We discuss one parameter families of unimodal maps, with negative Schwarzian derivative, unfolding a saddle-node bifurcation. It was previously shown that for a parameter set of positive Lebesgue density at the bifurcation, the maps possess attracting periodic orbits of high period. We show that there is also a parameter set of positive density at the bifurcation, for which the maps exhibit absolutely continuous invariant measures which are supported on the largest possible interval. We prove that these measures converge weakly to an atomic measure supported on the orbit of the saddle-node point. Using these measures we analyze the intermittent time series that result from the destruction of the periodic attractor in the saddle-node bifurcation and prove asymptotic formulae for the frequency with which orbits visit the region previously occupied by the periodic attractor.
We study bifurcations of homoclinic orbits to hyperbolic saddle equilibria in a class of four-dimensional systems which may be Hamiltonian or not. Only one parameter is enough to treat these types of bifurcations in Hamiltonian systems but two parameters are needed in general systems. We apply a version of Melnikov's method due to Gruendler to obtain saddle-node and pitchfork types of bifurcation results for homoclinic orbits. Furthermore we prove that if these bifurcations occur, then the variational equations around the homoclinic orbits are integrable in the meaning of differential Galois t…
Non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations give rise to minimal sets of interesting geometry built of so-called strange non-chaotic attractors. We show that certain families of quasiperiodically driven logistic differential equations undergo a non-smooth bifurcation. By a previous result on the occurrence of non-smooth bifurcations in forced discrete time dynamical systems, this yields that within the class of families of quasiperiodically driven differential equations, non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations occur in a set with non-empty C2-interior.
In this paper, we consider a smooth arc of diffeomorphisms which has a saddle-node bifurcation inside a nontrivial invariant set which is a deformation of a horseshoe. We show that this saddle-node bifurcation is isolated, that is, its hyperbolicity is maintained before and after the saddle-node bifurcation. Moreover we construct a $C^2$-open set of arcs having the same property.
We study main bifurcations of multidimensional diffeomorphisms having a non-transversal homoclinic orbit to a saddle-node fixed point. On a parameter plane we build a bifurcation diagram for single-round periodic orbits lying entirely in a small neighbourhood of the homoclinic orbit. Also a relation of our results to well-known codimension one bifurcations of a saddle fixed point with a quadratic homoclinic tangency and a saddle-node fixed point with a transversal homoclinic orbit is discussed.
This paper presents results concerning bifurcations of 2D piecewise-smooth dynamical systems governed by vector fields. Generic three parameter families of a class of Non-Smooth Vector Fields are studied and its bifurcation diagrams are exhibited. Our main result describes the unfolding of the so called Fold-Saddle singularity.
We study the dynamics of an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) model, under the Lennard-Jones force with non-linear damping, and harmonic forcing. We establish the bifurcation diagrams for equilibria in a conservative system. Particularly, we present conditions that guarantee the local existence of saddle-node bifurcations. By using the Melnikov method, the region in the space parameters where the persistence of homoclinic orbits is determined in a non-conservative system.
In a smooth dynamical system, a homoclinic connection is a closed orbit returning to a saddle equilibrium. Under perturbation, homoclinics are associated with bifurcations of periodic orbits, and with chaos in higher dimensions. Homoclinic connections in nonsmooth systems are complicated by their interaction with discontinuities in their vector fields. A connection may involve a regular saddle outside a discontinuity set, or a pseudo-saddle on a discontinuity set, with segments of the connection allowed to cross or slide along the discontinuity. Even the simplest case, that of connection to a …
We show that heterodimensional cycles can be born at the bifurcations of a pair of homoclinic loops to a saddle-focus equilibrium for flows in dimension 4 and higher. In addition to the classical heterodimensional connection between two periodic orbits, we found two new types of heterodimensional connections: one is a heteroclinic between a periodic orbit of index 2 and a homoclinic loop, and the other connects a periodic orbit of index 3 to the saddle-focus equilibrium.
In this paper we study the bifurcations of a class of polycycles, called lips, occurring in generic three-parameter smooth families of vector fields on a Möbius band. The lips consists of a set of polycycles formed by two saddle-nodes, one attracting and the other repelling, connected by the hyperbolic separatrices of the saddle-nodes and by orbits interior to both nodal sectors. We determine, under certain genericity hypotheses, the maximum number of limits cycles that may bifurcate from a graphic belonging to the lips and we describe its bifurcation diagram.
