Let $X$ be a non-singular quasi-projective variety over a field, and let $\mathcal E$ be a vector bundle over $X$. Let $\mathbb G_X({d}, \mathcal E)$ be the Grassmann bundle of $\mathcal E$ over $X$ parametrizing corank $d$ subbundles of $\mathcal E$, and denote by $θ$ the Plücker class of $\mathbb G_X({d}, \mathcal E)$, that is, the first Chern class of the universal quotient bundle over $\mathbb G_X({d}, \mathcal E)$. In this short note, a closed formula for the push-forward of powers of $θ$ is given in terms of the Schur polynomials in Segre classes of $\mathcal E$, which yields a degree formula for $\mathbb G_X({d}, \mathcal E)$ with respect to $θ$ when $X$ is projective and $\wedge ^d \mathcal E$ is very ample.
In this paper, we characterize homogeneous arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) bundles over isotropic Grassmannians of types $B$, $C$ and $D$ in term of step matrices. We show that there are only finitely many irreducible homogeneous ACM bundles by twisting line bundles over these isotropic Grassmannians. So we classify all homogeneous ACM bundles over isotropic Grassmannians combining the results on usual Grassmannians by Costa and Mir{ó}-Roig. Moreover, if the irreducible initialized homogeneous ACM bundles correspond to some special highest weights, then they can be characterized by succinc…
We rework the Mori-Mukai classification of Fano 3-folds, by describing each of the 105 families via biregular models as zero loci of general global sections of homogeneous vector bundles over products of Grassmannians.
We show that there is an affine Schubert variety in the infinite dimensional partial Flag variety (associated to the two- step parabolic subgroup of the Kac-Moody group {\hat SL(n)}, corresponding to omitting α_0,α_d) which is a natural compactification of the cotangent bundle to the Grassmann variety.
If $¶^\infty$ is the projective ind-space, i.e. $¶^\infty$ is the inductive limit of linear embeddings of complex projective spaces, the Barth-Van de Ven-Tyurin (BVT) Theorem claims that every finite rank vector bundle on $¶^\infty$ is isomorphic to a direct sum of line bundles. We extend this theorem to general sequences of morphisms between projective spaces by proving that, if there are infinitely many morphisms of degree higher than one, every vector bundle of finite rank on the inductive limit is trivial. We then establish a relative version of these results, and apply it to the study of …
We give an explicit parametrization of the Hilbert schemes of rational curves C in P^n having a given splitting type of the restricted tangent bundle from P^n to C. The adopted technique uses the description of such curves as projections of a rational normal curve from a suitable linear vertex and a classification of those vertices that correspond to the required splitting type of the restricted tangent bundle. This classification involves the study of a suitable PGL(2) action on the relevant Grassmannian variety.
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective curve, and let $E$ be a vector bundle on $X$ which is not semistable. For a suitably chosen integer $r$, let $\text{Gr}(E)$ be the Grassmann bundle over $X$ that parametrizes the quotients of the fibers of $E$ of dimension $r$. Assuming some numerical conditions on the Harder-Narasimhan filtration of $E$, we study Seshadri constants of ample line bundles on $\text{Gr}(E)$. In many cases, we give the precise value of Seshadri constant. Our results generalize various known results for ${\rm rank}(E)=2$.
Let Gr(2, E) be the Grassmann bundle of two-planes associated to a general bundle E over a curve X. We prove that an embedding of Gr(2, E) by a certain twist of the relative Plücker map is not secant defective. This yields a new and more geometric proof of the Hirschowitz-type bound on the Lagrangian Segre invariant for orthogonal bundles over X, analogous to those given for vector bundles and symplectic bundles in [2, 3]. From the non-defectivity we also deduce an interesting feature of a general orthogonal bundle over X, contrasting with the classical and symplectic cases: Any maximal Lagran…
Let G be a simple simply-connected group scheme over a regular local scheme U. Let E be a principal G-bundle over A^1_U trivial away from a subscheme finite over U. We show that E is not necessarily trivial and give some criteria of triviality. To this end we define affine Grassmannians for group schemes and study their Bruhat decompositions for semi-simple group schemes. We also give examples of principal G-bundles over A^1_U with split G such that the bundles are not isomorphic to pull-backs from U.
