In this paper it is proved the existence of a sequence of radial solutions with negative energy of the linear Schrödinger-Maxwell equations under the action of a negative potential.
In this paper we provide a new technique to find solutions to the Klein-Gordon-Maxwell system. The method, based on an iterative argument, permits to improve previous results where the reduction method was used. We also show how this device permits to obtain a multiplicity result in the physically significant context known as "the positive potential case".
In this paper we look for solutions of a semilinear Maxwell type equation, in even dimension, greater than four. These solutions are critical points of a functional which is strongly degenerate because of the presence of the exterior derivative. We prove that, assuming a suitable convexity condition on the nonlinearity, the equation possesses infinitely many finite energy solutions.
We prove the existence of at least two solutions for a fourth order equation, which includes the vortex equations for the U(1) and CP(1) self-dual Maxwell-Chern-Simons models as special cases. Our method is variational, and it relies on an "asymptotic maximum principle" property for a special class of supersolutions to this fourth order equation.
We show that the number of low energy solutions of a double singularly perturbed Schroedinger Maxwell system type on a smooth 3 dimensional manifold (M,g) depends on the topological properties of the manifold. The result is obtained via Lusternik Schnirelmann category theory.
In this paper we study nonlinear Schrödinger-Maxwell systems on $n-$dimensional Hadamard manifolds, $3\leq n\leq 5.$ The main difficulty resides in the lack of compactness of such manifolds which is recovered by exploring suitable isometric actions. By combining variational arguments, some existence, uniqueness and multiplicity of isometry-invariant weak solutions are established for the Schrödinger-Maxwell system depending on the behavior of the nonlinear term.
In this paper we consider the nonlinear equation involving differential forms on a compact Riemannian manifold $δd ξ= f'(<ξ,ξ>)ξ$. This equation is a generalization of the semilinear Maxwell equations recently introduced in a paper by Benci and Fortunato. We obtain a multiplicity result both in the positive mass case (i.e. $f'(t)\geqε>0$ uniformly) and in the zero mass case ($f'(t)\geq 0$ and $f'(0)=0$) where a strong convexity hypothesis on the nonlinearity is assumed.
A global solvability result of the Cauchy problem of the two-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system near a given global Maxwellian is established by employing an approach different than that of [5]. Compared with that of [5], the minimal regularity index and the smallness assumptions we imposed on the initial data are weaker. Our analysis does not rely on the decay of the corresponding linearized system and the Duhamel principle and thus it can be used to treat the one-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Landau system for the case of $γ>-3$ and the one-species Vlasov-Maxwell-Boltzmann system for the case of …
We study the nonrelativistic limit of solitary waves from Nonlinear Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equations (NMKG) to Nonlinear Schrodinger-Poisson equations (NSP). It is known that the existence or multiplicity of positive solutions depends on the choices of parameters the equations contain. In this paper, we prove that for a given positive solitary wave of NSP, which is found in Ruiz's work \cite{R}, there corresponds a family of positive solitary waves of NMKG under the nonrelativistic limit. Notably, our results contain a new result of existence of positive solutions to (NMKG) with lower order nonl…
We derive the homogenization limit for time harmonic Maxwell's equations in a periodic geometry with periodicity length $η>0$. The considered meta-material has a singular sub-structure: the permittivity coefficient in the inclusions scales like $η^{-2}$ and a part of the substructure (corresponding to wires in the related experiments) occupies only a volume fraction of order $η^2$; the fact that the wires are connected across the periodicity cells leads to contributions in the effective system. In the limit $η\to 0$, we obtain a standard Maxwell system with a frequency dependent effective perm…
We consider the free boundary problem for the plasma-vacuum interface in ideal compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). In the plasma region, the flow is governed by the usual compressible MHD equations, while in the vacuum region we consider the Maxwell system for the electric and the magnetic fields, in order to investigate the well-posedness of the problem, in particular in relation with the electric field in vacuum. At the free interface, driven by the plasma velocity, the total pressure is continuous and the magnetic field on both sides is tangent to the boundary. Under suitable stability…
We are concerned with the multiplicity of positive solutions for the singular superlinear and subcritical Schrödinger equation $$ \begin{array}{c} -Δu +V(x)u=λa(x)u^{-γ}+b(x)u^{p}~\mbox{in}~ \mathbb{R}^{N}, \end{array} $$ beyond the Nehari extremal value, as defined in Il'yasov [Topol. Methods Nonlinear Anal., 2017], when the potential $b \in L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^{N})$ may change its sign, $0<a\in L^{\frac{2}{1+γ}}(\mathbb{R}^{N})$, $V$ is a positive continuous function, $N\geq 3$ and $λ>0$ is a real parameter. The main difficulties come from the non-differentiability of the energy functional…
In this paper we study the coupled Schrödinger-Maxwell system $$\left\{ \begin{array}{lll} -\triangle u+u +ϕu=λα(x) f(u)& {\rm in} & \mathbb R^3,\\ -\triangle ϕ=u^2 & {\rm in} & \mathbb R^3, \end{array}\right. $$ where $α\in L^\infty(\mathbb R^3)\cap L^{6/(5-q)}(\mathbb R^3)$ for some $q\in (0,1)$, and the continuous function $f:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ is superlinear at zero and sublinear at infinity, e.g., $f(s) = \min(|s|^r,|s|^p)$ with $0<r<1<p.$ Depending on the range of $λ>0$, non-existence and multiplicity results are obtained.
