In this paper we study homogenization of quasi-linear partial differential equations of the form $-\mbox{div}\left( a\left( x,x/\varepsilon _h,Du_h\right) \right) =f_h$ on $Ω$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Here the sequence $\left( \varepsilon _h\right) $ tends to $0$ as $h\rightarrow \infty $ and the map $a\left( x,y,ξ\right) $ is periodic in $y,$ monotone in $ξ$ and satisfies suitable continuity conditions. We prove that $u_h\rightarrow u$ weakly in $W_0^{1,p}\left( Ω\right) $ as $h\rightarrow \infty ,$ where $u$ is the solution of a homogenized problem of the form $-\mbox{div}\left( b\left( x,Du\right) \right) =f$ on $Ω.$ We also derive an explicit expression for the homogenized operator $b$ and prove some corrector results, i.e. we find $\left( P_h\right) $ such that $Du_h-P_h\left( Du\right) \rightarrow 0$ in $L^p\left( Ω, \mathbf{R}^n\right)$.
In the homogenization of monotone parabolic partial differential equations with oscillations in both the space and time variables the gradients converges only weakly in $L^p$. In the present paper we construct a family of correctors, such that, up to a remainder which converges to zero strongly in $L^p$, we obtain strong convergence of the gradients in $L^p$.
This paper deals with the limit behaviour of the solutions of quasi-linear equations of the form \ $\ds -\limfunc{div}\left(a\left(x, x/{\varepsilon _h},Du_h\right)\right)=f_h$ on $Ω$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The sequence $(\varepsilon _h)$ tends to $0$ and the map $a(x,y,ξ)$ is periodic in $y$, monotone in $ξ$ and satisfies suitable continuity conditions. It is proved that $u_h\rightarrow u$ weakly in $H_0^{1,2}(Ω)$, where $u$ is the solution of a homogenized problem \ $-\limfunc{div}(b(x,Du))=f$ on $Ω$. We also prove some corrector results, i.e. we find $(P_h)$ such that $Du_h-P_h…
The present paper concerns a space-time homogenization problem for nonlinear diffusion equations with periodically oscillating (in space and time) coefficients. Main results consist of corrector results (i.e., strong convergences of solutions with corrector terms) for gradients, diffusion fluxes and time-derivatives without assumptions for smoothness of coefficients. Proofs of the main results are based on the space-time version of the unfolding method, which is deeply concerned with the strong two-scale convergence theory.
Corrector estimates constitute a key ingredient in the derivation of optimal convergence rates via two-scale expansion techniques in homogenization theory of random uniformly elliptic equations. The present work follows up - in terms of corrector estimates - on the recent work of Fischer and Neukamm (arXiv:1908.02273) which provides a quantitative stochastic homogenization theory of nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations under a spectral gap assumption. We establish optimal-order estimates (with respect to the scaling in the ratio between the microscopic and the macroscopic scale) for higher-o…
This article is concerned with uniform $C^{1,α}$ and $C^{1,1}$ estimates in periodic homogenization of fully nonlinear elliptic equations. The analysis is based on the compactness method, which involves linearization of the operator at each approximation step. Due to the nonlinearity of the equations, the linearized operators involve the Hessian of correctors, which appear in the previous step. The involvement of the Hessian of the correctors deteriorates the regularity of the linearized operator, and sometimes even changes its oscillating pattern. These issues are resolved with new approximat…
Aim of this paper is to extend the continuous dependence estimates proved in \cite{JK1} to quasi-monotone systems of fully nonlinear second-order parabolic equations. As by-product of these estimates, we get an Hölder estimate for bounded solutions of systems and a rate of convergence estimate for the vanishing viscosity approximation. In the second part of the paper we employ similar techniques to study the periodic homogenization of quasi-monotone systems of fully nonlinear second-order uniformly parabolic equations. Finally, some examples are discussed.
We study the vanishing discount problem for a nonlinear monotone system of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. This continues the first author's investigation on the vanishing discount problem for a monotone system of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. As in Part 1, we introduce by the convex duality Mather measures and their analogues for the system, which we call respectively Mather and Green-Poisson measures, and prove a convergence theorem for the vanishing discount problem. Moreover, we establish an existence result for the ergodic problem.
Some results about existence, uniqueness, and attractive behaviour of solutions for nonlinear Volterra integral equations with non-convolution kernels are presented in this paper. These results are based on similar ones about nonlinear Volterra integral equations with convolution kernels and some comparison techniques. Therefore, this paper is devoted to find a wide class of nonconvolution Volterra integral equations where their solutions behave like those of Volterra equations with convolution kernels.
