We prove the existence of at least two solutions for a fourth order equation, which includes the vortex equations for the U(1) and CP(1) self-dual Maxwell-Chern-Simons models as special cases. Our method is variational, and it relies on an "asymptotic maximum principle" property for a special class of supersolutions to this fourth order equation.
In this paper we give a multiplicity result for the following Chern-Simons-Schrödinger equation \[ -Δu+2q u \int_{|x|}^{\infty}\frac{u^{2}(s)}{s}h_u(s)ds +q u\frac{h^{2}_u(|x|)}{|x|^{2}} = g(u), \quad\hbox{in }\mathbb{R}^2, \] where $\displaystyle h_u(s)=\int_0^s τu^2(τ) \ d τ$, under very general assumptions on the nonlinearity $g$. In particular, for every $n\in \mathbb N$, we prove the existence of (at least) $n$ distinct solutions, for every $q\in (0,q_{n})$, for a suitable $q_n$.
Blow-up in second and fourth order semi-linear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) is considered in bounded regions of one, two and three spatial dimensions with uniform initial data. A phenomenon whereby singularities form at multiple points simultaneously is exhibited and explained by means of a singular perturbation theory. In the second order case we pre- dict that points furthest from the boundary are selected by the dynamics of the PDE for singularity. In the fourth order case, singularities can form simultaneously at multiple locations, even in one spatial dimension. In two …
We investigate existence and multiplicity of weak solutions for fourth-order problems involving the Leray-Lions type operators in variable exponent spaces and improve a result of Bonanno and Chinnì (2011). We use variational methods and apply a multiplicity theorem of Bonanno and Marano (2010).
In this paper we establish a multiplicity result concerning the existence of doubly periodic solutions for a $2\times2$ nonlinear elliptic system arising in the study of self-dual non-Abelian Chern--Simons vortices. We show that the given system admits at least two solutions when the Chern--Simons coupling parameter $κ>0$ is sufficiently small; while no solutions exist for $κ>0$ sufficiently large. As in [36] we use a variational formulation of the problem. Thus, we obtain a first solution via a (local) minimization method and show that it is asymptotically gauge-equivalent to the (broken) pri…
We obtain existence and multiplicity results for quasilinear fourth order elliptic equations on $\mathbb{R}^{N}$ with sign-changing potential. Our results generalize some recent results on this problem.
This paper deals with a fourth order elliptic equation on compact Riemannian manifolds. We establish the existence of solutions to the equation with critical Sobolev growth which is the subject of the first theorem. In the second one, we prove the multiplicity of solutions in the subcritical case.
In this paper we study the existence of at least two positive weak solutions for an inhomogeneous fourth order equation with Navier boundary data involving nonlinearities of critical growth with a bifurcation parameter $λ$ in $\mathbb{R}^{2m}$. We establish here the lower and upper bound for $λ$ which determine multiplicity and non-existence respectively.
In this paper we consider a mean field problem on a compact surface with conical singularities. This problem appears in the Gaussian curvature prescription problem in Geometry, and also in the Electroweak Theory and in the abelian Chern-Simons-Higgs model in Physics. In this paper we focus on the case of sign-changing potentials, and we give results on compactness, existence and multiplicity of solutions.
In this paper, by combing the variational methods and Trudinger-Moser inequality, we study the existence and multiplicity of the positive standing wave for the following Chern-Simons-Schrödinger equation \begin{equation} -Δu+u +λ\left(\int_{0}^{\infty}\frac{h(s)}{s}u^{2}(s)ds+\frac{h^{2}(\vert x\vert)}{\vert x\vert^{2}}\right)u=f(x,u)+εk(x)\quad\quad \text{in}\,\,\mathbb{R}^2, \\ \end{equation} where $h(s)=\int_{0}^{s}\frac{l}{2}u^{2}(l)dl$, $λ>0$ and the nonlinearity $f:\mathbb{R}^2\times \mathbb{R}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ behaves like $\text{exp}(α\vert u\vert^{2})$ as $\vert u\vert\rightarro…
In order to study electrically and magnetically charged vortices in fractional quantum Hall effect and anyonic superconductivity, the Maxwell-Chern-Simons (MCS) model was introduced by [Lee, Lee, Min (1990)] as a unified system of the classical Abelian-Higgs model (AH) and the Chern-Simons (CS) model. In this article, the first goal is to obtain the uniform (CS) limit result of (MCS) model with respect to the Chern-Simons parameter without any restriction on either a particular class of solutions or the number of vortex points. The most important step for this purpose is to derive the relation…
We are concerned with sign-changing solutions of the following gauged nonlinear Schrödinger equation in dimension two including the so-called Chern-Simons term \begin{align*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} -\triangle {u}+ωu+\left(\frac{h^2(|x|)}{|x|^2}+\int_{|x|}^{+\infty}\frac{h(s)}{s}u^2(s){\rm ds}\right) u =λ|u|^{p-2}u& \mbox{in}\,\,\R^2, u(x)=u(|x|)\, \in\, H^1(\R^2), \end{array} \right. \end{align*} where $ω,λ>0$, $p\in(4,6)$ and $$ h(s)=\frac{1}{2}\int_0^sτu^2(τ)dτ. $$ Via a novel perturbation approach and the method of invariant sets of descending flow, we investigate the existence and multi…
Fourth-order semilinear parabolic equations of the Cahn--Hilliard-type (01) u_t + \D^2 u = \g u \pm \D (|u|^{p-1}u) in Ω\times \re_+, are considered in a smooth bounded domain $Ø\subset \ren$ with Navier-type boundary conditions on $\p Ø$, or $Ø= \ren$, where $p>1$ and $\g$ are given real parameters. The sign $``+"$ in the "diffusion term" on the right-hand side means the stable case, while $``-"$ reflects the unstable (blow-up) one, with the simplest, so called limit, canonical model for $\g=0$, (02) u_t + \D^2 u= \pm \D(|u|^{p-1}u) \inA. The following three main problems are studied: (i) for…
The study of fourth order partial differential equations has flourished in the last years, however, a $p(\cdot)$-biharmonic problem with no-flux boundary condition has never been considered before, not even for constant $p$. This is an important step further, since surfaces that are impermeable to some contaminants are appearing quite often in nature, hence the significance of such boundary condition. By relying on several variational arguments, we obtain the existence and the multiplicity of weak solutions to our problem. We point out that, although we use a mountain pass type theorem in orde…
We prove that any manifold diffeomorphic to $S^3$ and endowed with a generic metric contains at least two embedded minimal two-spheres. The existence of at least one minimal two-sphere was obtained by Simon-Smith in 1983. Our approach combines ideas from min-max theory and mean curvature flow. We also establish the existence of smooth mean convex foliations in three manifolds. We apply our methods to solve a problem posed by S.T. Yau in 1987 on whether the planar two-spheres are the only minimal spheres in ellipsoids centered about the origin in $\mathbb{R}^4$. Finally, considering the example…
