The main purpose of this notes is to supplement the paper reid, which treated Minimal Model Program (also called Mori's Program) on toric varieties. We calculate lengths of negative extremal rays of toric varieties. As an application, we obtain a generalization of Fujita's conjecture for singular toric varieties. We also prove that every toric variety has a small projective toric $\bQ$-factorialization.
We can run the MMP for any divisor on any $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial projective toric variety. We show that two Mori fiber spaces, which are outputs of the above MMP, are connected by finitely many elementary transforms.
The main purpose of this paper is to give a simple and non-combinatorial proof of the toric Mori theory. Here, the toric Mori theory means the (log) Minimal Model Program (MMP, for short) for toric varieties. We minimize the arguments on fans and their decompositions. We recommend this paper to the following people: (A) those who are uncomfortable with manipulating fans and their decompositions, (B) those who are familiar with toric geometry but not with the MMP. People in the category (A) will be relieved from tedious combinatorial arguments in several problems. Those in the category (B) will…
We study the question of whether the blow-ups of toric surfaces of Picard number one at the identity point of the torus are Mori Dream Spaces. For some of these toric surfaces, the question whether the blow-up is a Mori Dream Space is equivalent to countably many planar interpolation problems. We state a conjecture which generalizes a theorem of Gonzalez and Karu. We give new examples and non-examples of Mori Dream Spaces among these blow-ups.
It was conjectured by McKernan and Shokurov that for all Mori contractions from X to Y of given dimensions, for any positive epsilon there is a positive delta, such that if X is epsilon-log terminal, then Y is delta-log terminal. We prove this conjecture in the toric case and discuss the dependence of delta on epsilon, which seems mysterious.
We give new estimates of lengths of extremal rays of birational type for toric varieties. We can see that our new estimates are the best by constructing some examples explicitly. As applications, we discuss the nefness and pseudo-effectivity of adjoint bundles of projective toric varieties. We also treat some generalizations of Fujita's freeness and very ampleness for toric varieties.
We treat equivariant completions of toric contraction morphisms as an application of the toric Mori theory. For this purpose, we generalize the toric Mori theory for non-$\mathbb Q$-factorial toric varieties. So, our theory seems to be quite different from Reid's original combinatorial toric Mori theory. We also explain various examples of non-$\mathbb Q$-factorial contractions, which imply that the $\mathbb Q$-factoriality plays an important role in the Minimal Model Program. Thus, this paper completes the foundations of the toric Mori theory and show us a new aspect of the Minimal Model Prog…
Given a smooth Mori dream space $X$ we construct a model dominating all the small $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial modifications via tropicalization. This construction allows us to recover a Minkowski basis for the Newton-Okounkov bodies of divisors on $X$ and hence the movable cone of $X$. The existence of such basis allows us to prove the polyhedrality of the global Newton-Okounkov body and the existence of toric degenerations.
We prove that the Cox ring of the projectivization P(E) of a rank two toric vector bundle E, over a toric variety X, is a finitely generated k-algebra. As a consequence, P(E) is a Mori dream space if the toric variety X is projective and simplicial.
In the case of toric varieties, we continue the pursuit of Kontsevich's fundamental insight, Homological Mirror Symmetry, by unifying it with the Mori program. We give a refined conjectural version of Homological Mirror Symmetry relating semi-orthogonal decompositions of the $B$-model on toric varieties to semi-orthogonal decompositions on the $A$-model on the mirror Landau-Ginzburg models. As evidence, we prove a new case of Homological Mirror Symmetry for a toric surface whose anticanonical bundle is not nef, namely a certain blow-up of $¶^2$ at three infinitesimally near points.
We totally classify the projective toric varieties whose canonical divisors are divisible by their dimensions. In Appendix, we show that Reid's toric Mori theory implies Mabuchi's characterization of the projective space for toric varieties.
We give a simple combinatorial proof of the toric version of Mori's theorem that the only $n$-dimensional smooth projective varieties with ample tangent bundle are the projective spaces $\mathbb{P}^n$.
