We show that if A is a separable, nuclear, O_infty-absorbing (or strongly purely infinite) C*-algebra, which is homotopic to zero in an ideal-system preserving way, then A is the inductive limit of C*-algebras of the form M_k(C_0(G,v)), where G is a finite graph (and C_0(G,v) is the algebra of continuous functions on G that vanish at a distinguished point v in G).
We show further that any separable, nuclear, stable, O_2-absorbing C*-algebra is isomorphic to a crossed product of a C*-algebra D with the integers by an action alpha, where D is an inductive limit of C*-algebras of the form M_k(C_0(G,v)) (and D is O_2-absorbing and homotopic to zero in an ideal-system preserving way).
We consider functors from the category of locally convex algebras to abelian groups and prove invariance under smooth homotopies for weakly J-stable algebras, where J is a harmonic operator ideal. This applies in particular to negative algebraic K-theory. We develop the technology of Kasparov modules in an algebraic setting in order to obtain the results. The article also includes a computation of the first algebraic K-theory of harmonic operator ideals.
Counterexamples to classification of purely infinite, nuclear, separable C*-algebras (in the ideal-related bootstrap class) and with primitive ideal space X using ideal-related K-theory occur for infinitely many finite primitive ideal spaces X, the smallest of which having four points. Ideal-related K-theory is known to be strongly complete for such C*-algebras if they have real rank zero and X has at most four points for all but two exceptional spaces: the pseudo-circle and the diamond space. In this article, we close these two remaining cases. We show that ideal-related K-theory is strongly …
We show that a separable purely infinite C*-algebra is of real rank zero if and only if its primitive ideal space has a basis consisting of compact-open sets and the natural map K_0(I) -> K_0(I/J) is surjective for all closed two-sided ideals J contained in I in the C*-algebra. It follows in particular that if A is any separable C*-algebra, then A tensor O_2 is of real rank zero if and only if the primitive ideal space of A has a basis of compact-open sets, which again happens if and only if A tensor O_2 has the ideal property, also known as property (IP).
Let A be a simple, sigma-unital, non-unital C*-algebra, with metrizable tracial simplex T(A), which is projection-surjective and injective and has strict comparison of positive elements by traces. Then the following are equivalent: (i) A has quasicontinuous scale; (ii) The multiplier algebra M(A) has strict comparison of positive elements by traces; (iii) The coronal algebra M(A)/A is purely infinite; (iii') The quotient M(A)/Imin is purely infinite; (iv) M(A) has finitely many ideals; (v) Imin=Ifin. If furthermore algebra of n by n matrices of A is projection-surjective and injective for ever…
Let (A,G,α) be a partial dynamical system. We show that there is a bijective correspondence between G-invariant ideals of A and ideals in the partial crossed product A xr G provided the action is exact and residually topologically free. Assuming, in addition, a technical condition---automatic when A is abelian---we show that A xr G is purely infinite if and only if the positive nonzero elements in A are properly infinite in A xr G. As an application we verify pure infiniteness of various partial crossed products, including realisations of the Cuntz algebras O_n, O_A, O_N, and O_Z as partial cr…
In 2006, Restorff completed the classification of all Cuntz-Krieger algebras with finitely many ideals (i.e., those that are purely infinite) up to stable isomorphism. He left open the questions concerning strong classification up to stable isomorphism and unital classification. In this paper, we address both questions. We show that any isomorphism between the reduced filtered K-theory of two Cuntz-Krieger algebras with finitely many ideals lifts to a *-isomorphism between the stabilized Cuntz-Krieger algebras. As a result, we also obtain strong unital classification.
We show that separable, nuclear and strongly purely infinite C*-algebras have finite nuclear dimension. In fact, the value is at most three. This exploits a deep structural result of Kirchberg and Rørdam on strongly purely infinite C*-algebras that are homotopic to zero in an ideal-system preserving way.
