We consider a sequence of Dirichlet problems in varying domains (or, more generally, of relaxed Dirichlet problems involving measures in M_0) for second order linear elliptic operators in divergence form with varying matrices of coefficients. When the matrices H-converge to a matrix A^0, we prove that there exist a subsequence and a measure mu^0 in M_0 such that the limit problem is the relaxed Dirichlet problem corresponding to A^0 and mu^0. We also prove a corrector result which provides an explicit approximation of the solutions in the H^1-norm, and which is obtained by multiplying the corrector for the H-converging matrices by some special test function which depends both on the varying matrices and on the varying domains.
This paper deals with the limit behaviour of the solutions of quasi-linear equations of the form \ $\ds -\limfunc{div}\left(a\left(x, x/{\varepsilon _h},Du_h\right)\right)=f_h$ on $Ω$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The sequence $(\varepsilon _h)$ tends to $0$ and the map $a(x,y,ξ)$ is periodic in $y$, monotone in $ξ$ and satisfies suitable continuity conditions. It is proved that $u_h\rightarrow u$ weakly in $H_0^{1,2}(Ω)$, where $u$ is the solution of a homogenized problem \ $-\limfunc{div}(b(x,Du))=f$ on $Ω$. We also prove some corrector results, i.e. we find $(P_h)$ such that $Du_h-P_h…
For a family of second-order elliptic operators with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, we study the asymptotic behavior of the Green and Neumann functions, using Dirichlet and Neumann correctors. As a result we obtain asymptotic expansions of Poisson kernels and the Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps as well as near optimal convergence rates in $W^{1,p}$ for solutions with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions.
In this paper we study homogenization of quasi-linear partial differential equations of the form $-\mbox{div}\left( a\left( x,x/\varepsilon _h,Du_h\right) \right) =f_h$ on $Ω$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Here the sequence $\left( \varepsilon _h\right) $ tends to $0$ as $h\rightarrow \infty $ and the map $a\left( x,y,ξ\right) $ is periodic in $y,$ monotone in $ξ$ and satisfies suitable continuity conditions. We prove that $u_h\rightarrow u$ weakly in $W_0^{1,p}\left( Ω\right) $ as $h\rightarrow \infty ,$ where $u$ is the solution of a homogenized problem of the form $-\mbox{div}\left( b…
This work is a continuation of [E. Bonnetier, D.Bresch, V. Milisic, submitted]; it deals with rough boundaries in the simplified context of a Poisson equation. We impose Dirichlet boundary conditions on the periodic microscopic perturbation of a flat edge on one side and natural homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions are applied on the inlet/outlet of the domain. To prevent oscillations on the Neumann-like boundaries, we introduce a microscopic vertical corrector defined in a rough quarter-plane. In [E. Bonnetier, D.Bresch, V. Milisic, submitted] we studied a priori estimates in this setting;…
We revisit the periodic homogenization of Dirichlet problems for the Laplace operator in perforated domains, and establish a unified proof that works for different regimes of hole-cell ratios, that is the ratio between the scaling factor of the holes and that of the periodic cells. The approach is then made quantitative and it yields correctors and error estimates for vanishing hole-cell ratios. For positive volume fraction of holes, the approach is just the standard oscillating test function method; for vanishing volume fraction of holes, we study asymptotic behaviors of a properly rescaled c…
Let $\mathcal{O} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ be a bounded domain of class $C^2$. In the Hilbert space $L_2(\mathcal{O};\mathbb{C}^n)$, we consider a matrix elliptic second order differential operator $\mathcal{A}_{D,\varepsilon}$ with the Dirichlet boundary condition. Here $\varepsilon>0$ is the small parameter. The coefficients of the operator are periodic and depend on $\mathbf{x}/\varepsilon$. We find approximation of the operator $\mathcal{A}_{D,\varepsilon}^{-1}$ in the norm of operators acting from $L_2(\mathcal{O};\mathbb{C}^n)$ to the Sobolev space $H^1(\mathcal{O};\mathbb{C}^n)$ with an err…
In this contribution we are interested in the quantitative homogenization properties of linear elliptic equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary data in polygonal domains with corners. To begin our study of this situation, we consider the setting of an angular sector in 2 dimensions : Unlike in the whole-space, on such a sector there exist non-smooth harmonic functions (these depend on the angle of the sector). Here, we construct extended homogenization correctors corresponding to these harmonic functions and prove growth estimates for these which are quasi-optimal, namely optimal up to a…
