This paper is mainly concerned with applying the theory of M-regularity developed in the previous math.AG/0110003 to the study of linear series given by multiples of ample line bundles on abelian varieties. We define a new invariant of a line bundle, called M-regularity index, which is seen to govern the higher order properties and (partly conjecturally) the defining equations of such embeddings. We prove a general result on the behavior of higher syzygies in embeddings given by multiples of ample bundles whose base locus has no fixed components, extending a conjecture of Lazarsfeld known to be true by work of the first author. This approach also unifies essentially all the previously known results in this direction and is mainly based on vanishing theorems rather than representations of theta groups.
Inspired by a theorem of Gruson-Lazarsfeld-Peskine bounding the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of curves in projective spaces, we bound the Theta-regularity of curves in polarized abelian varieties.
The Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of varieties of degree r and dimension n in the r-dimensional projective space that have an extremal secant line, is at least d-r+n+1. We classify these varieties and show that their regularity is exactly d-r+n+1, as predicted by the regularity conjecture.
In the present sequel to our previous two papers on regularity on abelian varieties, we give a number of new applications of the theory of $M$-regularity to the study of Seshadri constants, Picard bundles, pluricanonical maps on irregular varieties, and semihomogeneous vector bundles.
G. Pareschi and M. Popa give criterions for global generations and surjectivity of multiplication maps of global sections of coherent sheaves on abelian varieties in the theory of M-regularity. In this paper, we generalize some of their criterions via the M-regularity of $\mathbb{Q}$-twisted sheaves. As an application, we show that the M-regularity of a suitable $\mathbb{Q}$-twisted sheaf implies property $(N_p)$ and jet-ampleness for ample line bundles on abelian varieties.
We introduce the notion of Mukai regularity (M-regularity) for coherent sheaves on abelian varieties. The definition is based on the Fourier-Mukai transform, and in a special case depending on the choice of a polarization it parallels and strenghtens the usual Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. Mukai regularity has a large number of applications, ranging from basic properties of linear series on abelian varieties and defining equations for their subvarieties, to higher dimensional type statements and to a study of special classes of vector bundles. Some of these applications are explained here, w…
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is an important invariant of projective algebraic varieties. A well known conjecture due to Eisenbud and Goto gives a bound for regularity in terms of the codimension and degree. This conjecture is known to be true for curves (Gruson-Lazarsfeld-Peskine) and smooth surfaces (Pinkham, Lazarsfeld), but not in general. The purpose of this paper is to give new bounds for the regularity of smooth varieties in dimensions 3 and 4 that are only slightly worse than the optimal ones suggested by the conjecture. Our method yields new bounds up to dimension 14, but as they ge…
This paper aims to focus on Richardson varieties on symplectic groups, especially their combinatorial characterization and defining equations. Schubert varieties and opposite Schubert varieties have profound significance in the study of generalized flag varieties which are not only research objects in algebraic geometry but also ones in representation theory. A more general research object is Richardson variety, which is obtained by the intersection of a Schubert variety and an opposite Schubert variety. The structure of Richardson variety on Grassmannian and its combinatorial characterization…
For a smooth projective variety $X\subset ¶^r$ embedded by the complete linear system, Property $N_p$ has been studied for a long time. On the other hand, Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity conjecture and related problems have been focused for a projective variety which is not necessarily linearly normal. This paper aims to explain the influence of Property $N_p$ on higher normality and defining equations of a smooth variety embedded by sub-linear system. Also we prove a claim about Property $N_p$ of surface scrolls which is a generalization of Green's work in \cite{Green} about Property $N_p$ for…
Inspired by Beauville's recent construction of Ulrich sheaves on abelian surfaces, we pose the question of whether a torsion-free sheaf on a polarized smooth projective variety with Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity 1 is a GV (generic vanishing) sheaf, and present evidence that this question is governed by the positivity of cycles on generalized Brill-Noether loci. We prove that it has an affirmative answer for natural polarizations on many well-known irregular surfaces, as well as some polarizations on ruled threefolds over a curve.