Using Kirchberg KK_X-classification of purely infinite, separable, stable, nuclear C*-algebras with finite primitive ideal space, Bentmann showed that filtrated K-theory classifies purely infinite, separable, stable, nuclear C*-algebras that satisfy that all simple subquotients are in the bootstrap class and that the primitive ideal space is finite and of a certain type, referred to as accordion spaces. This result generalizes the results of Meyer-Nest involving finite linearly ordered spaces. Examples have been provided, for any finite non-accordion space, that isomorphic filtrated K-theory d…
We study the crossed product $C^*$-algebra associated to injective endomorphisms, which turns out to be equivalent to study the crossed product by the dilated autormorphism. We prove that the dilation of the Bernoulli $p$-shift endomorphism is topologically free. As a consequence, we have a way to twist any endomorphism of a $\D$-absorbing $C^*$-algebra into one whose dilated automorphism is essentially free and have the same $K$-theory map than the original one. This allows us to construct purely infinite crossed products $C^*$-algebras with diverse ideal structures.
Let $0\longrightarrow \B\stackrel{j}{\longrightarrow}E\stackrelπ{\longrightarrow}\A\longrightarrow 0$ be an extension of $\A$ by $\B$, where $\A$ is a unital simple purely infinite $C^{*}$--algebra. When $\B$ is a simple separable essential ideal of the unital $C^{*}$--algebra $E$ with $\RR(\B)=0$ and {\rm(PC)}, $K_{0}(E)=\{[p]\mid p$ is a projection in $E\setminus B\}$; When $B$ is a stable $C^{*}$--algebra, $\U(C(X,E))/\U_0(C(X,E))\cong K_1(C(X,E))$ for any compact Hausdorff space $X$.
In this paper, we study the ideal structure of reduced $C^*$-algebras $C^*_r(G)$ associated to étale groupoids $G$. In particular, we characterize when there is a one-to-one correspondence between the closed, two-sided ideals in $C_r^*(G)$ and the open invariant subsets of the unit space $G^{(0)}$ of $G$. As a consequence, we show that if $G$ is an inner exact, essentially principal, ample groupoid, then $C_r^*(G)$ is (strongly) purely infinite if and only if every non-zero projection in $C_0(G^{(0)})$ is properly infinite in $C_r^*(G)$. We also establish a sufficient condition on the ample gr…
A universal coefficient theorem in the setting of Kirchberg's ideal-related KK-theory was obtained in the fundamental case of a C*-algebra with one specified ideal by Bonkat and proved there to split, unnaturally, under certain conditions. Employing certain K-theoretical information derivable from the given operator algebras in a way introduced here, we shall demonstrate that Bonkat's UCT does not split in general. Related methods lead to information on the complexity of the K-theory which must be used to classify *-isomorphisms for purely infinite C*-algebras with one non-trivial ideal.
Consider a graph C*-algebra C*(E) with a purely infinite ideal I (possibly all of C*(E)) such that I has only finitely many ideals and C*(E)/I is approximately finite dimensional. We prove that the nuclear dimension of C*(E) is 1. If I has infinitely many ideals, then the nuclear dimension of C*(E) is either 1 or 2.
We give necessary and sufficient conditions which a graph should satisfy in order for its associated $C^\ast$-algebra to have a $T_1$ primitive ideal space. We give a description of which one-point sets in such a primitive ideal space are open, and use this to prove that any purely infinite graph $C^\ast$-algebra with a $T_1$ (in particular Hausdorff) primitive ideal space, is a $c_0$-direct sum of Kirchberg algebras. Moreover, we show that graph $C^\ast$-algebras with a $T_1$ primitive ideal space canonically may be given the structure of a $C(\widetilde{\mathbb N})$-algebra, and that isomorp…
We augment Restorff's classification of purely infinite Cuntz-Krieger algebras by describing the range of his invariant on purely infinite Cuntz-Krieger algebras. We also describe its range on purely infinite graph C*-algebras with finitely many ideals, and provide 'unital' range results for purely infinite Cuntz-Krieger algebras and unital purely infinite graph C*-algebras.
