In this note we study the geometry of torsors under flat and finite commutative group schemes of rank p above curves in characteristic p and above relative curves over a complete discrete valuation ring of inequal characteristics. In bothe cases we study the Galois action of the Galois group of the base field on these torsors. We also study degeneration of $μ_p$-torsors from characteristic 0 to characteristic p and show that this degeneration is compatible with the Galois action. We then discuss the lifting of torsors under flat and commutative group schemes of rank p from positive to 0 characteristics. finally, for a proper and smooth curve X over a complete discrete valuation field of inequal characteristics we show the existence of a canonical Galois equivariant filtration on the first etale cohomology group of the geometric fibre of X with values in $μ_p$. This apaper is the first of a series of papers [Sa] and [Sa-1] where we compute the vanishing cycles arising from degeneration of $μ_p$-torsors above curves as well as the semi-stable reduction of these torsors and the Galois action on them.
Let $R$ be a complete discrete valuation ring with residue characteristic $p>0$. In this note we give an example of a Galois cover $f:Y\to X$ between flat and normal formal $R$-schemes of finite type which is étale above the generic fibre of $X$ such that the special fibre of $Y$ is reduced and such that $f$ doesn't have the structure of a torsor under a finite and flat $R$ group scheme. In the example $R$ has equal characteristic $p$ and the Galois group of the cover is cyclic of order $p^2$. In the example the formal scheme $X$ is affine and can be choosen to be even smooth.
In this note we investigate the problem of existence of a torsor structure for Galois covers of (formal) schemes over a complete discrete valuation ring of residue characteristic $p>0$ in the case of abelian Galois groups of type (p,p,...,p).
In this article we prove a local Riemman-Hurwitz formula which compares the dimensions of the spaces of vanishing cycles in a finite Galois cover of type (p,p,...,p) between formal germs of p-adic curves and which generalises the formula proven by the first author in the case of Galois covers of degree p. We also investigate the problem of the existence of a torsor structure for a finite Galois cover of type (p,p,...,p) between p-adic schemes.
We prove the existence of a Galois closure for towers of torsors under finite group schemes over a proper, geometrically connected and geometrically reduced algebraic stack $X$ over a field $k$. This is done by describing the Nori fundamental gerbe of an essentially finite cover of $X$. A similar result is also obtained for the $S$-fundamental gerbe.
The cuspidalization conjecture, which is a consequence of Grothendieck's section conjecture, asserts that for any smooth hyperbolic curve $X$ over a finitely generated field $k$ of characteristic $0$ and any non empty Zariski open $U \subset X$, every section of $π_1 (X, \bar x) \to \mathrm{Gal}_k$ lifts to a section of $π_1 (U,\bar x) \to \mathrm{Gal}_k$. We consider in this article the problem of lifting Galois sections to the intermediate quotient $ π_1^{cc}(U)$ introduced by Mochizuki. We show that when $k = \mathbb Q$ and $D=X\setminus U$ is an union of torsion sub-packets every Galois se…
Let $X$ be a fine and saturated log scheme, and let $G$ be a commutative finite flat group scheme over the underlying scheme of $X$. If $G$-torsors for the fppf topology can be thought of as being unramified objects by nature, then $G$-torsors for the log flat topology allow us to consider tame ramification. Using the results of Kato, we define a concept of Galois structure for these torsors, then we generalize the author's previous constructions (class-invariant homomorphism for semi-stable abelian varieties) in this new setting, thus dropping some restrictions.
Twisting by a G-torsor an object endowed with an action of a group G is a classical tool. For instance one finds in the paragraph 5.3 of the book "cohomologie galoisienne" by Serre, the description of the "opération de torsion" in a particular context. The aim of this note is to give a formalization of this twisting operation as general as possible in the algebraic geometric framework and to present a few applications. We will focus in particular to the application to the problem of specialization of covers addressed by P. Dèbes and al. in a series of papers.
