A generalised Thurston-Bennequin invariant for a Q-singularity of a real algebraic variety is defined as a linking form on the homologies of the real link of the singularity. The main goal of this paper is to present a method to calculate the linking form in terms of the very good resolution graph of a real normal unibranch surface singularity. For such singularities, the value of the linking form is the Thurston-Bennequin number of the real link of the singularity. As a special case of unibranch surface singularities, the behaviour of the linking form is investigated on the Brieskorn double points x^m+y^n\pm z^2=0.
We study the Thurston-Bennequin number of complete and complete bipartite Legendrian graphs. We define a new invariant called the total Thurston-Bennequin number of the graph. We show that this invariant is determined by the Thurston-Bennequin numbers of 3-cycles for complete graphs and by the Thurston-Bennequin number of 4-cycles for complete bipartite graphs. We discuss the consequences of these results for K_4, K_5 and K_{3,3}.
We show that any open subset of a contact manifold of dimension greater than three contains a certain non-convex hypersurface violating the Thurston-Bennequin inequality.

In this article, we consider the maximal value of the Thurston--Bennequin invariant of Legendrian knots which topologically represent a fixed knot type in the standard contact 3-space and we prove a formula of the value under the connected sum operation of knots.
We compute the maximal Thurston-Bennequin number for a Legendrian two-bridge knot or oriented two-bridge link in standard contact R^3, by showing that the upper bound given by the Kauffman polynomial is sharp. As an application, we present a table of maximal Thurston-Bennequin numbers for prime knots with nine or fewer crossings.
In the present paper we determine the Thurston-Bennequin invariant of graph divide links, which include all closed positive braids, all divide links and certain negative twist knots. As a corollary of this and a result of P. Lisca and A.I. Stipsicz, we prove that the 3-manifold obtained from the 3-sphere by Dehn surgery along a non-trivial graph divide knot K with coefficient r carries positive, tight contact structures for every r except the Thurston-Bennequin invariant of K.
This article describes the following results which relate to each other; i) convergence of high dimensional contact structure to codimension one foliation with Reeb component, ii) relation between Nil-type and Sol-type contact submanifolds of S^5, iii) definition of convex Thurston-Bennequin inequality, and iv) generalization of Lutz twist via convex hypersurface theory. The other article concerning non-convex hypersurfaces is included as an appendix.
We show that there exists a Legendrian knot with maximal Thurston-Bennequin invariant whose contact homology is trivial. We also provide another Legendrian knot which has the same knot type and classical invariants but nonvanishing contact homology.
We discuss the relation between arc index, maximal Thurston--Bennequin number, and Khovanov homology for knots. As a consequence, we calculate the arc index and maximal Thurston--Bennequin number for all knots with at most 11 crossings. For some of these knots, the calculation requires a consideration of cables which also allows us to compute the maximal self-linking number for all knots with at most 11 crossings.
The class of +adequate links contains both alternating and positive links. Generalizing results of Tanaka (for the positive case) and Ng (for the alternating case), we construct fronts of an arbitrary +adequate link A so that the diagram has a ruling, therefore its Thurston-Bennequin number is maximal among Legendrian representatives of A. We derive consequences for the Kauffman polynomial and Khovanov homology of +adequate links.
We establish an upper bound for the Thurston-Bennequin number of a Legendrian link using the Khovanov homology of the underlying topological link. This bound is sharp in particular for all alternating links, and knots with nine or fewer crossings.
A flat plumbing basket is a surface consisting a disk and finitely many bands which are contained in distinct pages of the trivial open book decomposition of $\mathbf{S}^{3}$. In this paper, we construct a Legendrian link from a flat plumbing basket, and we describe a relation among the self-linking number, the Thurston-Bennequin number and the flat plumbing basket number of the link. As a corollary, we determine the flat plumbing basket numbers of torus links.
Using a knot concordance invariant from the Heegaard Floer theory of Ozsvath and Szabo, we obtain new bounds for the Thurston-Bennequin and rotation numbers of Legendrian knots in S^3. We also apply these bounds to calculate the knot concordance invariant for certain knots.
