We review some recent results on asymptotic properties of polynomials of large degree, of general holomorphic sections of high powers of positive line bundles over Kahler manifolds, and of Laplace eigenfunctions of large eigenvalue on compact Riemannian manifolds. We describe statistical patterns in the zeros, critical points and L^p norms of random polynomials and holomorphic sections, and the influence of the Newton polytope on these patterns. For eigenfunctions, we discuss L^p norms and mass concentration of individual eigenfunctions and their relation to dynamics of the geodesic flow.
In this paper we are concerned with a new class of BVP' s consisting of eigendependent boundary conditions and two supplementary transmission conditions at one interior point. By modifying some techniques of classical Sturm-Liouville theory and suggesting own approaches we find asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunction.

The aim of this study is to find asymptotic expressions of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a discontinuous boundary-value problem with retarded argument which contains a spectral parameter in the boundary condition. Applications of differential equations with retarded argument can be encountered in the theory of selfoscillatory systems, in the study of problems connected with combustion in rocket engines, in a number of problems in economics, biophysics, and many other fields. The problems in these areas can be solved reducing differential equations with retarded argument. In this study disc…
The aim of this paper is to bring into the picture a new phenomenon in the theory of orthogonal matrix polynomials satisfying second order differential equations. The last few years have witnessed some examples of a (fixed) family of orthogonal matrix polynomials whose elements are common eigenfunctions of several linearly independent second order differential operators. We show that the dual situation is also possible: there are examples of different families of matrix polynomials, each family orthogonal with respect to a different weight matrix, whose elements are eigenfunctions of a common …
In this work a discontinuous boundary-value problem with retarded argument which contains spectral parameter in the transmission conditions at the point of discontinuity are investigated. We obtained asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions.
Let $S$ be a Damek-Ricci space equipped with the Laplace-Beltrami operator $Δ$. In this paper we characterize all eigenfunctions of $Δ$ through sphere, ball and shell averages as the radius (of sphere, ball or shell) tends to infinity.
For a long time it has been a challenging goal to identify all orthogonal polynomial systems that occur as eigenfunctions of a linear differential equation. One of the widest classes of such eigenfunctions known so far, is given by Koornwinder's generalized Jacobi polynomials with four parameters $α,β\in\mathbb{N}_{0}$ and $M,N \ge 0$ determining the orthogonality measure on the interval $-1 \le x \le 1$. The corresponding differential equation of order $2α+2β+6$ is presented here as a linear combination of four elementary components which make the corresponding differential operator widely ac…
In this paper, we deal with a q-Dirac system. We investigate some spectral properties and the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions of this q-Dirac system.
We construct a non-polynomial generalization of the $q$-Askey scheme. Whereas the elements of the $q$-Askey scheme are given by $q$-hypergeometric series, the elements of the non-polynomial scheme are given by contour integrals, whose integrands are built from Ruijsenaars' hyperbolic gamma function. Alternatively, the integrands can be expressed in terms of Faddeev's quantum dilogarithm, Woronowicz's quantum exponential, or Kurokawa's double sine function. We present the basic properties of all the elements of the scheme, including their integral representations, joint eigenfunction properties…
We review a recent construction of an explicit analytic series representation for symmetric polynomials which up to a groundstate factor are eigenfunctions of Calogero-Sutherland type models. We also indicate a generalisation of this result to polynomials which give the eigenfunctions of so-called 'deformed' Calogero-Sutherland type models.
A classical result due to Bochner classifies the orthogonal polynomials on the real line which are common eigenfunctions of a second order linear differential operator. We settle a natural version of the Bochner problem on the unit circle which answers a similar question concerning orthogonal Laurent polynomials and can be formulated as a bispectral problem involving CMV matrices. We solve this CMV bispectral problem in great generality proving that, except the Lebesgue measure, no other one on the unit circle yields a sequence of orthogonal Laurent polynomials which are eigenfunctions of a li…
In this paper, by using the similar methods of [O. Sh. Mukhtarov and M. Kadakal, Some spectral properties of one Sturm-Liouville type problem with discontinuous weight, Siberian Mathematical Journal, 46 (2005) 681-694] we extend some spectral properties of regular Sturm-Liouville problems to those which consist of a Sturm-Liouville equation with discontinuous weight at two interior points together with spectral parameter-dependent boundary conditions. We give an operator-theoretic formulation for the considered problem and obtain asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions.