Under suitable hypotheses, we prove that a form of a projective homogeneous variety $G/P$ defined over the function field of a surface over an algebraically closed field has a rational point. The method uses an algebro-geometric analogue of simple connectedness replacing the unit interval by the projective line. As a consequence, we complete the proof of Serre's Conjecture II in Galois cohomology for function fields over an algebraically closed field.
Let $X$ be a reduced connected $k$-scheme pointed at a rational point $x \in X(k)$. By using tannakian techniques we construct the Galois closure of an essentially finite $k$-morphism $f:Y\to X$ satisfying the condition $H^0(Y,\mathcal{O}_Y)=k$; this Galois closure is a torsor $p:\hat{X}_Y\to X$ dominating $f$ by an $X$-morphism $λ:\hat{X}_Y\to Y$ and universal for this property. Moreover we show that $λ:\hat{X}_Y\to Y$ is a torsor under some finite group scheme we describe. Furthermore we prove that the direct image of an essentially finite vector bundle over $Y$ is still an essentially finit…
We define a proper moduli stack for degree $p$ covers $f:Y \to \cX$ where $\cX$ is a twisted stable curve in the sense of [5] and [4], and $Y$ is a stable curve which via $f$ is a torsor over $\cX$ under a finite flat group scheme $\cG \to \cX$.
We interpret Galois covers in terms of particular monoidal functors, extending the correspondence between torsors and fiber functors. As applications we characterize tame $G$-covers between normal varieties for finite and étale group schemes and we prove that, if $G$ is a finite, flat and finitely presented nonabelian and linearly reductive group scheme over a ring, then the moduli stack of $G$-covers is reducible.
We introduce a cohomology set for groups defined by algebraic difference equations and show that it classifies torsors under the group action. This allows us to compute all torsors for large classes of groups. We also develop some tools for difference algebraic geometry and present an application to the Galois theory of differential equations depending on a discrete parameter.
In this paper we develop a theory of class invariants associated to $p$-adic representations of absolute Galois groups of number fields. Our main tool for doing this involves a new way of describing certain Selmer groups attached to $p$-adic representations in terms of resolvends associated to torsors of finite group schemes.
We introduce the notion of differential torsors, which allows the adaptation of constructions from algebraic geometry to differential Galois theory. Using these differential torsors, we set up a general framework for applying patching techniques in differential Galois theory over fields of characteristic zero. We show that patching holds over function fields over the complex numbers. As the main application, we prove the solvability of all differential embedding problems over complex function fields, thereby providing new insight on the structure of the absolute differential Galois group, i.e.…
In this paper we answer two long-standing questions in the classification of $G$-torsors on curves for an almost simple, simply connected algebraic group $G$ over the field of complex numbers. The first question is to give an intrinsic definition of (semi)stability for a $G$-torsor on an {\em irreducible nodal curve} and the second one is the construction of a flat degeneration of the moduli space of semistable $G$-torsors when the smooth curve degenerates to an irreducible nodal curve. A generalization of the classical Bruhat-Tits group schemes to two-dimensional regular local rings and an ap…
Using Galois descent tools, we extend the Altmann-Hausen presentation of normal affine algebraic varieties endowed with an effective torus action over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero to the case where the ground field is an arbitrary field of characteristic zero. In this context, the acting torus may have non-trivial torsors and we need additional data to encode such varieties. Finally, we focus on affine varieties endowed with a two-dimensional torus action and we provide a method for determining when a torsor is trivial, in which case the Altmann-Hausen presentation simp…
We consider local-global principles for torsors under linear algebraic groups, over function fields of curves over complete discretely valued fields. The obstruction to such a principle is a version of the Tate-Shafarevich group; and for groups with rational components, we compute it explicitly and show that it is finite. This yields necessary and sufficient conditions for local-global principles to hold. Our results rely on first obtaining a Mayer-Vietoris sequence for Galois cohomology and then showing that torsors can be patched. We also give new applications to quadratic forms and central …
Let $R$ be a complete discrete valuation ring with fraction field $K$ and with algebraically closed residue field. Let $X$ be a faithfully flat $R$-scheme of finite type of relative dimension 1 and $G$ be any affine $K$-group scheme of finite type. We prove that every $G$-torsor $Y$ over the generic fibre $X_η$ of $X$ can be extended to a torsor over ${X'}$ under the action of an affine and flat $K$-group scheme of finite type $G'$ where $X'$ is obtained by $X$ after a finite number of Néron blowing ups. Moreover if $G$ is finite and étale (resp. admits a finite and flat model) we find $X'$ su…
The torsor P_s=Hom(H_{\DR},H_s) under the motivic Galois group G_s=Aut H_s of the Tannakian category M_k generated by one-motives related by absolute Hodge cycles over a field k with an embedding s into the complex numbers is shown to be determined by its global projection [P_s\to (P_s)/(G_s)^0] to a Gal(\ov k/k)-torsor, and by its localizations (P_s) x_k (k_ξ) at a dense subset of orderings ξof the field k, provided k has virtual cohomological dimension (vcd) one. This result is an application of a recent local-global principle for connected linear algebraic groups over a field k of vcd=1.