This work is devoted to the construction of weakly nonlinear, highly oscillating, current vortex sheet solutions to the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics equations. Current vortex sheets are piecewise smooth solutions to the incompressible magnetohydrodynamics equations that satisfy suitable jump conditions for the velocity and magnetic field on the (free) discontinuity surface. In this work, we complete an earlier work by Ali and Hunter and construct approximate solutions at any arbitrarily large order of accuracy to the free boundary problem in three space dimensions when the initial disco…
We introduce so called balanced quasi-monotone systems. These are systems $F(x,r,p,X)=(F_1(x,r,p,X),\ldots,F_m(x,r,p,X))$, where $x$ belongs to a domain $Ω$, $r=u(x)\in\mathbb{R}^m$, $p=Du(x)$ and $X=D^2u(x)$, that can be arranged into two categories that are mutually competitive but internally cooperative. More precisely, for all $i\neq j$ in the set $\{1,2,\ldots,m\}$, $F_j$ is monotone non-decreasing (non-increasing) in $r_i$ if and only if $F_i$ is monotone non-decreasing (non-increasing) in $r_j$ and $F_j$ is a monotone function in $r_i$. We prove the existence and uniqueness of viscosity…
In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of a class of nonlinear elliptic problems posed in a 2-dimensional domain that degenerates into a line segment (a thin domain) when a positive parameter $\varepsilon$ goes to zero. We also allow high oscillating behavior on the upper boundary of the thin domain as $\varepsilon \to 0$. Combining methods from classic homogenization theory for reticulated structures and monotone operators we obtain the homogenized equation proving convergence of the solutions and establishing a corrector function which guarantees strong convergence i…
We establish higher order convergence rates in the theory of periodic homogenization of both linear and fully nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations of non-divergence form. The rates are achieved by involving higher order correctors which fix the errors occurring both in the interior and on the boundary layer of our physical domain. The proof is based on a viscosity method and a new regularity theory which captures the stability of the correctors with respect to the shape of our limit profile.
In this paper we establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions for nonlinear evolution equations on Banach space with locally monotone operators, which is a generalization of the classical result by J.L. Lions for monotone operators. In particular, we show that local monotonicity implies the pseudo-monotonicity. The main result is applied to various types of PDE such as reaction-diffusion equations, generalized Burgers equation, Navier-Stokes equation, 3D Leray-$α$ model and $p$-Laplace equation with non-monotone perturbations.
We present a stability result for a wide class doubly nonlinear equations, featuring general maximal monotone operators, and (possibly) nonconvex and nonsmooth energy functionals. The limit analysis resides on the reformulation of the differential evolution as a scalar energy-conservation equation with the aid of the so-called Fitzpatrick theory for the representation of monotone operators. In particular, our result applies to the vanishing viscosity approximation of rate-independent systems.
Fitzpatrick's variational representation of maximal monotone operators is here extended to a class of pseudo-monotone operators in Banach spaces. On this basis, the initial-value problem associated with the first-order flow of such an operator is here reformulated as a minimization principle, extending a method that was pioneered by Brezis, Ekeland and Nayroles for gradient flows. This formulation is used to prove that the problem is stable w.r.t.\ arbitrary perturbations not only of data but also of operators. This is achieved by using the notion of evolutionary $Γ$-convergence w.r.t.\ a nonl…
The aim of this paper is twofold. The first is to study the asymptotics of a parabolically scaled, continuous and space-time stationary in time version of the well-known Funaki-Spohn model in Statistical Physics. After a change of unknowns requiring the existence of a space-time stationary eternal solution of a stochastically perturbed heat equation, the problem transforms to the qualitative homogenization of a uniformly elliptic, space-time stationary, divergence form, nonlinear partial differential equation, the study of which is the second aim of the paper. An important step is the construc…
The aim of this article is to show the global existence of both martingale and pathwise solutions of stochastic equations with a monotone operator, of the Ladyzenskaya-Smagorinsky type, driven by a general Levy noise. The classical approach based on using directly the Galerkin approximation is not valid. Instead, our approach is based on using appropriate approximations for the monotone operator, Galerkin approximations and on the theory of martingale solutions.

