We treat equivariant completions of toric contraction morphisms as an application of the toric Mori theory. For this purpose, we generalize the toric Mori theory for non-$\mathbb Q$-factorial toric varieties. So, our theory seems to be quite different from Reid's original combinatorial toric Mori theory. We also explain various examples of non-$\mathbb Q$-factorial contractions, which imply that the $\mathbb Q$-factoriality plays an important role in the Minimal Model Program. Thus, this paper completes the foundations of the toric Mori theory and show us a new aspect of the Minimal Model Program.
In this paper, we classify projective toric birational morphisms from Gorenstein toric 3-folds onto the 3-dimensional affine space with relatively ample anti-canonical divisors.
In a work of Costa and Miró-Roig state the following conjecture: Every smooth complete toric Fano variety has a full strongly exceptional collection of line bundles. The goal of this article is to prove it for toric Fano 3-folds.
For a toric Deligne-Mumford (DM) stack, we can consider a certain generalization of the Frobenius endomorphism. For such an endomorphism on a two-dimensional toric DM stack, we show that the push-forward of the structure sheaf generates the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on the toric DM stack. We also choose a full strong exceptional collection from the set of direct summands of the push-forward in several examples of two dimensional toric DM orbifolds.
We show that a toric Fano contraction associated to an extremal ray whose length is greater than the dimension of its fiber is a projective space bundle.
In this paper, we obtain a complete classification of smooth toric Fano varieties equipped with extremal contractions which contract divisors to curves for any dimension. As an application, we obtain a complete classification of smooth projective toric varieties which can be equivariantly blown-up to Fano along curves.
In this paper, we give explicit combinatorial descriptions for toric extremal contractions under the relative setting, where varieties do not need to be complete. Fujino's completion theorem is the key to the main result. As applications, we can generalize some of Mustata's results related to Fujita's conjecture on toric varieties for the relative case.
This paper continues the study of two examples of extremal transitions between families of Calabi-Yau threefolds. In a previous paper we suggested that the "mirror transition" between mirror families predicted by Morrison could be achieved naturally by combining a toric morphism with the Batyrev-Borisov construction. This was carried out for a particular example of a conifold transition. In this paper we show that similar methods work for another extremal transition involving more complicated singularities. We also study how the resolution is related to geometry of the ambient toric varieties,…
In this paper we study smooth toric Fano varieties using primitive relations and toric Mori theory. We show that for any irreducible invariant divisor D in a toric Fano variety X, we have $0\leqρ_X-ρ_D\leq 3$, for the difference of the Picard numbers of X and D. Moreover, if $ρ_X-ρ_D>0$ (with some additional hypotheses if $ρ_X-ρ_D=1$), we give an explicit birational description of X. Using this result, we show that when dim X=5, we have $ρ_X\leq 9$. In the second part of the paper, we study equivariant birational morphisms f whose source is Fano. We give some general results, and in dimension …
It was conjectured by McKernan and Shokurov that for all Mori contractions from X to Y of given dimensions, for any positive epsilon there is a positive delta, such that if X is epsilon-log terminal, then Y is delta-log terminal. We prove this conjecture in the toric case and discuss the dependence of delta on epsilon, which seems mysterious.
Special fibrations of toric varieties have been used by physicists, e.g. the school of Candelas, to construct dual pairs in the study of Het/F-theory duality. Motivated by this, we investigate in this paper the details of toric morphisms between toric varieties. In particular, a complete toric description of fibers - both generic and non-generic -, image, and the flattening stratification of a toric morphism are given. Two examples are provided to illustrate the discussions. We then turn to the study of the restriction of a toric morphism to a toric hypersurface. The details of this can be und…
We give an explicit positive answer, in the case of reduced curve singularities, to a question of B. Teissier about the existence of a toric embedded resolution after reembedding. In the case of a curve singularity $(C,O)$ contained in a non singular surface $S$ such a reembedding may be defined in terms of a sequence of maximal contact curves of the minimal embedded resolution of $C$. We prove that there exists a toric modification, after reembedding, which provides an embedded resolution of $C$. We use properties of the semivaluation space of $S$ at $O$ to describe how the dual graph of the …
We announce a factorization result for equivariant birational morphisms between toric 4-folds whose source is Fano: such a morphism is always a composite of blow-ups along smooth invariant centers. Moreover, we show with a counterexample that, differently from the 3-dimensional case, even if both source and target are Fano, the intermediate varieties can not be chosen Fano.
We combine the Bondal-Uehara method for producing exceptional collections on toric varieties with a result of the first author and Favero to expand the set of varieties satisfying Orlov's Conjecture on derived dimension.
In this paper we study the space of morphisms from a complex projective space to a compact smooth toric variety X. It is shown that the first author's stability theorem for the spaces of rational maps from CP^m to CP^n extends to the spaces of continuous morphisms from CP^m to X, essentially, with the same proof. In the case of curves, our result improves the known bounds for the stabilization dimension.
