We develop a general stability theory for equilibrium points of Poisson dynamical systems and relative equilibria of Hamiltonian systems with symmetries, including several generalisations of the Energy-Casimir and Energy-Momentum methods. Using a topological generalisation of Lyapunov's result that an extremal critical point of a conserved quantity is stable, we show that a Poisson equilibrium is stable if it is an isolated point in the intersection of a level set of a conserved function with a subset of the phase space that is related to the non-Hausdorff nature of the symplectic leaf space at that point. This criterion is applied to generalise the Energy-Momentum method to Hamiltonian systems which are invariant under non-compact symmetry groups for which the coadjoint orbit space is not Hausdorff. We also show that a $G$-stable relative equilibrium satisfies the stronger condition of being $A$-stable, where $A$ is a specific group-theoretically defined subset of $G$ which contains the momentum isotropy subgroup of the relative equilibrium.
This paper includes results centered around three topics, all of them related with the nonlinear stability of equilibria in Poisson dynamical systems. Firstly, we prove an energy-Casimir type sufficient condition for stability that uses functions that are not necessarily conserved by the flow and that takes into account certain asymptotically stable behavior that may occur in the Poisson category. This method is adapted to Poisson systems obtained via a reduction procedure and we show in examples that the kind of stability that we propose is appropriate when dealing with the stability of the e…
For Hamiltonian systems with spherical symmetry there is a marked difference between zero and non-zero momentum values, and amongst all relative equilibria with zero momentum there is a marked difference between those of zero and those of non-zero angular velocity. We use techniques from singularity theory to study the family of relative equilibria that arise as a symmetric Hamiltonian which has a group orbit of equilibria with zero momentum is perturbed so that the zero-momentum relative equilibrium are no longer equilibria. We also analyze the stability of these perturbed relative equilibria…
We show that, given a certain transversality condition, the set of relative equilibria $\mcl E$ near $p_e\in\mcl E$ of a Hamiltonian system with symmetry is locally Whitney-stratified by the conjugacy classes of the isotropy subgroups (under the product of the coadjoint and adjoint actions) of the momentum-generator pairs $(μ,ξ)$ of the relative equilibria. The dimension of the stratum of the conjugacy class (K) is $\dim G+2\dim Z(K)-\dim K$, where Z(K) is the center of K, and transverse to this stratum $\mcl E$ is locally diffeomorphic to the commuting pairs of the Lie algebra of $K/Z(K)$. Th…
In the presence of noncompact symmetry, the stability of relative equilibria under momentum-preserving perturbations does not generally imply robust stability under momentum-changing perturbations. For axisymmetric relative equilibria of Hamiltonian systems with Euclidean symmetry, we investigate different mechanisms of stability: stability by energy-momentum confinement, KAM, and Nekhoroshev stability, and we explain the transitions between these. We apply our results to the Kirchhoff model for the motion of an axisymmetric underwater vehicle, and we numerically study dissipation induced inst…
For a symmetric Hamiltonian system, lower bounds for the number of relative equilibria surrounding stable and formally unstable relative equilibria on nearby energy levels are given.
We consider Hamiltonian systems with symmetry, and relative equilibria with isotropy subgroup of positive dimension. The stability of such relative equilibria has been studied by Ortega and Ratiu and by Lerman and Singer. In both papers the authors give sufficient conditions for stability which require first determining a splitting of a subspace of the Lie algebra of the symmetry group, with different splittings giving different criteria. In this note we remove this splitting construction and so provide a more general and more easily computed criterion for stability. The result is also extende…
An interesting situation occurs when the linearized dynamics of the shape of a formally stable Hamiltonian relative equilibrium at nongeneric momentum 1:1 resonates with a frequency of the relative equilibrium's generator. In this case some of the shape variables couple to the group variables to first order in the momentum perturbation, and the first order perturbation theory implies that the relative equilibrium slowly changes orientation in the same way that a charged particle with magnetic moment moves on a sphere under the influence of a radial magnetic monopole. In the course of showing t…
This is an expository paper on Lyapunov stability of equilibria of autonomous Hamiltonian systems. Our aim is to clarify the concept of weak instability, namely instability without non-constant motions which have the equilibrium as limit point as time goes to minus infinity. This is done by means of some examples. In particular, we show that a weakly unstable equilibrium point can be stable for the linearized vector field.
Purely rotational relative equilibria of an ellipsoidal underwater vehicle occur at nongeneric momentum where the symplectic reduced spaces change dimension. The stability these relative equilibria under momentum changing perturbations is not accessible by Lyapunov functions obtained from energy and momentum. A blow-up construction transforms the stability problem to the analysis symmetry-breaking perturbations of Hamiltonian relative equilibria. As such, the stability follows by KAM theory rather than energy-momentum confinement.
