These are notes for lectures given at MIT in 1999 (Fall). They contain a discussion of affine Hecke algebras with possibly unequal parameters including a theory of cells and a partly conjectural theory of J-rings.
A conjecture of C. Bonnafé, M. Geck, L. Iancu, and T. Lam parameterizes Kazhdan-Lusztig left cells for unequal parameter Hecke algebras in type $B_n$ by families of standard domino tableaux of arbitrary rank. Relying on a family of properties outlined by G. Lusztig and the recent work of C. Bonnafé, we verify the conjecture and describe the structure of each cell as a module for the underlying Weyl group.
In 1979, Vogan introduced a generalised $\τ$ -invariant for characterising primitive ideals in enveloping algebras. Via a known dictionary this translates to an invariant of left cells in the sense of Kazhdan and Lusztig. Although it is not a complete invariant, it is extremely useful in describing left cells. Here, we propose a general framework for defining such invariants which also applies to Hecke algebras with unequal parameters.
These are notes for the Aisenstadt lectures given in may/june 2002 at CRM, Montreal, enlarged and updated in 2014 by taking into account the recent results of Elias and Williamson on Soergel bimodules. The main object is the study of Iwahori-Hecke algebras arising from reductive groups over finite or p-adic fields. We try to extend various results known in the equal parameter case to the case of not necessarily equal parameters.
We determine the unitary dual of the geometric graded Hecke algebras with {unequal} parameters which appear in Lusztig's classification of unipotent representations for {exceptional} $p$-adic groups. The largest such algebra is of type $F_4.$ Via the Barbasch-Moy correspondence of unitarity applied to this setting, this is equivalent to the identification of the corresponding unitary unipotent representations with real central character of the $p$-adic groups. In order for this correspondence to be applicable here, we show (following Lusztig's geometric classification, and Barbasch and Moy's o…
By Tits' deformation argument, a generic Iwahori--Hecke algebra $H$ associated to a finite Coxeter group $W$ is abstractly isomorphic to the group algebra of $W$. Lusztig has shown how one can construct an explicit isomorphism, provided that the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis of $H$ satisfies certain deep properties. If $W$ is crystallographic and $H$ is a one-parameter algebra, then these properties are known to hold thanks to a geometric interpretation. In this paper, we develop some new general methods for verifying these properties, and we do verify them for two-parameter algebras of type $I_2(m)$…
This paper is the continuation of the work in~\cite{Yin}. In that paper we generalized the definition of $W$-graph ideal in the weighted Coxeter groups, and showed how to construct a $W$-graph from a given $W$-graph ideal in the case of unequal parameters. In this paper we study the full $W$-graphs for a given $W$-graph ideal. We show that there exist a pair of dual modules associated with a given $W$-graph ideal, they are connected by a duality map. % and the dual $W$-graph bases can be established. For each of the dual modules, the associated full $W$-graphs can be constructed.% among them, …
Let $(W,S)$ be a Coxeter system, let $G$ be a finite solvable group of automorphisms of $(W,S)$ and let $φ$ be a weight function which is invariant under $G$. Let $φ_G$ denote the weight function on $W^G$ obtained by restriction from $φ$. The aim of this paper is to compare the ${\mathbf{a}}$-function, the set of Duflo involutions and the Kazhdan-Lusztig cells associated to $(W,φ)$ and to $(W^G,φ_G)$, provided that Lusztig's Conjectures hold.
Let $R$ be a root datum with affine Weyl group $W^e$, and let $H = H (R,q)$ be an affine Hecke algebra with positive, possibly unequal, parameters $q$. Then $H$ is a deformation of the group algebra $\mathbb C [W^e]$, so it is natural to compare the representation theory of $H$ and of $W^e$. We define a map from irreducible $H$-representations to $W^e$-representations and we show that, when extended to the Grothendieck groups of finite dimensional representations, this map becomes an isomorphism, modulo torsion. The map can be adjusted to a (nonnatural) continuous bijection from the dual space…
These are lecture notes prepared for London Mathematical Society Symposium "Quantum Groups" held in Durham 19-29 July 1999. We give a survey on cyclotomic Hecke algebras. These algebras have been studied by Dipper, James, Malle, Mathas and the author. In lecture one, we start with definitions. We then go on to Specht module theory of cyclotomic Hecke algebras constructed by Dipper, James and Mathas. In lecture two, we explain Ginzburg and Lusztig's theory on affine Hecke algebras and its application to cyclotomic Hecke algebras due to the author. As Kazhdan-Lusztig bases of Hecke algebras desc…
Ariki's and Grojnowski's approach to the representation theory of affine Hecke algebras of type $A$ is applied to type $B$ with unequal parameters to obtain -- under certain restrictions on the eigenvalues of the lattice operators -- analogous multiplicity-one results and a classification of irreducibles with partial branching rules as in type $A$.