This paper is devoted to multiplicity results of solutions to nonlocal elliptic equations modeling gravitating systems. By considering the case of Fermi-Dirac statistics as a singular perturbation of Maxwell-Boltzmann one, we are able to produce multiplicity results. Our method is based on cumulated mass densities and a logarithmic change of coordinates that allows us to describe the set of all solutions by a non-autonomous perturbation of an autonomous dynamical system. This has interesting consequences in terms of bifurcation diagrams, which are illustrated by a some numerical computations. …
We consider the Toda system on a compact surface. We give existence and multiplicity results, using variational and Morse-theoretical methods. It is the first existence result when some of the coefficients of the singularities are allowed to be negative.
In this paper we study the multiplicity of positive solutions for nonlinear elliptic equations on $\R^N$. The number of solutions is greater or equal than the number of disjoint intervals on which the nonlinear term is negative. Applications are given to multiplicity of standing waves for the nonlinear Schrödinger and Klein-Gordon equations.
In this paper we consider an anisotropic Robin problem driven by the $p(x)$-Laplacian and a superlinear reaction. Applying variational tools along with truncation and comparison techniques as well as critical groups, we prove that the problem has at least five nontrivial smooth solutions to be ordered and with sign information: two positive, two negative and the fifth nodal.
We solve time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in anisotropic, spatially homogeneous media in intersections of $L^p$-spaces. The material laws are time-independent. The analysis requires Fourier restriction-extension estimates for perturbations of Fresnel's wave surface. This surface can be decomposed into finitely many components of the following three types: smooth surfaces with non-vanishing Gaussian curvature, smooth surfaces with Gaussian curvature vanishing along one-dimensional submanifolds, but without flat points, and surfaces with conical singularities. Our estimates are based on new Boc…
Let $V(t) = e^{tG_b},\: t \geq 0,$ be the semigroup generated by Maxwell's equations in an exterior domain $Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^3$ with dissipative boundary condition $E_{tan}- γ(x) (ν\wedge B_{tan}) = 0, γ(x) > 0, \forall x \in Γ= \partial Ω.$ We study the case when $Ω= \{x \in {\mathbb R^3}:\: |x| > 1\}$ and $γ\neq 1$ is a constant. We establish a Weyl formula for the counting function of the negative real eigenvalues of $G_b.$
We study a Dirichlet-type boundary value problem for a pseudo-differential equation driven by the fractional Laplacian, with a non-linear reaction term which is resonant at infinity between two non-principal eigenvalues: for such equation we prove existence of a non-trivial solution. Under further assumptions on the behavior of the reaction at zero, we detect at least three non-trivial solutions (one positive, one negative, and one of undetermined sign). All results are based on the properties of weighted fractional eigenvalues, and on Morse theory.
In this paper, we show the existence and multiplicity of nontrivial, non-negative solutions of the fractional $p$-Kirchhoff problem \begin{equation*} \begin{array}{rllll} M\left(\displaystyle\int_{\mathbb{R}^{2n}}\frac{|u(x)-u(y)|^p}{\left|x-y\right|^{n+ps}}dx\,dy\right)(-Δ)^{s}_p u &=λf(x)|u|^{q-2}u+ g(x)\left|u\right|^{r-2}u\, \text{in} Ω,\\ u&=0 \;\mbox{in} \mathbb{R}^{n}\setminus Ω, \end{array} \end{equation*} where $(-Δ)^{s}_p$ is the fractional $p$-Laplace operator, $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$ with smooth boundary, $f \in L^{\frac{r}{r-q}}(Ω)$ and $g\in L^\infty(Ω)$ are sig…
In this paper we study the solitary waves for the coupled Schrödinger - Maxwell equations in three-dimensional space. We prove the existence of a sequence of radial solitary waves for these equations with a fixed $L^2$ norm. We study the asymptotic behavior and the smoothness of these solutions. We show also the fact that the eigenvalues are negative and the first one is isolated.
Two recently derived integral equations for the Maxwell transmission problem are compared through numerical tests on simply connected axially symmetric domains for non-magnetic materials. The winning integral equation turns out to be entirely free from false eigenwavenumbers for any passive materials, also for purely negative permittivity ratios and in the static limit, as well as free from false essential spectrum on non-smooth surfaces. It also appears to be numerically competitive to all other available integral equation reformulations of the Maxwell transmission problem, despite using eigh…
Using the theory of fixed point index, we discuss the existence and multiplicity of non-negative solutions of a wide class of boundary value problems with coupled nonlinear boundary conditions. Our approach is fairly general and covers a variety of situations. We illustrate our theory in an example all the constants that occur in our theory.
Let $Ω= \mathbb R^3 \setminus \bar{K}$, where $K$ is an open bounded domain with smooth boundary $Γ$. Let $V(t) = e^{tG_b},\: t \geq 0,$ be the semigroup related to Maxwell's equations in $Ω$ with dissipative boundary condition $ν\wedge (ν\wedge E)+ γ(x) (ν\wedge H) = 0, γ(x) > 0, \forall x \in Γ.$ We study the case when $γ(x) \neq 1, \: \forall x \in Γ,$ and we establish a Weyl formula for the counting function of the eigenvalues of $G_b$ in a polynomial neighbourhood of the negative real axis.
This paper is concerned with the time-dependent Maxwell's equations for a plane interface between a negative material described by the Drude model and the vacuum, which fill, respectively, two complementary half-spaces. In a first paper, we have constructed a generalized Fourier transform which diagonalizes the Hamiltonian that represents the propagation of transverse electric waves. In this second paper, we use this transform to prove the limiting absorption and limiting amplitude principles, which concern, respectively, the behavior of the resolvent near the continuous spectrum and the long …
