We consider two families of equivalence classes in the Weyl groups of type $B_n$ which are suggested by the study of left cells in unequal parameter Iwahori-Hecke algebras. Both families are indexed by a non-negative integer $r$. For $r=0$, the classes in the first family coincide with left cells corresponding to the equal parameter Iwahori-Hecke algebra. When $r$ is sufficiently large, the equivalence classes in the second family agree with left cells corresponding to a special class of choices of unequal parameters. Our main result shows that the two families of equivalence classes coincide, suggesting the structure of left cells for remaining choices of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra parameters.
For any polynomial representation of the special linear group, the nodes of the corresponding crystal may be indexed by semi-standard Young tableaux. Under certain conditions, the standard Young tableaux occur, and do so with weight 0. Standard Young tableaux also parametrize the vertices of dual equivalence graphs. Motivated by the underlying representation theory, in this paper, we explainthis connection by giving a combinatorial manifestation of Schur-Weyl duality. In particular, we put a dual equivalence graph structure on the 0-weight space of certain crystal graphs, producing edges combi…
In this paper we study ad-nilpotent ideals of a complex simple Lie algebra $\ccg$ and their connections with affine Weyl groups and nilpotent orbits. We define a left equivalence relation for ad-nilpotent ideals based on their normalizer and generators, and prove that the equivalence relation is compatible with the left cell structure of affine Weyl group of $\ccg$ and Lusztig's star operator for type $\tilde A_{n-1}$.

We study equivalence classes relating to the Kazhdan-Lusztig mu(x,w) coefficients in order to help explain the scarcity of distinct values. Each class is conjectured to contain a "crosshatch" pair. We also compute the values attained by mu(x,w) for the permutation groups S_10 and S_11.
We study the $\{1234, 3412\}$ pattern-replacement equivalence relation on the set $S_n$ of permutations of length $n$, which is conceptually similar to the Knuth relation. In particular, we enumerate and characterize the nontrivial equivalence classes, or equivalence classes with size greater than 1, in $S_n$ for $n \geq 7$ under the $\{1234, 3412\}$-equivalence. This proves a conjecture by Ma, who found three equivalence relations of interest in studying the number of nontrivial equivalence classes of $S_n$ under pattern-replacement equivalence relations with patterns of length $4$, enumerate…
The independence equivalence class of a graph $G$ is the set of graphs that have the same independence polynomial as $G$. Beaton, Brown and Cameron (arXiv:1810.05317) found the independence equivalence classes of even cycles, and raised the problem of finding the independence equivalence class of odd cycles. The problem is completely solved in this paper.
Let $\mathcal{F}(n)$ be the set of smooth Fano $n$-polytopes up to unimocular equivalence. In this paper, we consider the F-equivalence or I-equivalence classes for $\mathcal{F}(n)$ and introduce F-isolated or I-isolated smooth Fano $n$-polytopes. First, we describe all of F-equivalence classes and I-equivalence classes for $\mathcal{F}(5)$. We also give a complete characterization of F-equivalence classes (I-equivalence classes) for smooth Fano $n$-polytopes with $n+3$ vertices and construct a family of I-isolated smooth Fano polytopes.
Following the treatment of Blass and Sagan, we present an algorithmic bijection between the Eulerian equivalence classes of totally cyclic orientations and the spanning trees without internal activity edges for a given graph.
Two edge colorings of a graph are {\em edge-Kempe equivalent} if one can be obtained from the other by a series of edge-Kempe switches. This work gives some results for the number of edge-Kempe equivalence classes for cubic graphs. In particular we show every 2-connected planar bipartite cubic graph has exactly one edge-Kempe equivalence class. Additionally, we exhibit infinite families of nonplanar bipartite cubic graphs with a range of numbers of edge-Kempe equivalence classes. Techniques are developed that will be useful for analyzing other classes of graphs as well.