In 1979, Vogan proposed a generalised $τ$-invariant for characterising primitive ideals in enveloping algebras. Via a known dictionary this translates to an invariant of left cells of finite Weyl groups. Although it is not a complete invariant, it is extremely useful in describing left cells. Here, we propose a general framework for defining such invariants which also applies to Hecke algebras with unequal parameters.
By a result of Mathas, the basis element T_{w_0} of the Hecke algebra of a finite Coxeter group acts in the canonical basis of a cell module as a permutation matrix times plus or minus a power of v. We generalize this result to the unequal parameter case,. We also show that the image of T_{w_0} in the corresponding asymptotic Hecke algebra is given by a simple formula.
These notes are based on a course given at the EPFL in May 2005. It is concerned with the representation theory of Hecke algebras in the non-semisimple case. We explain the role that these algebras play in the modular representation theory of finite groups of Lie type and survey the recent results which complete the classification of the simple modules. These results rely on the theory of Kazhdan--Lusztig cells in finite Weyl groups (with respect to possibly unequal parameters) and the theory of canonical bases for representations of quantum groups.
We study the (quantum) Schur algebras of type B/C corresponding to the Hecke algebras with unequal parameters. We prove that the Schur algebras afford a stabilization construction in the sense of Beilinson-Lusztig-MacPherson that constructs a multiparameter upgrade of the quantum symmetric pair coideal subalgebras of type A III/IV with no black nodes. We further obtain the canonical basis of the Schur/coideal subalgebras, at the specialization associated to any weight function. These bases are the counterparts of Lusztig's bar-invariant basis for Hecke algebras with unequal parameters. In the …
The aim of this paper is to gather and (try to) unify several approaches for the modular representation theory of Hecke algebras of type $B$. We attempt to explain the connections between Geck's cellular structures (coming from Kazhdan-Lusztig theory with unequal parameters) and Ariki's Theorem on the canonical basis of the Fock spaces.
In this paper we construct representations of certain graded double affine Hecke algebras (DAHA) with possibly unequal parameters from geometry. More precisely, starting with a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ together with a $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$-grading $\oplus_{i}\mathfrak{g}_{i}$ and a block of $G_{\underline{0}}$-equivariant complexes on the nilpotent cone of $\mathfrak{g}_{\underline{1}}$ as introduced in \cite{LY1}, we attach a graded DAHA and construct its action on the direct sum of spiral inductions in that block. This generalizes results of Vasserot \cite{V} and Oblomkov-Yun \ci…
We introduce the computer algebra package {\sf PyCox}, written entirely in the {\sf Python} language. It implements a set of algorithms - in a spirit similar to the older {\sf CHEVIE} system - for working with Coxeter groups and Hecke algebras. This includes a new variation of the traditional algorithm for computing Kazhdan--Lusztig cells and $W$-graphs, which works efficiently for all finite groups of rank $\leq 8$ (except $E_8$). We also discuss the computation of Lusztig's leading coefficients of character values and distinguished involutions (which works for $E_8$ as well). Our experiments…
Lusztig proved that the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of a spherical Hecke algebra can be essentially identified with the Weyl characters of the Langlands dual group. We generalize this result to the unequal parameter case. The new proof is pretty simple and quite different from Lusztig's.
Recently Delorme and Opdam have generalized the theory of R-groups towards affine Hecke algebras with unequal labels. We apply their results in the case where the affine Hecke algebra is of type B, for an induced discrete series representation with real central character. We calculate the R-group of such an induced representation, and show that it decomposes multiplicity free into 2^d irreducible summands. The power d can be calculated combinatorially.
