Let $d_1,...,d_r$ be positive integers and let $I = (F_1,...,F_r)$ be an ideal generated by general forms of degrees $d_1,...,d_r$, respectively, in a polynomial ring $R$ with $n$ variables. When all the degrees are the same we give a result that says, roughly, that they have as few first syzygies as possible. In the general case, the Hilbert function of $R/I$ has been conjectured by Fröberg. In a previous work the authors showed that in many situations the minimal free resolution of $R/I$ must have redundant terms which are not forced by Koszul (first or higher) syzygies among the $F_i$ (and hence could not be predicted from the Hilbert function), but the only examples came when $r=n+1$. Our second main set of results in this paper show that further examples can be obtained when $n+1 \leq r \leq 2n-2$. We also show that if Fröberg's conjecture on the Hilbert function is true then any such redundant terms in the minimal free resolution must occur in the top two possible degrees of the free module. Related to the Fröberg conjecture is the notion of Weak Lefschetz property. We continue the description of the ubiquity of this property. We show that any ideal of general forms in $k[x_1,x_2,x_3,x_4]$ has it. Then we show that for certain choices of degrees, any complete intersection has it and any almost complete intersection has it. Finally, we show that most of the time Artinian ``hypersurface sections'' of zeroschemes have it.
Many algebras are expected to have the Weak Lefschetz property though this is often very difficult to establish. We illustrate the subtlety of the problem by studying monomial and some closely related ideals. Our results exemplify the intriguing dependence of the property on the characteristic of the ground field, and on arithmetic properties of the exponent vectors of the monomials.
The Lefschetz question asks if multiplication by a power of a general linear form, $L$, on a graded algebra has maximal rank (in every degree). We consider a quotient by an ideal that is generated by powers of linear forms. Then the Lefschetz question is, for example, related to the problem whether a set of fat points imposes the expected number of conditions on a linear system of hypersurfaces of fixed degree. Our starting point is a result that relates Lefschetz properties in different rings. It suggests to use induction on the number of variables, $n$. If $n = 3$, then it is known that mult…
For standard graded Artinian $K$-algebras defined by componentwise linear ideals and Gotzmann ideals, we give conditions for the weak Lefschetz property in terms of numerical invariants of the defining ideals.
Given an ideal $I=(f_1,\ldots,f_r)$ in $\mathbb C[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ generated by forms of degree $d$, and an integer $k>1$, how large can the ideal $I^k$ be, i.e., how small can the Hilbert function of $\mathbb C[x_1,\ldots,x_n]/I^k$ be? If $r\le n$ the smallest Hilbert function is achieved by any complete intersection, but for $r>n$, the question is in general very hard to answer. We study the problem for $r=n+1$, where the result is known for $k=1$. We also study a closely related problem, the Weak Lefschetz property, for $S/I^k$, where $I$ is the ideal generated by the $d$'th powers of the v…
In this paper, we study the strong Lefschetz property of artinian complete intersection ideals generated by products of linear forms. We prove the strong Lefschetz property for a class of such ideals with binomial generators.
We study the WLP and SLP of artinian monomial ideals in $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots ,x_n]$ via studying their minimal free resolutions. We study the Lefschetz properties of such ideals where the minimal free resolution of $S/I$ is linear for at least $n-2$ steps. We give an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Eisenbud, Huneke and Ulrich for artinian monomial ideals with almost linear resolutions.
We compute the generic initial ideal of a complete intersection of embedding dimension three with strong Lefschetz property and we show that it is an almost reverse lexicographic ideal. This enable us to give a proof for Moreno's conjecture in the case $n=3$.
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a standard graded Artinian ring defined by an m-full ideal, to have the weak Lefschetz property in terms of graded Betti numbers. This is a generalization of a theorem of Wiebe for componentwise linear ideals. We also prove that the class of componentwise linear ideals and that of completely m-full ideals coincide in characteristic zero and in positive characteristic, with the assumption that the generic initial ideal w.r.t. the graded reverse lexicographic order is stable.