In this paper, we introduce a rational $τ$ invariant for rationally null-homologous knots in contact 3-manifolds with nontrivial Ozsváth-Szabó contact invariants. Such an invariant is an upper bound for the sum of rational Thurston-Bennequin invariant and the rational rotation number of the Legendrian representatives of the knot. In the special case of Floer simple knots in L-spaces, we can compute the rational $τ$ invariants by correction terms.
We give a generalized Thurston--Bennequin-type inequality for links in $S^3$ using a Bauer--Furuta-type invariant for 4-manifolds with contact boundary. As a special case, we also give an adjunction inequality for smoothly embedded orientable surfaces with negative intersection in a closed oriented smooth 4-manifold whose non-equivariant Bauer--Furuta invariant is non-zero.
We give a method for constructing a Legendrian representative of a knot in $S^3$ which realizes its maximal Thurston-Bennequin number under a certain condition. The method utilizes Stein handle decompositions of $D^4$, and the resulting Legendrian representative is often very complicated (relative to the complexity of the topological knot type). As an application, we construct infinitely many knots in $S^3$ each of which yields a reducible 3-manifold by a Legendrian surgery in the standard tight contact structure. This disproves a conjecture of Lidman and Sivek.
For a 4-manifold represented by a framed knot in $S^3$, it has been well known that the 4-manifold admits a Stein structure if the framing is less than the maximal Thurston-Bennequin number of the knot. In this paper, we prove either the converse of this fact is false or there exists a compact contractible oriented smooth 4-manifold (with Stein fillable boundary) admitting no Stein structure. Note that an exotic smooth structure on $S^4$ exists if and only if there exists a compact contractible oriented smooth 4-manifold with $S^3$ boundary admitting no Stein structure.
In \cite{confol} Y. Eliashberg and W. Thurston gave a definition of tight confoliations. We give an example of a tight confoliation $ξ$ on $T^3$ violating the Thurston-Bennequin inequalities. This answers a question from \cite{confol} negatively. Although the tightness of a confoliation does not imply the Thurston-Bennequin inequalities, it is still possible to prove restrictions on homotopy classes of plane fields which contain tight confoliations. We prove that a version of the Thurston-Bennequin inequality holds for Legendrian and transverse links in a rational homology contact 3-sphere $(M,ξ)$, whenever $ξ$ is tight. More specifically, we show that the self-linking number of a transverse link $T$ in $(M,ξ)$, such that the boundary of its tubular neighbourhood consists of incompressible tori, is bounded by the Thurston norm $||T||_T$ of $T$. We define the Thurston-Bennequin polytope of a two-component link as the convex hull of all pairs of integers that arise as framings of a Legendrian representative. The main result of this paper is a description of the Thurston-Bennequin polytope for two-bridge links. As an application, we construct non-quasipositive surfaces in $\R^3$ all whose sub-annuli are quasipositive.
For any generic immersion of a Petersen graph into a plane, the number of crossing points between two edges of distance one is odd. The sum of the crossing numbers of all $5$-cycles is odd. The sum of the rotation numbers of all $5$-cycles is even. We show analogous results for $6$-cycles, $8$-cycles and $9$-cycles. The Thurston-Bennequin invariant provides one notion of self-linking for any homologically-trivial Legendrian curve in a contact three-manifold. Here we discuss related analytic notions of self-linking for Legendrian knots in Euclidean space. Our definition is based upon a reformulation of the elementary Gauss linking integral and is motivated by ideas from supersymmetric gauge theory. We recover the Thurston-Bennequin invariant as a special case.
