We prove a formula which compares intersection numbers of conormal varieties of two projective varieties and their dual varieties.
When one of them is linear, we can recover the usual Plucker formula for the degree of the dual variety.
The basic strategy of the proof is to study a category of Lagrangian subvarieties in the cotangent bundle of a projective space under a birational transformation.
Every Grassmannian, in its Plücker embedding, is defined by quadratic polynomials. We prove a vast, qualitative, generalisation of this fact to what we call Plücker varieties. A Plücker variety is in fact a family of varieties in exterior powers of vector spaces that, like the Grassmannian, is functorial in the vector space and behaves well under duals. A special case of our result says that for each fixed natural number k, the k-th secant variety of any Plücker-embedded Grassmannian is defined in bounded degree independent of the Grassmannian. Our approach is to take the limit of a Plücker va…
We prove that the divisor class group of any open Richardson variety in the Grassmannian is trivial. Our proof uses Nagata's criterion, localizing the coordinate ring at a suitable set of Plücker coordinates. We prove that these Plücker coordinates are prime elements by showing that the subscheme they define is an open subscheme of a positroid variety. Our results hold over any field and over the integers.
We study the intersection theory of complex Lagrangian subvarieties inside holomorphic symplectic manifolds. In particular, we study their behaviour under Mukai flops and give a rigorous proof of the Plücker type formula for Legendre dual subvarieties written down by the second author before. Then we apply the formula to study projective dual varieties in projective spaces.
We study the projective behavior, mainly with respect to osculating spaces and secant varieties, of Lagrangian Grassmannians and Spinor varieties. We prove that these varieties have osculating dimension smaller than expected. Furthermore, we give numerical conditions ensuring the non secant defectivity of Lagrangian Grassmannians in their Plücker embedding and of Spinor varieties in both their Plücker and Spinor embeddings.
Matroid varieties are the closures in the Grassmannian of sets of points defined by specifying which Plücker coordinates vanish and which don't. In general these varieties are very ill-behaved, but in many cases one can estimate their codimension by keeping careful track of the conditions imposed by the vanishing of each Plücker coordinates on the columns of the matrix representing a point of the Grassmannian. This paper presents a way to make this procedure precise, producing a number for each matroid variety called its expected codimension that can be computed combinatorially solely from the…
We prove the (equivariant) noetherian property for a wide class of varieties generalizing the class of Plucker varieties (Theorem 1). It improves previous results of Draisma-Eggermont who treated the case of bounded Plucker varieties. Key ingredient of our proof is the constructive proof of the equivariant noetherianity for the hyper-Pfaffians (Theorem 36) which implies the equivariant noetherianity of the dual infinite wedge.
Let $C$ be a generic complex plane plane curve with a given Newton polygon $P$. We compute the number of its inflection points and bitangents (equivalently, the number of singularities of the projectively dual curve $C^\vee$). We also prove that $C^\vee$ has no singularities other than nodes and cusps for large enough polygons $P$.
Let $S\subset\Ps^r$ ($r\geq 5$) be a nondegenerate, irreducible, smooth, complex, projective surface of degree $d$. Let $δ_S$ be the number of double points of a general projection of $S$ to $\Ps^4$. In the present paper we prove that $ δ_S\leq{\binom {d-2} {2}}$, with equality if and only if $S$ is a rational scroll. Extensions to higher dimensions are discussed.
