In this article we prove an upper bound for a Hilbert polynomial on quaternionic Kaehler manifolds of positive scalar curvature. As corollaries we obtain bounds on the quaternionic volume and the degree of the associated twistor space. Moreover the article contains some details on differential equations of finite type. Part of it is used in the proof of the main theorem.
We define the orthogonal Bakry-Émery tensor as a generalization of the orthogonal Ricci curvature, and then study diameter theorems on Kähler and quaternionic Kähler manifolds under positivity assumption on the orthogonal Bakry-Émery tensor. Moreover, under such assumptions on the orthogonal Bakry-Émery tensor and the holomorphic or quaternionic sectional curvature on a Kähler manifold or a quaternionic Kähler manifold respectively, the Bonnet-Myers type diameter bounds are sharper than in the Riemannian case.
In this paper, we define a differential operator as a modified Dirac operator. Using the operator, we introduce a quaternionic $k$-vector field on a quaternionic Kähler manifold and show that any quaternionic $k$-vector field corresponds to a holomorphic $k$-vector field on the twistor space. We calculate the dimension of the space of quaternionic $k$-vector fields on $\mathbb{H}P^n$.
Possible holonomy algebras of pseudo-quaternionic-Kählerian manifolds of signature $(4,4)$ are classified. Using this, a new proof of the classification of simply connected pseudo-quaternionic-Kählerian symmetric spaces of signature $(4,4)$ is obtained.
The main purpose of the following article is to introduce a \emph{Lie theoretical} approach to the problem of classifying pseudo quaternionic-Kähler (QK) reductions of the pseudo QK symmetric spaces, otherwise called \emph{generalized Wolf spaces}.
Given a quaternionic manifold $M$ with a certain $\mathrm{U}(1)$-symmetry, we construct a hypercomplex manifold $M'$ of the same dimension. This construction generalizes the quaternionic Kähler/hyper-Kähler-correspondence. As an example of this construction, we obtain a compact homogeneous hypercomplex manifold which does not admit any hyper-Kähler structure. Therefore our construction is a proper generalization of the quaternionic Kähler/hyper-Kähler-correspondence.
We study the behavior of connections and curvature under the HK/QK correspondence, proving simple formulae expressing the Levi-Civita connection and Riemann curvature tensor on the quaternionic Kähler side in terms of the initial hyper-Kähler data. Our curvature formula refines a well-known decomposition theorem due to Alekseevsky. As an application, we compute the norm of the curvature tensor for a series of complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds arising from flat hyper-Kähler manifolds. We use this to deduce that these manifolds are of cohomogeneity one.
The conformal infinity of a quaternionic-Kahler metric on a 4n-manifold with boundary is a codimension 3-distribution on the boundary called quaternionic contact. In dimensions 4n-1 greater than 7, a quaternionic contact structure is always the conformal infinity of a quaternionic-Kahler metric. On the contrary, in dimension 7, we prove a criterion for quaternionic contact structures to be the conformal infinity of a quaternionic- Kahler metric. This allows us to find the quaternionic-contact structures on the 7-sphere close to the conformal infinity of the quaternionic hyperbolic metric and w…
We describe explicitly all quaternionic contact hypersurfaces (qc-hypersurfaces) in the flat quaternion space $\Hnn$ and the quaternion projective space. We show that up to a quaternionic affine transformation a qc-hypersurface in $\Hnn$ is contained in one of the three qc-hyperquadrics in $\Hnn$. Moreover, we show that an embedded qc-hypersurface in a hyper-Kähler manifold is qc-conformal to a qc-Einstein space and the Riemannian curvature tensor of the ambient hyper-Kähler metric is degenerate along the hypersurface.
We study geometric first order differential operators on quaternionic Kähler manifolds. Their principal symbols are related to the enveloping algebra and Casimir elements for $\Sp(1)\Sp(n)$. This observation leads to anti-symmetry of the principal symbols and Bochner-Weitzenböck formulas for operators. As an application, we estimate the first eigenvalues of them.