The main goal of this paper is to study varieties with the best possible Mori theoretic properties (measured by the existence of a certain decomposition of the cone of effective divisors). We call such a variety a Mori Dream Space. There turn out to be many examples, including quasi-smooth projective toric (or more generally, spherical) varieties, many GIT quotients, and log Fano 3-folds. We characterize Mori dream spaces as GIT quotients of affine varieties by a torus in a manner generalizing Cox's construction of toric varieties as quotients of affine space. Via the quotient description, the…
P-resolutions of two-dimensional, cyclic quotient singularities have been introduced to study deformation theory. Those P-resolutions (as well as the singularities themselves) are toric varieties. In the present paper we give a straight, elementary description of them just by their defining fans.
We give a criterion for a projectivized toric vector bundle to be a Mori dream space and describe its Cox ring using generators and relations. Both of these results are in terms of the matroids of all symmetric powers of the bundle. We also give a criterion for a toric vector bundle to be big and describe several interesting examples of toric vector bundles which highlights how positivity properties for toric vector bundles are more complicated than for toric line bundles.
It is pretty well-known that toric Fano varieties of dimension k with terminal singularities correspond to convex lattice polytopes P in R^k of positive finite volume, such that intersection of P and Z^k consists of the point 0 and vertices of P. Likewise, Q-factorial terminal toric singularities essentially correspond to lattice simplexes with no lattice points inside or on the boundary (except the vertices). There have been a lot work, especially in the last 20 years or so on classification of these objects. The main goal of this paper is to bring together these and related results, that are…
In this note we consider the problem of determining which Fano manifolds can be realised as fibres of a Mori fibre space. In particular, we study the case of toric varieties, Fano manifolds with high index and some Fano manifolds with high Picard rank.
In this paper we construct a degeneration of Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen varieties to toric varieties in an algebraic family and study the geometry of the resulting toric varieties. We give a natural set of torus invariant curves that generate the Chow group of $1$-cycles of the limiting toric variety and express the ample cone of this toric variety as a sub-cone of the ample cone of the corresponding Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen variety. We also give a description of Extremal and Mori rays and determine when this toric variety is Fano.
The goal of the present article is to survey the general theory of Mori Dream Spaces, with special regards to the question: When is the blow-up of toric variety at a general point a Mori Dream Space? We translate the question for toric surfaces of Picard number one into an interpolation problem involving points in the projective plane. An instance of such an interpolation problem is the Gonzalez-Karu theorem that gives new examples of weighted projective planes whose blow-up at a general point is not a Mori Dream Space.
Toric geometry provides a bridge between algebraic geometry and combinatorics of fans and polytopes. For each polarized toric variety (X,L) we have associated a polytope P. In this thesis we use this correspondence to study birational geometry for toric varieties. To this end, we address subjects such as Minimal Model Program, Mori fiber spaces, and chamber structures on the cone of effective divisors. We translate some results from these theories to the combinatorics of polytopes and use them to get structure theorems on space of polytopes. In particular, we treat toric varieties known as 2-F…
In 1988 S. Mori, D. Morrison, and I. Morrison gave a computer-based conjectural classification of four-dimensional cyclic quotient singularities of prime index. It was partially proven in 1990 by G. Sankaran. In 1991 Jim Lawrence basically proved this and much more, been unaware of algebro-geometric meaning of what he did. In this short note I just bring this all together to prove that all n-dimensional toric singularities with log-discrepancy greater than (or equal to) $ε$ form finitely many "series".
We classify smooth toric Fano varieties of dimension $n\geq 3$ containing a toric divisor isomorphic to $\PP^{n-1}$. As a consequence of this classification, we show that any smooth complete toric variety $X$ of dimension $n\geq 3$ with a $T$-fixed point $x\in X$ such that the blow-up $B_x(X)$ of $X$ at $x$ is Fano is isomorphic either to $\PP^n$ or to the blow-up of $\PP^n$ along a $\PP^{n-2}$. As expected, such results are proved using toric Mori theory due to Reid.