Given a permutation pattern p and an equivalence relation on permutations, we study the corresponding equivalence classes all of whose members avoid p. Four relations are studied: Conjugacy, order isomorphism, Knuth-equivalence and toric equivalence. Each of these produces a known class of permutations or a known counting sequence. For example, involutions correspond to conjugacy, and permutations whose insertion tableau is hook-shaped with 2 in the first row correspond to Knuth-equivalence. These permutations are equinumerous with certain congruence classes of graph endomorphisms. In the case…
For an element $w$ of the simply-laced Weyl group, Buan-Iyama-Reiten-Scott defined a subcategory $\mathcal{F}(w)$ of a module category over a preprojective algebra of Dynkin type. This paper aims at studying categorical properties of $\mathcal{F}(w)$ via its connection with the root system. We show that by taking dimension vectors, simple objects in $\mathcal{F}(w)$ bijectively correspond to Bruhat inversion roots of $w$. As an application, we obtain a combinatorial criterion for $\mathcal{F}(w)$ to satisfy the Jordan-Hölder property (JHP). To achieve this, we develop a method to find simple o…
Two paths are equivalent modulo a given string $τ$, whenever they have the same length and the positions of the occurrences of $τ$ are the same in both paths. This equivalence relation was introduced for Dyck paths in \cite{BP}, where the number of equivalence classes was evaluated for any string of length 2. In this paper, we evaluate the number of equivalence classes in the set of ballot paths for any string of length 2 and 3, as well as in the set of Dyck paths for any string of length 3.
Super-strong (elsewhere referred to as strong) Wilf equivalence is a type of Wilf equivalence on words that was introduced by Kitaev et al. in 2009. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for two permutations in $n$ letters to be super-strongly Wilf equivalent, using distances between letters within a permutation. Furthermore, we give a characterization of such equivalence classes via two-colored binary trees. This allows us to prove, in the case of super-strong Wilf equivalence, the conjecture stated in (Kitaev et al., 2009) that the cardinality of each Wilf equivalence class is a po…
An enumeration is given of certain equivalence classes of directed multigraphs having 0 to 5 nodes with each node having 2 incoming and 2 outgoing arcs.
The equivalence problem of $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear sets of rank n of $PG(1,q^n)$ is investigated, also in terms of the associated variety, projecting configurations, $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear blocking sets of Rédei type and MRD-codes.
Motivated by Lusztig's $G$-stable pieces, we consider the combinatorial pieces: the pairs $(w, K)$ for elements $w$ in the Weyl group and subsets $K$ of simple reflections that are normalized by $w$. We generalize the notion of cyclic shift classes on the Weyl groups to the set of combinatorial pieces. We show that the partial cyclic shift classes of combinatorial pieces associated with minimal-length elements have nice representatives. As applications, we prove the left-right symmetry and the compatibility of the induction functors of the parabolic character sheaves.
The independence equivalence class of a graph $G$ is the set of graphs that have the same independence polynomial as $G$. A graph whose independence equivalence class contains only itself, up to isomorphism, is independence unique. Beaton, Brown and Cameron (2019) showed that paths with an odd number of vertices are independence unique and raised the problem of finding the independence equivalence class of paths with an even number of vertices. The problem is completely solved in this paper.
The fundamental combinatorial structure of a net in CP^2 is its associated set of mutually orthogonal latin squares. We define equivalence classes of sets of orthogonal Latin squares by label equivalences of the lines of the corresponding net in CP^2. Then we count these equivalence classes for small cases. Finally, we prove that the realization spaces of these classes in CP^2 are empty to show some non-existence results for 4-nets in CP^2.
This supplementary material includes three parts: some preliminary results, four examples, an experiment, three new algorithms, and all proofs of the results in the paper "Reversible MCMC on Markov equivalence classes of sparse directed acyclic graphs".
We explore a new type of replacement of patterns in permutations, suggested by James Propp, that does not preserve the length of permutations. In particular, we focus on replacements between 123 and a pattern of two integer elements. We apply these replacements in the classical sense; that is, the elements being replaced need not be adjacent in position or value. Given each replacement, the set of all permutations is partitioned into equivalence classes consisting of permutations reachable from one another through a series of bi-directional replacements. We break the eighteen replacements of i…
We characterize the equivalence and the weak equivalence of Cayley graphs for a finite group $\C{A}$. Using these characterizations, we find enumeration formulae of the equivalence classes and weak equivalence classes of Cayley graphs. As an application, we find the number of weak equivalence classes of circulant graphs.