We show that intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable bundles of coprime rank and degree over a smooth complex curve can be recovered as highest-degree asymptotics in formulas of Vafa-Intriligator type. In particular, we explicitly evaluate all intersection numbers appearing in the Verlinde formula. Our results are in agreement with previous computations of Witten, Jeffrey-Kirwan and Liu. Moreover, we prove the vanishing of certain intersections on a suitable Quot scheme which can be interpreted as giving equations between counts of maps to the Grassmannian.
Let $X$ be a non-singular quasi-projective variety over a field, and let $\mathcal E$ be a vector bundle over $X$. Let $\mathbb G_X({d}, \mathcal E)$ be the Grassmann bundle of $\mathcal E$ over $X$ parametrizing corank $d$ subbundles of $\mathcal E$ with projection $π: {\mathbb G_X({d}, \mathcal E)} \to X$, and let $ \mathcal Q \gets π^*\mathcal E$ be the universal quotient bundle of rank $d$. In this article, a closed formula for $π_{*}\operatorname{ch} (\det \mathcal Q)$, the push-forward of the Chern character of the Plücker line bundle $\det \mathcal Q$ by $π$ is given in terms of the Seg…
Let $E$ be the tilting bundle on the Grassmannian $\text{Gr}(n,r)$ of $r$-dimensional quotients of $\Bbbk^n$ constructed by Kapranov. Buchweitz, Leuschke and Van den Bergh introduced a quiver $Q$ and a surjective $\Bbbk$-algebra homomorphism $Φ\colon\Bbbk Q\rightarrow A=\text{End}(E)$, together with a recipe on how the kernel may be computed. In this paper, for the case $r=2$ we give a new, direct proof that $Φ$ is surjective and then complete the picture by calculating the ideal of relations explicitly. As an application, we then use this presentation to show that $\text{Gr}(n,2)$ is isomorph…
In this paper we study smooth complex projective varieties $X$ containing a Grassmannian of lines $G(1,r)$ which appears as the zero locus of a section of a rank two nef vector bundle $E$. Among other things we prove that the bundle $E$ cannot be ample.
We classify rank two Fano bundles over the Grassmannian of lines $\G(1,4)$. In particular we show that the only non-split rank two Fano bundle over $\G(1,4)$ is, up to a twist, the universal quotient bundle $\cQ$. This completes the classification of rank two Fano bundles over Grassmannians of lines.
Let $X$ be a Fano manifold which is the zero scheme of a general global section $s$ in an irreducible homogenous vector bundle over a Grassmannian. We prove that the restriction of the Plücker embedding embeds $X$ projectively normal, and that every small deformation of $X$ comes from a deformation of the section $s$. These results are strengthened in the case of Fano 4-folds.
We construct new examples of derived autoequivalences for a family of higher-dimensional Calabi-Yau varieties. Specifically, we take the total spaces of certain natural vector bundles over Grassmannians G(r,d) of r-planes in a d-dimensional vector space, and define endofunctors of the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves associated to these varieties. In the case r=2 we show that these are autoequivalences using the theory of spherical functors. Our autoequivalences naturally generalize the Seidel-Thomas spherical twist for analogous bundles over projective spaces.
Let $E$ be a vector bundle of rank $r$ on a smooth complex projective variety $X$. In this article, we compute the nef and pseudoeffective cones of divisors in the Grassmann bundle $Gr_X(k,E)$ parametrizing $k$-dimensional subspaces of the fibers of $E$, where $1\leq k \leq rank(E)$, under assumptions on $X$ as well as on the vector bundle $E$. In particular, we show that nef cone and the pseudoeffective cone of $Gr_X(k,E)$ coincide if and only if $E$ is a slope semistable bundle on $X$ with $c_2(End(E))=0$. We also discuss about the nefness and ampleness of the universal quotient bundle $Q_k$…
This paper considers curves in Grassmannians which are themselves immersed in projective space by the Plucker map. It is shown that for a generic vector bundle of high enough degree, the image curve lies in a proper linear subvariety of this projective space and satisfies good conditions on syzygies as a curve in this subspace. For very small degree and generic vector bundle, the curve is non- degenerate.