We develop some concrete methods to build Sarkisov links, starting from Mori fibre spaces. This is done by studying low rank Cox rings and their properties. As part of this development, we give an algorithm to construct explicitly the coarse moduli space of a toric Deligne-Mumford stack. This can be viewed as the generalisation of the notion of well-formedness for weighted projective spaces to homogeneous coordinate ring of toric varieties. As an illustration, we apply these methods to study birational transformations of certain fibrations of del Pezzo surfaces over $\mathbb{P}^1$, into other …
The Kleiman-Mori cone plays important roles in the birational geometry. In this paper, we construct complete varieties whose Kleiman-Mori cones have interesting properties. First, we construct a simple and explicit example of complete non-projective singular varieties for which Kleiman's ampleness criterion does not hold. More precisely, we construct a complete non-projective toric variety $X$ and a line bundle $L$ on $X$ such that $L$ is positive on $\bar {NE}(X)\setminus \{0\}$. Next, we construct complete singular varieties $X$ with $NE(X)=N_1(X)\simeq \mathbb R^k$ for any $k$. These explic…
Mori dream spaces form a large example class of algebraic varieties, comprising the well known toric varieties. We provide a first software package for the explicit treatment of Mori dream spaces and demonstrate its use by presenting basic sample computations. The software package is accompanied by a Cox ring database which delivers defining data for Cox rings and Mori dream spaces in a suitable format. As an application of the package, we determine the common Cox ring for the symplectic resolutions of a certain quotient singularity investigated by Bellamy/Schedler and Donten-Bury/Wiśniewski.
With the help of Mori theory for projective toric manifolds due to M. Reid, we study non projective toric manifolds which become projective after a single blow up along an invariant curve.
We study the Picard rank of smooth toric Fano varieties possessing families of minimal rational curves of given degree. We discuss variants of a conjecture of Chen-Fu-Hwang and prove a version of their statement that recovers the original conjecture in sufficiently high dimension. We also prove new cases of the original conjecture for high degrees in all dimensions. Our main tools come from toric Mori theory and the combinatorics of Fano polytopes.
We show that being a general fibre of a Mori fibre space is a rather restrictive condition for a Fano variety. More specifically, we obtain two criteria (one sufficient and one necessary) for a Q-factorial Fano variety with terminal singularities to be realised as a fibre of a Mori fibre space, which turn into a characterisation in the rigid case. We apply our criteria to figure out this property up to dimension three and on rational homogeneous spaces. The smooth toric case is studied and an interesting connection with K-semistability is also investigated.
In this Lecture Notes we present, in a sufficiently self contained way, our contributions and interests in the field of Minimal Model Theory. We study Fano-Mori spaces, both from the biregular and the birational point of view. For the former we recall and develop Kawamata's Base Point Free technique and some of Mori's deformation arguments. For the latter we lean on Sarkisov and #-Minimal Model Programs. In writing these notes we want to give our point of view on this area of research. We are not trying to give a treatment of the whole subject. These notes collect some topics we presented in t…
The purpose of this paper is to give basic tools for the classification of nonsingular toric Fano varieties by means of the notions of primitive collections and primitive relations due to Batyrev. By using them we can easily deal with equivariant blow-ups and blow-downs, and get an easy criterion to determine whether a given nonsingular toric variety is a Fano variety or not. As applications of these results, we get a toric version of a theorem of Mori, and can classify, in principle, all nonsingular toric Fano varieties obtained from a given nonsingular toric Fano variety by finite succession…
In this paper we study smooth toric Fano varieties using primitive relations and toric Mori theory. We show that for any irreducible invariant divisor D in a toric Fano variety X, we have $0\leqρ_X-ρ_D\leq 3$, for the difference of the Picard numbers of X and D. Moreover, if $ρ_X-ρ_D>0$ (with some additional hypotheses if $ρ_X-ρ_D=1$), we give an explicit birational description of X. Using this result, we show that when dim X=5, we have $ρ_X\leq 9$. In the second part of the paper, we study equivariant birational morphisms f whose source is Fano. We give some general results, and in dimension …
We use homogeneous spectra of multigraded rings to construct toric embeddings of a large family of projective varieties which preserve some of the birational geometry of the underlying variety, generalizing the well-known construction associated to Mori Dream Spaces.
We describe the C program mori.x. It is part of PALP, a package for analyzing lattice polytopes. Its main purpose is the construction and analysis of three--dimensional smooth Calabi--Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties. The ambient toric varieties are given in terms of fans over the facets of reflexive lattice polytopes. The program performs crepant star triangulations of reflexive polytopes and determines the Mori cones of the resulting toric varieties. Furthermore, it computes the intersection rings and characteristic classes of hypersurfaces.