We show that any compact quaternionic contact (qc) hypersurfaces in a hyper-Kähler manifold which is not totally umbilical has an induced qc structure, locally qc homothetic to the standard 3-Sasakian sphere. We also show that any nowhere umbilical qc hypersurface in a hyper-Kähler manifold is endowed with an involutive 7-dimensional distribution whose integral leafs are locally qc-conformal to the standard 3-Sasakian sphere.
We prove that any asymptotically locally Euclidean scalar-flat Kähler 4-orbifold whose isometry group contains a 2-torus is isometric, up to an orbifold covering, to a quaternionic-complex quotient of a $k$-dimensional quaternionic vector space by a $(k-1)$-torus. In order to do so, we first prove that any compact anti-self-dual 4-orbifold with positive Euler characteristic whose isometry group contains a 2-torus is conformally equivalent, up to an orbifold covering, to a quaternionic quotient of $k$-dimensional quaternionic projective space by a $(k-1)$-torus.
Classification results are given for (i) compact quaternionic Kähler manifolds with a cohomogeneity-one action of a semi-simple group, (ii) certain complete hyperKähler manifolds with a cohomogeneity-two action of a semi-simple group preserving each complex structure, (iii) compact 3-Sasakian manifolds which are cohomogeneity one with respect to a group of 3-Sasakian symmetries. Information is also obtained about non-compact quaternionic Kähler manifolds of cohomogeneity one and the cohomogeneity of adjoint orbits in complex semi-simple Lie algebras.
The holonomy group $G$ of a pseudo-quaternionic-Kählerian manifold of signature $(4r,4s)$ with non-zero scalar curvature is contained in $\Sp(1)\cdot\Sp(r,s)$ and it contains $\Sp(1)$. It is proved that either $G$ is irreducible, or $s=r$ and $G$ preserves an isotropic subspace of dimension $4r$, in the last case, there are only two possibilities for the connected component of the identity of such $G$. This gives the classification of possible connected holonomy groups of pseudo-quaternionic-Kählerian manifolds of non-zero scalar curvature.
We provide a new, self-contained proof of the classification of homogeneous 3-Sasakian manifolds, which was originally obtained by Boyer, Galicki and Mann. In doing so, we construct an explicit one-to-one correspondence between simply connected homogeneous 3-Sasakian manifolds and simple complex Lie algebras via the theory of root systems. We also discuss why the real projective spaces are the only non-simply connected homogeneous 3-Sasakian manifolds and derive the famous classification of homogeneous positive quaternionic Kähler manifolds due to Wolf and Alekseevskii from our results.
We prove that a compact quaternionic-Kähler manifold of dimension $4n\geq 8$ admitting a conformal-Killing 2-form which is not Killing, is isomorphic to the quaternionic projective space, with its standard quaternionic-Kähler structure.
On a para-quaternionic Kähler manifold $(\widetilde M^{4n},Q,\widetilde g)$, which is first of all a pseudo-Riemannian manifold, a natural definition of (almost) Kähler and (almost) para-Kähler submanifold $(M^{2m},\mathcal{J},g)$ can be given where $\mathcal{J}=J_1|_M$ is a (para-)complex structure on $M$ which is the restriction of a section $J_1$ of the para-quaternionic bundle $Q$. In this paper, we extend to such a submanifold $M$ most of the results proved by Alekseevsky and Marchiafava, 2001, where Hermitian and Kähler submanifolds of a quaternionic Kähler manifold have been studied. Co…
A 2-form on a quaternionic-Kahler manifold (M, g) is called compatible (with the quaternionic structure) if it is a section of the direct sum bundle S^2(H) \oplus S^2(E). We construct a connection D on S^2(H) \oplus S^2(E)\oplus TM, which is a prolongation of the conformal-Killing operator acting on compatible 2-forms. We show that D is flat if and only if the quaternionic-Weyl tensor of (M,g) is zero. Consequences of this result are developed. We construct a skew-symmetric multiplication on the space of conformal-Killing 2-forms on (M,g) and we study its properties in connection with the subs…
We construct examples of complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds with an end of finite volume, which are not locally homogeneous. The manifolds are aspherical with fundamental group which is up to an infinite cyclic extension a semi-direct product of a lattice in a semi-simple group with a lattice in a Heisenberg group. Their universal covering is a cohomogeneity one deformation of a symmetric space of non-compact type.