All knots in $R^3$ possess Seifert surfaces, and so the classical Thurston-Bennequin and rotation (or Maslov) invariants for Legendrian knots in a contact structure on $R^3$ can be defined. The definitions extend easily to null-homologous knots in any $3$-manifold $M$ endowed with a contact structure $ξ$. We generalize the definition of Seifert surfaces and use them to define these invariants for all Legendrian knots, including those that are not null-homologous, in a contact structure on the $3$-torus $T^3$. Using the knot Floer homology filtration, we define invariants associated to a knot in a three-manifold possessing non-vanishing Floer co(homology) classes. In the case of the Ozsvath-Szabo contact invariant we obtain an invariant of knots in a contact three-manifold. This invariant provides an upper bound for the Thurston-Bennequin plus rotation number of any Legendrian realization of the knot. We use it to demonstrate the first systematic construction of prime knots in contact manifolds other than the three-sphere with negative maximal Thurston-Bennequin invariant. In a recent paper, McMullen showed an inequality between the Thurston norm and the Alexander norm of a 3-manifold. This generalizes the well-known fact that twice the genus of a knot is bounded from below by the degree of the Alexander polynomial. We extend the Bennequin inequality for links to an inequality for all points of the Thurston norm, if the manifold is a link complement. We compare these two inequalities on two classes of closed braids. In an additional section we discuss a conjectured inequality due to Morton for certain points of the Thurston norm. In the note we study Legendrian and transverse knots in rationally null-homologous knot types. In particular we generalize the standard definitions of self-linking number, Thurston-Bennequin invariant and rotation number. We then prove a version of Bennequin's inequality for these knots and classify precisely when the Bennequin bound is sharp for fibered knot types. Finally we study rational unknots and show they are weakly Legendrian and transversely simple. In 1997, Chekanov gave the first example of a Legendrian nonsimple knot type: the $m(5_2)$ knot. Epstein, Fuchs, and Meyer extended his result by showing that there are at least $n$ different Legendrian representatives with maximal Thurston--Bennequin number of the twist knot $K_{-2n}$ with crossing number $2n+1$. In this paper we give a complete classification of Legendrian and transverse representatives of twist knots. Ozsvath and Szabo have defined a knot concordance invariant tau that bounds the 4-ball genus of a knot. Here we discuss shortcuts to its computation. We include examples of Alexander polynomial one knots for which the invariant is nontrivial, including all iterated untwisted positive doubles of knots with nonnegative Thurston-Bennequin number, such as the trefoil, and explicit computations for several 10 crossing knots. We also note that a new proof of the Slice-Bennequin Inequality quickly follows from these techniques.
We use an estimate on the Thurston--Bennequin invariant of a Legendrian link in terms of its Kauffman-polynomial to show that links of topological unknots, e.g. the Borromean rings or the Whithead link, may not be represented by Legendrian links of Legendrian unknots.
It is shown that Legendrian (resp. transverse) cable links in the 3-sphere with its standard tight contact structure, i.e. links consisting of an unknot and a cable of that unknot, are classified by their oriented link type and the classical invariants (Thurston-Bennequin invariant and rotation number in the Legendrian case, self-linking number in the transverse case). The analogous result is proved for torus knots in the 1-jet space of the circle with its standard tight contact structure.
For Legendrian links in the 1-jet space of $S^1$ we show that the 1-graded ruling polynomial may be recovered from the Kauffman skein module. For such links a generalization of the notion of normal ruling is introduced. We show that the existence of such a generalized normal ruling is equivalent to sharpness of the Kauffman polynomial estimate for the Thurston-Bennequin number as well as to the existence of an ungraded augmentation of the Chekanov-Eliashberg DGA. Parallel results involving the HOMFLY-PT polynomial and 2-graded generalized normal rulings are established.
Rationally null-homologous links in Seifert fibered spaces may be represented combinatorially via labeled diagrams. We introduce an additional condition on a labeled link diagram and prove that it is equivalent to the existence of a rational Seifert surface for the link. In the case when this condition is satisfied, we generalize Seifert's algorithm to explicitly construct a rational Seifert surface for any rationally null-homologous knot. In \cite{GZ}, Gilmer and Zhong established the existence of an invariant for links in $S^1\times S^2$ which is a rational function in variables $a$ and $s$ and satisfies the HOMFLY-PT skein relations. We give formulas for evaluating this invariant in terms of a standard, geometrically simple basis for the HOMFLY-PT skein module of the solid torus. This allows computation of the invariant for arbitrary links in $S^1\times S^2$ and shows that the invariant is in fact a Laurent polynomial in $a$ and $z= s -s^{-1}$. Theory is developed for linear-quadratic at infinity generating families for Legendrian knots in R^3. It is shown that the unknot with maximal Thurston--Bennequin invariant of -1 has a unique linear-quadratic at infinity generating family, up to fiber-preserving diffeomorphism and stabilization. From this, invariant generating family polynomials are constructed for 2-component Legendrian links where each component is a maximal unknot.