A saddle to saddle-focus homoclinic transition when the stable leading eigenspace is 3-dimensional (called the 3DL bifurcation) is analyzed. Here a pair of complex eigenvalues and a real eigenvalue exchange their position relative to the imaginary axis, giving rise to a 3-dimensional stable leading eigenspace. This transition is different from the standard Belyakov bifurcation, where a double real eigenvalue splits either into a pair of complex-conjugate eigenvalues or two distinct real eigenvalues. In the wild case, we obtain sets of codimension 1 and 2 bifurcation curves and points that asym…
We study the geometric and topological properties of strange non-chaotic attractors created in non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations of quasiperiodically forced interval maps. By interpreting the attractors as limit objects of the iterates of a continuous curve and controlling the geometry of the latter, we determine their Hausdorff and box-counting dimension and show that these take distinct values. Moreover, the same approach allows to describe the topological structure of the attractors and to prove their minimality.
It was established in 2006 that bifurcations of three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle-focus fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1 can lead to Lorenz-like strange attractors. In the present paper we prove an analogous result for three-dimensional diffeomorphisms with a homoclinic tangency to a saddle fixed point with the Jacobian equal to 1, provided the quadratic homoclinic tangency under consideration is non-simple.
In this paper, we deal with limit cycle bifurcations near a double homoclinic loop with a nilpotent saddle of order 2 by studying expansions of the first order Melnikov functions near the loop and coefficients in these expansions. More precisely, we prove that the perturbed system can have 11, 13, 14 or 16 limit cycles in a neighborhood of the loop under certain conditions. Finally, we give an example to illustrate the effectiveness of our main results.
We study the interaction of saddle-node and transcritical bifurcations in a Lotka-Volterra model with a constant term representing harvesting or migration. Because some of the equilibria of the model lie on an invariant coordinate axis, both the saddle-node and the transcritical bifurcations are of codimension one. Their interaction can be associated with either a single or a double zero eigenvalue. We show that in the former case, the local bifurcation diagram is given by a nonversal unfolding of the cusp bifurcation whereas in the latter case it is a nonversal unfolding of a degenerate Bogda…
We consider the scalar delay differential equation $$ \dot{x}(t)=-x(t)+f_{K}(x(t-1)) $$ with a nondecreasing feedback function $f_{K}$ depending on a parameter $K$, and we verify that a saddle-node bifurcation of periodic orbits takes place as $K$ varies. The nonlinearity $f_{K}$ is chosen so that it has two unstable fixed points (hence the dynamical system has two unstable equilibria), and these fixed points remain bounded away from each other as $K$ changes. The generated periodic orbits are of large amplitude in the sense that they oscillate about both unstable fixed points of $f_{K}$.
Three-dimensional convex bodies can be classified in terms of the number and stability types of critical points on which they can balance at rest on a horizontal plane. For typical bodies these are nondegenerate maxima, minima, and saddle-points, the numbers of which provide a primary classification. Secondary and tertiary classifications use graphs to describe orbits connecting these critical points in the gradient vector field associated with each body. In previous work it was shown that these classifications are complete in that no class is empty. Here we construct 1- and 2-parameter famili…
We study one-parameter families of quasi-periodically forced monotone interval maps and provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a parameter at which the respective system possesses a non-uniformly hyperbolic attractor. This is equivalent to the existence of a sink-source orbit, that is, an orbit with positive Lyapunov exponent both forwards and backwards in time. The attractor itself is a non-continuous invariant graph with negative Lyapunov exponent, often referred to as "SNA". In contrast to former results in this direction, our conditions are C^2-open in the fibre maps. By applyi…
The scaling of the time delay near a "bottleneck" of a generic saddle-node bifurcation is well-known to be given by an inverse square-root law. We extend the analysis to several non-generic cases for smooth vector fields. We proceed to investigate $C^0$ vector fields. Our main result is a new phenomenon in two-parameter families having a saddle-node bifurcation upon changing the first parameter. We find distinct scalings for different values of the second parameter ranging from power laws with exponents in (0,1) to scalings given by O(1). We illustrate this rapid quantitative change of the sca…