Homological Projective duality (HP-duality) theory, introduced by Kuznetsov [42], is one of the most powerful frameworks in the homological study of algebraic geometry. The main result (HP-duality theorem) of the theory gives complete descriptions of bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves of (dual) linear sections of HP-dual varieties. We show the theorem also holds for more general intersections beyond linear sections. More explicitly, for a given HP-dual pair $(X,Y)$, then analogue of HP-duality theorem holds for their intersections with another HP-dual pair $(S,T)$, provided that th…
We prove a simultaneous generalization of the classical Riemann-Hurwitz and Plucker formulas, addressing the total inflection of a morphism from a (smooth, projective) curve to an arbitrary (smooth, projective) higher-dimensional variety. Our definition of ramification is relative to an algebraic family of divisors on the target variety, and our formula is obtained using the theory of refined top Chern classes. In assigning multiplicities to ramification points, we frequently have to consider excess degeneracy loci, but we are able to show nonetheless that the multiplicities are always nonnega…
An enumerative problem on a variety $V$ is usually solved by reduction to intersection theory in the cohomology of a compactification of $V$. However, if the problem is invariant under a "nice" group action on $V$ (so that $V$ is spherical), then many authors suggested a better home for intersection theory: the direct limit of the cohomology rings of all equivariant compactifications of $V$. We call this limit the affine cohomology of $V$ and construct affine characteristic classes of subvarieties of a complex torus, taking values in the affine cohomology of the torus. This allows us to make t…
Matroid varieties are the closures in the Grassmannian of sets of points defined by specifying which Plücker coordinates vanish and which don't --- the set of nonvanishing Plücker coordinates forms a well-studied object called a matroid. Many problems in enumerative geometry could be solved if there were an efficient way to compute the cohomology class of a matroid variety in an efficient way just from the combinatorial data contained in the matroid itself. Unfortunately, in full generality, this problem is known to be completely intractable. In this thesis, we explore two attempts to get a ha…
Let $Y$ be a smooth dimensionally transverse intersection of the Grassmannian $\hbox{Gr}(2,n)$ with 3 Plücker hyperplanes. We show that $Y$ admits a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen-Vial. As a consequence, a certain tautological subring of the Chow ring of powers of $Y$ injects into cohomology.
We study classical invariants for plane curve singularities $f\in K[[x,y]]$, $K$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 0$: Milnor number, delta invariant, kappa invariant and multiplicity. It is known, in characteristic zero, that $μ(f)=2δ(f)-r(f)+1$ and that $κ(f)=2δ(f)-r(f)+\mathrm{mt}(f)$. For arbitrary characteristic, Deligne prove that there is always the inequality $μ(f)\geq 2δ(f)-r(f)+1$ by showing that $μ(f)-\left( 2δ(f)-r(f)+1\right)$ measures the wild vanishing cycles. By introducing new invariants $γ,\tildeγ$, we prove in this note that $κ(f)\geq γ(f)+\mathrm{mt}(f)…
We observe that linear relations among Chern-Mather classes of projective varieties are preserved by projective duality. We deduce the existence of an explicit involution on a part of the Chow group of projective space, encoding the effect of duality on Chern-Mather classes. Applications include Plücker formulae, constraints on self-dual varieties, generalizations to singular varieties of classical formulas for the degree of the dual and the dual defect, formulas for the Euclidean distance degree, and computations of Chern-Mather classes and local Euler obstructions for cones.
For a given irreducible projective variety $X$, the closure of the set of all hyperplanes containing tangents to $X$ is the projectively dual variety $X^{\vee}$. We study the singular locus of projectively dual varieties of certain Segre-Plücker embeddings in series of papers. In this work we give a classification of the irreducible components of the singular locus of the dual Grassmannian. Basically, it admits two components: cusp type and node type which are degeneracies of a certain Hessian matrix, and the closure of the set of tangent planes having more than one critical point, respectivel…
We compute the degree of the generalized Plücker embedding $κ$ of a Quot scheme $X$ over $\PP^1$. The space $X$ can also be considered as a compactification of the space of algebraic maps of a fixed degree from $\PP^1$ to the Grassmanian $\rm{Grass}(m,n)$. Then the degree of the embedded variety $κ(X)$ can be interpreted as an intersection product of pullbacks of cohomology classes from $\rm{Grass}(m,n)$ through the map $ψ$ that evaluates a map from $\PP^1$ at a point $x\in \PP^1$. We show that our formula for the degree verifies the formula for these intersection products predicted by physici…
This paper introduces a class of smooth projective varieties that generalise and share many properties with partial flag varieties of type A. The quiver flag variety M_\vartheta(Q,r) of a finite acyclic quiver Q (with a unique source) and a dimension vector r is a fine moduli space of stable representations of Q. Quiver flag varieties are Mori Dream Spaces, they are obtained via a tower of Grassmann bundles, and their bounded derived category of coherent sheaves is generated by a tilting bundle. We define the multigraded linear series of a weakly exceptional sequence of locally free sheaves E …
Vakil studied the intersection theory of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian in a very direct way: he degenerated the intersection of a Schubert variety X_mu and opposite Schubert variety X^nu to a union {X^lambda}, with repetition. This degeneration proceeds in stages, and along the way he met a collection of more complicated subvarieties, which he identified as the closures of certain locally closed sets. We show that Vakil's varieties are _positroid varieties_, which in particular shows they are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, have rational singularities, and are defined by the vanishing of Plüc…
While the intersection of the Grassmannian Bruhat decompositions for all coordinate flags is an intractable mess, the intersection of only the {\em cyclic shifts} of one Bruhat decomposition turns out to have many of the good properties of the Bruhat and Richardson decompositions. This decomposition coincides with the projection of the Richardson stratification of the flag manifold, studied by Lusztig, Rietsch, and Brown-Goodearl-Yakimov. However, its cyclic-invariance is hidden in this description. Postnikov gave many cyclic-invariant ways to index the strata, and we give a new one, by a subs…
The image of the higher Gauss map for a projective variety is discussed. The notion of higher Gauss maps here was introduced by Fyodor L. Zak as a generalization of both ordinary Gauss maps and conormal maps. The main result is a closed formula for the degree of those images of Veronese varieties. This yields a generalization of a classical formula by George Boole on the degree of the dual varieties of Veronese varieties in 1844. As an application of our formula, degree bounds for higher Gauss map images of Veronese varieties are given.
