In this paper we deal with an abstract problem which includes the linearized equations of coupled sound and heat flow as an example. Recently, a time discretization of a simultaneous abstract evolution equation applying to some parabolic-hyperbolic phase-field systems has been studied. This paper focuses on a time discretization of an abstract problem applying to the linearized equations of coupled sound and heat flow. Also, this paper gives some parabolic-hyperbolic phase-field systems as examples.
This article deals with a simultaneous abstract evolution equation. This includes a parabolic-hyperbolic phase-field system as an example which consists of a parabolic equation for the relative temperature coupled with a semilinear damped wave equation for the order parameter. Although a time discretization of an initial value problem for an abstract evolution equation has been studied, time discretizations of initial value problems for simultaneous abstract evolution equations seem to be not studied yet. In this paper we focus on a time discretization of a simultaneous abstract evolution equa…
We consider the goal-oriented error estimates for a linearized iterative solver for nonlinear partial differential equations. For the adjoint problem and iterative solver we consider, instead of the differentiation of the primal problem, a suitable linearization which guarantees the adjoint consistency of the numerical scheme. We derive error estimates and develop an efficient adaptive algorithm which balances the errors arising from the discretization and use of iterative solvers. Several numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency of this algorithm.
The report is based on an extended abstract for the MFO workshop "Hilbert Complexes: Analysis, Applications, and Discretizations", held at Oberwolfach during 19-25 June 2022. The aim is to provide an overview of some aspects of discretization of Hilbert complexes with an emphasis on conforming finite elements.
We show that the semi-implicit time discretization approaches previously introduced for multilayer shallow water models for the barotropic case can be also applied to the variable density case with Boussinesq approximation. Furthermore, also for the variable density equations, a variable number of layers can be used, so as to achieve greater flexibility and efficiency of the resulting multilayer approach. An analysis of the linearized system, which allows to derive linear stability parameters in simple configurations, and the resulting spatially semi-discretized equations are presented. A numb…
Time discretizations of phase-field systems have been studied. For example, a time discretization and an error estimate for a parabolic-parabolic phase-field system have been studied by Colli--K. [Commun. Pure Appl. Anal. 18 (2019)]. Also, a time discretization and an error estimate for a simultaneous abstract evolution equation applying parabolic-hyperbolic phase field systems and the linearized equations of coupled sound and heat flow have been studied (see K. [ESAIM Math. Model. Numer. Anal.54 (2020), Electron. J. Differential Equations 2020, Paper No. 96]). On the other hand, although exis…
A novel theoretical convergence rate estimate for a Balancing Domain Decomposition by Constraints algorithm is proven for the solution of the cardiac Bidomain model, describing the propagation of the electric impulse in the cardiac tissue. The non-linear system arises from a fully implicit time discretization and a monolithic solution approach. The preconditioned non-symmetric operator is constructed from the linearized system arising within the Newton-Krylov approach for the solution of the non-linear problem; we theoretically analyze and prove a convergence rate bound for the Generalised Min…
We revisit a unified methodology for the iterative solution of nonlinear equations in Hilbert spaces. Our key observation is that the general approach from [Heid & Wihler, Math. Comp. 89 (2020), Calcolo 57 (2020)] satisfies an energy contraction property in the context of (abstract) strongly monotone problems. This property, in turn, is the crucial ingredient in the recent convergence analysis in [Gantner et al., arXiv:2003.10785]. In particular, we deduce that adaptive iterative linearized finite element methods (AILFEMs) lead to full linear convergence with optimal algebraic rates with respe…
We present a scalable and efficient iterative solver for high-order hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretizations of hyperbolic partial differential equations. It is an interplay between domain decomposition methods and HDG discretizations. In particular, the method is a fixed-point approach that requires only independent element-by-element local solves in each iteration. As such, it is well-suited for current and future computing systems with massive concurrencies. We rigorously show that the proposed method is exponentially convergent in the number of iterations for transport and l…
In this note we consider the continuous Galerkin time stepping method of arbitrary order as a possible discretization scheme of nonlinear initial value problems. In addition, we develop and generalize a well known existing result for the discrete solution by applying a general linearizing procedure to the nonlinear discrete scheme including also the simplified Newton solution procedure. In particular, the presented existence results are implied by choosing sufficient small time steps locally. Furthermore, the established existence results are independent of the local approximation order. Moreo…
We present a unified analysis for a family of variational time discretization methods, including discontinuous Galerkin methods and continuous Galerkin-Petrov methods, applied to non-stiff initial value problems. Besides the well-definedness of the methods, the global error and superconvergence properties are analyzed under rather weak abstract assumptions which also allow considerations of a wide variety of quadrature formulas. Numerical experiments illustrate and support the theoretical results.

We revise the structure-preserving finite element method in [K. Hu, Y. MA and J. Xu. (2017) Stable finite element methods preserving $\nabla \cdot \mathbf{B}=0$ exactly for MHD models. Numer. Math.,135, 371-396]. The revised method is semi-implicit in time-discretization. We prove the linearized scheme preserves the divergence free property for the magnetic field exactly at each time step. Further, we showed the linearized scheme is unconditionally stable and we obtain optimal convergence in the energy norm of the revised method even for solutions with low regularity.
Discretization of Navier-Stokes' equations using pressure-robust finite element methods is considered for the high Reynolds number regime. To counter oscillations due to dominating convection we add a stabilization based on a bulk term in the form of a residual-based least squares stabilization of the vorticity equation supplemented by a penalty term on (certain components of) the gradient jump over the elements faces. Since the stabilization is based on the vorticity equation, it is independent of the pressure gradients, which makes it pressure-robust. Thus, we prove pressure-independent erro…
An extension of the two-step staggered time discretization of linear elastodynamics in stress-velocity form to systems involving internal variables subjected to a possibly non-linear dissipative evolution is proposed. The original scheme is thus enhanced by another step for the internal variables which, in general, is implicit, although even this step might be explicit if no spatial gradients of the internal variables are involved. Using an abstract Banach-space formulation, a-priori estimates and convergence are proved under a CFL condition. The developed three-step scheme finds applications …
An error estimate for a canonical discretization of the harmonic map heat flow into spheres is derived. The numerical scheme uses standard finite elements with a nodal treatment of linearized unit-length constraints. The analysis is based on elementary approximation results and only uses the discrete weak formulation.
An abstract framework is developed that enables the analysis of algebraically stabilized discretizations in a unified way. This framework is applied to a discretization of this kind for convection-diffusion-reaction equations. The definition of this scheme contains a new limiter that improves a standard one in such a way that local and global discrete maximum principles are satisfied on arbitrary simplicial meshes.
A wide variety of (fixed-point) iterative methods for the solution of nonlinear equations (in Hilbert spaces) exists. In many cases, such schemes can be interpreted as iterative local linearization methods, which, as will be shown, can be obtained by applying a suitable preconditioning operator to the original (nonlinear) equation. Based on this observation, we will derive a unified abstract framework which recovers some prominent iterative schemes. In particular, for Lipschitz continuous and strongly monotone operators, we derive a general convergence analysis. Furthermore, in the context of …
We investigate structure-preserving finite element discretizations of the steady-state Stefan--Maxwell diffusion problem which governs diffusion within a phase consisting of multiple species. An approach inspired by augmented Lagrangian methods allows us to construct a symmetric positive definite augmented Onsager transport matrix, which in turn leads to an effective numerical algorithm. We prove inf-sup conditions for the continuous and discrete linearized systems and obtain error estimates for a phase consisting of an arbitrary number of species. The discretization preserves the thermodynami…
