We prove the equivalence of Hardy- and Sobolev-type inequalities, certain uniform bounds on the heat kernel and some spectral regularity properties of the Neumann Laplacian associated with an arbitrary region of finite measure in Euclidean space. We also prove that if one perturbs the boundary of the region within a uniform Hölder category then the eigenvalues of the Neumann Laplacian change by a small and explicitly estimated amount.

Several sums of Neumann series with Bessel and trigonometric functions are evaluated, as finite sums of trigonometric functions. They arise from a generalization of the Neumann expansion of the eigenstates of the Laplacian in regular polygons.
We consider a domain with a small compact set of zero Lebesgue measure of removed. Our main result concerns the spectrum of the Neumann Laplacian defined on such domain. We prove that the spectrum of the Laplacian converges in the Hausdorff distance sense to the spectrum of the Laplacian defined on the unperturbed domain.
In the present article we will give a new proof of the ground state asymptotics of the Dirichlet Laplacian with a Neumann window acting on functions which are defined on a two-dimensional infinite strip or a three-dimensional infinite layer. The proof is based on the analysis of the corresponding Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator as a first order classical pseudo-differential operator. Using the explicit representation of its symbol we prove an asymptotic expansion as the window length decreases.
The robustness of manifold learning methods is often predicated on the stability of the Neumann Laplacian eigenfunctions under deformations of the assumed underlying domain. Indeed, many manifold learning methods are based on approximating the Neumann Laplacian eigenfunctions on a manifold that is assumed to underlie data, which is viewed through a source of distortion. In this paper, we study the stability of the first Neumann Laplacian eigenfunction with respect to deformations of a domain by a diffeomorphism. In particular, we are interested in the stability of the first eigenfunction on ta…
We study the $\bar\partial$-Neumann Laplacian from spectral theoretic perspectives. In particular, we show how pseudoconvexity of a bounded domain is characterized by positivity of the $\bar\partial$-Neumann Laplacian.
In this note we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the $s$-numbers of the resolvent difference of two generalized self-adjoint, maximal dissipative or maximal accumulative Robin Laplacians on a bounded domain $Ω$ with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$. For this we apply the recently introduced abstract notion of quasi boundary triples and Weyl functions from extension theory of symmetric operators together with Krein type resolvent formulae and well-known eigenvalue asymptotics of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $\partialΩ$. It will be shown that the resolvent difference of two generalized Rob…
The spectrum of the d-bar-Neumann Laplacian on a polydisc in several complex variables is explicitly computed. The calculation exhibits that the spectrum consists of eigenvalues, some of which, in particular the smallest ones, are of infinite multiplicity.
This article deals with the spectral analysis of the semiclassical Neumann magnetic Laplacian on a smooth bounded domain in dimension three. When the magnetic field is constant and in the semiclassical limit, we establish a four-term asymptotic expansion of the low-lying eigenvalues, involving a geometric quantity along the apparent contour of the domain in the direction of the field. In particular, we prove that they are simple.
This article gives a domain with a small compact set of removed and the magnetic Neumann Laplacian on such set. The main theorem of this article shows the description of the holes which do not change the spectrum drastically. In this article we prove that the spectrum of the magnetic Neumann Laplacian converges in the Hausdorff distance sense to the spectrum of the original operator defined on the unperturbed domain.
We study extrema of the first and the second mixed eigenvalues of the Laplacian on the disk among some families of Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions. We show that the minimizer of the second eigenvalue among all mixed boundary conditions lies in a compact 1-parameter family for which an explicit description is given. Moreover, we prove that among all partitions of the boundary with bounded number of parts on which Dirichlet and Neumann conditions are imposed alternately, the first eigenvalue is maximized by the uniformly distributed partition.
We deal with eigenvalue problems for the Laplacian with varying mixed boundary conditions, consisting in homogeneous Neumann conditions on a vanishing portion of the boundary and Dirichlet conditions on the complement. By the study of an Almgren type frequency function, we derive upper and lower bounds of the eigenvalue variation and sharp estimates in the case of a strictly star-shaped Neumann region.