A semicommutative finite group scheme is a finite group scheme which can be obtained from commutative finite group schemes by iterated performing semidirect products with commutative kernels and taking quotients by normal subgroups. In this article, for an étale tame semicommutative finite group scheme $G$, we give a lower bound on the number of connected $G$-torsors of bounded height (such as discriminant).
Generalized étale homotopy pro-groups $π_1^{\ets}(\mc{C}, x)$ associated to pointed connected small Grothendieck sites $(\mc{C}, x)$ are defined and their relationship to Galois theory and the theory of pointed torsors for discrete groups is explained. Applications include new rigorous proofs of some folklore results around $π_1^{\ets}(\et{X}, x)$, a description of Grothendieck's short exact sequence for Galois descent in terms of pointed torsor trivializations, and a new étale van Kampen theorem which gives a simple statement about a pushout square of pro-groups that works for covering famili…
Let $X$ be a projective, connected and smooth scheme defined over an algebraically closed field $k$. In this paper we prove that a tower of finite torsors (i.e., under the action of finite $k$-group schemes) can be dominated by a single finite torsor. Let $G$ be any finite $k$-group scheme and $Y$ any $G$--torsor over $X$ pointed in $y\,\in\, Y(k)$; we define over $Y$, which may not be reduced, in a very natural way the categories of Nori-semistable and essentially finite vector bundles. These categories are proved to be Tannakian. Their Galois $k$-group schemes $π^S(Y,\,y)$ and $π^N(Y,\,y)$, …
Given a relative faithfully flat pointed scheme over the spectrum of a discrete valuation ring $X \to S$ this paper is motivated by the study of the natural morphism from the fundamental group scheme of the generic fiber $X_η$ to the generic fiber of the fundamental group scheme of $X$. Given a torsor $T \to X_η$ under an affine group scheme $G$ over the generic fiber of $X$, we address the question to find a model of this torsor over $X$, focusing in particular on the case where $G$ is finite. We obtain partial answers to this question, showing for instance that, when $X$ is integral and regu…
Let C $\rightarrow$ Spec(R) be a relative proper flat curve over an henselian base. Let G be a reductive C-group scheme. Under mild technical assumptions, we show that a G-torsor over C which is trivial on the closed fiber of C is locally trivial for the Zariski topology.