In this work, we present a new solution representation for the Helmholtz transmission problem in a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with a thin and periodic layer of finite length. The layer may consists of a periodic pertubation of the material coefficients or it is a wall modelled by boundary conditions with an periodic array of small perforations. We consider the periodicity in the layer as the small variable $δ$ and the thickness of the layer to be at the same order. Moreover we assume the thin layer to terminate at re-entrant corners leading to a singular behaviour in the asymptotic expan…
In $L_2(\mathbb{R}^d;\mathbb{C}^n)$, consider a self-adjoint matrix second order elliptic differential operator $\mathcal{B}_\varepsilon$, $0<\varepsilon \leqslant 1$. The principal part of the operator is given in a factorised form, the operator contains first and zero order terms. The operator $\mathcal{B}_\varepsilon$ is positive definite, its coefficients are periodic and depend on $\mathbf{x}/\varepsilon$. We study the behaviour in the small period limit of the operator exponential $e^{-\mathcal{B}_\varepsilon t}$, $t\geqslant 0$. The approximation in the $(L_2\rightarrow L_2)$-operator n…
This paper is devoted to the asymptotic analysis of boundary layers in periodic homogenization. We investigate the behaviour of the boundary layer corrector, defined in the half-space $Ω_{n,a}:=\{y\cdot n-a>0\}$, far away from the boundary and prove the convergence towards a constant vector field, the boundary layer tail. This problem happens to depend strongly on the way the boundary $\partialΩ_{n,a}$ intersects the underlying microstructure. Our study complements the previous results obtained on the one hand for $n\in\mathbb R\mathbb Q^d$, and on the other hand for $n\notin\mathbb R\mathbb Q…
We study large time behaviour of solutions of the Cauchy problem for equations of the form $\partial_tu-L u+λu=f(x,u)+g(x,u)\cdotμ$, where $L$ is the operator associated with a regular lower bounded semi-Dirichlet form ${\mathcal{E}}$ and $μ$ is a nonnegative bounded smooth measure with respect to the capacity determined by ${\mathcal{E}}$. We show that under the monotonicity and some integrability assumptions on $f,g$ as well as some assumptions on the form ${\mathcal{E}}$, $u(t,x)\rightarrow v(x)$ as $t\rightarrow\infty$ for quasi-every $x$, where $v$ is a solution of some elliptic equation …
For a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 3$, we consider the fast diffusion equation with critical sobolev exponent $$\frac{\partial w}{\partialτ} =Δw^{\frac{n-2}{n+2}}$$ under Dirichlet boundary condition $w(\cdot, τ) = 0$ on $\partialΩ$. Using the parabolic gluing method, we prove existence of an initial data $w_0$ such that the corresponding solution has extinction rate of the form $$\|w(\cdot, τ)\|_{L^\infty(Ω)} = γ_0(T-τ)^{\frac{n+2}{4}}\left|\ln(T-τ)\right|^{\frac{n+2}{2(n-2)}}(1+o(1))$$ as $t\to T^-$, here $T > 0$ is the finite extinction time of $w(x, τ)$. This gene…
We consider a magnetic Schroedinger operator in a planar infinite strip with frequently and non-periodically alternating Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions. Assuming that the homogenized boundary condition is the Dirichlet or the Robin one, we establish the uniform resolvent convergence in various operator norms and we prove the estimates for the rates of convergence. It is shown that these estimates can be improved by using special boundary correctors. In the case of periodic alternation, pure Laplacian, and the homogenized Robin boundary condition, we construct two-terms asymptotics for…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to Dirichlet problems in perforated domains for nonlinear elliptic equations associated with monotone operators. The main difference with respect to the previous papers on this subject is that no uniformity is assumed in the monotonicity condition. Under a very general hypothesis on the holes of the domains, we construct a limit equation, which is satisfied by the weak limits of the solutions. The additional term in the limit problem depends only on the local behaviour of the holes, which can be expressed in terms of suitable nonlinear capacities …
Stents are medical devices designed to modify blood flow in aneurysm sacs, in order to prevent their rupture. Some of them can be considered as a locally periodic rough boundary. In order to approximate blood flow in arteries and vessels of the cardio-vascular system containing stents, we use multi-scale techniques to construct boundary layers and wall laws. Simplifying the flow we turn to consider a 2-dimensional Poisson problem that conserves essential features related to the rough boundary. Then, we investigate convergence of boundary layer approximations and the corresponding wall laws in …
We deal with the sharp asymptotic behaviour of eigenvalues of elliptic operators with varying mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. In case of simple eigenvalues, we compute explicitly the constant appearing in front of the expansion's leading term. This allows inferring some remarkable consequences for Aharonov-Bohm eigenvalues when the singular part of the operator has two coalescing poles.