For a standard Artinian $k$-algebra $A=R/I$, we give equivalent conditions for $A$ to have the weak (or strong) Lefschetz property or the strong Stanley property in terms of the minimal system of generators of the generic initial ideal $\mathrm{gin}(I)$ of $I$ under the reverse lexicographic order. Using the equivalent condition for the weak Lefschetz property, we show that some graded Betti numbers of $\mathrm{gin}(I)$ are determined just by the the Hilbert function of $I$ if $A$ has the weak Lefschetz property. Furthermore, for the case that $A$ is a standard Artinian $k$-algebra of codimens…
We determine a sharp lower bound for the Hilbert function in degree $d$ of a monomial algebra failing the weak Lefschetz property over a polynomial ring with $n$ variables and generated in degree $d$, for any $d\geq 2$ and $n\geq 3$. We consider artinian ideals in the polynomial ring with $n$ variables generated by homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ invariant under an action of the cyclic group $\mathbb{Z}/d\mathbb{Z}$, for any $n\geq 3$ and any $d\geq 2$. We give a complete classification of such ideals in terms of the weak Lefschetz property depending on the action.
We introduce the $k$-strong Lefschetz property ($k$-SLP) and the $k$-weak Lefschetz property ($k$-WLP) for graded Artinian $K$-algebras, which are generalizations of the Lefschetz properties. The main results obtained in this paper are as follows: 1. Let $I$ be a graded ideal of $R=K[x_1, x_2, x_3]$ whose quotient ring $R/I$ has the SLP. Then the generic initial ideal of $I$ is the unique almost revlex ideal with the same Hilbert function as $R/I$. 2. Let $I$ be a graded ideal of $R=K[x_1, x_2, ..., x_n]$ whose quotient ring $R/I$ has the $n$-SLP. Suppose that all $k$-th differences of the Hil…
We show that the Specht ideal of a two-rowed partition is perfect over an arbitrary field, provided that the characteristic is either zero or bounded below by the size of the second row of the partition, and we show this lower bound is tight. We also establish perfection and other properties of certain variants of Specht ideals, and find a surprising connection to the weak Lefschetz property. Our results in particular give a self-contained proof of Cohen-Macaulayness of certain $h$-equals sets, a result previously obtained by Etingof-Gorsky-Losev over the complex numbers using rational Cheredn…
The weak and strong Lefschetz properties are two basic properties that Artinian algebras may have. Both Lefschetz properties may vary under small perturbations or changes of the characteristic. We study these subtleties by proposing a systematic way of deforming a monomial ideal failing the weak Lefschetz property to an ideal with the same Hilbert function and the weak Lefschetz property. In particular, we lift a family of Artinian monomial ideals to finite level sets of points in projective space with the property that a general hyperplane section has the weak Lefschetz property in almost all…
We generalize some properties related to Hilbert series and Lefschetz properties of Milnor algebras of projective hypersurfaces with isolated singularities to the more general case of an almost complete intersection ideal $J$ of dimension one. When the saturation $I$ of $J$ is a complete intersection, we get explicit formulas for a number of related invariants. New examples of hypersurfaces $V:f=0$ in $P^n$ whose Jacobian ideal $J_f$ satisfies this property and with explicit nontrivial Alexander polynomials are given in any dimension. A Lefschetz type property for the graded quotient $I/J$ is …
Every artinian quotient of $K[x,y]$ has the strong Lefschetz property if $K$ is a field of characteristic zero or is an infinite field whose characteristic is greater than the regularity of the quotient. We improve this bound in the case of monomial ideals. Using this we classify when both bounds are sharp. Moreover, we prove that the artinian quotient of a monomial ideal in $K[x,y]$ always has the strong Lefschetz property, regardless of the characteristic of the field, exactly when the ideal is lexsegment. As a consequence we describe a family of non-monomial complete intersections that alwa…