This paper proposes an abstract theory concerned with dynamical systems generated by doubly nonlinear evolution equations governed by subdifferential operators with non-monotone perturbations in a reflexive Banach space setting. In order to construct global attractors, an approach based on the notion of generalized semiflow is employed instead of the usual semi-group approach, since solutions of the Cauchy problem for the equation might not be unique. Moreover, the preceding abstract theory is applied to a generalized Allen-Cahn equation whose potential is divided into a convex part and a non-…
We study the asymptotic behaviour of solutions to Dirichlet problems in perforated domains for nonlinear elliptic equations associated with monotone operators. The main difference with respect to the previous papers on this subject is that no uniformity is assumed in the monotonicity condition. Under a very general hypothesis on the holes of the domains, we construct a limit equation, which is satisfied by the weak limits of the solutions. The additional term in the limit problem depends only on the local behaviour of the holes, which can be expressed in terms of suitable nonlinear capacities …
We derive conditions for the propagation of monotone ordering properties for a class of nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation (PDE) systems on metric graphs. For such systems, PDE equations with a general nonlinear dissipation term define evolution on each edge, and balance laws create Kirchhoff-Neumann boundary conditions at the vertices. Initial conditions, as well as time-varying parameters in the coupling conditions at vertices, provide an initial value problem (IVP). We first prove that ordering properties of the solution to the IVP are preserved when the initial conditions an…
Given a linear semi-bounded symmetric operator $S\ge -ω$, we explicitly define, and provide their nonlinear resolvents, nonlinear maximal monotone operators $A_Θ$ of type $λ>ω$ (i.e. generators of one-parameter continuous nonlinear semi-groups of contractions of type $λ$) which coincide with the Friedrichs extension of $S$ on a convex set containing ${\mathscr D}(S)$. The extension parameter $Θ\subset{\mathfrak h}\times{\mathfrak h}$ ranges over the set of nonlinear maximal monotone relations on an auxiliary Hilbert space $\mathfrak h$ isomorphic to the deficiency subspace of $S$. Moreover $A_…
We study the homogenization of a stationary random maximal monotone operator on a probability space equipped with an ergodic dynamical system. The proof relies on Fitzpatrick's variational formulation of monotone relations, on Visintin's scale integration/disintegration theory and on Tartar-Murat's compensated compactness. We provide applications to systems of PDEs with random coefficients arising in electromagnetism and in nonlinear elasticity.
This paper introduces a new $p$-dependent coercivity condition through which $L^p$-moments for solutions can be obtained for a large class of SPDEs in the variational framework. If $p=2$, our condition reduces to the classically coercivity condition, which only yields second moments for the solution. The abstract result is shown to be optimal. Moreover, the results are applied to obtain $L^p$-moments of solutions for several classical SPDEs such as stochastic heat equations with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, Burgers' equation and the Navier-Stokes equations in two spatial dimensio…
We prove existence and uniqueness of strong solutions, as well as continuous dependence on the initial datum, for a class of fully nonlinear second-order stochastic PDEs with drift in divergence form. Due to rather general assumptions on the growth of the nonlinearity in the drift, which, in particular, is allowed to grow faster than polynomially, existing techniques are not applicable. A well-posedness result is obtained through a combination of a priori estimates on regularized equations, interpreted both as stochastic equations as well as deterministic equations with random coefficients, an…
The paper deals with homogenization problem for nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations in a periodically perforated domain, a nonlinear Fourier boundary conditions being imposed on the perforation border. Under the assumptions that the studied differential equation satisfies monotonicity and 2-growth conditions and that the coefficient of the boundary operator is centered at each level set of unknown function, we show that the problem under consideration admits homogenization and derive the effective model.
We prove quantitative estimates for the stochastic homogenization of linear uniformly elliptic equations in nondivergence form. Under strong independence assumptions on the coefficients, we obtain optimal estimates on the subquadratic growth of the correctors with stretched exponential-type bounds in probability. Like the theory of Gloria and Otto \cite{GO1,GO2} for divergence form equations, the arguments rely on nonlinear concentration inequalities combined with certain estimates on the Green's functions and derivative bounds on the correctors. We obtain these analytic estimates by developin…
Via abstract results on maximal monotone operators and compactness property of Nemickii operator, existence of a weak solution for a class of nonlinear parabolic systems of partial differential equations is proven.
We study an abstract class of autonomous differential inclusions in Hilbert spaces and show the well-posedness and causality, by establishing the operators involved as maximal monotone operators in time and space. Then the proof of the well-posedness relies on a well-known perturbation result for maximal monotone operators. Moreover, we show that certain types of nonlinear boundary value problems are covered by this class of inclusions and we derive necessary conditions on the operators on the boundary in order to apply the solution theory. We exemplify our findings by two examples.
The main goal of this paper is to show how some monotonicity methods related with the subdifferential of suitable convex functions and its extensions as m-accretive operators in Banach spaces lead to new and unexpected results showing, for instance, the continuous and monotone dependence of solutions with the respect to the data (and coefficients) of the problem. In this way, this paper offers `a common roof' to several methods and results concerning monotone and non-monotone frameworks. Besides to present here some new results, this paper offers also a peculiar survey to some topics which att…
