived from a parabolic Omori-Yau maximum principle for ancient mean curvature flows.
Operators on nonlinear metric measure spaces I: A New Laplacian comparison theorem on Finsler manifolds and a generalized Li-Yau approach to gradient estimates of Finslerian Schrödinger equation
Some analysis on the Lorentzian distance in a spacetime with controlled sectional (or Ricci) curvatures is done. In particular, we focus on the study of the restriction of such distance to a spacelike hypersurface satisfying the Omori-Yau maximum principle. As a consequence, and under appropriate hypotheses on the (sectional or Ricci) curvatures of the ambient spacetime, we obtain sharp estimates for the mean curvature of those hypersurfaces. Moreover, we also give a suficient condition for its hyperbolicity.
We prove a global Li-Yau inequality for a general Markov semigroup under a curvature-dimension condition. This inequality is stronger than all classical Li-Yau type inequalities known to us. On a Riemannian manifold, it is equivalent to a new parabolic Harnack inequality, both in negative and positive curvature, giving new subsequents bounds on the heat kernel of the semigroup. Under positive curvature we moreover reach ultracontractive bounds by a direct and robust method.
We prove that the parabolic flow of conformally balanced metrics introduced by Phong, Picard and Zhang in "A flow of conformally balanced metrics with Kähler fixed points", is stable around Calabi-Yau metrics. The result shows that the flow can converge on a Kähler manifold even if the initial metric is not conformally Kähler.
In recent years, the study of the interplay between (fully) non-linear potential theory and geometry received important new impulse. The purpose of this work is to move a step further in this direction by investigating appropriate versions of parabolicity and maximum principles at infinity for large classes of non-linear (sub)equations $F$ on manifolds. The main goal is to show a unifying duality between such properties and the existence of suitable $F$-subharmonic exhaustions, called Khas'minskii potentials, which is new even for most of the "standard" operators arising from geometry, and imp…
We give sharp $C^{2,α}$ estimates for solutions of some fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations in complex geometry and almost complex geometry, assuming a bound on the Laplacian of the solution. We also prove the analogous results to complex Monge-Ampère equations with conical singularities. As an application, we obtain a local estimate for Calabi-Yau equation in almost complex geometry. We also improve the $C^{2,α}$ regularities and estimates for viscosity solutions to some uniformly elliptic and parabolic equations. All our results are optimal regarding the Hölder exponent.
In this paper, we study the line bundle mean curvature flow defined by Jacob and Yau. The line bundle mean curvature flow is a kind of parabolic flows to obtain deformed Hermitian Yang-Mills metrics on a given Kähler manifold. The goal of this paper is to give an $\varepsilon$-regularity theorem for the line bundle mean curvature flow. To establish the theorem, we provide a scale invariant monotone quantity. As a critical point of this quantity, we define self-shrinker solution of the line bundle mean curvature flow. The Liouville type theorem for self-shrinkers is also given. It plays an impo…
The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, the study of gradient Schrödinger operators on manifolds with density $ϕ$. We classify the space of solutions when the underlying manifold is $ϕ-$parabolic. As an application, we extend the Naber-Yau Liouville Theorem, and we will prove that a complete manifold with density is $ϕ-$parabolic if, and only if, it has finite $ϕ-$capacity. Moreover, we show that the linear space given by the kernel of a nonnegative gradient Schrödinger operators is one dimensional provided there exists a bounded function on it and the underlying manifold is $ϕ-$par…
This paper is about the influence of Geometry on the qualitative behaviour of solutions of quasilinear PDEs on Riemannian manifolds. Motivated by examples arising, among others, from the theory of submanifolds, in particular by the study of entire graphs with prescribed mean curvature, we consider classes of coercive differential inequalities of the form $$ \mathrm{div}\left( \frac{φ(|\nabla u|)}{|\nabla u|} \nabla u\right) \ge b(x)f(u) l(|\nabla u|) \qquad \text{(respectively, $\le$ or $=$)} $$ on domains of a manifold $M$, for suitable $φ,b,f,l$, with emphasis on mean curvature type operator…
In [SW2], we defined a generalized mean curvature vector field on any almost Lagrangian submanifold with respect to a torsion connection on an almost Kähler manifold. The short time existence of the corresponding parabolic flow was established. In addition, it was shown that the flow preserves the Lagrangian condition as long as the connection satisfies an Einstein condition. In this article, we show that the canonical connection on the cotangent bundle of any Riemannian manifold is an Einstein connection (in fact, Ricci flat). The generalized mean curvature vector on any Lagrangian submanifol…
In the first part of this paper, we prove local interior and boundary gradient estimates for p-harmonic functions on general Riemannian manifolds. With these estimates, following the strategy in recent work of R. Moser, we prove an existence theorem for weak solutions to the level set formulation of the 1/H (inverse mean curvature) flow for hypersurfaces in ambient manifolds satisfying a sharp volume growth assumption. In the second part of this paper, we consider two parabolic analogues of the p-Laplace equation and prove sharp Li-Yau type gradient estimates for positive solutions to these eq…