We obtain sharp convergence rates, using Dirichlet correctors, for solutions of wave equations in a bounded domain with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients. The results are used to prove the exact boundary controllability that is uniform in $ε$ - the scale of the microstructure, for the projection of solutions to the subspace generated by the eigenfunctions with eigenvalues less that $Cε^{-1/2}$.
We study the Poisson equation in a perforated domain with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The size of the perforations is denoted by $ε$ > 0, and is proportional to the distance between neighbouring perforations. In the periodic case, the homogenized problem (obtained in the limit $ε$ $\rightarrow$ 0) is well understood (see [21]). We extend these results to a non-periodic case which is defined as a localized deformation of the periodic setting. We propose geometric assumptions that make precise this setting, and we prove results which extend those of the periodic case: existence of…
We consider Dirichlet heat kernel $p_a^{(μ)}(t,x,y)$ for the Bessel differential operator $L^{(μ)}=\frac{d^2}{dx^2}+\frac{2μ+1}{2x}$, $μ\in\mathbb{R}$, in half-line $(a,\infty)$, $a>0$, and provide its asymptotic expansions for $xy/t\rightarrow\infty$.
We study the Neumann and Dirichlet problems for the total variation flow in metric measure spaces. We prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and study their asymptotic behaviour. Furthermore, in the Neumann problem we provide a notion of solutions which is valid for $L^1$ initial data, as well as prove their existence and uniqueness. Our main tools are the first-order linear differential structure due to Gigli and a version of the Gauss-Green formula.
We consider the heat equation in a straight strip, subject to a combination of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We show that a switch of the respective boundary conditions leads to an improvement of the decay rate of the heat semigroup of the order of $t^{-1/2}$. The proof employs similarity variables that lead to a non-autonomous parabolic equation in a thin strip contracting to the real line, that can be analyzed on weighted Sobolev spaces in which the operators under consideration have discrete spectra. A careful analysis of its asymptotic behaviour shows that an added Dirichlet b…
We consider a bounded connected open set $Ω\subset {\rm R}^d$ whose boundary $Γ$ has a finite $(d-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. Then we define the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator $D_0$ on $L_2(Γ)$ by form methods. The operator $-D_0$ is self-adjoint and generates a contractive $C_0$-semigroup $S = (S_t)_{t > 0}$ on $L_2(Γ)$. We show that the asymptotic behaviour of $S_t$ as $t \to \infty$ is related to properties of the trace of functions in $H^1(Ω)$ which $Ω$ may or may not have.
We show that the boundary behaviour of solutions to nonlocal fractional equations posed in bounded domains strongly differs from the one of solutions to elliptic problems modelled upon the Laplace-Poisson equation with zero boundary data. In this classical case it is known that, at least in a suitable weak sense, solutions of non-homogeneous Dirichlet problem are unique and tend to zero at the boundary. Limits of these solutions then produce solutions of some non-homogeneous Dirichlet problem as the interior data concentrate suitably to the boundary. Here, we show that such results are false f…
In this work we consider the homogeneous Neumann eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian on a bounded Lipschitz domain and a singular perturbation of it, which consists in prescribing zero Dirichlet boundary conditions on a small subset of the boundary. We first describe the sharp asymptotic behaviour of a perturbed eigenvalue, in the case in which it is converging to a simple eigenvalue of the limit Neumann problem. The first term in the asymptotic expansion turns out to depend on the Sobolev capacity of the subset where the perturbed eigenfunction is vanishing. Then we focus on the case of Diri…
In this paper we firstly study the limit of minimizers of the fractional $W^{s,p}$-norms as $p\rightarrow+\infty$ in De Giorgi sense. In particular, we analyzed the $Γ$-convergence of non-homogeneous Dirichlet boundary problem for fractional $p$-Laplacian in this approximation process, and proved that as $p\rightarrow+\infty$ the minimizers of fractional $p$-Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary $Γ$-converges to a minimizer of Hölder $\infty$-Laplacian under the same Dirichlet boundary condition. On the other hand, we first investigate the asymptotic behaviour of non-homogeneous fractional $p$-fun…
We prove some uniform and pointwise gradient estimates for the Dirichlet and the Neumann evolution operators $G_{\mathcal{D}}(t,s)$ and $G_{\mathcal{N}}(t,s)$ associated with a class of nonautonomous elliptic operators $\A(t)$ with unbounded coefficients defined in $I\times \Rd_+$ (where $I$ is a right-halfline or $I=\R$). We also prove the existence and the uniqueness of a tight evolution system of measures $\{μ_t^{\mathcal{N}}\}_{t \in I}$ associated with $G_{\mathcal{N}}(t,s)$, which turns out to be sub-invariant for $G_{\mathcal{D}}(t,s)$, and we study the asymptotic behaviour of the evolu…
We study the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for the doubly nonlinear equation $u_t = Δ_p u^m$, where $p>1,\ m>0$ posed in a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with homogeneous boundary conditions and with non-negative and integrable data. In this paper we consider the degenerate case $m(p-1)>1$ and the quasilinear case $m(p-1)=1$. We establish the large-time behaviour by proving the uniform convergence to a unique asymptotic profile and we also give rates for this convergence.
