A numerical scheme is developed for solution of the Goursat problem for a class of nonlinear hyperbolic systems with an arbitrary number of independent variables. Convergence results are proved for this difference scheme. These results are applied to hyperbolic systems of differential-geometric origin, like the sine-Gordon equation describing the surfaces of the constant negative Gaussian curvature (K-surfaces). In particular, we prove the convergence of discrete K--surfaces and their Backlund transformations to their continuous counterparts. This puts on a firm basis the generally accepted belief (which however remained unproved untill this work) that the classical differential geometry of integrable classes of surfaces and the classical theory of transformations of such surfaces may be obtained from a unifying multi-dimensional discrete theory by a refinement of the coordinate mesh-size in some of the directions
The paper is devoted to discretization of integral norms of functions from a given finite dimensional subspace. We use recent general results on sampling discretization to derive a new Marcinkiewicz type discretization theorem for the multivariate trigonometric polynomials with frequencies from the hyperbolic crosses. It is shown that recently developed techniques allow us to improve the known results in this direction.
This article deals with a simultaneous abstract evolution equation. This includes a parabolic-hyperbolic phase-field system as an example which consists of a parabolic equation for the relative temperature coupled with a semilinear damped wave equation for the order parameter. Although a time discretization of an initial value problem for an abstract evolution equation has been studied, time discretizations of initial value problems for simultaneous abstract evolution equations seem to be not studied yet. In this paper we focus on a time discretization of a simultaneous abstract evolution equa…
The aim of this paper is to apply a high-order discontinuous-in-time scheme to second-order hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). We first discretize the PDEs in time while keeping the spatial differential operators undiscretized. The well-posedness of this semi-discrete scheme is analyzed and a priori error estimates are derived in the energy norm. We then combine this $hp$-version discontinuous Galerkin method for temporal discretization with an $H^1$-conforming finite element approximation for the spatial variables to construct a fully discrete scheme. A prior error estimates ar…
We present a scalable and efficient iterative solver for high-order hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretizations of hyperbolic partial differential equations. It is an interplay between domain decomposition methods and HDG discretizations. In particular, the method is a fixed-point approach that requires only independent element-by-element local solves in each iteration. As such, it is well-suited for current and future computing systems with massive concurrencies. We rigorously show that the proposed method is exponentially convergent in the number of iterations for transport and l…
We are interested in numerical schemes for the simulation of large scale gas networks. Typical models are based on the isentropic Euler equations with realistic gas constant. The numerical scheme is based on transformation of conservative variables in Riemann invariants and its corresponding numerical dsicretization. A particular, novelty of the proposed method is the possbility to allow for an efficient discretization of the boundary and coupling conditions at nodal points of the network. The original discretization is analysed in view of its property to correctly recover steady states as wel…
In this paper we study the finite element approximation of systems of second-order nonlinear hyperbolic equations. The proposed numerical method combines a $hp$-version discontinuous Galerkin finite element approximation in the time direction with an $H^1(Ω)$-conforming finite element approximation in the spatial variables. Error bounds at the temporal nodal points are derived under a weak restriction on the temporal step size in terms of the spatial mesh size. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the theoretical results.