We will study the spectral problem related to the Laplace operator in a singularly perturbed periodic waveguide. The waveguide is a quasi-cylinder with contains periodic arrangement of inclusions. On the boundary of the waveguide we consider both Neumann and Dirichlet conditions. We will prove that provided the diameter of the inclusion is small enough in the spectrum of Laplacian opens spectral gaps, i.e. frequencies that does not propagate through the waveguide. The existence of the band gaps will verified using the asymptotic analysis of elliptic operators.
In this paper we study the self-adjoint Krein-von Neumann realization $A_K$ of the perturbed Laplacian $-Δ+V$ in a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^n$. We provide an explicit and self-contained description of the domain of $A_K$ in terms of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary traces, and we establish a Weyl asymptotic formula for the eigenvalues of $A_K$.
The difference of the resolvents of two Laplacians on a half-space subject to Robin boundary conditions is studied. In general this difference is not compact, but it will be shown that it is compact and even belongs to some Schatten-von-Neumann class, if the coefficients in the boundary condition are sufficiently close to each other in a proper sense. In certain cases the resolvent difference is shown to belong even to the same Schatten-von Neumann class as it is known for the resolvent difference of two Robin Laplacians on a domain with a compact boundary.
The first terms of the small volume asymptotic expansion for the splitting of Neumann boundary condition Laplacian eigenvalues due to a grounded inclusion of size ε are derived. An explicit formula to compute the first term from the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the unperturbed domain, the inclusion size and position is given. As a consequence, when an eigenvalue of double multiplicity splits in two distinct eigenvalues, one decays like O(1/log(ε)), the other like O(ε^2).
We demonstrate how to approximate one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with $δ$-interaction by a Neumann Laplacian on a narrow waveguide-like domain. Namely, we consider a domain consisting of a straight strip and a small protuberance with "room-and-passage" geometry. We show that in the limit when the perpendicular size of the strip tends to zero, and the room and the passage are appropriately scaled, the Neumann Laplacian on this domain converges in (a kind of) norm resolvent sense to the above singular Schrödinger operator. Also we prove Hausdorff convergence of the spectra. In both cases …
Å Pleijel has proved that in the case of the Laplacian on the square with Neumann condition, the equality in the Courant nodal theorem (Courant sharp situation) can only be true for a finite number of eigenvalues. We identify five Courant sharp eigenvalues for the Neumann Laplacian in the square, and prove that there are no other cases.
In this paper we are interested in the semi-classical estimates of the spectrum of the Neumann Laplacian in dimension 3. This work aims to present a complementary case to the one presented in the paper of Helffer and Morame in the case of constant magnetic field. More precisely, in the case when the magnetic field is variable and under the most generic condition for which boundary localizations can be observed, we prove a three terms upper bound for the lowest eigenvalue and establish some semi-classical behaviour of the spectrum.
How close is the Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) map to the square root of the corresponding boundary Laplacian? This question has been actively investigated in recent years. Somewhat surprisingly, a lot of techniques involved can be traced back to a newly rediscovered manuscript of Hörmander from the 1950s. We present Hörmander's approach and its applications, with an emphasis on eigenvalue estimates and spectral asymptotics. In particular, we obtain results for the DtN maps on non-smooth boundaries in the Riemannian setting, the DtN operators for the Helmholtz equation and the DtN operators on di…
We prove that for any domain in the Heisenberg group the (k+1)'th Neumann eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian is strictly less than the k'th Dirichlet eigenvalue. As a byproduct we obtain similar inequalities for the Euclidean Laplacian with a homogeneous magnetic field.
We consider the Laplacian in a domain squeezed between two parallel hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces of any dimension, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on one of the hypersurfaces and Neumann boundary conditions on the other. We derive two-term asymptotics for eigenvalues in the limit when the distance between the hypersurfaces tends to zero. The asymptotics are uniform and local in the sense that the coefficients depend only on the extremal points where the ratio of the area of the Neumann boundary to the Dirichlet one is locally the biggest.
We investigate tensor products of Hilbert complexes, in particular the (essential) spectrum of their Laplacians. It is shown that the essential spectrum of the Laplacian associated to the tensor product complex is computable in terms of the spectra of the factors. Applications are given for the $\overline\partial$-Neumann problem on the product of two or more Hermitian manifolds, especially regarding (non-) compactness of the associated $\overline\partial$-Neumann operator.