We study the weak Lefschetz property and the Hilbert function of level Artinian monomial almost complete intersections in three variables. Several such families are shown to have the weak Lefschetz property if the characteristic of the base field is zero or greater than the maximal degree of any minimal generator of the ideal. Two of the families have an interesting relation to tilings of hexagons by lozenges. This lends further evidence to a conjecture by Migliore, Miro-Roig, and the second author. Finally, using our results about the weak Lefschetz property, we show that the Hilbert function…
The subject matter is the structure of the Rees algebra of almost complete intersection ideals of finite colength in low-dimensional polynomial rings over fields. The main tool is a mix of Sylvester forms and iterative mapping cone construction. The material developed spins around ideals of forms in two or three variables in the search of those classes for which the corresponding Rees ideal is generated by Sylvester forms and is almost Cohen--Macaulay. A main offshoot is in the case where the forms are monomials. Another consequence is a proof that the Rees ideals of the base ideals of certain…
We show that an Artinian quotient of K[x, y, z] by an ideal I generated by powers of linear forms has the Weak Lefschetz property. If the syzygy bundle of I is semistable this follows from results of Brenner-Kaid; our proof works without this hypothesis, which typically does not hold.
In this work a combinatorial approach towards the weak Lefschetz property is developed that relates this property to enumerations of signed perfect matchings as well as to enumerations of signed families of non-intersecting lattice paths in certain triangular regions. This connection is used to study Artinian quotients by monomial ideals of a three-dimensional polynomial ring. Extending a main result in the recent memoir [Boij, Migliore, Miró-Roig, Nagel, Zanello], we completely classify the quotients of type two that have the weak Lefschetz property in characteristic zero. We also derive resu…
Migliore-Miró-Roig-Nagel [Trans. A.M.S. 2011, arXiv: 0811.1023] show that the weak Lefschetz property (WLP) can fail for an ideal I in K[x_1,x_2,x_3,x_4] generated by powers of linear forms. This is in contrast to the analogous situation in K[x_1,x_2,x_3], where WLP always holds [H.Schenck, A.Seceleanu, Proc. A.M.S. 2010, arXiv:0911.0876]. We use the inverse system dictionary to connect I to an ideal of fat points and show that failure of WLP for powers of linear forms is connected to the geometry of the associated fat point scheme. Recent results of Sturmfels-Xu in [J. Eur. Math. Soc. 2010, a…
Our starting point is a basic problem in Hermite interpolation theory, namely determining the least degree of a homogeneous polynomial that vanishes to some specified order at every point of a given finite set. We solve this problem if the number of points is small compared to the dimension of their linear span. This also allows us to establish results on the Hilbert function of ideals generated by powers of linear forms. The Verlinde formula determines such a Hilbert function in a specific instance. We complement this result and also determine the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the corresp…
Using a connection to lozenge tilings of triangular regions, we establish an easily checkable criterion that guarantees the weak Lefschetz property of a quotient by a monomial ideal. It is also shown that each such ideal also has a semistable syzygy bundle.
Deciding the presence of the weak Lefschetz property often is a challenging problem. In this work an in-depth study is carried out in the case of Artinian monomial ideals with four generators in three variables. We use a connection to lozenge tilings to describe semistability of the syzygy bundle of such an ideal, to determine its generic splitting type, and to decide the presence of the weak Lefschetz property. We provide results in both characteristic zero and positive characteristic.