In this article we investigate algebraic morphisms between toric varieties. Given presentations of toric varieties as quotients we are interested in the question when a morphism admits a lifting to these quotient presentations. We show that this can be completely answered in terms of invariant divisors. As an application we prove that two toric varieties, which are isomorphic as abstract algebraic varieties, are even isomorphic as toric varieties. This generalizes a well-known result of Demushkin on affine toric varieties.
We prove that every log crepant birational morphism between log terminal surfaces is decomposed into log-flopping type divisorial contraction morphisms and log blow-downs. Repeating these two kinds of contractions we reach a minimal log minimal surface from any log minimal surface.
We build two embedded resolution procedures of a quasi-ordinary singularity of complex analytic hypersurface, by using toric morphisms which depend only on the characteristic monomials associated to a quasi-ordinary projection of the singularity. This result answers an open problem of Lipman in Equisingularity and simultaneous resolution of singularities, Resolution of Singularities, Progress in Mathematics No. 181, 2000, 485-503. In the first procedure the singularity is embedded as hypersurface. In the second procedure, which is inspired by a work of Goldin and Teissier for plane curves (see…
This paper has been withdrawn by the author. It is not true that plt blow-up of toric singularity is toric (in dimension 3 too) and the first main theorem is incorrect also. The error is in deformation argument. I am grateful to Ivan Cheltsov for discussions.

We give a new description of the data needed to specify a morphism from a scheme to a toric Deligne-Mumford stack. The description is given in terms of a collection of line bundles and sections which satisfy certain conditions. As applications, we characterize any toric Deligne-Mumford stack as a product of roots of line bundles over the rigidified stack, describe the torus action, describe morphisms between toric Deligne-Mumford stacks with complete coarse moduli spaces in terms of homogeneous polynomials, and compare two different definitions of toric stacks.
Given a projective contraction $π\colon X\rightarrow Z$ and a log canonical pair $(X, B)$ such that $-(K_X+B)$ is nef over a neighborhood of a closed point $z\in Z$, one can define an invariant, the complexity of $(X, B)$ over $z \in Z$, comparing the dimension of $X$ and the relative Picard number of $X/Z$ with the sum of the coefficients of those components of $B$ intersecting the fibre over $z$. We prove that the complexity of $(X,B)$ over $z\in Z$ is non-negative and that when it is zero then $(X,\lfloor B \rfloor) \rightarrow Z$ is formally isomorphic to a morphism of toric varieties arou…
We use the liftability of the relative Frobenius morphism of toric varieties and the strong liftability of toric varieties to prove the Bott vanishing theorem, the degeneration of the Hodge to de Rham spectral sequence and the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for log pairs on toric varieties in positive characteristic. These results generalize those results of Danilov, Buch-Thomsen-Lauritzen-Mehta, Mustata and Fujino to the case where concerned Weil divisors are not necessarily torus invariant.
We investigate the possibility of embedding minimal abelian surfaces in smooth toric 4-folds with Picard number 2. The existence of such an embedding imposes conditions on the 4-fold, which we partly describe. On the other hand, we exhibit such embeddings in a special case, using a simple description of morphisms into smooth toric varieties.
We introduce the fibred toric varieties as equivariant $\mathbb{C}P^r$ bundles over lower dimensional toric varieties. An equivalent characterization is that the natural morphisms on them degenerate to bundle projections in the context of variation of toric varieties as GIT quotients. Our main observation is that these fibred toric varieties also arise naturally in the variation of hyperkähler varieties, namely, the fibred toric varieties are contained in the exceptional sets of the hyperkähler natural morphisms and the Mukai flops.
In this paper we will introduce a certain type of morphisms of log schemes (in the sense of Fontaine, Illusie, and Kato) and investigate their moduli. Then by applying this we define a notion of toric algebraic stacks over arbitrary schemes, which may be regarded as torus embeddings within the framework of algebraic stacks, and study some basic properties. Furthermore, we study the stack-theoretic analogue of toroidal embeddings.
We translate the equivariant decomposition theorem (in the case of a proper morphism of toric varieties) in to the language of combinatorially defined ``shifted minimal complexes''.
We study the greatest common divisor problem for torus invariant blowing-up morphisms of nonsingular toric Fano varieties. Our main result applies the theory of Okounkov bodies together with an arithmetic form of Cartan's Second Main theorem, which has been established by Ru and Vojta. It also builds on Silverman's geometric concept of greatest common divisor. As a special case of our results, we deduce a bound for the generalized greatest common divisor of pairs of nonzero algebraic numbers.