We study symmetry properties of quaternionic Kähler manifolds obtained by the HK/QK correspondence. To any Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of infinitesimal automorphisms of the initial hyper-Kähler data we associate a central extension of $\mathfrak{g}$, acting by infinitesimal automorphisms of the resulting quaternionic Kähler manifold. More specifically, we study the metrics obtained by the one-loop deformation of the $c$-map construction, proving that the Lie algebra of infinitesimal automorphisms of the initial projective special Kähler manifold gives rise to a Lie algebra of Killing fields of …
Let $M^{4n}$ be a complete quaternionic Kähler manifold with scalar curvature bounded below by $-16n(n+2)$. We get a sharp estimate for the first eigenvalue $λ_1(M)$ of the Laplacian which is $λ_1(M)\le (2n+1)^2$. If the equality holds, then either $M$ has only one end, or $M$ is diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}\times N$ with N given by a compact manifold. Moreover, if $M$ is of bounded curvature, $M$ is covered by the quaterionic hyperbolic space $\mathbb{QH}^n$ and $N$ is a compact quotient of the generalized Heisenberg group. When $λ_1(M)\ge \frac{8(n+2)}3$, we also prove that $M$ must have onl…
We give an explicit formula for the quaternionic Kähler metrics obtained by the HK/QK correspondence. As an application, we give a new proof of the fact that the Ferrara-Sabharwal metric as well as its one-loop deformation is quaternionic Kähler. A similar explicit formula is given for the analogous (K/K) correspondence between Kähler manifolds endowed with a Hamiltonian Killing vector field. As an example, we apply this formula in the case of an arbitrary conical Kähler manifold.
We construct a quaternionic-Kähler manifold from a conical special Kähler manifold with a certain type of mutually-local variation of BPS structures. We give global and local explicit formulas for the quaternionic-Kähler metric, and specify under which conditions it is positive-definite. Locally, the metric is a deformation of the 1-loop corrected Ferrara-Sabharval metric obtained via the supergravity c-map. The type of quaternionic-Kähler metrics we obtain are related to work in the physics literature by S. Alexandrov and S. Banerjee, where they discuss the hypermultiplet moduli space metric …
We prove that, given a certain isometric action of a two-dimensional Abelian group A on a quaternionic Kähler manifold M which preserves a submanifold N\subset M, the quotient M'=N/A has a natural Kähler structure. We verify that the assumptions on the group action and on the submanifold N\subset M are satisfied for a large class of examples obtained from the supergravity c-map. In particular, we find that all quaternionic Kähler manifolds M in the image of the c-map admit an integrable complex structure compatible with the quaternionic structure, such that N\subset M is a complex submanifold.…
A quaternionic Kähler manifold M is called {\it positive} if it has positive scalar curvature. The main purpose of this paper is to prove several connectedness theorems for quaternionic immersions in a quaternionic Kähler manifold, e.g. the Barth-Lefschetz type connectedness theorem for quaternionic submanifolds in a positive quaternionic Kähler manifold. As applications we prove that, among others, a 4m-dimensional positive quaternionic Kähler manifold with symmetry rank at least (m-2) must be either isometric to \Bbb HP^m or Gr_2(\Bbb C^{m+2}), if m\ge 10.