We study the Dirichlet boundary value problem for viscoelastic diffusion in polymers. We show that its weak solutions generate a dissipative semiflow. We construct the minimal trajectory attractor and the global attractor for this problem.
Depending of the geometry of the domain, one can define --at least-- three different Stokes operators with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We describe how the resolvents of these Stokes operators converge with respect to a converging sequence of domains.
We consider a model of fractional diffusion involving the natural nonlocal version of the $p$-Laplacian operator. We study the Dirichlet problem posed in a bounded domain $Ω$ of ${\mathbb{R}}^N$ with zero data outside of $Ω$, for which the existence and uniqueness of strong nonnegative solutions is proved, and a number of quantitative properties are established. A main objective is proving the existence of a special separate variable solution $U(x,t)=t^{-1/(p-2)}F(x)$, called the friendly giant, which produces a universal upper bound and explains the large-time behaviour of all nontrivial nonn…
We study semilinear problems in bounded $C^{1,1}$ domains for non-local operators with a boundary condition. The operators cover and extend the case of the spectral fractional Laplacian. We also study harmonic functions with respect to the non-local operator and boundary behaviour of Green and Poisson potentials.
We investigate a Dirichlet problem for the Laplace equation in a domain of $\mathbb{R}^2$ with two small close holes. The domain is obtained by making in a bounded open set two perforations at distance $|ε_1|$ one from the other and each one of size $|ε_1ε_2|$. In such a domain, we introduce a Dirichlet problem and we denote by $u_{ε_1,ε_2}$ its solution. We show that the dependence of $u_{ε_1,ε_2}$ upon $(ε_1,ε_2)$ can be described in terms of real analytic maps of the pair $(ε_1,ε_2)$ defined in an open neighborhood of $(0,0)$ and of logarithmic functions of $ε_1$ and $ε_2$. Then we study th…
We construct pullback attractors to the weak solutions of the three-dimensional Dirichlet problem for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the case when the external force may become unbounded as time goes to plus or minus infinity.
As the main problem, the bi-Laplace equation $Δ^2u=0 (Δ=D_x^2+D_y^2)$ in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \re^2$, with inhomogeneous Dirichlet or Navier-type conditions on the smooth boundary $\partial Ω$ is considered. In addition, there is a finite collection of curves $$Γ= Γ_1\cup...\cupΓ_m \subset Ω, \quad \mbox{on which we assume homogeneous Dirichlet} \quad u=0,$$ focusing at the origin $0 \in Ω$ (the analysis would be similar for any other point). This makes the above elliptic problem overdetermined. Possible types of the behaviour of solution $u(x,y)$ at the tip $0$ of such admissible multip…
It is shown that the theory of real symmetric second-order elliptic operators in divergence form on $\Ri^d$ can be formulated in terms of a regular strongly local Dirichlet form irregardless of the order of degeneracy. The behaviour of the corresponding evolution semigroup $S_t$ can be described in terms of a function $(A,B) \mapsto d(A ;B)\in[0,\infty]$ over pairs of measurable subsets of $\Ri^d$. Then \[ |(ϕ_A,S_tϕ_B)|\leq e^{-d(A;B)^2(4t)^{-1}}\|ϕ_A\|_2\|ϕ_B\|_2 \] for all $t>0$ and all $ϕ_A\in L_2(A)$, $ϕ_B\in L_2(B)$. Moreover $S_tL_2(A)\subseteq L_2(A)$ for all $t>0$ if and only if $d(A …
We first establish a sharp relation between the order of vanishing of a Dirichlet eigenfunction at a point and the leading term of the asymptotic expansion of the Dirichlet eigenvalue variation, as a removed compact set concentrates at that point. Then we apply this spectral stability result to the study of the asymptotic behaviour of eigenvalues of Aharonov-Bohm operators with two colliding poles moving on an axis of symmetry of the domain.