In the first (and abstract) part of this survey we prove the unitary equivalence of the inverse of the Krein--von Neumann extension (on the orthogonal complement of its kernel) of a densely defined, closed, strictly positive operator, $S\geq \varepsilon I_{\mathcal{H}}$ for some $\varepsilon >0$ in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ to an abstract buckling problem operator. This establishes the Krein extension as a natural object in elasticity theory (in analogy to the Friedrichs extension, which found natural applications in quantum mechanics, elasticity, etc.). In the second, and principal part o…
The article deals with a convergence of the spectrum of the Neumann Laplacian in a periodic unbounded domain $Ω^\varepsilon$ depending on a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$. The domain has the form $Ω^\varepsilon=\mathbb{R}^n\setminus S^\varepsilon$, where $S^\varepsilon$ is an $\varepsilon\mathbb{Z}^n$-periodic family of trap-like screens. We prove that for an arbitrarily large $L$ the spectrum has just one gap in $[0,L]$ when $\varepsilon$ small enough, moreover when $\varepsilon\to 0$ this gap converges to some interval whose edges can be controlled by a suitable choice of geometry of the sc…
We consider the Laplacian in a domain squeezed between two parallel curves in the plane, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions on one of the curves and Neumann boundary conditions on the other. We derive two-term asymptotics for eigenvalues in the limit when the distance between the curves tends to zero. The asymptotics are uniform and local in the sense that the coefficients depend only on the extremal points where the ratio of the curvature radii of the Neumann boundary to the Dirichlet one is the biggest. We also show that the asymptotics can be obtained from a form of norm-resolvent con…
We analyze the behavior of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions when the domain is perturbed. We focus on exterior perturbations of the domain, that is, the limit domain is contained in each of the perturbed domains. Moreover, the family of perturbed domains is made up of bounded domains although not necessarily uniformly bounded. We show that if we know that the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the perturbed domains converge to the ones of the limit domain, then necessarily we have that the measure of the perturbation tends t…
Inequalities for the eigenvalues of the (negative) Laplacian subject to mixed boundary conditions on polyhedral and more general bounded domains are established. The eigenvalues subject to a Dirichlet boundary condition on a part of the boundary and a Neumann boundary condition on the remainder of the boundary are estimated in terms of either Dirichlet or Neumann eigenvalues. The results complement several classical inequalities between Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues due to Pólya, Payne, Levine and Weinberger, Friedlander, and others.
The aim of this paper is to establish estimates of the lowest eigenvalue of the Neumann realization of $(i\nabla+B\textbf{A})^2$ on an open bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}^2$ $Ω$ with smooth boundary as $B$ tends to infinity. We introduce a "magnetic" curvature mixing the curvature of $\partialΩ$ and the normal derivative of the magnetic field and obtain an estimate analogous with the one of constant case. Actually, we give a precise estimate of the lowest eigenvalue in the case where the restriction of magnetic field to the boundary admits a unique minimum which is non degenerate. We also give …
We consider the Laplacian in a straight strip, subject to a combination of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. We show that a switch of the respective boundary conditions leads to a Hardy inequality for the Laplacian. As a byproduct of our method, we obtain a simple proof of a theorem of Dittrich and Kriz.
For a compact, connected metric graphs with a boundary that consists of $k$ vertices, we prove that an arbitrary symmetric $k\times k$ matrix with real entries can be realized as the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator for the Laplacian plus a constant.
Given the Laplacian on a planar, convex domain with piecewise linear boundary subject to mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions, we provide a sufficient condition for its lowest eigenvalue to dominate the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian with the complementary boundary conditions (i.e. with Dirichlet replaced by Neumann and vice versa). The application of this result to triangles gives an affirmative partial answer to a recent conjecture. Moreover, we prove a further observation of similar flavor for right triangles.
We study the ground state energy of the Neumann magnetic Laplacian on planar domains. For a constant magnetic field we consider the question whether, under an assumption of fixed area, the disc maximizes this eigenvalue. More generally, we discuss old and new bounds obtained on this problem.
We prove sharp isoperimetric inequalities for Neumann eigenvalues of the Laplacian on triangular domains. The first nonzero Neumann eigenvalue is shown to be maximal for the equilateral triangle among all triangles of given perimeter, and hence among all triangles of given area. Similar results are proved for the harmonic and arithmetic means of the first two nonzero eigenvalues.