This article is a continuation of [Kub18], which proves that if a $3$-dimensional affine normal quasihomogeneous $SL(2)$-variety $E$ is toric, then it has an equivariant resolution of singularities given by an invariant Hilbert scheme $\mathcal H$. In this article, we consider the case where $E$ is non-toric and show that the Hilbert-Chow morphism $γ: \mathcal H \to E$ is a resolution of singularities and that $\mathcal H$ is isomorphic to the minimal resolution of a weighted blow-up of $E$.
A class of noncommutative spaces, named `soft noncommutative schemes via toric geometry', are constructed and the mathematical model for (dynamical/nonsolitonic, complex algebraic) D-branes on such a noncommutative space, following arXiv:0709.1515 [math.AG] (D(1)), is given. Any algebraic Calabi-Yau space that arises from a complete intersection in a smooth toric variety can embed as a commutative closed subscheme of some soft noncommutative scheme. Along the study, the notion of `soft noncommutative toric schemes' associated to a (simplicial, maximal cone of index $1$) fan, `invertible sheave…
Let X be a smooth projective variety with the action of the n dimensional torus. The article describes the moduli space of torus equivariant morphisms from stable toric varieties into X as the inverse limit of the GIT quotients of X and their flips when these spaces are enhanced with a naturally associated Deligne-Mumford stack structure. This description is used for constructing a class in the Chow group of the moduli space of dimension dim(X)-n which is invariant to equivariant deformations of X.
The semistable minimal model program is a special case of the minimal model program concerning 3-folds fibred over a curve and birational morphisms preserving this structure. We classify semistable divisorial contractions which contract the exceptional divisor to a normal point of a fibre. Our results can be applied to describe compact moduli spaces of surfaces.
We show that for $α\in (2/3, 7/10)$, the log canonical model $\bar M_4(α)$ of the pair $(\bar M_4, αδ)$ is isomorphic to the moduli space $\bar M_4^{hs}$ of h-semistable curves, and that there is a birational morphism $Ξ: \bar M_4^{hs} \to \bar M_4(2/3)$ that contracts the locus of curves $C_1\cup_p C_2$ consisting of genus two curves meeting in a node $p$ such that $p$ is a Weierstrass point of $C_1$ or $C_2$. To obtain this morphism, we construct a compact moduli space $\bar M_{2,1}^{hs}$ of pointed genus two curves that have nodes, ordinary cusps and tacnodes as singularity, and prove that …
We call a sheaf on an algebraic variety immaculate if it lacks any cohomology including the zero-th one, that is, if the derived version of the global section functor vanishes. Such sheaves are the basic tools when building exceptional sequences, investigating the diagonal property, or the toric Frobenius morphism. In the present paper we focus on line bundles on toric varieties. First, we present a possibility of understanding their cohomology in terms of their (generalized) momentum polytopes. Then we present a method to exhibit the entire locus of immaculate divisors within the class group.…
The purpose of this paper and its sequel (Toric Stacks II) is to introduce and develop a theory of toric stacks which encompasses and extends the notions of toric stacks defined in [Laf02, BCS05, FMN10, Iwa09, Sat12, Tyo12], as well as classical toric varieties. In this paper, we define a \emph{toric stack} as a quotient of a toric variety by a subgroup of its torus (we also define a generically stacky version). Any toric stack arises from a combinatorial gadget called a \emph{stacky fan}. We develop a dictionary between the combinatorics of stacky fans and the geometry of toric stacks, stress…
We prove that the cohomology of the moduli space of morphisms of a fixed finite degree from a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g$ to a complete simplicial toric variety $\mathbb{P}(Σ)$, denoted by the rational polyhedral fan $Σ$, stabilizes. As an arithmetic consequence we obtain a resolution of the Batyrev-Manin conjecture for toric varieties over global function fields in all but finitely many characteristics.
Suppose that f is a projective birational morphism with at most one-dimensional fibres between d-dimensional varieties X and Y, satisfying ${\bf R}f_* \mathcal{O}_X = \mathcal{O}_Y$. Consider the locus L in Y over which f is not an isomorphism. Taking the scheme-theoretic fibre C over any closed point of L, we construct algebras $A_{fib}$ and $A_{con}$ which prorepresent the functors of commutative deformations of C, and noncommutative deformations of the reduced fibre, respectively. Our main theorem is that the algebras $A_{con}$ recover L, and in general the commutative deformations of neith…
In this paper we show that a smooth toric variety $X$ of Picard number $r\leq 3$ always admits a nef primitive collection supported on a hyperplane admitting non-trivial intersection with the cone $\Nef(X)$ of numerically effective divisors and cutting a facet of the pseudo-effective cone $\Eff(X)$, that is $\Nef(X)\cap\partial\overline{\Eff}(X)\neq\{0\}$. In particular this means that $X$ admits non-trivial and non-big numerically effective divisors. Geometrically this guarantees the existence of a fiber type contraction morphism over a smooth toric variety of dimension and Picard number lowe…