The purpose of this note is to characterize the finite Hilbert functions which force all of their artinian algebras to enjoy the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). Curiously, they turn out to be exactly those (characterized by Wiebe in $[Wi]$) whose Gotzmann ideals have the WLP. This implies that, if a Gotzmann ideal has the WLP, then all algebras with the same Hilbert function (and hence lower Betti numbers) have the WLP as well. However, we will answer in the negative, even in the case of level algebras, the most natural question that one might ask after reading the previous sentence: If $A$ is …
In a recent paper, Schenck and Seceleanu showed that in three variables, any ideal generated by powers of linear forms has the Weak Lefschetz Property (WLP). This result contrasts with examples, in our previous work, of ideals in four variables generated by powers of linear forms which fail the WLP. Set $R:=k[x_1,\dots,x_r]$. Assume $1< a_1 \leq \dots \leq a_{r+1}$. In this paper, we concentrate our attention on almost complete intersection ideals $I = \langle L_1^{a_1}, \dots ,L_r^{a_r},L_{r+1}^{a_{r+1}} \rangle \subset R$ generated by powers of general linear forms $L_{i}$. Our approach is v…
In [MMR], Michałek--Miró-Roig give a beautiful geometric characterization of Artinian quotients by ideals generated by quadratic or cubic monomials, such that the multiplication map by a general linear form fails to be injective in the first nontrivial degree. Their work was motivated by conjectures of Ilardi and Mezzetti-Miró-Roig-Ottaviani, connecting the failure to Laplace equations and classical results of Togliatti on osculating planes. We study quotients by quadratic monomial ideals, explaining failure of the Weak Lefschetz Property for some cases not covered by [MMR].
In this article, we study the weak and strong Lefschetz properties, and the related notion of almost revlex ideal, in the non-Artinian case, proving that several results known in the Artinian case hold also in this more general setting. We then apply the obtained results to the study of the Jacobian algebra of hyperplane arrangements.
In this paper, we study the dependence of the weak Lefschetz property of algebras defined by a special class of monomials ideals in a polynomial ring with coefficient in a field, to the characteristic of the base field.
In this paper we study the Weak Lefschetz property of two classes of standard graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras associated in a natural way to the Apéry set of numerical semigroups. To this aim we also prove a general result about the transfer of Weak Lefschetz property from an Artinian Gorenstein algebra to its quotients modulo a colon ideal.
We introduce a method for studying the Lefschetz properties for $k[x,y]$-modules based on the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot Lemma. In particular, we prove that certain modules over Artinian Clements-Lindström rings in characteristic zero have the strong Lefschetz property. In particular, we show that every homogeneous idea in a Clements-Lindström ring of embedding dimension two has the strong Lefschetz property. As an application, we study the strong Lefschetz property of type two monomial ideals of codimension three.
In this note, we study Togliatti systems generated by invariants of the dihedral group $D_{2d}$ acting on $k[x_{0},x_{1},x_{2}]$. This leads to the first family of non monomial Togliatti systems, which we call $GT-$systems with group $D_{2d}$. We study their associated varieties $S_{D_{2d}}$, called $GT-$surfaces with group $D_{2d}$. We prove that they are arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay surfaces whose homogeneous ideal, $I(S_{D_{2d}})$, is minimally generated by quadrics and we find a minimal free resolution of $I(S_{D_{2d}})$.
In [9], Migliore, Miró-Roig and Nagel, proved that if $R = \mathbb{K}[x,y,z]$, where $\mathbb{K}$ is a field of characteristic zero, and $I=(L_1^{a_1},\dots,L_r^{a_4})$ is an ideal generated by powers of 4 general linear forms, then the multiplication by the square $L^2$ of a general linear form $L$ induces an homomorphism of maximal rank in any graded component of $R/I$. More recently, Migliore and Miró-Roig proved in [8] that the same is true for any number of general linear forms, as long the powers are uniform. In addition, they conjecture that the same holds for arbitrary powers. In this …
We study the weak Lefschetz property of a class of graded Artinian Gorenstein algebras of codimension three associated in a natural way to the Apéry set of a numerical semigroup generated by four natural numbers. We show that these algebras have the weak Lefschetz property whenever the initial degree of their defining ideal is small.
