High-precision numerical scheme for nonlinear hyperbolic evolution equations is proposed based on the spectral method. The detail discretization processes are discussed in case of one-dimensional Klein-Gordon equations. In conclusion, a numerical scheme with the order of total calculation cost $O(N \log 2N)$ is proposed. As benchmark results, the relation between the numerical precision and the discretization unit size are demonstrated.

In this paper we study the finite element approximation of systems of second-order nonlinear hyperbolic equations. The proposed numerical method combines a $hp$-version discontinuous Galerkin finite element approximation in the time direction with an $H^1(Ω)$-conforming finite element approximation in the spatial variables. Error bounds at the temporal nodal points are derived under a weak restriction on the temporal step size in terms of the spatial mesh size. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the theoretical results.

We derive entropy conserving and entropy dissipative overlapping domain formulations for systems of nonlinear hyperbolic equations in conservation form, such as would be approximated by overset mesh methods. The entropy conserving formulation imposes two-way coupling at the artificial interface boundaries through nonlinear penalty functions that vanish when the solutions coincide. The penalty functions are expressed in terms of entropy conserving fluxes originally introduced for finite volume schemes. Entropy dissipation and additional coupling in the overlap region are added through the use o…
Classical reduced models are low-rank approximations using a fixed basis designed to achieve dimensionality reduction of large-scale systems. In this work, we introduce reduced deep networks, a generalization of classical reduced models formulated as deep neural networks. We prove depth separation results showing that reduced deep networks approximate solutions of parametrized hyperbolic partial differential equations with approximation error $ε$ with $\mathcal{O}(|\log(ε)|)$ degrees of freedom, even in the nonlinear setting where solutions exhibit shock waves. We also show that classical redu…
In this work, we introduce a novel approach to formulating an artificial viscosity for shock capturing in nonlinear hyperbolic systems by utilizing the property that the solutions of hyperbolic conservation laws are not reversible in time in the vicinity of shocks. The proposed approach does not require any additional governing equations or a priori knowledge of the hyperbolic system in question, is independent of the mesh and approximation order, and requires the use of only one tunable parameter. The primary novelty is that the resulting artificial viscosity is unique for each component of t…
We develop an efficient and convergent numerical method for solving the inverse problem of determining the potential of nonlinear hyperbolic equations from lateral Cauchy data. In our numerical method we construct a sequence of linear Cauchy problems whose corresponding solutions converge to a function that can be used to efficiently compute an approximate solution to the inverse problem of interest. The convergence analysis is established by combining the contraction principle and Carleman estimates. We numerically solve the linear Cauchy problems using a quasi-reversibility method. Numerical…
In this paper we propose new Z-type nonlinear weights of the fifth-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) finite difference scheme for hyperbolic conservation laws. Instead of employing the classical smoothness indicators for the nonlinear weights, we take the $p$th root of the smoothness indicators and follow the form of Z-type nonlinear weights, leading to fifth order accuracy in smooth regions, even at the critical points, and sharper approximations around the discontinuities. We also prove that the proposed nonlinear weights converge to the linear weights as $p \to \infty$, impl…
The weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) methods are popular and effective spatial discretization methods for nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations. Although these methods are formally first-order accurate when a shock is present, they still have uniform high-order accuracy right up to the shock location. In this paper, we propose a novel third-order numerical method for solving optimal control problems subject to scalar nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws. It is based on the first-disretize-then-optimize approach and combines a discrete adjoint WENO scheme of third ord…
This paper addresses the three concepts of \textit{ consistency, stability and convergence } in the context of compact finite volume schemes for systems of nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws. The treatment utilizes the framework of "balance laws". Such laws express the relevant physical conservation laws in the presence of discontinuities. Finite volume approximations employ this viewpoint, and the present paper can be regarded as being in this category. It is first shown that under very mild conditions a weak solution is indeed a solution to the balance law. The schemes considered here al…
Linear models for the radiative transfer equation have been well developed, while nonlinear models are seldom investigated even for slab geometry due to some essential difficulties. We have proposed a moment model in MPN for slab geometry which combines the ideas of the classical PN and MN model. Though the model is far from perfect, it was demonstrated to be quite efficient in numerically approximating the solution of the radiative transfer equation, that we are motivated to further improve this model. Consequently we propose in this paper a new model following the chartmap in MPN with some s…

We introduced the least-squares ReLU neural network (LSNN) method for solving the linear advection-reaction problem with discontinuous solution and showed that the method outperforms mesh-based numerical methods in terms of the number of degrees of freedom. This paper studies the LSNN method for scalar nonlinear hyperbolic conservation law. The method is a discretization of an equivalent least-squares (LS) formulation in the set of neural network functions with the ReLU activation function. Evaluation of the LS functional is done by using numerical integration and conservative finite volume sc…

This paper develops a shock capturing approach for high-order correction procedure via reconstruction (CPR) method with Legendre-Gauss solution points. Shock regions are treated by novel compact nonuniform nonlinear weighted (CNNW) schemes, which have the same solution points as the CPR method. CNNW schemes are constructed by discretizing flux derivatives based on Riemann fluxes at flux points in one cell and using nonuniform nonlinear weighted (NNW) interpolations to obtain the left and right values at flux points. Then, a priori subcell p-adaptive CNNW limiting of the CPR method is proposed …
