Time discretizations of phase-field systems have been studied. For example, a time discretization and an error estimate for a parabolic-parabolic phase-field system have been studied by Colli--K. [Commun. Pure Appl. Anal. 18 (2019)]. Also, a time discretization and an error estimate for a simultaneous abstract evolution equation applying parabolic-hyperbolic phase field systems and the linearized equations of coupled sound and heat flow have been studied (see K. [ESAIM Math. Model. Numer. Anal.54 (2020), Electron. J. Differential Equations 2020, Paper No. 96]). On the other hand, although existence, continuous dependence estimates and behavior of solutions to nonlocal phase-field systems with inertial terms have been studied by Grasselli--Petzeltová--Schimperna [Quart. Appl. Math. 65 (2007)], time discretizations of these systems seem to be not studied yet. In this paper we focus on employing a time discretization scheme for a nonlocal phase-field system with inertial term and establishing an error estimate for the difference between continuous and discrete solutions.
In this paper we design efficient quadrature rules for finite element discretizations of nonlocal diffusion problems with compactly supported kernel functions. Two of the main challenges in nonlocal modeling and simulations are the prohibitive computational cost and the nontrivial implementation of discretization schemes, especially in three-dimensional settings. In this work we circumvent both challenges by introducing a parametrized mollifying function that improves the regularity of the integrand, utilizing an adaptive integration technique, and exploiting parallelization. We first show tha…
We propose a domain decomposition method for the efficient simulation of nonlocal problems. Our approach is based on a multi-domain formulation of a nonlocal diffusion problem where the subdomains share "nonlocal" interfaces of the size of the nonlocal horizon. This system of nonlocal equations is first rewritten in terms of minimization of a nonlocal energy, then discretized with a meshfree approximation and finally solved via a Lagrange multiplier approach in a way that resembles the finite element tearing and interconnect method. Specifically, we propose a distributed projected gradient alg…

In this paper, we propose and analyze a finite element discretization for the computation of fractional minimal graphs of order~$s \in (0,1/2)$ on a bounded domain $Ω$. Such a Plateau problem of order $s$ can be reinterpreted as a Dirichlet problem for a nonlocal, nonlinear, degenerate operator of order $s + 1/2$. We prove that our numerical scheme converges in $W^{2r}_1(Ω)$ for all $r<s$, where $W^{2s}_1(Ω)$ is closely related to the natural energy space. Moreover, we introduce a geometric notion of error that, for any pair of $H^1$ functions, in the limit $s \to 1/2$ recovers a weighted $L^2…
This paper considers numerical discretization of a nonlocal conservation law modeling vehicular traffic flows involving nonlocal inter-vehicle interactions. The nonlocal model involves an integral over the range measured by a horizon parameter and it recovers the local Lighthill-Richards-Whitham model as the nonlocal horizon parameter goes to zero. Good numerical schemes for simulating these parameterized nonlocal traffic flow models should be robust with respect to the change of the model parameters but this has not been systematically investigated in the literature. We fill this gap through …
In this paper, we consider a class of convection-diffusion equations with memory effects. These equations arise as a result of homogenization or upscaling of linear transport equations in heterogeneous media and play an important role in many applications. First, we present a dememorization technique for these equations. We show that the convection-diffusion equations with memory effects can be written as a system of standard convection-diffusion-reaction equations. This allows removing the memory term and simplifying the computations. We consider a relation between dememorized equations and m…
Casting nonlocal problems in variational form and discretizing them with the finite element (FE) method facilitates the use of nonlocal vector calculus to prove well-posedeness, convergence, and stability of such schemes. Employing an FE method also facilitates meshing of complicated domain geometries and coupling with FE methods for local problems. However, nonlocal weak problems involve the computation of a double-integral, which is computationally expensive and presents several challenges. In particular, the inner integral of the variational form associated with the stiffness matrix is defi…
In this paper, we study the Crank-Nicolson method for temporal dimension and the piecewise quadratic polynomial collocation method for spatial dimensions of time-dependent nonlocal problems. The new theoretical results of such discretization are that the proposed numerical method is unconditionally stable and its global truncation error is of $\mathcal{O}\left(τ^2+h^{4-γ}\right)$ with $0<γ<1$, where $τ$ and $h$ are the discretization sizes in the temporal and spatial dimensions respectively. Also we develop the conjugate gradient squared method to solving the resulting discretized nonsymmetric…
