We give an example of a simple separable C*-algebra which is not isomorphic to its opposite algebra. Our example is nonnuclear and stably finite, has real rank zero and stable rank one, and has a unique tracial state. It has trivial K_1, and its K_0-group is order isomorphic to a countable subgroup of the real numbers.
We show that every groupoid C*-algebra is isomorphic to its opposite, and deduce that there exist C*-algebras that are not stably isomorphic to groupoid C*-algebras, though many of them are stably isomorphic to twisted groupoid C*-algebras. We also prove that the opposite algebra of a section algebra of a Fell-bundle over a groupoid is isomorphic to the section algebra of a natural opposite bundle.
We exhibit examples of simple separable nuclear C*-algebras, along with actions of the circle group and outer actions of the integers, which are not equivariantly isomorphic to their opposite algebras. In fact, the fixed point subalgebras are not isomorphic to their opposites. The C*-algebras we exhibit are well behaved from the perspective of structure and classification of nuclear C*-algebras: they are unital C*-algebras in the UCT class, with finite nuclear dimension. One is an AH-algebra with unique tracial state and absorbs the CAR algebra tensorially. The other is a Kirchberg algebra.
We give an example of an exact, stably finite, simple. separable C*-algebra D which is not isomorphic to its opposite algebra. Moreover, D has the following additional properties. It is stably finite, approximately divisible, has real rank zero and stable rank one, has a unique tracial state, and the order on projections over D is determined by traces. It also absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z, and in fact absorbs the 3^{\infty} UHF algebra. We can also explicitly compute the K-theory of D, namely K_0 (D) = Z[1/3] with the standard order, and K_1 (D) = 0, as well as the Cuntz semigroup of D.
We show that it is consistent with ZFC that there is a simple nuclear non-separable C*-algebra which is not isomorphic to its opposite algebra. We can furthermore guarantee that this example is an inductive limit of unital copies of the Cuntz algebra O_2, or of the CAR algebra.
In this paper we consider the following problem: When are the preduals of two hyperfinite (=injective) factors $\M$ and $\N$ (on separable Hilbert spaces) cb-isomorphic (i.e., isomorphic as operator spaces)? We show that if $\M$ is semifinite and $\N$ is type III, then their preduals are not cb-isomorphic. Moreover, we construct a one-parameter family of hyperfinite type III$_0$-factors with mutually non cb-isomorphic preduals, and we give a characterization of those hyperfinite factors $\M$ whose preduals are cb-isomorphic to the predual of the unique hyperfinite type III$_1$-factor. In contr…
Let $P \subset A$ be an inclusion of $σ$-unital C*-algebras with a finite index in the sense of Izumi. Then we introduce the Rokhlin property for a conditional expectation $E$ from $A$ onto $P$ and show that if $A$ is simple and satisfies any of the property $(1) \sim (12)$ listed in the below, and $E$ has the Rokhlin property, then so does $P$. (1) Simplicity;(2) Nuclearity;(3) C*-algebras that absorb a given strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra $\mathcal{D}$; (4)C*-algebras of stable rank one; (5) C*-algebras of real rank zero;(6) C*-algebras of nuclear dimension at most $n$, where $n \in Z^+$…
It has been a longstanding problem whether every amenable operator algebra is isomorphic to a (necessarily nuclear) C*-algebra. In this note, we give a nonseparable counterexample. The existence of a separable counterexample remains an open problem. We also initiate a general study of unitarizability of representations of amenable groups in C*-algebras and show that our method cannot produce a separable counterexample.
We search for faces of the convex set consisting of all separable states, which are affinely isomorphic to simplices, to get separable states with unique decompositions. In the two-qutrit case, we found that six product vectors spanning a five dimensional space give rise to a face isomorphic to the 5-dimensional simplex with six vertices, under suitable linear independence assumption. If the partial conjugates of six product vectors also span a 5-dimensional space, then this face is inscribed in the face for PPT states whose boundary shares the fifteen 3-simplices on the boundary of the 5-simp…
Let $X$ be a finite dimensional compact metrizable space. We study a technique which employs semiprojectivity as a tool to produce approximations of $C(X)$-algebras by $C(X)$-subalgebras with controlled complexity. The following applications are given. All unital separable continuous fields of C*-algebras over $X$ with fibers isomorphic to a fixed Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_n$, $n\in\{2,3,...,\infty\}$ are locally trivial. They are trivial if $n=2$ or $n=\infty$. For $n\geq 3$ finite, such a field is trivial if and only if $(n-1)[1_A]=0$ in $K_0(A)$, where $A$ is the C*-algebra of continuous s…
Suppose $A$ is a separable unital $C(X)$-algebra each fibre of which is isomorphic to the same strongly self-absorbing and $K_{1}$-injective $C^{*}$-algebra $D$. We show that $A$ and $C(X) \otimes D$ are isomorphic as $C(X)$-algebras provided the compact Hausdorff space $X$ is finite-dimensional. This statement is known not to extend to the infinite-dimensional case.