We give explicit formulas for the dimensions and the degrees of $A$-discriminant varieties introduced by Gelfand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky. Our formulas can be applied also to the case where the $A$-discriminant varieties are higher-codimensional and their degrees are described by the geometry of the configurations $A$. Moreover combinatorial formulas for the Euler obstructions of general (not necessarily normal) toric varieties will be also given.
While the intersection of the Grassmannian Bruhat decompositions for all coordinate flags is an intractable mess, the intersection of only the cyclic shifts of one Bruhat decomposition turns out to have many of the good properties of the Bruhat and Richardson decompositions. This decomposition coincides with the projection of the Richardson stratification of the flag manifold, studied by Lusztig, Rietsch, Brown-Goodearl-Yakimov and the present authors. However, its cyclic-invariance is hidden in this description. Postnikov gave many cyclic-invariant ways to index the strata, and we give a new …
Considering quasismooth varieities as global $\CC^*$ quotients, we present a Riemann-Roch formula via general Riemann-Roch formula for quotient stacks. Furthermore, we give a parcing formula for Hilbert series associated to a polarized quasismooth projectively Gorenstein algebraic varieties with orbifold curves and dissident points, which is an extension of the result in \cite{BRZ}.
Let $X$ be a non-singular quasi-projective variety over a field, and let $\mathcal E$ be a vector bundle over $X$. Let $\mathbb G_X({d}, \mathcal E)$ be the Grassmann bundle of $\mathcal E$ over $X$ parametrizing corank $d$ subbundles of $\mathcal E$, and denote by $θ$ the Plücker class of $\mathbb G_X({d}, \mathcal E)$, that is, the first Chern class of the universal quotient bundle over $\mathbb G_X({d}, \mathcal E)$. In this short note, a closed formula for the push-forward of powers of $θ$ is given in terms of the Schur polynomials in Segre classes of $\mathcal E$, which yields a degree fo…
This paper provides a formula for the Mather-Jacobian multiplier ideals of torus invariant ideals on (not necessarily normal) toric varieties that generalizes Howald's formula for the multiplier ideal of monomial ideals in a polynomial ring.
We study the motivic Serre invariant of a smoothly bounded algebraic or rigid variety $X$ over a complete discretely valued field $K$ with perfect residue field $k$. If $K$ has characteristic zero, we extend the definition to arbitrary $K$-varieties using Bittner's presentation of the Grothendieck ring and a process of Néron smoothening of pairs of varieties. The motivic Serre invariant can be considered as a measure for the set of unramified points on $X$. Under certain tameness conditions, it admits a cohomological interpretation by means of a trace formula. In the curve case, we use T. Sait…
To an algebraic variety equipped with an involution, we associate a cycle class in the modulo two Chow group of its fixed locus. This association is functorial with respect to proper morphisms having a degree and preserving the involutions. Specialising to the exchange involution of the square of a complete variety, we obtain Rost's degree formula in arbitrary characteristic (this formula was proved by Rost/Merkurjev in characteristic not two).
In this paper we give an explicit formula for the Riemann-Roch map for singular schemes which are quotients of smooth schemes by diagonalizable groups. As an application we obtain a simple proof of a formula for the Todd class of a simplicial toric variety. An equivariant version of this formula was previously obtained for complete simplicial toric varieties by Brion and Vergne using different techniques.