We study projective varieties $X \subset \mathbb{P}^r$ of dimension $n \geq 2$, of codimension $c \geq 3$ and of degree $d \geq c + 3$ that are of maximal sectional regularity, i.e. varieties for which the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $\reg (\mathcal{C})$ of a general linear curve section is equal to $d -c+1$, the maximal possible value (see \cite{GruLPe}). As one of the main results we classify all varieties of maximal sectional regularity. If $X$ is a variety of maximal sectional regularity, then either (a) it is a divisor on a rational normal $(n+1)$-fold scroll $Y \subset \mathbb{P}^{n+3…
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is an important invariant of projective algebraic varieties. A well known conjecture due to Eisenbud and Goto gives a bound for regularity in terms of the codimension and degree,i.e., Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a given variety X is less than or equal to deg(X)-codimension(X)+1. Generic projection methods proved to be effective for the study of regularity of smooth projevtive varieties of dimension at most four(cf.[BM},[K2],[L],[Pi] and [R1]) because there are nice vanishing theorems for cohomology of vector bundles (e.g. the Kodaira-Kawamata-Viehweg vanish…
We give a bound of $k$ for a very ample lattice polytope to be $k$-normal. Equivalently, we give a new combinatorial bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of normal projective toric varieties.
This note computes a Gröbner basis for the ideal defining a union of Schubert varieties. More precisely, it computes a Gröbner basis for unions of schemes given by northwest rank conditions on the space of all matrices of a fixed size. Schemes given by northwest rank conditions include classical determinantal varieties and matrix Schubert varieties--closures of Schubert varieties lifted from the flag manifold to the space of matrices.
We show how to use information about the equations defining secant varieties to smooth projective varieties in order to construct a natural collection of birational transformations. These were first constructed as flips in the case of curves by M. Thaddeus via Geometric Invariant Theory, and the first flip in the sequence was constructed by the author for varieties of arbitrary dimension in an earlier paper. We expose the finer structure of a second flip; again for varieties of arbitrary dimension. We also prove a result on the cubic generation of the secant variety and give some conjectures o…
We describe the relationship between the notions of $M$-regular sheaf and $GV$-sheaf in the case of abelian varieties. The former is a natural strengthening of the latter, and we provide an algebraic criterion characterizing it among the larger class. Based on this we deduce new basic properties of both $M$-regular and $GV$-sheaves. In the second part we give a number of applications of generation criteria for $M$-regular sheaves to the study of Seshadri constants, Picard bundles, pluricanonical maps on irregular varieties, and semihomogeneous vector bundles. This second part of the paper is b…
This article will appear in the proceedings of the AMS Summer Institute in Algebraic Geometry at Santa Cruz, July 1995. The topic is toric ideals, by which I mean the defining ideals of subvarieties of affine or projective space which are parametrized by monomials. Numerous open problems are given.
In this note, we give a bound for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a homogeneous ideal $I$ in terms of the degrees of its generators. We assume that $I$ defines a local complete intersection with log canonical singularities.
For a linear system $|C|$ on a smooth projective surface $S$, whose general element is a smooth, irreducible curve, the Severi variety $V_{|C|, δ}$ is the locally closed subscheme of $|C|$ which parametrizes irreducible curves with only $δ$ nodes as singularities. In this paper we give numerical conditions on the class of divisors and upper-bounds on $δ$ ensuring that the corresponding Severi variety is everywhere smooth of codimension $δ$ in $|C|$ (regular, for short). In particular, we focus on surfaces of general type, since for such surfaces less is known than what is proven for other case…
Let A be a tame quasi-tilted algebra and d the dimension vector of an indecomposable A-module. In the paper we prove that each irreducible component of the variety of A-modules of dimension vector d is regular in codimension one.