We provide general lower and upper bounds for Laplace Dirichlet heat kernel of convex $\mathcal C^{1,1}$ domains. The obtained estimates precisely describe the exponential behaviour of the kernels, which has been known only in a few special cases so far. Furthermore, we characterize a class of sets for which the estimates are sharp, i.e. the upper and lower bounds coincide up to a multiplicative constant. In particular, this includes sets of the form $\{x\in \R^n: x_n>a|(x_1,...,x_{n-1})|^p\}$ where $p\geq2$, $n\geq2 $ and $a>0$.
We study a nonlinear porous medium type equation involving the infinity Laplacian operator. We first consider the problem posed on a bounded domain and prove existence of maximal nonnegative viscosity solutions. Uniqueness is obtained for strictly positive solutions with Lipschitz in time data. We also describe the asymptotic behaviour for the Dirichlet problem in the class of maximal solutions. We then discuss the Cauchy problem posed in the whole space. As in the standard porous medium equation (PME), solutions which start with compact support exhibit a free boundary propagating with finite …
We study the behaviour of the minimal solution to the Gelfand problem on a spherical cap under the Dirichlet boundary conditions. The asymptotic behaviour of the solution is discussed as the cap approaches the whole sphere. The results are based on the sharp estimate of the torsion function of the spherical cap in terms of the principle eigenvalue which we derive in this work.
We investigate quantitative properties of nonnegative solutions $u(x)\ge 0$ to the semilinear diffusion equation $\mathcal{L} u= f(u)$, posed in a bounded domain $Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^N$ with appropriate homogeneous Dirichlet or outer boundary conditions. The operator $\mathcal{L}$ may belong to a quite general class of linear operators that include the standard Laplacian, the two most common definitions of the fractional Laplacian $(-Δ)^s$ ($0<s<1$) in a bounded domain with zero Dirichlet conditions, and a number of other nonlocal versions. The nonlinearity $f$ is increasing and looks like a …
The paper is concerned with the interconnection of the boundary behaviour of the solutions of the exterior Dirichlet and Neumann problems of harmonic analysis for the three-dimensional unit ball with the corresponding behaviour of the associated ergodic inverse problems for the punched unlimited space. The basis is the theory of semigroups of linear operators mapping a Banach space $X$ into itself. The rates of approximation play a basic role. Another tool is a Drazin-like inverse operator $B$ for the infinitesimal generator $A$ of a semigroup that arises naturally in ergodic theory. This oper…
We investigate the dependence of optimal constants in Poincaré- Sobolev inequalities of planar domains on the region where the Dirichlet condition is imposed. More precisely, we look for the best Dirichlet regions, among closed and connected sets with prescribed total length $L$ (one-dimensional Hausdorff measure), that make these constants as small as possible. We study their limiting behaviour, showing, in particular, that Dirichler regions homogenize inside the domain with comb-shaped structures, periodically distribuited at different scales and with different orientations. To keep track of…
In this work, we consider the fractional Stefan-type problem in a Lipschitz bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ with time-dependent Dirichlet boundary condition for the temperature $\vartheta=\vartheta(x,t)$, $\vartheta=g$ on $Ω^c\times]0,T[$, and initial condition $η_0$ for the enthalpy $η=η(x,t)$, given in $Ω\times]0,T[$ by \[\frac{\partial η}{\partial t} +\mathcal{L}_A^s \vartheta= f\quad\text{ with }η\in β(\vartheta),\] where $\mathcal{L}_A^s$ is an anisotropic fractional operator defined in the distributional sense by \[\langle\mathcal{L}_A^su,v\rangle=\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}AD^su\cdot D^sv…
We consider the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the Dirichlet boundary condition in an exterior domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\geq2$. We compare the long-time behaviour of solutions to this initial-boundary value problem with the long-time behaviour of solutions of the analogous Cauchy problem in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^n$. We find that the long-time asymptotics of solutions to both problems coincide either in the case of small initial data in the weak $L^{n}$-space or for a certain class of large initial data.
In this paper, we consider the optimization problem for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue $λ_1(Ω)$ of the $p$-Laplacian $Δ_p$, $1< p< \infty$, over a family of doubly connected planar domains $Ω= B \setminus \overline{P}$, where $B$ is an open disk and $P\subsetneq B$ is a domain which is invariant under the action of a dihedral group $\mathbb{D}_n$ for some $n \geq 2,\;n\in \mathbb{N}$. We study the behaviour of $λ_1$ with respect to the rotations of $P$ about its center. We prove that the extremal configurations correspond to the cases where $Ω$ is symmetric with respect to the line containing …
We establish the short-time asymptotic behaviour of the Markovian semigroups associated with strongly local Dirichlet forms under very general hypotheses. Our results apply to a wide class of strongly elliptic, subelliptic and degenerate elliptic operators. In the degenerate case the asymptotics incorporate possible non-ergodicity.