We initiate the study of the internal structure of C*-algebras associated to a left cancellative semigroup in which any two principal right ideals are either disjoint or intersect in another principal right ideal; these are variously called right LCM semigroups or semigroups that satisfy Clifford's condition. Our main findings are results about uniqueness of the full semigroup C*-algebra. We build our analysis upon a rich interaction between the group of units of the semigroup and the family of constructible right ideals. As an application we identify algebraic conditions on S under which C*(S…
We prove lifting theorems for completely positive maps going out of exact $C^\ast$-algebras, where we remain in control of which ideals are mapped into which. A consequence is, that if $\mathsf X$ is a second countable topological space, $\mathfrak A$ and $\mathfrak B$ are separable, nuclear $C^\ast$-algebras over $\mathsf X$, and the action of $\mathsf X$ on $\mathfrak A$ is continuous, then $E(\mathsf X; \mathfrak A, \mathfrak B) \cong KK(\mathsf X; \mathfrak A, \mathfrak B)$ naturally. As an application, we show that a separable, nuclear, strongly purely infinite $C^\ast$-algebra $\mathfrak…
In \verb|arXiv:1212.5901| we associated an algebra $\Gami(\fA)$ to every bornological algebra $\fA$ and an ideal $I_{S(\fA)}\triqui\Gami(\fA)$ to every symmetric ideal $S\triqui\elli$. We showed that $I_{S(\fA)}$ has $K$-theoretical properties which are similar to those of the usual stabilization with respect to the ideal $J_S\triqui\cB$ of the algebra $\cB$ of bounded operators in Hilbert space which corresponds to $S$ under Calkin's correspondence. In the current article we compute the relative cyclic homology $HC_*(\Gami(\fA):I_{S(\fA)})$. Using these calculations, and the results of \emph{…
Elliott and Kucerovsky stated that a non-unital extension of separable $C^\ast$-algebras with a stable ideal, is nuclearly absorbing if and only if the extension is purely large. However, their proof was flawed. We give a counter example to their theorem as stated, but establish an equivalent formulation of nuclear absorption under a very mild additional assumption to being purely large. In particular, if the quotient algebra is non-unital, then we show that the original theorem applies. We also examine how this effects results in classification theory.
We prove that the natural homomorphism from Kirchberg's ideal-related KK-theory, KKE(e, e'), with one specified ideal, into Hom_Λ (\underline{K}_{E} (e), \underline{K}_{E} (e')) is an isomorphism for all extensions e and e' of separable, nuclear C*-algebras in the bootstrap category N with the K-groups of the associated cyclic six term exact sequence being finitely generated, having zero exponential map and with the K_{1}-groups of the quotients being free abelian groups. This class includes all Cuntz-Krieger algebras with exactly one non-trivial ideal. Combining our results with the results o…
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be an ultragraph and let $C^*(\mathcal{G})$ be the associated $C^*$-algebra introduced by Mark Tomforde. For any gauge invariant ideal $I_{(H,B)}$ of $C^*(\mathcal{G})$, we approach the quotient $C^*$-algebra $C^*(\mathcal{G})/I_{(H,B)}$ by the $C^*$-algebra of finite graphs and prove versions of gauge invariant and Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorems for it. We then describe primitive gauge invariant ideals and determine purely infinite ultragraph $C^*$-algebras (in the sense of Kirchberg-R$ø$rdam) via Fell bundles.
We define type $\mathfrak{A}$, type $\mathfrak{B}$, type $\mathfrak{C}$ as well as C*-semi-finite C*-algebras. It is shown that a von Neumann algebra is a type $\mathfrak{A}$, type $\mathfrak{B}$, type $\mathfrak{C}$ or C*-semi-finite C*-algebra if and only if it is, respectively, a type I, type II, type III or semi-finite von Neumann algebra. Any type I C*-algebra is of type $\mathfrak{A}$ (actually, type $\mathfrak{A}$ coincides with the discreteness as defined by Peligrad and Zsido), and any type II C*-algebra (as defined by Cuntz and Pedersen) is of type $\mathfrak{B}$. Moreover, any type …
We define a Riesz type interpolation property for the Cuntz semigroup of a $C^*$-algebra and prove it is satisfied by the Cuntz semigroup of every $C^*$-algebra with the ideal property. Related to this, we obtain two characterizations of the ideal property in terms of the Cuntz semigroup of the $C^*$-algebra. Some additional characterizations are proved in the special case of the stable, purely infinite $C^*$-algebras, and two of them are expressed in language of the Cuntz semigroup. We introduce a notion of comparison of positive elements for every unital $C^*$-algebra that has (normalized) q…
We initiate the study of absorbing representations of $C^\ast$-algebras with respect to closed operator convex cones. We completely determine when such absorbing representations exist, which leads to the question of characterising when a representation is absorbing, as in the classical Weyl-von Neumann type theorem of Voiculescu. In the classical case, this was proven by Elliott and Kucerovsky who proved that a representation is nuclearly absorbing if and only if it induces a purely large extension. By considering a related problem for extensions of $C^\ast$-algebras, which we call the purely …
To an arbitrary directed graph we associate a row-finite directed graph whose C*-algebra contains the C*-algebra of the original graph as a full corner. This allows us to generalize results for C*-algebras of row-finite graphs to C*-algebras of arbitrary graphs: the uniqueness theorem, simplicity criteria, descriptions of the ideals and primitive ideal space, and conditions under which a graph algebra is AF and purely infinite. Our proofs require only standard Cuntz-Krieger techniques and do not rely on powerful constructs such as groupoids, Exel-Laca algebras, or Cuntz-Pimsner algebras.