Let G denote a connected reductive algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k and let X denote a projective G x G-equivariant embedding of G. The large Schubert varieties in X are the closures of the double cosets BgB, where B denotes a Borel subgroup of G, and g is in G. We prove that these varieties are globally F-regular in positive characteristic, resp. of globally F-regular type in characteristic 0. As a consequence, the large Schubert varieties are normal and
Let $X\subseteq \mathbb{P}^N$ be a non-degenerate normal projective variety of codimension $e$ and degree $d$ with isolated $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein singularities. We prove that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity $\text{reg}(\mathcal{O}_{X})\le d-e$, as predicted by the Eisenbud-Goto regularity conjecture. Such a bound fails for general projective varieties. The main techniques are Noma's classification of non-degenerated projective varieties and Nadel vanishing for multiplier ideals. We also classify the extremal and the next to extremal cases.
The regularity of a Fano variety, denoted by ${\rm reg}(X)$, is the largest dimension of the dual complex of a log Calabi--Yau structure on $X$. The coregularity is defined to be \[ {\rm coreg}(X):= \dim X - {\rm reg}(X)-1. \] The coregularity is the complementary dimension of the regularity. We expect that the coregularity of a Fano variety governs, to a large extent, the geometry of $X$. In this note, we review the history of Fano varieties, give some examples, survey some important theorems, introduce the coregularity, and propose several problems regarding this invariant of Fano varieties.
We compute the Hilbert series of general weighted flag varieties and discuss a computer-aided method to determine their defining equations. We apply our results to weighted flag varieties coming from the Lie groups of type G_2 and GL(6), to construct some families of polarised projective varieties in codimensions 8 and 6, respectively.
We prove that Schubert varieties are globally F-regular in the sense of Karen Smith. We apply this result to the category of equivariant and holonomic D-modules on flag varieties in positive characteristic. Here recent results of Blickle are shown to imply that the simple D-modules coincide with local cohomology sheaves with support in Schubert varieties. Using a local Grothendieck-Cousin complex we prove that the decomposition of local cohomology sheaves with support in Schubert cells is multiplicity free.
Let A be an ample line bundle on a projective toric variety X of dimension n. We show that if l>=n-1+p, then A^l satisfies the property N_p. Applying similar methods, we obtain a combinatorial theorem: For a given lattice polytope P we give a criterion for an integer m to guarantee that mP is normal.
We show that irreducibility is not a first-order definable property of real algebraic varieties. The proof is based on the recent o-minimality result for the exponential function. We conjecture that irreducibility is not a definable property of complex algebraic varieties.
Let $σ$ be a simple involution of an algebraic semisimple group $G$ and let $H$ be the subgroup of $G$ of points fixed by $σ$. If the restricted root system is of type $A$, $C$ or $BC$ and $G$ is simply connected or if the restricted root system is of type $B$ and $G$ is adjoint, then we describe a standard monomial theory and the equations for the coordinate ring $k[G/H]$ using the standard monomial theory and the Plücker relations of an appropriate (maybe infinite dimensional) Grassmann variety.
In the 1980's, work of Green and Lazarsfeld helped to uncover the beautiful interplay between the geometry of the embedding of a curve and the syzygies of its defining equations. Similar results hold for the first secant variety of a curve, and there is a natural conjectural picture extending to higher secant varieties as well. We present an introduction to the algebra and geometry used in previous work of the authors to study syzygies of secant varieties of curves with an emphasis on examples of explicit computations and elementary cases that illustrate the geometric principles at work.
Using multigraded Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity, we study the equations defining a projective embedding of a variety X. Given globally generated line bundles B_1, ..., B_k on X and integers m_1, ..., m_k, consider the line bundle L := B_1^m_1 \otimes ... \otimes B_k^m_k. We give conditions on the m_i which guarantee that the ideal of X in P(H^0(X,L)) is generated by quadrics and the first p syzygies are linear. This yields new results on the syzygies of toric varieties and the normality of polytopes.