We consider Hamiltonian systems of two degrees of freedome having a nilpotent equilibrium point with only one eigenvector. We provide the universal unfolding of such equilibrium, provided a non-degeneracy condition holds. We show that the only co-dimension 1 bifurcations that happen in the unfolding are of two types: the normally hyperbolic or elliptic centre-saddle bifurcations and the supercritical Hamiltonian-Hopf bifurcation.
In symmetric Hamiltonian systems, relative equilibria usually arise in continuous families. The geometry of these families in the setting of free actions of the symmetry group is well-understood. Here we consider the question for non-free actions. Some results are already known in this direction, and we use the so called bundle equations to provide a systematic treatment of this question which both consolidates the known results, extending the scope of the results to deal with non-compact symmetry groups, as well as producing new results. Specifically we address questions about the stability, …
We show existence of relative periodic orbits (a.k.a. relative nonlinear normal modes) near relative equilibria of a symmetric Hamiltonian system under an appropriate assumption on the Hessian of the Hamiltonian. This gives a relative version of the Moser-Weinstein theorem. The paper supersedes an earlier paper (this arxiv math.SG/9906007), which contains a mistake.
We consider a Hamiltonian system which has an elliptic-hyperbolic equilibrium with a homoclinic loop. We identify the set of orbits which are homoclinic to the center manifold of the equilibrium via a Lyapunov- Schmidt reduction procedure. This leads to the study of a singularity which inherits certain structure from the Hamiltonian nature of the system. Under non-degeneracy assumptions, we classify the possible Morse indices of this singularity, permitting a local description of the set of homoclinic orbits. We also consider the case of time-reversible Hamiltonian systems.
We prove that for every proper Hamiltonian action of a Lie group G in finite dimensions the momentum map is locally G-open relative to its image (i.e. images of G-invariant open sets are open). As an application we deduce that in a Hamiltonian system with continuous Hamiltonian symmetries, extremal relative equilibria persist for every perturbation of the value of the momentum map, provided the isotropy subgroup of this value is compact. We also demonstrate how this persistence result applies to an example of ellipsoidal figures of rotating fluid, and provide an example with plane point vortic…
The relative equilibria of a symmetric Hamiltonian dynamical system are the critical points of the so-called augmented Hamiltonian. The underlying geometric structure of the system is used to decompose the critical point equations and construct a collection of implicitly defined functions and reduced equations describing the set of relative equilibria in a neighborhood of a given relative equilibrium. The structure of the reduced equations is studied in a few relevant situations. In particular, a persistence result of Lerman and Singer [LS98] is generalized to the framework of Abelian proper a…
We study bifurcations of homoclinic orbits to hyperbolic saddle equilibria in a class of four-dimensional systems which may be Hamiltonian or not. Only one parameter is enough to treat these types of bifurcations in Hamiltonian systems but two parameters are needed in general systems. We apply a version of Melnikov's method due to Gruendler to obtain saddle-node and pitchfork types of bifurcation results for homoclinic orbits. Furthermore we prove that if these bifurcations occur, then the variational equations around the homoclinic orbits are integrable in the meaning of differential Galois t…
In this paper, we discuss several relations between the existence of invariant volume forms for Hamiltonian systems on Poisson-Lie groups and the unimodularity of the Poisson-Lie structure. In particular, we prove that Hamiltonian vector fields on a Lie group endowed with a unimodular Poisson-Lie structure preserve a multiple of any left-invariant volume on the group. Conversely, we also prove that if there exists a Hamiltonian function such that the identity element of the Lie group is a nondegenerate singularity and the associated Hamiltonian vector field preserves a volume form, then the Po…
A method for testing $G_μ$-stability of relative equilibria in Hamiltonian systems of the form "kinetic + potential energy" is presented. This method extends the Reduced Energy-Momentum Method of Simo et al. to the case of non-free group actions and singular momentum values. A normal form for the symplectic matrix at a relative equilibrium is also obtained.
We will further develop the study of the dissipation for a Hamilton-Poisson system introduced in \cite{2}. We will give a tensorial form of this dissipation and show that it preserves the Hamiltonian function but not the Poisson geometry of the initial Hamilton-Poisson system. We will give precise results about asymptotic stabilizability of the stable equilibria of the initial Hamilton-Poisson system.