Based on a nonlocal Laplacian operator, a novel edge detection method of the grayscale image is proposed in this paper. This operator utilizes the information of neighbor pixels for a given pixel to obtain effective and delicate edge detection. The nonlocal edge detection method is used as an initialization for solving the Allen-Cahn equation to achieve two-phase segmentation of the grayscale image. Efficient exponential time differencing (ETD) solvers are employed in the time integration, and finite difference method is adopted in space discretization. The maximum bound principle and energy s…
In this paper, we study a second-order accurate and linear numerical scheme for the nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard equation. The scheme is established by combining a modified Crank-Nicolson approximation and the Adams-Bashforth extrapolation for the temporal discretization, and by applying the Fourier spectral collocation to the spatial discretization. In addition, two stabilization terms in different forms are added for the sake of the numerical stability. We conduct a complete convergence analysis by using the higher-order consistency estimate for the numerical scheme, combined with the rough error …
We provide optimal order pressure error estimates for the Crank-Nicolson semidiscretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Second order estimates for the velocity error are long known, we prove that the pressure error is of the same order if considered at interval midpoints, confirming previous numerical evidence. For simplicity we first give a proof under high regularity assumptions that include nonlocal compatibility conditions for the initial data, then use smoothing techniques for a proof under reduced assumptions based on standard local conditions only.
In this paper, a numerical scheme for a nonlinear McKendrick-von Foerster equation with diffusion in age (MV-D) with the Dirichlet boundary condition is proposed. The main idea to derive the scheme is to use the discretization based on the method of characteristics to the convection part, and the finite difference method to the rest of the terms. The nonlocal terms are dealt with the quadrature methods. As a result, an implicit scheme is obtained for the boundary value problem under consideration. The consistency and the convergence of the proposed numerical scheme is established. Moreover, nu…
We analyse a splitting integrator for the time discretization of the Schrödinger equation with nonlocal interaction cubic nonlinearity and white noise dispersion. We prove that this time integrator has order of convergence one in the $p$-th mean sense, for any $p\geq1$ in some Sobolev spaces. We prove that the splitting schemes preserves the $L^2$-norm, which is a crucial property for the proof of the strong convergence result. Finally, numerical experiments illustrate the performance of the proposed numerical scheme.
Peridynamics is a nonlocal theory for dynamic fracture analysis consisting in a second order in time partial integro-differential equation. In this paper, we consider a nonlinear model of peridynamics in a two-dimensional spatial domain. We implement a spectral method for the space discretization based on the Fourier expansion of the solution while we consider the Newmark-$β$ method for the time marching. This computational approach takes advantages from the convolutional form of the peridynamic operator and from the use of the discrete Fourier transform. We show a convergence result for the f…
We propose an efficient solution approach for high-dimensional nonlocal mean-field game (MFG) systems based on the Monte Carlo approximation of interaction kernels via random features. We avoid costly space-discretizations of interaction terms in the state-space by passing to the feature-space. This approach allows for a seamless mean-field extension of virtually any single-agent trajectory optimization algorithm. Here, we extend the direct transcription approach in optimal control to the mean-field setting. We demonstrate the efficiency of our method by solving MFG problems in high-dimensiona…

A nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard model with a nonsmooth potential of double-well obstacle type that promotes sharp interfaces in the solution is presented. To capture long-range interactions between particles, a nonlocal Ginzburg-Landau energy functional is defined which recovers the classical (local) model for vanishing nonlocal interactions. In contrast to the local Cahn-Hilliard problem that always leads to diffuse interfaces, the proposed nonlocal model can lead to a strict separation into pure phases of the substance. Here, the lack of smoothness of the potential is essential to guarantee the afo…
A class of evolution equations with nonlocal diffusion is considered in this work. These are integro-differential equations arising as models of propagation phenomena in continuum media with nonlocal interactions including neural tissue, porous media flow, peridynamics, models with fractional diffusion, as well as continuum limits of interacting dynamical systems. The principal challenge of numerical integration of nonlocal systems stems from the lack of spatial regularity of the data and solutions intrinsic to nonlocal models. To overcome this problem we propose a semidiscrete numerical schem…