Matrix Schubert varieties are affine varieties arising in the Schubert calculus of the complete flag variety. We give a formula for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of matrix Schubert varieties, answering a question of Jenna Rajchgot. We follow her proposed strategy of studying the highest-degree homogeneous parts of Grothendieck polynomials, which we call Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials. In addition to the regularity formula, we obtain formulas for the degrees of all Castelnuovo-Mumford polynomials and for their leading terms, as well as a complete description of when two Castelnuovo-Mumfor…
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a regular projective arithmetic variety equipped with an ample hermitian line bundle $\overline{\mathcal{L}}$. We prove that the proportion of global sections $σ$ with $\left\lVert σ\right\rVert_{\infty}<1$ of $\overline{\mathcal{L}}^{\otimes d}$ whose divisor does not have a singular point on the fiber $\mathcal{X}_p$ over any prime $p<e^{\varepsilon d}$ tends to $ζ_{\mathcal{X}}(1+\dim \mathcal{X})^{-1}$ as $d\rightarrow \infty$.
Let M_d(k) denote the space of dxd-matrices with coefficients in an algebraically closed field k. Let X be an orbit closure in the product [M_d(k)]^t equipped with the action of the general linear group GL_d(k) by simultaneous conjugation. We show that X is regular at any its point y such that the orbit of y has codimension one in X. The proof uses mainly the representation theory of associative algebras.
We generalize Zak's theorems on tangencies and on linear normality as well as Zak's definition and classification of Severi varieties. In particular we find sharp lower bounds for the dimension of higher secant varieties of a given variety X under suitable regularity assumption on X, and we classify varieties for which the bound is attained.
The condition of nilpotency is studied in the general linear Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_{n}(\mathbb{K})$ and the symplectic Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sp}_{2m}(\mathbb{K})$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. In particular, the conjugacy class of nilpotent matrices is described through nilpotent orbit varieties $\mathcal{O}_λ$ and an algorithm is provided for computing the closure $\overline{\mathcal{O}_λ} \cong \text{Spec}\left(\mathbb{K}[X]\big/J_λ\right).$ We provide new generators for the ideal $J_λ$ defining the affine variety $\overline{\mathcal{O}_λ}$ which show that the…
In this paper we give for any integer l > 2 a numerical criterion ensuring the existence of a chain of length l of lines through two general points of an irreducible variety X in P^N, involving the degrees and the number of homogeneous polynomials defining X. We show that our criterion is sharp.
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is an important invariant of projective algebraic varieties. A well known conjecture due to Eisenbud and Goto gives a bound for regularity in terms of the codimension and degree,i.e., Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of a given variety $X$ is less than or equal to $deg(X)-codim(X)+1$. This regularity conjecture (including classification of examples on the boundary) was verified for integral curves (Castelnuovo, Gruson, Lazarsfeld and Peskine), and for smooth surfaces (Pinkham, Lazarsfeld). In this paper we prove that $reg(X) \le deg(X)-1$ for smooth threefolds $X$ …
We study exceptional minuscule Schubert varieties and provide the defining equations of the defining ideals of their intersection with the big open cell. We also provide the resolutions of these ideals and characterize some of them in terms of fundamental examples of ideals in the theory of Gorenstein ideals.
We define a set of PBW-semistandard tableaux that is in a weight preserving bijection with the set of monomials corresponding to integral points in the Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytope for highest weight modules of the symplectic Lie algebra. We then show that these tableaux parametrize bases of the homogeneous coordinate rings of the complete symplectic original and PBW degenerate flag varieties. From this construction, we provide explicit degenerate relations that generate the defining ideal of the PBW degenerate variety. These relations consist of type A degenerate Plücker relatio…
We give a definition of Newton non degeneracy independent of the system of generators defining the variety. This definition extends the notion of Newton non degeneracy to varieties that are not necessarily complete intersection. As in the previous definition of non-degeneracy for complete intersection varieties, it is shown that the varieties satisfying our definition can be resolved with a toric modification. Using tools of both toric and tropical geometry we describe the toric modification in terms of the Groebner fan of the ideal defining the variety. The first part of the paper is devoted …
Let $I_M$ and $I_N$ be defining ideals of toric varieties such that $I_M$ is a projection of $I_N$, i.e. $I_N \subseteq I_M$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equality $I_M=rad(I_N+(f_1,...,f_s))$, where $f_1,...,f_s$ belong to $I_M$. Also a method for finding toric varieties which are set-theoretic complete intersection is given. Finally we apply our method in the computation of the arithmetical rank of certain toric varieties and provide the defining equations of the above toric varieties.