We prove a formula, originally due to Feit and Fine, for the class of the commuting variety in the Grothendieck group of varieties. Our method, which uses a power structure on the Grothendieck group of stacks, allows us to prove several refinements and generalizations of the Feit-Fine formula. Our main application is to motivic Donaldson-Thomas theory.
We consider the Quot scheme, R_{d}, compactifying the space of degree d maps from the projective line to the Grassmannian of lines. We give an algorithm for computing the degree of R_{d} under a "generalized Plücker embedding", this is a certain Gromov-Witten invariant. The approach is to apply the Atiyah-Bott localization formula for the natural C^{*}-action on R_{d}. These numbers can be obtained directly from Vafa-Intriligator formula.
The purpose of this short note is to prove a formula for the Chern-Mather classes of a toric variety in terms of its orbits and the local Euler obstructions at general points of each orbit (Theorem 2). We use the general definition of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes (see [7]) and their special expression in case of a toric variety (see [2]). As a corollary, we obtain a formula by Matsui-Takeuchi [8, Corollary 1.6]. Alternatively, one could deduce the formula of Theorem 2 from the Matsui-Takeuchi formula, by using our general result [11, Theoreme 3] for the degree of the polar varieties i…
The purpose of this paper is to give an explicit formula which allows one to compute the dimension of the cohomology groups of the sheaf $Ω_¶^p(D)$ of p-th differential forms of Zariski twisted by an ample invertible sheaf on a complete simplicial toric variety. The formula involves some combinatorial sums of integer points over all faces of the support polytope for ${Ø_X}(D)$. We also introduce a new combinatorial object, the so-called p-th Hilbert-Erhart polynomial, which generalizes the usual notion and behaves similar. Namely, there exists a generalization of the inversion law for a usual …
The goal of this note is to explain a derivation of the formulas for the local Euler obstructions of determinantal varieties of general, symmetric and skew-symmetric matrices, by studying the invariant de Rham complex and using character formulas for simple equivariant $D$-modules. These calculations are then combined with standard arguments involving Kashiwara's local index formula and the description of characteristic cycles of simple equivariant $D$-modules. The formulas are implicit in the work of Boe and Fu, and in the case of general matrices they have also been obtained recently by Gaff…
We prove a generalization of Demailly-Ein-Lazarsfeld's subadditivity formula and Mustata's summation formula for multiplier ideals to the case of singular varieties, using characteristic $p$ methods. As an application of our formula, we improve Hochster-Huneke's result on the growth of symbolic powers of ideals in singular affine algebras.
We survey Colmez's theory and conjecture about the Faltings height and a product formula for the periods of abelian varieties with complex multiplication, along with the function field analog developed by the authors. In this analog, abelian varieties are replaced by Drinfeld modules and $A$-motives. We also explain the necessary background on abelian varieties, Drinfeld modules and $A$-motives, including their cohomology theories and comparison isomorphisms and their theory of complex multiplication.
In this paper, we prove effective upper bounds for effective sections of line bundles on projective varieties and hermitian line bundles on arithmetic varieties in terms of the volumes. They are effective versions of the Hilbert--Samuel formula and the arithmetic Hilbert--Samuel formula.
We give a new proof of the Jantzen sum formula for integral representations of Chevalley schemes over Spec Z. This is done by applying the fixed point formula of Lefschetz type in Arakelov geometry to generalized flag varieties. Our proof involves the computation of the equivariant Ray-Singer torsion for all equivariant bundles over complex homogeneous spaces. Furthermore, we find several explicit formulae for the global height of any generalized flag variety.
We introduce a division formula on a possibly singular projective subvariety $X$ of complex projective space $\Pk^N$, which, e.g., provides explicit representations of solutions to various polynomial division problems on the affine part of $X$. Especially we consider a global effective version of the Brian\c con-Skoda-Huneke theorem.
We express the Frobenius-Hecke traces on the compactly supported cohomology of a Shimura variety of abelian type in terms of elliptic parts of stable Arthur-Selberg trace formulas for the endoscopic groups. This confirms predictions of Langlands and Kottwitz at primes where the level is hyperspecial.