We exhibit a countably infinite family of simple, separable, nuclear, and mutually non-isomorphic C*-algebras which agree on K-theory and traces. The algebras do not absorb the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially, answering a question of N. C. Phillips. They are also pairwise shape and Morita equivalent. The distinguishing invariant is the radius of comparison, a non-stable invariant of the Cuntz semigroup.
We extend in this paper the characterisation of a separable nuclear \cst-algebra given by Kirchberg proving that given a unital separable continuous field of nuclear C*-algebras A over a compact metrizable space X, the C(X)-algebra A is isomorphic to a unital C(X)-subalgebra of the trivial continuous field C(X;O_2), image of C(X;O_2) by a norm one projection.
We extend the classical Feferman-Vaught theorem to logic for metric structures. This implies that the reduced powers of elementarily equivalent structures are elementarily equivalent, and therefore they are isomorphic under the Continuum Hypothesis. We also prove the existence of two separable C*-algebras of the form $\bigoplus_i M_{k(i)}(\mathbb{C})$ such that the assertion that their coronas are isomorphic is independent from ZFC, which gives the first example of genuinely non-commutative coronas of separable C*-algebras with this property.
Suppose that A is a C*-algebra for which A is isomorphic to A tensor Z, where Z is the Jiang-Su algebra: a unital, simple, stably finite, separable, nuclear, infinite dimensional C*-algebra with the same Elliott invariant as the complex numbers. We show that: (i) The Cuntz semigroup W(A) of equivalence classes of positive elements in matrix algebras over A is weakly unperforated. (ii) If A is exact, then A is purely infinite if and only if A is traceless. (iii) If A is separable and nuclear, then A is isomorphic to A tensor O_infty if and only if A is traceless. (iv) If A is simple and unital,…
Let A and B be separable nuclear continuous C(X)-algebras over a finite dimensional compact metrizable space X. It is shown that an element $σ$ of the parametrized Kasparov group KK_X(A,B) is invertible if and only if all its fiberwise components $σ_x\in KK(A(x),B(x))$ are invertible. This criterion does not extend to infinite dimensional spaces since there exist nontrivial unital separable continuous fields over the Hilbert cube with all fibers isomorphic to the Cuntz algebra O_2. Several applications to continuous fields of Kirchberg algebras are given. It is also shown that if each fiber of…
We show that every unital amenable separable simple $C^*$-algebra with finite tracial rank which satisfies the UCT has in fact tracial rank at most one. We also show that unital separable simple $C^*$-algebrass which are "tracially" locally AH with slow dimension growth are ${\cal Z}$-stable. As a consequence, unital separable simple $C^*$-algebras which are locally AH with no dimension growth are isomorphic to a unital simple AH-algebra with no dimension growth.
Starting from Kirchberg's theorems announced in 1994, namely O_2 tensor A is isomorphic to O_2 for separable unital nuclear simple A and O_infinity tensor A is isomorphic to A if in addition A is purely infinite, we prove that KK-equivalence implies isomorphism for nonunital separable nuclear purely infinite simple C*-algebras. It follows that if A and B are unital separable nuclear purely infinite simple C*-algebras which satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem, and if there is a graded isomorphism from K_* (A) to K_* (B) which preserves the class of the identity, then A is isomorphic to B.…
We consider the problem of identifying exactly which AF-algebras are isomorphic to a graph C*-algebra. We prove that any separable, unital, Type I C*-algebra with finitely many ideals is isomorphic to a graph C*-algebra. This result allows us to prove that a unital AF-algebra is isomorphic to a graph C*-algebra if and only if it is a Type I C*-algebra with finitely many ideals. We also consider nonunital AF-algebras that have a largest ideal with the property that the quotient by this ideal is the only unital quotient of the AF-algebra. We show that such an AF-algebra is isomorphic to a graph …
We construct faces of the convex set of all $2\otimes 4$ bipartite separable states, which are affinely isomorphic to the simplex $Δ_{9}$ with ten extreme points. Every interior point of these faces is a separable state which has a unique decomposition into 10 product states, even though ranks of the state and its partial transpose are 5 and 7, respectively. We also note that the number 10 is greater than $2\times 4$, to disprove a conjecture on the lengths of qubit-qudit separable states. This face is inscribed in the corresponding face of the convex set of all PPT states so that sub-simplice…
We construct a simple C*-algebra with nuclear dimension zero that is not isomorphic to its tensor product with the Jiang-Su algebra Z, and a hyperfinite II_1 factor not isomorphic to its tensor product with the separable hyperfinite II_1 factor R. The proofs use a weakening of the Continuum Hypothesis.