We provide the mathematical foundation for the $X_m$-Jacobi spectral theory. Namely, we present a self-adjoint operator associated to the differential expression with the exceptional $X_m$-Jacobi orthogonal polynomials as eigenfunctions. This proves that those polynomials are indeed eigenfunctions of the self-adjoint operator (rather than just formal eigenfunctions). Further, we prove the completeness of the exceptional $X_m$-Jacobi orthogonal polynomials (of degrees $m, m+1, m+2, ...$) in the Lebesgue--Hilbert space with the appropriate weight. In particular, the self-adjoint operator has no …
The Jacobi polynomials on the simplex are orthogonal polynomials with respect to the weight function $W_\bg(x) = x_1^{\g_1} ... x_d^{\g_d} (1- |x|)^{\g_{d+1}}$ when all $\g_i > -1$ and they are eigenfunctions of a second order partial differential operator $L_\bg$. The singular cases that some, or all, $\g_1,...,\g_{d+1}$ are -1 are studied in this paper. Firstly a complete basis of polynomials that are eigenfunctions of $L_\bg$ in each singular case is found. Secondly, these polynomials are shown to be orthogonal with respect to an inner product which is explicitly determined. This inner prod…
Uniform convergence of the expansion of an absolutely continuous function for eigenfunctions of the Sturm-Liouville problem $-y" + q \left( x \right) y = μy,$ $y \left(0\right)=0,$ $y\left( π\right)\cos β+ y'\left( π\right)\sin β= 0,$ $β\in \left( 0, π\right)$ with summable potential $q \in L_{\mathbb{R}}^1 \left[0, π\right]$ is proved. This result is used to obtain more precise asymptotic formulae for eigenvalues and norming constants of this problem.
Classical orthogonal polynomial systems of Jacobi, Hermite and Laguerre have the property that the polynomials of each system are eigenfunctions of a second order ordinary differential operator. According to a famous theorem by Bochner they are the only systems on the real line with this property. Similar results hold for the discrete orthogonal polynomials. In a recent paper we introduced a natural class of polynomial systems whose members are the eigenfunctions of a differential operator of higher order and which are orthogonal with respect to d measures, rather than one. These polynomial sy…
We investigate a type of Hermite orthogonal polynomials on $r$ lines in the plane which have a common point at the origin and endpoints at the $r$ roots of unity and we show that their related Hermite functions are eigenfunctions of a differential-difference operator. A supersymmetric harmonic oscillator on $r$ radial lines is presented and analyzed. Its eigenfunctions are given in terms of these polynomials.
Given a sequence of polynomials $(p_n)_n$, an algebra of operators $\mathcal{A}$ acting in the linear space of polynomials and an operator $D_p\in \mathcal{A}$ with $D_p(p_n)=np_n$, we form a new sequence of polynomials $(q_n)_n$ by considering a linear combination of $m$ consecutive $p_n$: $q_n=p_n+\sum_{j=1}^mβ_{n,j}p_{n-j}$. Using the concept of $\mathcal{D}$-operator, we determine the structure of the sequences $β_{n,j}, j=1,\ldots,m,$ in order that the polynomials $(q_n)_n$ are common eigenfunctions of an operator in the algebra $\mathcal{A}$. As an application, from the classical discret…
In this paper, we first give two uniform asymptotic approximations of the eigenfunctions of the weighted finite Fourier transform operator, defined by ${\displaystyle \mathcal F_c^{(α)} f(x)=\int_{-1}^1 e^{icxy} f(y)\,(1-y^2)^α\, dy,\,}$ where $ c >0, α> -1$ are two fixed real numbers. The first uniform approximation is given in terms of a Bessel function, whereas the second one is given in terms of a normalized Jacobi polynomial. These eigenfunctions are called generalized prolate spheroidal wave functions (GPSWFs). By using the uniform asymptotic approximations of the GPSWFs, we prove the su…
This paper studies properties of q-Jacobi polynomials and their duals by means of operators of the discrete series representations for the quantum algebra U_q(su_{1,1}). Spectrum and eigenfunctions of these operators are found explicitly. These eigenfunctions, when normalized, form an orthogonal basis in the representation space. The initial U_q(su_{1,1})-basis and the bases of these eigenfunctions are interconnected by matrices, whose entries are expressed in terms of little and big q-Jacobi polynomials. The orthogonality by rows in these unitary connection matrices leads to the orthogonality…
Let $\mathbb{M}$ be a compact $C^\infty$-smooth Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$, $n\geq 3$, and let $φ_λ: Δ_M φ_λ+ λφ_λ= 0$ denote the Laplace eigenfunction on $\mathbb{M}$ corresponding to the eigenvalue $λ$. We show that $$H^{n-1}(\{ φ_λ=0\}) \leq C λ^α,$$ where $α>1/2$ is a constant, which depends on $n$ only, and $C>0$ depends on $\mathbb{M}$ . This result is a consequence of our study of zero sets of harmonic functions on $C^\infty$-smooth Riemannian manifolds. We develop a technique of propagation of smallness for solutions of elliptic PDE that allows us to obtain local bounds from …
Consider a homogenized spectral pencil of exactly solvable linear differential operators $T_{\la}=\sum_{i=0}^k Q_{i}(z)\la^{k-i}\frac {d^i}{dz^i}$, where each $Q_{i}(z)$ is a polynomial of degree at most $i$ and $\la$ is the spectral parameter. We show that under mild nondegeneracy assumptions for all sufficiently large positive integers $n$ there exist exactly $k$ distinct values $\la_{n,j}$, $1\le j\le k$, of the spectral parameter $\la$ such that the operator $T_{\la}$ has a polynomial eigenfunction $p_{n,j}(z)$ of degree $n$. These eigenfunctions split into $k$ different families according…
Multi-indexed Jacobi polynomials are defined by the Wronskian of four types of eigenfunctions of a deformed Pöschl-Teller Hamiltonian. We give a correspondence between multi-indexed Jacobi polynomials and pairs of Maya diagrams, and we show that any multi-indexed Jacobi polynomial is essentially equal to some multi-indexed Jacobi polynomial of two types of eigenfunction. As an application, we show a Wronskian-type formula of some special eigenstates of the deformed Pöschl-Teller Hamiltonian.