Pimsner introduced the C*-algebra O_X generated by a Hilbert bimodule X over a C*-algebra A. We look for additional conditions that X should satisfy in order to study simplicity and, more generally, the ideal structure of O_X when X is finite projective. We introduce two conditions: `(I)-freeness' and `(II)-freeness', stronger than the former, in analogy with [J. Cuntz, W. Krieger, Invent. Math. 56, 251-268] and [J. Cuntz, Invent. Math. 63, 25-40] respectively. (I)-freeness comprehend the case of the bimodules associated with an inclusion of simple C*-algebras with finite index, real or pseudo…
We investigate the interplay of the following regularity properties for non-simple C*-algebras: finite nuclear dimension, Z-stability, and algebraic regularity in the Cuntz semigroup. We show that finite nuclear dimension implies algebraic regularity in the Cuntz semigroup, provided that known type I obstructions are avoided. We demonstrate how finite nuclear dimension can be used to study the structure of the central sequence algebra, by factorizing the identity map on the central sequence algebra, in a manner resembling the factorization arising in the definition of nuclear dimension. Result…
We study the quotients of the Toeplitz C*-algebra of a quasi-lattice ordered group (G,P), which we view as crossed products by a partial actions of G on closed invariant subsets of a totally disconnected compact Hausdorff space, the Nica spectrum of (G,P). Our original motivation and our main examples are drawn from right-angled Artin groups, but many of our results are valid for more general quasi-lattice ordered groups. We show that the Nica spectrum has a unique minimal closed invariant subset, which we call the boundary spectrum, and we define the boundary quotient to be the crossed produc…
Let $\mathcal A$ be a simple, $σ$-unital, non-unital, non-elementary C*-algebra and let $I_{min}$ be the intersection of all the ideals of $\mathcal M(\mathcal A)$ that properly contain $\mathcal A$. $I_{min}$ coincides with the ideal defined by Lin (Simple C*-algebras with continuous scales and simple corona algebras. 112, (1991) Proc. Amer.Math. Soc) in terms of approximate units of $\mathcal A$ and $I_{min}/\mathcal A$ is purely infinite and simple. If $\mathcal A$ is separable, or if $\mathcal A$ has the (SP) property and its dimension semigroup $D(\mathcal A)$ of Murray-von Neumann equiva…
We show that filtered K-theory is equivalent to a substantially smaller invariant for all real-rank-zero C*-algebras with certain primitive ideal spaces -- including the infinitely many so-called accordion spaces for which filtered K-theory is known to be a complete invariant. As a consequence, we give a characterization of purely infinite Cuntz-Krieger algebras whose primitive ideal space is an accordion space.
In the first part of the paper, we develop a theory of crossed products of a $C^*$-algebra $A$ by an arbitrary (not necessarily extendible) endomorphism $α:A\to A$. We consider relative crossed products $C^*(A,α;J)$ where $J$ is an ideal in $A$, and describe up to Morita-Rieffel equivalence all gauge invariant ideals in $C^*(A,α;J)$ and give six term exact sequences determining their $K$-theory. We also obtain certain criteria implying that all ideals in $C^*(A,α;J)$ are gauge invariant, and that $C^*(A,α;J)$ is purely infinite. In the second part, we consider a situation where $A$ is a $C_0(X…
We study C*-algebras associated to right LCM semigroups, that is, semigroups which are left cancellative and for which any two principal right ideals are either disjoint or intersect in another principal right ideal. If $P$ is such a semigroup, its C*-algebra admits a natural boundary quotient $\mathcal{Q}(P)$. We show that $\mathcal{Q}(P)$ is isomorphic to the tight C*-algebra of a certain inverse semigroup associated to $P$, and thus is isomorphic to the C*-algebra of an étale groupoid. We use this to give conditions on $P$ which guarantee that $\mathcal{Q}(P)$ is simple and purely infinite,…