Let $R$ be a discrete valuation ring with fraction field $K$. Let $X$ be a proper and faithfully flat $R$-scheme, endowed with a section $x \in X(R)$, with connected and reduced generic fibre $X_η$. Let $f: Y \rightarrow X_η$ be a finite Nori-reduced $G$-torsor. In this paper we provide a useful criterion to extend $f: Y \rightarrow X_η$ to a torsor over $X$. Furthermore in the particular situation where $R$ is a complete discrete valuation ring of residue characteristic $p>0$ and $X\to \text{Spec}(R)$ is smooth we apply our criterion to prove that the natural morphism $ψ^{(p')}: π(X_η,x_η)^{(…
In this short paper we first recall the definition and the construction of the fundamental group scheme of a scheme $X$ in the known cases: when it is defined over a field and when it is defined over a Dedekind scheme. It classifies all the finite (or quasi-finite) fpqc torsors over $X$. When $X$ is defined over a noetherian regular scheme $S$ of any dimension we do not know if such an object can be constructed. This is why we introduce a new category, containing the fpqc torsors, whose objects are torsors for a new topology. We prove that this new category is cofiltered thus generating a fund…
Let $p:Σ'\toΣ$ be a finite Galois cover, possibly branched, with Galois group $G$. We are interested in the structure of the cohomology of $Σ'$ as a module over $G$. We treat the cases of branched and unbranched covers separately. In the case of branched covers, we give a complete classification of possible module structures of $H_1(Σ',\bC)$. In the unbranched case, we algebro-geometrically realize the representation of $G$ on holomorphic 1-forms on $Σ'$ as functions on unions of $G$-torsors. We also explicitly realize these representations for certain branched covers of hyperelliptic curves. …
Given a Henselian and Japanese discrete valuation ring $A$ and a flat and projective $A$-scheme $X$, we follow the approach of Biswas-dos Santos to introduce a full subcategory of coherent modules on $X$ which is then shown to be Tannakian. We then prove that, under normality of the generic fibre, the associated affine and flat group is pro-finite in a strong sense (so that its ring of functions is a Mittag-Leffler $A$-module) and that it classifies finite torsors $Q\to X$. This establishes an analogy to Nori's theory of the essentially finite fundamental group. In addition, we compare our the…
Let U be an open subset of a unirational variety. We prove that there is rational curve C in U such that the fundamental group of C surjects onto the fundamental group of U. As a consequence we obtain new proofs of the theorems of Harbater and Colliot-Thélène on Galois covers and torsors over the p-adic line. We also obtain examples of pencils of curves of genus <14 whose monodromy group is the full Teichmüller group.
Let R be a discrete valuation ring of unequal characteristic with fraction field K which contains a primitive p^2-th root of unity. Let X be a faithfully flat R-scheme and G be a finite abstract group. Let us consider a G-torsor Y_K\to X_K and let Y be the normalization of X_K in Y. If G=Z/p^n Z, n<3, under some hypothesis on X, we attach some invariants to Y_K \to X_K. If p>2, we determine, through these invariants, when Y\to X has a structure of torsor which extends that of Y_K\to X_K. Moreover we explicitly calculate the effective model (defined by Romagny) of the action of G on Y.
We describe in this note a torsor structure arising on the affine scheme defined by a system of rationnal algebraic relations between polyzetas at roots of unity (values of hyperlogarithmic functions on a fixed finite group of complex roots of unity). When this group is reduced to 1, we call these numbers the polyzetas. They generalize the values of the Riemann zeta function at odd positive integers and are also called MZVs, multizetas, multiple harmonic series or Euler/Zagier sums. It is believed that the relations we consider here span all algebraic relations between them. The torsor structu…
In the first part of this paper we study the coaction dual to the action of the cosmic Galois group on the motivic lift of the sunrise Feynman integral with generic masses and momenta, and we express its conjugates in terms of motivic lifts of Feynman integrals associated to related Feynman graphs. Only one of the conjugates of the motivic lift of the sunrise, other than itself, can be expressed in terms of motivic lifts of Feynman integrals of subquotient graphs. To relate the remaining conjugates to Feynman integrals we introduce a general tool: subdiving edges of a graph. We show that all m…
In this article, we study the log-scheme theoretic version of the Nori fundamental group scheme. Similar to the classical Nori fundamental group scheme, the log Nori fundamental group scheme classifies torsors on log flat topology. We also compute the nilpotent pro-p quotient of the log Nori fundamental group scheme with log at $\{0, 1, \infty\}$.
We study affine group schemes over a discrete valuation ring $R$ using two techniques: Neron blowups and Tannakian categories. We employ the theory developed to define and study differential Galois groups of $\mathcal D$-modules on a scheme over a $R$. This throws light on how differential Galois groups of families degenerate.
