On defining irreducibility

Defining coarsenings of valuations

We study the question which henselian fields admit definable henselian valuations (with or without parameters). We show that every field which admits a henselian valuation with non-divisible value group admits a parameter-definable (non-trivial) henselian valuation. In equicharacteristic $0$, we give a complete characterization of henselian fields admitting a parameter-definable (non-trivial) henselian valuation. We also obtain partial characterization results of fields admitting 0-definable (non-trivial) henselian valuations. We then draw some Galois-theoretic conclusions from our results.

Defining integer valued functions in rings of continuous definable functions over a topological field

Let K be an expansion of either an ordered field or a valued field. Given a definable set X $\subseteq$ K<sup>m</sup> let C(X) be the ring of continuous definable functions from X to K. Uniformly defining $p$-henselian valuations

Admitting a non-trivial $p$-henselian valuation is a weaker assumption on a field than admitting a non-trivial henselian valuation. Unlike henselianity, $p$-henselianity is an elementary property in the language of rings. We are interested in the question when a field admits a non-trivial 0-definable $p$-henselian valuation (in the language of rings). Game representations of classes of piecewise definable functions

We present a general way of defining various reduction games on ω which "represent" corresponding topologically defined classes of functions. In particular, we will show how to construct games for piecewise defined functions, for functions which are pointwise limit of certain sequences of functions and for Γ-measurable functions. These games turn out to be useful as a combinatorial tool for the study of general reducibilities for subsets of the Baire space [10].

Defining Subrings in Finitely Generated Fields of All Characteristics

We give a construction of a large first-order definable family of subrings of finitely generated fields $K$ of any characteristic. We deduce that for any such $K$ there exists a first-order sentence $φ_K$ characterising $K$ in the class of finitely generated fields, i.e. such that for any finitely generated field $L$ we have $L \models φ_K$ if and only if $L \cong K$. This answers a question considered by Pop and others. In characteristic two, our results depend on resolution of singularities, whereas they are unconditional in all other characteristics.

Non-archimedean tame topology and stably dominated types

Let $V$ be a quasi-projective algebraic variety over a non-archimedean valued field. We introduce topological methods into the model theory of valued fields, define an analogue $\hat {V}$ of the Berkovich analytification $V^{an}$ of $V$, and deduce several new results on Berkovich spaces from it. In particular we show that $V^{an}$ retracts to a finite simplicial complex and is locally contractible, without any smoothness assumption on $V$.