We present a new class of affine Gorenstein 6-folds obtained by smoothing the 1-dimensional singular locus of a reducible affine toric surface; their existence is established using explicit methods in toric geometry and serial use of Kustin-Miller Gorenstein unprojection. These varieties have applications as key varieties in constructing other varieties, including local models of Mori flips of Type A.
In this article we explore compactifications of cluster varieties of finite type in complex dimension two. Cluster varieties can be viewed as the spec of a ring generated by theta functions and a compactification of such varieties can be given by a grading on that ring, which can be described by positive polytopes [17]. In the examples we exploit, the cluster variety can be interpreted as the complement of certain divisors in del Pezzo surfaces. In the symplectic viewpoint, they can be described via almost toric fibrations over $\R^2$ (after completion). Once identifying them as almost toric m…
We study the base locus of the higher fundamental forms of a projective toric variety $X$ at a general point. More precisely we consider the closure $X$ of the image of a map $({\mathbb C}^*)^k\to {\mathbb P}^n$, sending $t$ to the vector of Laurent monomials with exponents $p_0,\dots,p_n\in {\mathbb Z}^k$. We prove that the $m$-th fundamental form of such an $X$ at a general point has non empty base locus if and only if the points $p_i$ lie on a suitable degree-$m$ affine hypersurface. We then restrict to the case in which the points $p_i$ are all the lattice points of a lattice polytope and …
We generalize results about local heights previously proved in the case of discrete absolute values to arbitrary non-archimedean absolute values of rank 1. First, this is done for the induction formula of Chambert-Loir and Thuillier. Then we prove the formula of Burgos--Philippon--Sombra for the toric local height of a proper normal toric variety in this more general setting. We apply the corresponding formula for Moriwaki's global heights over a finitely generated field to a fibration which is generically toric. We illustrate the last result in a natural example where non-discrete non-archime…
We systematically produce algebraic varieties with torus action by constructing them as suitably embedded subvarieties of toric varieties. The resulting varieties admit an explicit treatment in terms of toric geometry and graded ring theory. Our approach extends existing constructions of rational varieties with torus action of complexity one and delivers all Mori dream spaces with torus action. We exhibit the example class of general arrangement varieties and obtain classification results in the case of complexity two and Picard number at most two, extending former work in complexity one.
Quasi algebraically closed fields, or $C_1$ fields, are defined in terms of a low degree condition. Namely, the field $K$ is $C_1$ if every degree $d$ hypersurface of the projective space $\mathbb{P}_K^n$ contains a $K$-point as soon as $d\leq n$. In this article we define a notion of low toric degree generalizing this condition for hypersurfaces of simplicial projective split toric varieties. This allows us to prove a particular case of the $C_1$ conjecture of Kollár, Lang and Manin : any smooth separably rationally connected variety that can be embedded as such a hypersurface over a $C_1$ fi…
There exist exactly 166 4-dimensional reflexive polytopes such that the corresponding 4-dimensional Gorenstein toric Fano varieties have at worst terminal singularities in codimension 3 and their anticanonical divisor is divisible by 2. For every such a polytope, one naturally obtains a family of Fano hypersurfaces X with at worst conifold singularities. A generic 3-dimensional Fano hypersurface X can be interpreted as a flat conifold degeneration of some smooth Fano 3-folds Y whose classification up to deformation was obtained by Iskovskikh, Mori and Mukai. In this case, both Fano varieties X…
This article provides a complete user's guide to version 2.1 of the toric geometry package PALP by Maximilian Kreuzer and others. In particular, previously undocumented applications such as the program nef.x are discussed in detail. New features of PALP 2.1 include an extension of the program mori.x which can now compute Mori cones and intersection rings of arbitrary dimension and can also take specific triangulations of reflexive polytopes as input. Furthermore, the program nef.x is enhanced by an option that allows the user to enter reflexive Gorenstein cones as input. The present documentat…
Bott proved a strong vanishing theorem for sheaf cohomology on projective space. It holds for toric varieties, but not for most other varieties. We prove Bott vanishing for the quintic del Pezzo surface, also known as the moduli space M_{0,5}^bar of 5-pointed stable curves of genus zero. This is the first non-toric Fano variety for which Bott vanishing has been shown, answering a question by Achinger, Witaszek, and Zdanowicz. In another direction, we prove sharp results on which K3 surfaces satisfy Bott vanishing. For example, a K3 surface with Picard number 1 satisfies Bott vanishing if and o…