The trigonometric monomial $\cos(\left\langle k, x \right\rangle)$ on $\mathbb{T}^d$, a harmonic polynomial $p: \mathbb{S}^{d-1} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ of degree $k$ and a Laplacian eigenfunction $-Δf = k^2 f$ have root in each ball of radius $\sim \|k\|^{-1}$ or $\sim k^{-1}$, respectively. We extend this to linear combinations and show that for any trigonometric polynomials on $\mathbb{T}^d$, any polynomial $p \in \mathbb{R}[x_1, \dots, x_d]$ restricted to $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ and any linear combination of global Laplacian eigenfunctions on $ \mathbb{R}^d$ with $d \in \left\{2,3\right\}$ the …
We introduce orthogonal polynomials $M_j^{μ,\ell}(x)$ as eigenfunctions of a certain self-adjoint fourth order differential operator depending on two parameters $μ\in\mathbb{C}$ and $\ell\in\mathbb{N}_0$. These polynomials arise as $K$-finite vectors in the $L^2$-model of the minimal unitary representations of indefinite orthogonal groups, and reduce to the classical Laguerre polynomials $L_j^μ(x)$ for $\ell=0$. We establish various recurrence relations and integral representations for our polynomials, as well as a closed formula for the $L^2$-norm. Further we show that they are uniquely deter…
In the two preceding parts of this series of papers, we introduced and studied a recursion scheme for constructing joint eigenfunctions $J_N(a_+, a_-,b;x,y)$ of the Hamiltonians arising in the integrable $N$-particle systems of hyperbolic relativistic Calogero-Moser type. We focused on the first steps of the scheme in Part I, and on the cases $N=2$ and $N=3$ in Part II. In this paper, we determine the dominant asymptotics of a similarity transformed function $\rE_N(b;x,y)$ for $y_j-y_{j+1}\to\infty$, $j=1,\ldots, N-1$, and thereby confirm the long standing conjecture that the particles in the …
We analytically solve for the time dependent solutions of various density evolution models. With specific forms of the diffusion, drift and sink coefficients, the eigenfunctions can be expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions. We obtain the relevant discrete and continuous spectra for the eigenfunctions. With non-zero sink terms the discrete spectra eigenfunctions are generalisations of well known orthogonal polynomials: the so-called associated-Laguerre, Bessel, Fisher-Snedecor and Romanovski functions. We use a MacRobert's proof to obtain closed form expressions for the continuous norm…
We construct new families of vector orthogonal polynomials that have the property to be eigenfunctions of some differential operator. They are extensions of the Hermite and Laguerre polynomial systems. A third family, whose first member has been found by Y. Ben Cheikh and K. Douak is also constructed. The ideas behind our approach lie in the studies of bispectral operators. We exploit automorphisms of associative algebras which transform elementary vector orthogonal polynomial systems which are eigenfunctions of a differential operator into other systems of this type.
We construct new families of discrete vector orthogonal polynomials that have the property to be eigenfunctions of some difference operator. They are extensions of Charlier, Meixner and Kravchuk polynomial systems. The ideas behind our approach lie in the studies of bispectral operators. We exploit automorphisms of associative algebras which transform elementary (vector) orthogonal polynomial systems which are eigenfunctions of a difference operator into other systems of this type. While the extension of Charlier polynomilas is well known it is obtained by different methods. The extension of M…
Three sets of exactly solvable one-dimensional quantum mechanical potentials are presented. These are shape invariant potentials obtained by deforming the radial oscillator and the trigonometric/hyperbolic Pöschl-Teller potentials in terms of their degree \ell polynomial eigenfunctions. We present the entire eigenfunctions for these Hamiltonians (\ell=1,2,...) in terms of new orthogonal polynomials. Two recently reported shape invariant potentials of Quesne and Gómez-Ullate et al's are the first members of these infinitely many potentials.
Classical orthogonal polynomial systems of Jacobi, Hermite, Laguerre and Bessel have the property that the polynomials of each system are eigenfunctions of a second order ordinary differential operator. According to a classical theorem by Bochner they are the only systems with this property. Similarly, the polynomials of Charlier, Meixner, Kravchuk and Hahn are both orthogonal and are eigenfunctions of a suitable difference operator of second order. We recall that according to the famous theorem of Favard-Shohat, the condition of orthogonality is equivalent to the 3-term recurrence relation. V…