We consider a large family of equivalence relations on permutations in Sn that generalise those discovered by Knuth in his study of the Robinson-Schensted correspondence. In our most general setting, two permutations are equivalent if one can be obtained from the other by a sequence of pattern-replacing moves of prescribed form; however, we limit our focus to patterns where two elements are transposed, subject to the constraint that a third element of a suitable type be in a suitable position. For various instances of the problem, we compute the number of equivalence classes, determine how man…
Let $Q_n$ denote the $n$-dimensional hypercube with the vertex set $V_n=\{0,1}^n$. A 0/1-polytope of $Q_n$ is a convex hull of a subset of $V_n$. This paper is concerned with the enumeration of equivalence classes of full-dimensional 0/1-polytopes under the symmetries of the hypercube. With the aid of a computer program, Aichholzer completed the enumeration of equivalence classes of full-dimensional 0/1-polytopes for $Q_4$, $Q_5$, and those of $Q_6$ up to 12 vertices. In this paper, we present a method to compute the number of equivalence classes of full-dimensional 0/1-polytopes of $Q_n$ with…
Let $N$ be a positive integer. For any positive integer $L\leq N$ and any positive divisor $r$ of $N$, we enumerate the equivalence classes of dessins d'enfants with $N$ edges, $L$ faces and two vertices whose automorphism groups are cyclic of order $r$. Further, for any non-negative integer $h$, we enumerate the equivalence classes of dessins with $N$ edges, $h$ faces of degree $2$ with $h\leq N$, and two vertices, whose automorphism groups are cyclic of order $r$. Our arguments are essentially based upon a natural one-to-one correspondence of the equivalence classes of all dessins with $N$ e…
In the present paper we construct a one-to-one correspondence between the set of graph-knots and the set of homotopy classes of looped graphs. Moreover, the graph-knot and the homotopy class constructed from a given knot are related with this correspondence. This correspondence is given by a simple formula.
Two Delone sets are bounded distance equivalent to each other if there is a bijection between them such that the distance of corresponding points is uniformly bounded. Bounded distance equivalence is an equivalence relation. We show that the hull of a repetitive Delone set with finite local complexity has either one equivalence class or uncountably many. A very similar result is proven in arXiv:2011.00106 [math.MG].
Many real-world voting systems consist of voters that occur in just two different types. Indeed, each voting system with a {\lq\lq}House{\rq\rq} and a {\lq\lq}Senat{\rq\rq} is of that type. Here we present structural characterizations and explicit enumeration formulas for these so-called bipartite simple games.
Let $V_n$ be the number of equivalence classes of invertible maps from $\{0,1\}^n$ to $\{0,1\}^n$, under action of permutation of variables on domain and range. So far, the values $V_n$ have been known for $n\le 6$. This paper describes the procedure by which the values of $V_n$ are calculated for $n\le 30$.
Two words $u$ and $v$ are $k$-abelian equivalent if, for each word $x$ of length at most $k$, $x$ occurs equally many times as a factor in both $u$ and $v$. The notion of $k$-abelian equivalence is an intermediate notion between the abelian equivalence and the equality of words. In this paper, we study the equivalence classes induced by the $k$-abelian equivalence, mainly focusing on the cardinalities of the classes. In particular, we are interested in the number of singleton $k$-abelian classes, i.e., classes containing only one element. We find a connection between the singleton classes and …
Two finite words $u$ and $v$ are $k$-binomially equivalent if, for each word $x$ of length at most $k$, $x$ appears the same number of times as a subsequence (i.e., as a scattered subword) of both $u$ and $v$. This notion generalizes abelian equivalence. In this paper, we study the equivalence classes induced by the $k$-binomial equivalence with a special focus on the cardinalities of the classes. We provide an algorithm generating the $2$-binomial equivalence class of a word. For $k \geq 2$ and alphabet of $3$ or more symbols, the language made of lexicographically least elements of every $k$…