In this paper the non-canonical Hamiltonian dynamics of a gyrostat in the three body problem will be examined. By means of geometric-mechanics methods some relative equilibria of the dynamics of a gyrostat in Newtonian interaction with two rigid bodies will be studied. Taking advantage of the results obtained in previous papers, working on the reduced problem, the bifurcations of these relative equilibria will be studied. The instability of Eulerian relative equilibria if the gyrostat is close to a sphere is proven. Necessary and sufficient conditions will be provided for lineal stability of L…
A new diffusion mechanism from the neighborhood of elliptic equilibria for Hamiltonian flows in three or more degrees of freedom is introduced. We thus obtain explicit real entire Hamiltonians on $\R^{2d}$, $d\geq 4$, that have a Lyapunov unstable elliptic equilibrium with an arbitrary chosen frequency vector whose coordinates are not all of the same sign. For non-resonant frequency vectors, our examples all have divergent Birkhoff normal form at the equilibrium. On $\R^4$, we give explicit examples of real entire Hamiltonians having an equilibrium with an arbitrary chosen non-resonant frequen…
The stability for all generic equilibria of the Lie-Poisson dynamics of the $\mathfrak{so}(4)$ rigid body dynamics is completely determined. It is shown that for the generalized rigid body certain Cartan subalgebras (called of coordinate type) of $\mathfrak{so}(n)$ are equilibrium points for the rigid body dynamics. In the case of $\mathfrak{so}(4)$ there are three coordinate type Cartan subalgebras whose intersection with a regular adjoint orbit give three Weyl group orbits of equilibria. These coordinate type Cartan subalgebras are the analogues of the three axes of equilibria for the classi…
We show how the theory of Poisson Lie groups can be used to establish the Poisson properties of the Yang-Baxter maps and related transfer dynamics. As an example we present the Hamiltonian structure for the matrix KdV soliton interaction.
We prove the following rigidity result for the Tonelli Hamiltonians. Let T * M be the cotangent bundle of a closed manifold M endowed with its usual symplectic form. Let (F\_n) be a sequence of Tonelli Hamiltonians that C^0 converges on the compact subsets to a Tonelli Hamiltonian F. Let (G\_n) be a sequence of Hamiltonians that that C^0 converges on the compact subsets to a Hamiltonian G. We assume that the sequence of the Poisson brackets ({F\_n , G\_n }) C^0-converges on the compact subsets to a C^1 function H. Then H = {F, G}.
First, we review the notion of a Poisson structure on a noncommutative algebra due to Block-Getzler and Xu and introduce a notion of a Hamiltonian vector field on a noncommutative Poisson algebra. Then we describe a Poisson structure on a noncommutative algebra associated with a transversely symplectic foliation and construct a class of Hamiltonian vector fields associated with this Poisson structure.
We consider a Hamiltonian system with 2 degrees of freedom, with a hyperbolic equilibrium point having a loop or homoclinic orbit (or, alternatively, two hyperbolic equilibrium points connected by a heteroclinic orbit), as a step towards understanding the behavior of nearly-integrable Hamiltonians near double resonances. We provide a constructive approach to study whether the unstable and stable invariant manifolds of the hyperbolic point intersect transversely along the loop, inside their common energy level. For the system considered, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the…
We present an introduction to the orbital stability of relative equilibria of Hamiltonian dynamical systems on (finite and infinite dimensional) Banach spaces. A convenient formulation of the theory of Hamiltonian dynamics with symmetry and the corresponding momentum maps is proposed that allows us to highlight the interplay between (symplectic) geometry and (functional) analysis in the proofs of orbital stability of relative equilibria via the so-called energy-momentum method. The theory is illustrated with examples from finite dimensional systems, as well as from Hamiltonian PDE's, such as s…
We present applications of the notion of isomorphic vector fields to the study of nonlinear stability of relative equilibria. Isomorphic vector fields were introduced by Hepworth [Theory Appl. Categ. 22 (2009), 542-587] in his study of vector fields on differentiable stacks. Here we argue in favor of the usefulness of replacing an equivariant vector field by an isomorphic one to study nonlinear stability of relative equilibria. In particular, we use this idea to obtain a criterion for nonlinear stability. As an application, we offer an alternative proof of Montaldi and Rodríguez-Olmos's criter…
Morse theoretical ideas are applied to the study of relative equilibria in the planar $n$-vortex problem. For the case of positive circulations, we prove that the Morse index of a critical point of the Hamiltonian restricted to a level surface of the angular impulse is equal to the number of pairs of real eigenvalues of the corresponding relative equilibrium periodic solution. The Morse inequalities are then used to prove the instability of some families of relative equilibria in the four-vortex problem with two pairs of equal vorticities. We also show that, for positive circulations, relative…
Hamiltonian formulation of N=3 systems is considered in general. The most general solution of the Jacobi equation in ${\mathbb R}^3$ is proposed. Compatible Poisson structures and the corresponding bi-Hamiltonian N=3 systems are also discussed.
We study the geometric structure of the drift dynamics of Irreversible port-Hamiltonian systems. This drift dynamics is defined with respect to a product of quasi-Poisson brackets, reflecting the interconnection structure and the constitutive relations of the irreversible phenomena occuring in the system. We characterize this product of quasi-Poisson brackets using a covariant 4-tensor and an associated function. We derive various conditions for which this 4-tensor and the associated function may be reduced to a product of quasi-Poisson brackets.