We consider two families of equivalence classes in the Weyl groups of type $B_n$ which are suggested by the study of left cells in unequal parameter Iwahori-Hecke algebras. Both families are indexed by a non-negative integer $r$. For $r=0$, the classes in the first family coincide with left cells corresponding to the equal parameter Iwahori-Hecke algebra. When $r$ is sufficiently large, the equivalence classes in the second family agree with left cells corresponding to a special class of choices of unequal parameters. Our main result shows that the two families of equivalence classes coincide,…
This is a brief introduction to the quiver Hecke algebras of Khovanov, Lauda and Rouquier, emphasizing their application to the categorification of quantum groups. The text is based on lectures given by the author at the ICRA workshop in Bielefeld in August, 2012.
This survey article, is written as an extended note and supplement of my lectures in the current developments in mathematics conference in 2015. We discuss some recent developments on the conjugacy classes of affine Weyl groups and $p$-adic groups, and some applications to Shimura varieties and to representations of affine Hecke algebras.
We relate the representations of the rational Cherednik algebras associated with the complex reflection group G(m,1,n) to sheaves on Nakajima quiver varieties associated with extended Dynkin gaphs via a Z-algebra construction. As the parameters defining the Cherednik algebra vary, the stability conditions defining the quiver variety change. We interpret the ordering on category O geometrically using this relationship; we also relate the geometry to the a-function for Hecke algebras with unequal parameters.
These are the lecture notes of a series of lectures on Dunkl operators. We discuss the underlying algebraic structure of the degenerate double affine Hecke algebra, intertwiners and shift operators. We apply this to Macdonald theory. We also discuss the ``compact'' and ``noncompact'' spectral decomposition of these operators. In the attractive noncompact situation we classify the discrete eigenfunctions and compute their square norms.
The main purpose of this paper is to identify the tempered modules for the affine Hecke algebra of type $C_n^{(1)}$ with arbitrary, non-root of unity, unequal parameters, in the exotic Deligne-Langlands correspondence in the sense of Kato. Our classification has several applications to the Weyl group module structure of the tempered Hecke algebra modules. In particular, we provide a geometric and a combinatorial classification of discrete series which contain the sign representation of the Weyl group. This last combinatorial classification was expected from the work of Heckman-Opdam and Sloote…
We state a conjecture which gives a combinatorial parametrization of the irreducible tempered representations with real central character of a graded Hecke algebra with unequal labels, associated to a root sytem of type B or C. This conjecture is based on a combinatorial generalization of the Springer correspondence in the classical (equal label) case. In particular, the described modules turn out to have a natural grading for the action of W_0, and are completely determined by their central character together with the W_0-representation in the top degree. This latter is an irreducible W_0-cha…
Hiraga, Ichino and Ikeda have conjectured an explicit expression for the Plancherel density of the group of points of a reductive group defined over a local field $F$, in terms of local Langlands parameters. In these lectures we shall present a proof of these conjectures for Lusztig's class of representations of unipotent reduction if $F$ is $p$-adic and $G$ is of adjoint type and splits over an unramified extension of $F$. This is based on the author's paper [Spectral transfer morphisms for unipotent affine Hecke algebras, Selecta Math. (N.S.) 22 (2016), no. 4, 2143--2207]. More generally for…
We define the Iwahori-Hecke algebra for an almost split Kac-Moody group over a local non-archimedean field. We use the hovel associated to this situation, which is the analogue of the Bruhat-Tits building for a reductive group. The fixer K of some chamber in the standard apartment plays the role of the Iwahori subgroup. We can define the Iwahori-Hecke algebra as the algebra of some K-bi-invariant functions on the group with support consisting of a finite union of double classes. As two chambers in the hovel are not always in a same apartment, this support has to be in some large subsemigroup o…
Let H = H (R,q) be an affine Hecke algebra with complex, possibly unequal parameters q, which are not roots of unity. We compute the Hochschild and the cyclic homology of H. It turns out that these are independent of q and that they admit an easy description in terms of the extended quotient of a torus by a Weyl group, both of which are canonically associated to the root datum R. For q positive we also prove that the representations of the family of algebras H (R,q^ε) come in families which depend analytically on the complex number ε. Analogous results are obtained for graded Hecke algebras an…
In these lecture notes for a summer mini-course, we provide an exposition on quantum groups and Hecke algebras, including (quasi) R-matrix, canonical basis, and $q$-Schur duality. Then we formulate their counterparts in the setting of $\imath$quantum groups arising from quantum symmetric pairs, including (quasi) K-matrix, $\imath$-canonical basis, and $\imath$Schur duality. As an application, the ($\imath$-)canonical bases are used to formulate Kazhdan-Lusztig theories and character formulas in the BGG categories for Lie (super)algebras of type A-D. Finally, geometric constructions for $q$-Sch…
This paper gives a Schur-Weyl duality approach to the representation theory of the affine Hecke algebras of type C with unequal parameters. The first step is to realize the affine braid group of type $C_k$ as the group of braids on $k$ strands with two poles. Generalizing familiar methods from the one pole (type A) case, this provides commuting actions of the quantum group $U_q\mathfrak{g}$ and the affine braid group of type $C_k$ on a tensor space $M\otimes N \otimes V^{\otimes k}$. Special cases provide Schur-Weyl pairings between the affine Hecke algebra of type $C_k$ and the quantum group …
We establish a Schur type duality between a coideal subalgebra of the quantum group of type A and the Hecke algebra of type B with 2 parameters. We identify the $\imath$-canonical basis on the tensor product of the natural representation with Lusztig's canonical basis of the type B Hecke algebra with unequal parameters associated to a weight function.