Suppose O is a complete discrete valuation ring of positive characteristic with perfect residue field. The category of finite flat strict modules was introduced recently by Faltings and appears as an equal characteristic analogue of the classical category of finite flat group schemes. In this paper we obtain a classification of these modules and apply it to prove analogues of properties, which were known earlier for group schemes.
We prove that the non-ordinary component is connected in the moduli spaces of finite flat models of two-dimensional local Galois representations over finite fields. This was conjectured by Kisin. As an application to global Galois representations, we prove a theorem on the modularity comparing a deformation ring and a Hecke ring.
We consider the moduli space, in the sense of Kisin, of finite flat models of a 2-dimensional representation with values in a finite field of the absolute Galois group of a totally ramified extension of $mathbb{Q}_p$. We determine the connected components of this space and describe its irreducible components. These results prove a modified version of a conjecture of Kisin.
We determine the mod p cohomological invariants for several affine group schemes G in chararacteristic p. These are invariants of G-torsors with values in etale motivic cohomology, or equivalently in Kato's version of Galois cohomology based on differential forms. In particular, we find the mod 2 cohomological invariants for the symmetric groups and the orthogonal groups in characteristic 2, which Serre computed in characteristic not 2. We also determine all operations on the mod p etale motivic cohomology of fields, extending Vial's computations of the operations on the mod p Milnor K-theory …
Given a flat, finite group scheme G finitely presented over a base scheme we introduce the notion of ramified Galois cover of group G (or simply G-cover), which generalizes the notion of G-torsor. We study the stack of G-covers, denoted with G-Cov, mainly in the abelian case, precisely when G is a finite diagonalizable group scheme over Z. In this case we prove that G-Cov is connected, but it is irreducible or smooth only in few finitely many cases. On the other hand, it contains a 'special' irreducible component Z_G, which is the closure of BG and this reflects the deep connection we establis…
Given a finite, flat and finitely presented group scheme $G$ over some base $S$, we introduce the notion of ramified $G$-covers and study the moduli stack $G$-Cov they form. The thesis is divided in three parts. The first one concerns the case when $G$ is a diagonalizable group scheme and it essentially coincides with arxiv:1106.2347. In the second part I deal with the general case. Assuming that the base S is affine and given an $S$-scheme $T$, I interpret $G$-covers of $T$ as particolar (lax) monoidal functors from the category of finite, $G$-equivariant locally free sheaves over $S$ to the …
The coefficient space is a kind of resolution of singularities of the universal flat deformation space for a given Galois representation of some local field. It parameterizes (in some sense) the finite flat models for the Galois representation. The aim of this note is to determine the image of the coefficient space in the universal deformation space.
The aim of this paper is to study the group of isomorphism classes of torsors of finite flat group schemes of rank 2 over a commutative ring $R$. This, in particular, generalises the group of quadratic algebras (free or projective), which is especially well studied. Our approach however, yields new results even in this case.
Let $S$ be a connected Dedekind scheme and $X$ an $S$-scheme provided with a section $x$. We prove that the morphism of fundamental group schemes $π_1(X,x)^{ab}\to π_1(\mathbf{Alb}_{X/S},0_{\mathbf{Alb}_{X/S}})$ induced by the canonical morphism from $X$ to its Albanese scheme $\mathbf{Alb}_{X/S}$ (when the latter exists) fits in an exact sequence of group schemes $0\to (\mathbf{NS}^τ_{X/S})^{\vee}\to π_1(X,x)^{ab}\to π_1(\mathbf{Alb}_{X/S},0_{\mathbf{Alb}_{X/S}}) \to 0$ where the kernel is a finite and flat $S$-group scheme. Furthermore we prove that any finite and commutative quotient pointe…
We determine the type of the zeta functions and the range of the dimensions of the moduli spaces of finite flat models of two-dimensional local Galois representations over finite fields. This gives a generalization of Raynaud's theorem on the uniqueness of finite flat models in low ramifications.