We show, based on previous results, that two separable simple stably projectionless amenable ${\cal Z}$-stable $C^*$-algebras which satisfy the UCT are isomorphic if and only if they have the same Elliott invariant.
Naimark's problem asks whether a C*-algebra that has only one irreducible *-representation up to unitary equivalence is isomorphic to the C*-algebra of compact operators on some (not necessarily separable) Hilbert space. This problem has been solved in special cases, including separable C*-algebras and Type I C*-algebras. However, in 2004 Akemann and Weaver used the diamond principle to construct a C*-algebra with $\aleph_1$ generators that is a counterexample to Naimark's Problem. More precisely, they showed that the statement "There exists a counterexample to Naimark's Problem that is genera…
Let (G,G^+) be a simple ordered abelian group. We say that G has strong perforation if there exists a non-positive element x in G such that nx is positive and non-zero for some natural number n. Otherwise, the group is said to be weakly unperforated. Examples of simple C*-algebras whose ordered K_0-groups have this property and for which the entire order structure on K_0 is known have, until now, been restricted to the case where K_0 is group isomorphic to the integers. We construct simple, separable, unital C*-algebras with strongly perforated K_0-groups group isomorphic to an arbitrary infin…
Using Kirchberg KK_X-classification of purely infinite, separable, stable, nuclear C*-algebras with finite primitive ideal space, Bentmann showed that filtrated K-theory classifies purely infinite, separable, stable, nuclear C*-algebras that satisfy that all simple subquotients are in the bootstrap class and that the primitive ideal space is finite and of a certain type, referred to as accordion spaces. This result generalizes the results of Meyer-Nest involving finite linearly ordered spaces. Examples have been provided, for any finite non-accordion space, that isomorphic filtrated K-theory d…
We define the Schur multipliers of a separable von Neumann algebra M with Cartan masa A, generalising the classical Schur multipliers of $B(\ell^2)$. We characterise these as the normal A-bimodule maps on M. If M contains a direct summand isomorphic to the hyperfinite II_1 factor, then we show that the Schur multipliers arising from the extended Haagerup tensor product $A \otimes_{eh} A$ are strictly contained in the algebra of all Schur multipliers.
We present a classification theorem for amenable simple stably projectionless C*-algebras with generalized tracial rank one whose $K_0$ vanish on traces which satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem. One of them is denoted by ${\cal Z}_0$ which has a unique tracial state and $K_0({\cal Z}_0)=\mathbb{Z}$ and $K_1({\cal Z}_0)=\{0\}.$ Let $A$ and $B$ be two separable simple $C^*$-algebras satisfying the UCT and have finite nuclear dimension. We show that $A\otimes {\cal Z}_0\cong B\otimes {\cal Z}_0$ if and only if ${\rm Ell}(B\otimes {\cal Z}_0)={\rm Ell}(B\otimes {\cal Z}_0).$ A class of simp…
We prove that separable C*-algebras which are completely close in a natural uniform sense have isomorphic Cuntz semigroups, continuing a line of research developed by Kadison - Kastler, Christensen, and Khoshkam. This result has several applications: we are able to prove that the property of stability is preserved by close C*-algebras provided that one algebra has stable rank one; close C*-algebras must have affinely homeomorphic spaces of lower-semicontinuous quasitraces; strict comparison is preserved by sufficient closeness of C*-algebras. We also examine C*-algebras which have a positive a…
We compute Picard groups of several nuclear and non-nuclear simple stably projectionless C*-algebras. In particular, the Picard group of Razak-Jacelon algebra W_2 is isomorphic to a semidirect product of Out(W_2) with R_+^\times. Moreover, for any separable simple nuclear stably projectionless C*-algebra with a finite dimensional lattice of densely defined lower semicontinuous traces, we show that Z-stability and strict comparison are equivalent. (This is essentially based on the result of Matui and Sato, and Kirchberg's central sequence algebras.) This shows if A is a separable simple nuclear…
We show that if A is a separable, nuclear, O_infty-absorbing (or strongly purely infinite) C*-algebra, which is homotopic to zero in an ideal-system preserving way, then A is the inductive limit of C*-algebras of the form M_k(C_0(G,v)), where G is a finite graph (and C_0(G,v) is the algebra of continuous functions on G that vanish at a distinguished point v in G). We show further that any separable, nuclear, stable, O_2-absorbing C*-algebra is isomorphic to a crossed product of a C*-algebra D with the integers by an action alpha, where D is an inductive limit of C*-algebras of the form M_k(C_0…
If $A_n$ is a sequence of C*-algebras, then the C*-algebra $\prod A_n / \bigoplus A_n$ is called a reduced product. We prove, assuming Todorcevic's Axiom and Martin's Axiom, that every isomorphism between two reduced products of separable, unital UHF algebras must be definable in a strong sense. As a corollary we deduce that two such reduced products $\prod A_n / \bigoplus A_n$ and $\prod B_n / \bigoplus B_n$ are isomorphic if and only if, up to an almost-permutation of $\mathbb{N}$, $A_n$ is isomorphic to $B_n$.