We give a new and independent parameterization of the set of discrete series characters of an affine Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}_{\mathbf{v}}$, in terms of a canonically defined basis $\mathcal{B}_{gm}$ of a certain lattice of virtual elliptic characters of the underlying (extended) affine Weyl group. This classification applies to all semisimple affine Hecke algebras $\mathcal{H}$, and to all $\mathbf{v}\in\mathcal{Q}$, where $\mathcal{Q}$ denotes the vector group of positive real (possibly unequal) Hecke parameters for $\mathcal{H}$. By analytic Dirac induction we define for each $b\in \mathc…
Let $\mathbf{c}_0$ be the lowest generalized two-sided cell of an extended affine Weyl group W. We determine the structure of the based ring of $\mathbf{c}_0$. For this we show that certain conjectures of Lusztig on generalized cells (called P1-P15) hold for $\mathbf{c}_0$. As an application, we use the structure of the based ring to study certain simple modules of Hecke algebras of $ W $ with unequal parameters, namely those attached to $\mathbf{c}_0$. Also we give a set of prime ideals $\mathfrak{p}$ of the center $\mathcal{Z}$ of the generic affine Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}$ such that the …
We define the spherical Hecke algebra H for an almost split Kac-Moody group G over a local non-archimedean field. We use the hovel I associated to this situation, which is the analogue of the Bruhat-Tits building for a reductive group. The stabilizer K of a special point on the standard apartment plays the role of a maximal open compact subgroup. We can define H as the algebra of K-bi-invariant functions on G with almost finite support. As two points in the hovel are not always in a same apartment, this support has to be in some large subsemigroup G+ of G. We prove that the structure constants…
We define Kazhdan-Lusztig bases and study asymptotic forms for affine $q$-Schur algebras following Du and McGerty. We will show that the analogues of Lusztig's conjectures for Hecke algebras with unequal parameters hold for affine $q$-Schur algebras. We will also show that the affine $q$-Schur algebra $\mathcal{S}_{q,k}^{\vartriangle}(2,2)$ over a field $k$ has finite global dimension when char $k=0$ and $1+q\neq 0.$
These lectures given in Montreal in Summer 1997 are mainly based on, and form a condensed survey of, the book by N. Chriss and V. Ginzburg: `Representation Theory and Complex Geometry', Birkhauser 1997. Various algebras arising naturally in Representation Theory such as the group algebra of a Weyl group, the universal enveloping algebra of a complex semisimple Lie algebra, a Quantum group or the Iwahori-Hecke algebra of bi-invariant functions (under convolution) on a p-adic group, are considered. We give a uniform geometric construction of these algebras in terms of homology of an appropriate …
These are lecture notes (by the first author) from a course (by the second author) given over two extended semesters at the University of Sydney. The first part provides an introduction to the Langlands correspondence from an arithmetical point of view. The second part gives enough background in geometric representation theory to understand Bezrukavnikov's equivalence, which is a categorification of Kazhdan and Lusztig's two realizations of the affine Hecke algebra.
This chapter is based on a series of lectures that I gave at the National University of Singapore in April 2013. The notes survey the representation theory of the cyclotomic Hecke algebras of type A with an emphasis on understanding the KLR grading and the connections between the "classical" ungraded representation theory and the rapidly emerging graded theory. They are fairly self-contained and they try to give a leisurely introduction to these algebras, with many examples and calculations that don't appear elsewhere. We make extensive use of the interactions between the ungraded and graded r…