Let Y be a subvariety of a smooth projective variety X, and V a vector bundle on X. Given that the restriction of V to Y splits into a direct sum of line bundles, we ask whether V splits on X. I answer this question in affirmative if holds: Y is a q-ample subvariety of X (for appropriate q), it admits sufficiently many embedded deformations, and is very general within its own deformation space. The result goes beyond the previously known splitting criteria for vector bundles corresponding to restrictions. It allows to treat in a unified way examples arising in totally different situations. I d…
Let U be the tautological subbundle on the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k, n)$. There is a natural morphism $\mathrm{Tot}(U) \to \mathbb{A}^n$. Using it, we give a semiorthogonal decomposition for the bounded derived category $D^b_{\mathrm{coh}}(\mathrm{Tot}(U))$ into several exceptional objects and several copies of $D^b_{\mathrm{coh}}(\mathbb{A}^n)$. We also prove a global version of this result: given a vector bundle $E$ with a regular section $s$, consider a subvariety of the relative Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(k, E)$ of those subspaces which contain the value of $s$. The derived category of t…
Let the vector bundle $\mathcal{E}$ be a deformation of the tangent bundle over the Grassmannian $G(k,n)$. We compute the ring structure of sheaf cohomology valued in exterior powers of $\mathcal{E}$, also known as the polymology. This is the first part of a project studying the quantum sheaf cohomology of Grassmannians with deformations of the tangent bundle, a generalization of ordinary quantum cohomology rings of Grassmannians. A companion physics paper [arXiv:1512.08586] describes physical aspects of the theory, including a conjecture for the quantum sheaf cohomology ring, and numerous exa…
We obtain a sharp bound on the degree of a globally generated vector bundle over a reduced irreducible projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. As an application, we obtain a Del Pezzo-Bertini type theorem on varieties of minimal degree for subvarieties of Grassmannians.
We systematically study the splitting of vector bundles on a smooth, projective variety, whose restriction to the zero locus of a regular section of an ample vector bundle splits. First, we find ampleness and genericity conditions which ensure that the splitting of the vector bundle along the subvariety implies its global splitting. Second, we obtain a simple splitting criterion for vector bundles on the Grassmannian and on partial flag varieties.
We establish a Gysin formula for Schubert bundles and a strong version of the duality theorem in Schubert calculus on Grassmann bundles. We then combine them to compute the fundamental classes of Schubert bundles in Grassmann bundles, which yields a new proof of the Giambelli formula for vector bundles.
In this paper, we study the birational geometry of the Quot schemes of trivial bundles on $\mathbb{P}^1$ by constructing small $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial modifications of the Quot schemes as suitable moduli spaces. We determine all the models which appear in the minimal model program on the Quot schemes. As a corollary, we show that the Quot schemes are Mori dream spaces and log Fano.

We obtain identities involving symmetric and doubly symmetric polynomials. These identities provide a way of handling expressions appearing in the Atiyah-Bott-Berline-Vergne formula for Grassmannians. As corollaries, we obtain formulas for integrals over Grassmannians of characteristic classes of the tautological bundles. Moreover, we provide a valid proof of the Martin formula for the classical Grassmannian.
We give a conjectural formula for sheaves supported on (irreducible) conormal varieties inside the cotangent bundle of the Grassmannian, such that their equivariant $K$-class is given by the partition function of an integrable loop model, and furthermore their $K$-theoretic pushforward to a point is a solution of the level $1$ quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation. We prove these results in the case that the Lagrangian is smooth (hence is the conormal bundle to a subGrassmannian). To compute the pushforward to a point, or equivalently to the affinization, we simultaneously degenerate the Lag…
We show that the space of all holomorphic maps of degree one from the Riemann sphere into a Grassmann manifold is a sphere bundle over a flag manifold. Using the notions of "kernel" and "span" of a map, we completely identify the space of unparameterized maps as well. The illustrative case of maps into the quadric Grassmann manifold is discussed in details and the homology of the corresponding spaces computed.