We study relations between quaternionic Riemannian manifolds admitting different types of symmetries. We show that any hyperKahler manifold admitting hyperKahler potential and triholomorphic action of S^1 can be constructed from another hyperKahler manifold (of lower dimention) with an action of S^1 which fixes one complex structure and rotates the other two and vice versa. We also study corresponding quaternionic Kahler manifolds equipped with a quaternionic Kahler action of the circle. In particular we show that any positive quaternionic Kahler manifold with S^1 symmetry admits a Kahler metr…
The target space of a (4,0) supersymmetric two-dimensional sigma model with Wess-Zumino term has a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion and holonomy contained in Sp(n).Sp(1), QKT-connection. We study the geometry of QKT-connections. We find conditions to the existence of a QKT-connection and prove that if it exists it is unique. Studying conformal transformations we obtain a lot of (compact) examples of QKT manifolds. We present a (local) description of 4-dimensional homogeneous QKT structures relying on the known result of naturally reductive homogeneous Riemannian manifolds. We con…
We consider a general 4n-dimensional quaternionic Kahler geometry with a free action of the torus T^(n+1). The toric action lifts onto the Swann bundle of the quaternionic Kahler space to a tri-holomorphic action that commutes with the standard H* action on the bundle. By matching Pedersen and Poon's generalized Gibbons-Hawking Ansatz description of the total space with the Swann picture we extract the local geometry of the quaternionic Kahler base. Specifically, we obtain explicit expressions for the quaternionic Kahler metric and Sp(1) connection in terms of a set of reduced Higgs fields and…
We review the theory of quaternionic Kahler and hyperkahler structures. Then we consider the tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold M with a metric connection D (with torsion) and with its well estabilished canonical complex structure. With an extra almost Hermitian structure on M it is possible to find a quaternionic Hermitian structure on TM, which is quaternionic Kahler if, and only if, D is flat and torsion free. We also review the symplectic nature of TM. Finally a proper S^3-bundle of complex structures is introduced, expanding to TM the well known twistor bundle of M.
We prove that every projective special Kähler manifold with \emph{regular boundary behaviour} is complete and defines a family of complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds depending on a parameter $c\ge 0$. We also show that, irrespective of its boundary behaviour, every complete projective special Kähler manifold with \emph{cubic prepotential} gives rise to such a family. Examples include non-trivial deformations of non-compact symmetric quaternionic Kähler manifolds.
We present a novel approach to the study of Yang-Mills instantons on quaternionic Kähler manifolds, based on an extension of the harmonic space method of constructing instantons on hyperkähler manifolds. Our results establish a bijection between local equivalence classes of instantons on quaternionic Kähler manifolds M and equivalence classes of certain holomorphic maps on an appropriate SL_2(C)-bundle over the Swann bundle of M.
We give an overview of some recent results in hypersymplectic and para-quaternionic Kahler geometry, and introduce the notion of split three-Sasakian manifold. In particular, we discuss the twistor spaces and Swann bundles of para-quaternionic Kahler manifolds. These are used to classify examples with a fully homogeneous action of a semi-simple Lie group, and to construct distinct para-quaternionic Kahler metrics from indefinite real analytic conformal manifolds. We also indicate how the theory of toric varieties gives rise to constructions of hypersymplectic manifolds.
We give a procedure for constructing an $8n$-dimensional HKT Lie algebra starting from a $4n$-dimensional one by using a quaternionic representation of the latter. The strong (respectively, weak, hyper-Kähler, balanced) condition is preserved by our construction. As an application of our results we obtain a new compact HKT manifold with holonomy in $SL(n,\Bbb H)$ which is not a nilmanifold. We find in addition new compact strong HKT manifolds. We also show that every Kähler Lie algebra equipped with a flat, torsion-free complex connection gives rise to an HKT Lie algebra. We apply this method …
We classify all complete projective special real manifolds with reducible cubic potential, obtaining four series. For two of the series the manifolds are homogeneous, for the two others the respective automorphism group acts with co-homogeneity one. Complete projective special real manifolds give rise to complete quaternionic Kähler manifolds via the supergravity q-map, which is the composition of the supergravity c-map and r-map. We develop curvature formulas for manifolds in the image of the q-map. Applying the q-map to one of the above series of projective special real manifolds, we obtain …
We prove that if the fundamental 4-form of an almost-quaternionic Hermitian manifold (M, Q, g) of dimension at least eight satisfies the conformal-Killing equation, then (M, Q, g) is quaternionic-Kahler.