We show that every affine or projective algebraic variety defined over the field of real or complex numbers is homeomorphic to a variety defined over the field of algebraic numbers. We construct such a homeomorphism by choosing a small deformation of the coefficients of the original equations. This method is based on the properties of Zariski equisingular families of varieties. Moreover we construct an algorithm, that, given a system of equations defining a variety $V$, produces a system of equations with algebraic coefficients of a variety homeomorphic to $V$
We describe a parallel polynomial time algorithm for computing the topological Betti numbers of a smooth complex projective variety $X$. It is the first single exponential time algorithm for computing the Betti numbers of a significant class of complex varieties of arbitrary dimension. Our main theoretical result is that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the sheaf of differential $p$-forms on $X$ is bounded by $p(em+1)D$, where $e$, $m$, and $D$ are the maximal codimension, dimension, and degree, respectively, of all irreducible components of $X$. It follows that, for a union $V$ of generi…
This is a survey of M-regularity for coherent sheaves on abelian varieties and its applications, based on lectures given by the second author at the Seattle conference, in August 2005, and at the Luminy GAC workshop in October 2005. Section 3 contains some brief indications of upcoming work.
For a semi-stable abelian variety A_K over a complete discrete valuation field K, we show that every finite subgroup scheme of A_K extends to a log finite flat group scheme over the valuation ring of K endowed with the canonical log structure. To achieve this, we first prove that every weak log abelian variety over an fs log scheme with its underlying scheme locally noetherian, is a sheaf for the Kummer flat topology, which answers a question of Chikara Nakayama. We also give several equivalent conditions defining isogenies of log abelian varieties.
New classes of modules of equations for secant varieties of Veronese varieties are defined using representation theory and geometry. Some old modules of equations (catalecticant minors) are revisited to determine when they are sufficient to give scheme-theoretic defining equations. An algorithm to decompose a general ternary quintic as the sum of seven fifth powers is given as an illustration of our methods. Our new equations and results about them are put into a larger context by introducing vector bundle techniques for finding equations of secant varieties in general. We include a few homoge…
A general framework for the reduction of the equations defining classes of spherical varieties to (maybe infinite dimensional) grassmannians is proposed. This is applied to model varieties of type A, B and C; in particular a standard monomial theory for these varieties is presented.
We study the relationship between the equations defining a projective variety and properties of its secant varieties. In particular, we use information about the syzygies among the defining equations to derive smoothness and normality statements about Sec(X) and also to obtain information about linear systems on the blow up of projective space along a variety X. We use these results to geometrically construct, for varieties of arbitrary dimension, a flip first described in the case of curves by M. Thaddeus via Geometric Invariant Theory, and to give some examples of vanishing theorems for the …
We relate the representations of the rational Cherednik algebras associated with the complex reflection group G(m,1,n) to sheaves on Nakajima quiver varieties associated with extended Dynkin gaphs via a Z-algebra construction. As the parameters defining the Cherednik algebra vary, the stability conditions defining the quiver variety change. We interpret the ordering on category O geometrically using this relationship; we also relate the geometry to the a-function for Hecke algebras with unequal parameters.
In this paper we study the cohomology of tensor products of symmetric powers of the cotangent bundle of complete intersection varieties in projective space. We provide an explicit description of some of those cohomology groups in terms of the equations defining the complete intersection. We give several applications. First we prove a non-vanishing result, then we give a new example illustrating the fact that the dimension of the space of holomorphic symmetric differential forms is not deformation invariant. Our main application is the construction of varieties with ample cotangent bundle, prov…
The central object of investigation of this paper is the Hirzebruch class, a deformation of the Todd class, given by Hirzebruch (for smooth varieties) in his celebrated book "Topological Methods in Algebraic Geometry". The generalization for singular varieties is due to Brasselet-Schürmann-Yokura. Following the work of Weber, we investigate its equivariant version for (possibly singular) toric varieties. The local decomposition of the Hirzebruch class to the fixed points of the torus action and a formula for the local class in terms of the defining fan are mentioned. After this review part, we…