Recently, Boutonnet, Chifan, and Ioana proved that McDuff's examples of continuum many pairwise non-isomorphic separable II$_1$ factors are in fact pairwise non-elementarily equivalent. Their proof proceeded by showing that any ultrapowers of any two distinct McDuff examples are not isomorphic. In a paper by the first two authors of this paper, Ehrenfeucht-Fraïsse games were used to find an upper bound on the quantifier complexity of sentences distinguishing the McDuff examples, leaving it as an open question to find concrete sentences distinguishing the McDuff factors. In this paper, we answe…
We use continuous model theory to obtain several results concerning isomorphisms and embeddings between II_1 factors and their ultrapowers. Among other things, we show that for any II_1 factor M, there are continuum many nonisomorphic separable II_1 factors that have an ultrapower isomorphic to an ultrapower of M. We also give a poor man's resolution of the Connes Embedding Problem: there exists a separable II_1 factor such that all II_1 factors embed into one of its ultrapowers.
We introduce the notion of K-theoretic duality for extensions of separable unital nuclear $C^*$-algebras by using K-homology long exact sequence and cyclic six term exact sequence for K-theory groups of extensions. We then prove that the Toeplitz extension $\mathcal{T}_A$ of a Cuntz-Krieger algebra $\mathcal{O}_A$ is the K-theoretic dual of the Toeplitz extension $\mathcal{T}_{A^t}$ of the Cuntz-Krieger algebra $\mathcal{O}_{A^t}$ for the transposed matrix $A^t$ of $A$. A pair of isomorphic Cuntz--Krieger algebras $\mathcal{O}_A$ and $\mathcal{O}_B$ does not necessarily yield the isomorphic pa…
We give examples of minimal diffeomorphisms of compact connected manifolds which are not topologically orbit equivalent, but whose transformation group C*-algebras are isomorphic. The examples show that the following properties of a minimal diffeomorphism are not invariants of the transformation group C*-algebra: having topologically quasidiscrete spectrum; the action on singular cohomology (when the manifolds are diffeomorphic); the homotopy type of the manifold (when the manifolds have the same dimension); and the dimension of the manifold. These examples also give examples of nonconjugate i…
We analyze $\mathrm{C}^\ast$-algebras, particularly AF-algebras, and their $K_0$-groups in the context of the infinitary logic $\mathcal{L}_{ω_1 ω}$. Given two separable unital AF-algebras $A$ and $B$, and considering their $K_0$-groups as ordered unital groups, we prove that $K_0(A) \equiv_{ω\cdot α} K_0(B)$ implies $A \equiv_αB$, where $M \equiv_βN$ means that $M$ and $N$ agree on all sentences of quantifier rank at most $β$. This implication is proved using techniques from Elliott's classification of separable AF-algebras, together with an adaptation of the Ehrenfeucht-Fraïssé game to the m…
Let $(\A, α)$ and $(\B, β)$ be C*-dynamical systems and assume that $\A$ is a separable simple C*-algebra and that $α$ and $β$ are *-automorphisms. Then the semicrossed products $\A \times_α \bbZ^{+}$ and $\B \times_β \bbZ^{+}$ are isometrically isomorphic if and only if the dynamical systems $(\A, α)$ and $(\B, β)$ are outer conjugate.
I present a proof of Kirchberg's classification theorem: two separable, nuclear, $\mathcal O_\infty$-stable $C^\ast$-algebras are stably isomorphic if and only if they are ideal-related $KK$-equivalent. In particular, this provides a more elementary proof of the Kirchberg--Phillips theorem which is isolated in the paper to increase readability of this important special case.
We study the approximately finite-dimensional (AF) $C^*$-algebras that appear as inductive limits of sequences of finite-dimensional $C^*$-algebras and left-invertible embeddings. We show that there is such a separable AF-algebra $\mathcal A_\mathfrak{F}$ with the property that any separable AF-algebra is isomorphic to a quotient of $\mathcal A_\mathfrak{F}$. Equivalently, by Elliott's classification of separable AF-algebras, there are surjectively universal countable scaled (or with order-unit) dimension groups. This universality is a consequence of our result stating that $\mathcal A_\mathfr…