Let V be the pseudo-Euclidean vector space of signature (p,q), p>2 and W a module over the even Clifford algebra Cl^0 (V). A homogeneous quaternionic manifold (M,Q) is constructed for any spin(V)-equivariant linear map Π: \wedge^2 W \to V. If the skew symmetric vector valued bilinear form Πis nondegenerate then (M,Q) is endowed with a canonical pseudo-Riemannian metric g such that (M,Q,g) is a homogeneous quaternionic pseudo-Kähler manifold. The construction is shown to have a natural mirror in the category of supermanifolds. In fact, for any spin(V)-equivariant linear map Π: Sym^2 W \to V a h…
We generalise the hyper-Kahler/quaternionic Kahler (HK/QK) correspondence to include para-geometries, and present a new concise proof that the target manifold of the HK/QK correspondence is quaternionic Kahler. As an application, we construct one-parameter deformations of the temporal and Euclidean supergravity c-map metrics and show that they are para-quaternionic Kahler.
The main result is that the qc-scalar curvature of a seven dimensional quaternionic contact Einstein manifold is a constant. In addition, we characterize qc-Einstein structures with certain flat vertical connection and develop their local structure equations. Finally, regular qc-Ricci flat structures are shown to fibre over hyper-Kahler manifolds.
We classify isometric actions of compact Lie groups on quaternionic-Kähler projective spaces with vanishing homogeneity rank. We also show that they are not in general quaternion-coisotropic.
To give an almost quaternionic structure on a 4n-manifold $M$ is equivalent to give its bundle of twistors $Z(Q)\longrightarrow M$. When $Q$ is invariant under a torsion free connection, $Z(Q) $ can be provided with an almost complex structure $ \mathbb J $. In the case $ n = 1 $ Atiyah, Hitchin and Singer have related the integrability of $ \mathbb J $ to the geometry of $ (M, Q) $. For $ n> 1 $ Salamon showed that the almost complex structure $ \mathbb J $ on $ Z (Q) $ is always integrable. The purpose of this article is to extend these results to the generalized complex geometry. We begin b…
Firstly we give a condition to split off the K"ahler factor from a nearly pseudo-K"ahler manifold and apply this to get a structure result in dimension 8. Secondly we extend the construction of nearly K"ahler manifolds from twistor spaces to negatively curved quaternionic K"ahler manifolds and para-quaternionic K"ahler manifolds. The class of nearly pseudo-K"ahler manifolds obtained from this construction is characterized by a holonomic condition. The combination of these results enables us to give a classification result in (real) dimension 10. Moreover, we show that a strict nearly pseudo-K"…
We introduce the notion of tame $ρ$-quaternionic manifold that permits the construction of a finite family of $ρ$-connections, significant for the geometry involved. This provides, for example, the following: (1) a new simple global characterisation of flat (complex-)quaternionic manifolds, and (2) a new simple construction of the metric and the corresponding Levi-Civita connection of a quaternionic-Kähler manifold by starting from its twistor space; moreover, our method provides a natural generalization of this correspondence. Also, a new construction of quaternionic manifolds is obtained, an…
We show that every $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasaki manifold of dimension $4n + 3$ admits a locally defined Riemannian submersion over a quaternionic Kähler manifold of scalar curvature $16n(n+2)αδ$. In the non-degenerate case ($δ\neq 0$) we describe all homogeneous $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasaki manifolds fibering over symmetric Wolf spaces (case $αδ> 0$) and over their the noncompact dual symmetric spaces (case $αδ< 0$). If $αδ> 0$, this yields a complete classification of homogeneous $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasaki manifolds; for $αδ< 0$, we provide a general construction of homogeneous $3$-$(α,δ)$-Sasaki manifolds fibering over…