A special linear Grassmann variety SGr(k,n) is the complement to the zero section of the determinant of the tautological vector bundle over Gr(k,n). For a representable ring cohomology theory A(-) with a special linear orientation and invertible stable Hopf map η, including Witt groups and MSL[η^{-1}], we have A(SGr(2,2n+1))=A(pt)[e]/(e^{2n}), and A(SGr(2,2n)) is a truncated polynomial algebra in two variables over A(pt). A splitting principle for such theories is established. We use the computations for the special linear Grassmann varieties to calculate A(BSL_n) in terms of the homogeneous p…
We first prove an identity involving symmetric polynomials. This identity leads us into exploring the geometry of Lagrangian Grassmannians. As an insight applications, we obtain a formula for the integral over the Lagrangian Grassmannian of a characteristic class of the tautological sub-bundle. Moreover, a relation to that over the ordinary Grassmannian and its application to the degree formula for the Lagrangian Grassmannian are given. Finally, we present further applications to the computation of Schubert structure constants and three-point, degree $1$, genus $0$ Gromov--Witten invariants of…
Let $X_w$ be a Schubert subvariety of a cominuscule Grassmannian $X$, and let $μ:T^*X\rightarrow\mathcal N$ be the Springer map from the cotangent bundle of $X$ to the nilpotent cone $\mathcal N$. In this paper, we construct a resolution of singularities for the conormal variety $T^*_XX_w$ of $X_w$ in $X$. Further, for $X$ the usual or symplectic Grassmannian, we compute a system of equations defining $T^*_XX_w$ as a subvariety of the cotangent bundle $T^*X$ set-theoretically. This also yields a system of defining equations for the corresponding orbital varieties $μ(T^*_XX_w)$. Inspired by the…
Let $\mathcal T_{s,p,n}$ be the canonical blow-up of the Grassmann manifold $G(p,n)$ constructed by blowing up the Plücker coordinate subspaces associated with the parameter $s$. We prove that the higher cohomology groups of the tangent bundle of $\mathcal T_{s,p,n}$ vanish. As an application, $\mathcal T_{s,p,n}$ is locally rigid in the sense of Kodaira-Spencer.
We prove the following statement motivated by the quaternionic linear algebra: there is no continuous map from the quaternionic Grassmannian to the quaternionic projective space such that the pull back of the first Pontryagin class of the tautological bundle over the projective space is equal to the first Pontryagin class of the tautological bundle over the Grassmannian.
In this paper, we prove a generalization of Kempf-Laksov formula for the degeneracy loci classes in even infinitesimal cohomology theories of the Grassmannian bundle and the Lagrangian Grassmannian bundle.
Let $G=SO(8n+4,\mathbb{C})$ ($n\ge 1$). Let $B$ be a Borel subgroup of $G$ containing a maximal torus $T$ of $G.$ Let $P (\supset B)$ denote the maximal parabolic subgroup of $G$ corresponding to the simple root $α_{4n+2}$. In this article, we prove projective normality of the GIT quotients of certain Schubert varieties in the orthogonal Grassmannian $G/P$ with respect to the descent of a suitable $T$-linearized very ample line bundle.
We prove a determinantal formula and Pfaffian formulas that respectively describe the $K$-theoretic degeneracy loci classes for Grassmann bundles and for symplectic Grassmann and odd orthogonal bundles. The former generalizes Damon--Kempf--Laksov's determinantal formula and the latter generalize Pragacz--Kazarian's formula for the Chow ring. As an application, we introduce the factorial $GΘ/ GΘ'$-functions representing the torus equivariant $K$-theoretic Schubert classes of the symplectic and the odd orthogonal Grassmannians, which generalize the (double) theta polynomials of Buch--Kresch--Tam…