We provide a formula for the generating series of the zeta function $Z(X,t)$ of symmetric powers $Sym^n X$ of varieties over finite fields. This realizes $Z(X,t)$ as an exponentiable motivic measure whose associated Kapranov motivic zeta function takes values in $W(R)$ the big Witt ring of $R=W(\mathbb{Z})$. We apply our formula to compute $Z(Sym^n X,t)$ in a number of explicit cases. Moreover, we show that all $λ$-ring motivic measures have zeta functions which are exponentiable. In this setting, the formula for $Z(X,t)$ takes the form of a MacDonald formula for the zeta function.
We give explicit MacPherson cycles for the Chern-MacPherson class of a closed affine algebraic variety $X$ and for any constructible function $α$ with respect to a complex algebraic Whitney stratification of $X$. We define generalized degrees of the global polar varieties and of the MacPherson cycles and we prove a global index formula for the Euler characteristic of $α$. Whenever $α$ is the Euler obstruction of $X$, this index formula specializes to the Seade-Tibar-Verjovsky global counterpart of the Le-Teissier formula for the local Euler obstruction.
We give a new proof of a slightly weaker form of a theorem of P. Colmez. This theorem gives a formula for the Faltings height of abelian varieties with complex multiplication by a C.M. field whose Galois group over $\bf Q$ is abelian; it reduces to the formula of Chowla and Selberg in the case of elliptic curves. We show that the formula can be deduced from the arithmetic fixed point formula proved in the first paper of the series. Our proof is intrinsic in the sense that it does not rely on the computation of the periods of any particular abelian variety.
We prove a type-uniform Chevalley formula for multiplication with divisor classes in the equivariant quantum $K$-theory ring of any cominuscule flag variety $G/P$. We also prove that multiplication with divisor classes determines the equivariant quantum $K$-theory of arbitrary flag varieties. These results prove a conjecture of Gorbounov and Korff concerning the equivariant quantum $K$-theory of Grassmannians of Lie type A.
A prism tableau is a set of reverse semistandard tableaux, each positioned within an ambient grid. Prism tableaux were introduced to provide a formula for the Schubert polynomials of A. Lascoux and M.P. Schützenberger. This formula directly generalizes the well known expression for Schur polynomials as a sum over semistandard tableaux. Alternating sign matrix varieties generalize the matrix Schubert varieties of W. Fulton. We use prism tableaux to give a formula for the multidegree of an alternating sign matrix variety.
We construct a 3-dimensional complete intersection toric variety on which the subadditivity formula doesn't hold, answering negatively a question by Takagi and Watanabe. A combinatorial proof of the subadditivity formula on 2-dimensional normal toric varieties is also provided.
We prove formulas for the p-adic logarithm of quaternionic Darmon points on p-adic tori and modular abelian varieties over Q having purely multiplicative reduction at p. These formulas are amenable to explicit computations and are the first to treat Stark-Heegner type points on higher-dimensional abelian varieties.
We give a formula for the Eisenstein cohomology of local systems on the partial compactification of the moduli of principally polarized abelian varieties given by rank 1 degenerations. For genus 2 we give a formula for the full Eisenstein cohomology.
We express the order of the pole and the leading coefficient of the L-function of a (large class of) -adic coefficients (any prime) over a quasi-projective variety over a finite field of characteristic p. This is a generalization of the result of Milne-Ramachandran with coefficients. The new key ingredient is the use of F-gauges and their equivalence in the derived category with Raynaud modules proved by Ekedahl.
We show that Witt groups of spinor varieties (aka.\ maximal isotropic Grassmannians) can be presented by combinatorial objects called even shifted young diagram. Our method relies on the Blow-up setup of Balmer-Calmès, and we investigate the connecting homomorphism of the localization sequence via the projective bundle formula of Walter-Nenashev, the projection formula of Calmès-Hornbostel and the excess intersection formula of Fasel.
Let $K$ be a field finitely generated over ${\Q}$, and $A$ an Abelian variety defined over $K$. Then by the Mordell-Weil Theorem, the set of rational points $A(K)$ is a finitely-generated Abelian group. In this paper, assuming Tate's Conjecture on algebraic cycles, we prove a limit formula for the Mordell-Weil rank of an arbitrary family of Abelian varieties $A$ over a number field $k$; this is the Abelian fibration analogue of the Nagao formula for elliptic surfaces $E$, originally conjectured by Nagao, and proven by Rosen and Silverman to be equivalent to Tate's Conjecture for $E$. We also g…