The target space of a (4,0) supersymmetric two-dimensional sigma model with Wess-Zumino term has a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion and holonomy contained in Sp(n)Sp(1) (resp. Sp(n)), QKT (resp. HKT)-spaces. We study the geometry of QKT, HKT manifold and their twistor spaces. We show that the Swann bundle of a QKT manifold admits a HKT structure with special symmetry if and only if the twistor space of the QKT manifold admits an almost hermitian structure with totally skew-symmetric Nijenhuis tensor, thus connecting two structures arising from quantum field theories and supersymm…
Penrose's two-spinor notation for $4$-dimensional Lorentzian manifolds can be extended to two-component notation for quaternionic manifolds, which is a very useful tool for calculation. We construct a family of quaternionic complexes over unimodular quaternionic manifolds by elementary calculation. On complex quaternionic manifolds, which are essentially the complexification of real analytic quaternionic Kähler manifolds, the existence of these complexes was established by Baston by using twistor transformations and spectral sequences. Unimodular quaternionic manifolds constitute a nice and la…
This is a survey on quaternion Hermitian Weyl (locally conformally quaternion Kähler) and hyperhermitian Weyl (locally conformally hyperkähler) manifolds. These geometries appear by requesting the compatibility of some quaternion Hermitian or hyperhermitian structure with a Weyl structure. The motivation for such a study is two-fold: it comes from the constantly growing interest in Weyl (and Einstein-Weyl) geometry and, on the other hand, from the necessity of understanding the existing classes of quaternion Hermitian manifolds.
We consider complete nearly Kähler manifolds with the canonical Hermitian connection. We prove some metric properties of strict nearly Kähler manifolds and give a sufficient condition for the reducibility of the canonical Hermitian connection. A holonomic condition for a nearly Kähler manifold to be a twistor space over a quaternionic Kähler manifold is given. This enables us to give classification results in 10-dimensions.
In this article we discuss the interaction between the geometry of a quaternion-Kahler manifold M and that of the Grassmannian G(3,g) of oriented 3-dimensional subspaces of a compact Lie algebra g. This interplay is described mainly through the moment mapping induced by the action of a group G of quaternionic isometries on M. We give an alternative expression for the endomorphisms I_{1},I_{2},I_{3}, both in terms of the holonomy representation of M and the structure of the Grassmannian's tangent space. A correspondence between the solutions of respective twistor-type equations on M and G(3,g) …
We discuss the geometry of the c-map from projective special Kähler to quaternionic Kähler manifolds using the twist construction to provide a global approach to Hitchin's description. As found by Alexandrov et al. and Alekseevsky et al. this is related to the quaternionic flip of Haydys. We prove uniqueness statements for several steps of the construction. In particular, we show that given a hyperKähler manifold with a rotating symmetry, there is essentially only a one parameter degree of freedom in constructing a quaternionic Kähler manifold of the same dimension. We demonstrate how examples…
Let Z be a compact complex (2n+1)-manifold which carries a {\em complex contact structure}, meaning a codimension-1 holomorphic sub-bundle D of TZ which is maximally non-integrable. If Z admits a Kähler-Einstein metric of positive scalar curvature, we show that it is the Salamon twistor space of a quaternion-Kähler manifold (M^{4n}, g). If Z also admits a second complex contact structure, then Z= CP_{2n+1}. As an application, we give several new characterizations of the Riemannian manifold HP_n=Sp(n+1)/( Sp(n)\times Sp(1)).