We introduce a general framework for enforcing local or global maximum principles in high-order space-time discretizations of a scalar hyperbolic conservation law. We begin with sufficient conditions for a space discretization to be bound preserving (BP) and satisfy a semi-discrete maximum principle. Next, we propose a global monolithic convex (GMC) flux limiter which has the structure of a flux-corrected transport (FCT) algorithm but is applicable to spatial semi-discretizations and ensures the BP property of the fully discrete scheme for strong stability preserving (SSP) Runge-Kutta time dis…

This work extends the concepts of algebraic flux correction and convex limiting to continuous high-order Bernstein finite element discretizations of scalar hyperbolic problems. Using an array of adjustable diffusive fluxes, the standard Galerkin approximation is transformed into a nonlinear high-resolution scheme which has the compact sparsity pattern of the piecewise-linear or multilinear subcell discretization. The representation of this scheme in terms of invariant domain preserving states makes it possible to prove the validity of local discrete maximum principles under CFL-like conditions…
The paper describes the construction of entropy-stable discontinuous Galerkin difference (DGD) discretizations for hyperbolic conservation laws on unstructured grids. The construction takes advantage of existing theory for entropy-stable summation-by-parts (SBP) discretizations. In particular, the paper shows how DGD discretizations -- both linear and nonlinear -- can be constructed by defining the SBP trial and test functions in terms of interpolated DGD degrees of freedom. In the case of entropy-stable discretizations, the entropy variables rather than the conservative variables must be inte…
In this work, we modify a continuous Galerkin discretization of a scalar hyperbolic conservation law using new algebraic correction procedures. Discrete entropy conditions are used to determine the minimal amount of entropy stabilization and constrain antidiffusive corrections of a property-preserving low-order scheme. The addition of a second-order entropy dissipative component to the antidiffusive part of a nearly entropy conservative numerical flux is generally insufficient to prevent violations of local bounds in shock regions. Our monolithic convex limiting technique adjusts a given targe…
In this work we present a framework for enforcing discrete maximum principles in discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretizations. The developed schemes are applicable to scalar conservation laws as well as hyperbolic systems. Our methodology for limiting volume terms is similar to recently proposed methods for continuous Galerkin approximations, while DG flux terms require novel stabilization techniques. Piecewise Bernstein polynomials are employed as shape functions for the DG spaces, thus facilitating the use of very high order spatial approximations. We discuss the design of a new, provably inv…
In this paper we deal with an abstract problem which includes the linearized equations of coupled sound and heat flow as an example. Recently, a time discretization of a simultaneous abstract evolution equation applying to some parabolic-hyperbolic phase-field systems has been studied. This paper focuses on a time discretization of an abstract problem applying to the linearized equations of coupled sound and heat flow. Also, this paper gives some parabolic-hyperbolic phase-field systems as examples.
We consider point sources in hyperbolic equations discretized by finite differences. If the source is stationary, appropriate source discretization has been shown to preserve the accuracy of the finite difference method. Moving point sources, however, pose two challenges that do not appear in the stationary case. First, the discrete source must not excite modes that propagate with the source velocity. Second, the discrete source spectrum amplitude must be independent of the source position. We derive a source discretization that meets these requirements and prove design-order convergence of th…
In this paper, we present an energy-preserving exponentially integrable numerical method for stochastic wave equation with cubic nonlinearity and additive noise. We first apply the spectral Galerkin method to discretizing the original equation and show that this spatial discretization possesses an energy evolution law and certain exponential integrability property. Then the exponential integrability property of the exact solution is deduced by proving the strong convergence of the semi-discretization. To propose a full discrete numerical method which could inherit both the energy evolution law…

High-precision numerical scheme for nonlinear hyperbolic evolution equations is proposed based on the spectral method. The detail discretization processes are discussed in case of one-dimensional Klein-Gordon equations. In conclusion, a numerical scheme with the order of total calculation cost $O(N \log 2N)$ is proposed. As benchmark results, the relation between the numerical precision and the discretization unit size are demonstrated.
In this work, we determine the full expression for the global truncation error of hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs). In particular, we use theoretical analysis and symbolic algebra to find exact expressions for the coefficients of the generic global truncation error. Our analysis is valid for any hyperbolic PDE, be it linear or non-linear, and employing finite difference, finite volume, or finite element discretization in space, and advanced in time with a predictor-corrector, multistep, or a deferred correction method, belonging to the Method of Lines. Furthermore, we discuss t…
The methodology proposed in this paper bridges the gap between entropy stable and positivity-preserving discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for nonlinear hyperbolic problems. The entropy stability property and, optionally, preservation of local bounds for the cell averages are enforced using flux limiters based on entropy conditions and discrete maximum principles, respectively. Entropy production by the (limited) gradients of the piecewise-linear DG approximation is constrained using Rusanov-type entropy viscosity, as proposed by Abgrall in the context of nodal finite element approximations. …