Let A = bigoplus_{i >= 0} A_i be a standard graded Artinian K-algebra, where char K = 0. Then A has the Weak Lefschetz property if there is an element ell of degree 1 such that the multiplication times ell : A_i --> A_{i+1} has maximal rank, for every i, and A has the Strong Lefschetz property if times ell^d : A_i --> A_{i+d} has maximal rank for every i and d. The main results obtained in this paper are the following. 1) EVERY height three complete intersection has the Weak Lefschetz property. (Our method, surprisingly, uses rank two vector bundles on P^2 and the Grauert-Mulich theorem.) 2) W…
MacMahon enumerated the plane partitions in an $a \times b \times c$ box. These are in bijection to lozenge tilings of a hexagon, to certain perfect matchings, and to families of non-intersecting lattice paths. In this work we consider more general regions, called triangular regions, and establish signed versions of the latter three bijections. Indeed, we use perfect matchings and families of non-intersecting lattice paths to define two signs of a lozenge tiling. A combinatorial argument involving a new method, called resolution of a puncture, then shows that the signs are in fact equivalent. …
We prove that a sequence $h$ of non-negative integers is the Hilbert function of some Artinian Gorenstein algebra with the strong Lefschetz property if and only if it is an SI-sequence. This generalizes the result by T. Harima which characterizes the Hilbert functions of Artinian Gorenstein algebras with the weak Lefschetz property. We also provide classes of Artinian Gorenstein algebras obtained from the ideal of points in $\mathbb{P}^n$ such that some of their higher Hessians have non-vanishing determinants. Consequently, we provide families of such algebras satisfying the SLP.
In 2012, Migliore, the first author, and Nagel conjectured that, for all $n\geq 4$, the artinian ideal $I=(L_0^d,\ldots,L_{2n+1}^d) \subset R=k[x_0,\ldots,x_{2n}]$ generated by the $d$-th powers of $2n+2$ general linear forms fails to have the weak Lefschetz property if and only if $d>1$. This paper is entirely devoted to prove partially this conjecture. More precisely, we prove that $R/I$ fails to have the weak Lefschetz property, provided $4\leq n\leq 8,\ d\geq 4$ or $d=2r,\ 1\leq r\leq 8,\ 4\leq n\leq 2r(r+2)-1$.
We find a sufficient condition that $\H$ is not level based on a reduction number. In particular, we prove that a graded Artinian algebra of codimension 3 with Hilbert function $\H=(h_0,h_1,..., h_{d-1}>h_d=h_{d+1})$ cannot be level if $h_d\le 2d+3$, and that there exists a level O-sequence of codimension 3 of type $\H$ for $h_d \ge 2d+k$ for $k\ge 4$. Furthermore, we show that $\H$ is not level if $β_{1,d+2}(I^{\rm lex})=β_{2,d+2}(I^{\rm lex})$, and also prove that any codimension 3 Artinian graded algebra $A=R/I$ cannot be level if $β_{1,d+2}(\Gin(I))=β_{2,d+2}(\Gin(I))$. In this case, the H…
We prove that the $d$-component of the generic initial ideal, with respect to the reverse lexicographic order, of an ideal generated by a regular sequence of homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$ is revlex in a particular, but important, case. Using this property, we compute the generic initial ideal for several complete intersection with strong Lefschetz property.
The basic sequence of a homogeneous ideal $I\sset R=k[\seq{x}{1}{r}]$ defining an Artinian graded ring $A=R/I$ not having the weak Lefschetz property has the property that the first term of the last part is less than the last term of the penultimate part. For a general linear form $\ell$ in $\seq{x}{1}{r}$, this fact affects in a certain way the behavior of the $r-1$ square matrices in $k[\ell]$ which represent the multiplications of the elements of $A$ by $\seq{x}{1}{r-1}$ through a minimal free presentation of $A$ over $k[\ell]$. Taking advantage of it, we consider some modules over an algeb…