When a real saddle equilibrium in a three-dimensional vector field undergoes a homoclinic bifurcation, the associated two-dimensional invariant manifold of the equilibrium closes on itself in an orientable or non-orientable way. We are interested in the interaction between global invariant manifolds of saddle equilibria and saddle periodic orbits for a vector field close to a codimension-two homoclinic flip bifurcation, that is, the point of transition between having an orientable or non-orientable two-dimensional surface. Here, we focus on homoclinic flip bifurcations of case $\textbf{B}$, wh…
We show that a one-dimensional differential equation depending on a parameter $μ$ with a saddle-node bifurcation at $μ=0$ can be modelled by an extended normal form $\dot y = ν(μ)-y^2+a(μ)y^3$, where the functions $ν$ and $a$ are solutions to equations that can be written down explicitly. The equivalence to the original equations is a local differentiable conjugacy on the basins of attraction and repulsion of stationary points in the parameter region for which these exist, and is a differentiable conjugacy on the whole local interval otherwise. (Recall that in standard approaches local equival…
We propose a general mechanism by which strange non-chaotic attractors (SNA) are created during the collision of invariant curves in quasiperiodically forced systems. This mechanism is first discussed on an heuristic level and by means of simulations. In the considered examples, a stable and an unstable invariant circle undergo a saddle-node bifurcation, but instead of a neutral invariant curve there exists a strange non-chaotic attractor-repeller pair at the bifurcation point. This process is accompanied by a very characteristic behaviour of the invariant curves prior to their collision, whic…
In this work we analyze the bifurcation of dividing surfaces that occurs as a result of a pitchfork bifurcation of periodic orbits in a two degrees of freedom Hamiltonian System. The potential energy surface of the system that we consider has four critical points: two minima, a high energy saddle and a lower energy saddle separating two wells (minima). In this paper we study the structure, the range, and the minimum and maximum extent of the periodic orbit dividing surfaces of the family of periodic orbits of the lower saddle as a function of the total energy.
In this paper, we study the quantum dynamics of a one degree-of-freedom (DOF) Hamiltonian that is a normal form for a saddle node bifurcation of equilibrium points in phase space. The Hamiltonian has the form of the sum of kinetic energy and potential energy. The bifurcation parameter is in the potential energy function and its effect on the potential energy is to vary the depth of the potential well. The main focus is to evaluate the effect of the depth of the well on the quantum dynamics. This evaluation is carried out through the computation of energy eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the tim…
In this paper, we study the realizability problem for retarded functional differential equations near an equilibrium point undergoing a nonlinear mode interaction between a saddle-node bifurcation and a non-resonant multiple Hopf bifurcation. In contrast to the case of transcritical/multiple Hopf interaction which was studied in an earlier paper, the analysis here is complicated by the presence of a nilpotency which introduces a non-compact component in the symmetry group of the normal form. We present a framework to analyse the realizability problem in this non-semisimple case which exploits …
We examine the interaction of transcritical and saddle-node bifurcations in a predator-prey-nutrient system that is stressed by the presence of a toxicant affecting the prey. This model, formulated by Kooi et al. ({\sl Ecol. Model.} {\bf 212}(2008), 304--318), has a two-dimensional invariant sub system with zero predator density. In the sub system, a pair of prey-nutrient equilibria is created in a saddle-node bifurcation, while predator invasion in modelled by a transcritical bifurcation of one of this pair. Interactions of these bifurcations at codimension-two points give rise to bistable, p…
The saddle-node bifurcation on an invariant circle (SNIC) is one of the codimension-one routes to creation or destruction of a periodic orbit in a continuous-time dynamical system. It governs the transition from resting behaviour to periodic spiking in many class I neurons, for example. Here, as a first step towards theory of networks of such units the effect of weak coupling between two systems with a SNIC is analysed. Two crucial parameters of the coupling are identified, which we call δ_1 and δ_2. Global bifurcation diagrams are obtained here for the "mutualistic" case δ_1 δ_2 > 0. Accordin…
In this article we present the influence of a Hamiltonian saddle-node bifurcation on the high-dimensional phase space structures that mediate reaction dynamics. To achieve this goal, we identify the phase space invariant manifolds using Lagrangian descriptors, which is a trajectory-based diagnostic suitable for the construction of a complete ``phase space tomography'' by means of analyzing dynamics on low-dimensional slices. First, we build a Hamiltonian system with one degree-of-freedom (DoF) that models reaction, and study the effect of adding a parameter to the potential energy function tha…
Using the technique of Poincaré return maps, we disclose an intricate order of the subsequent homoclinics near the primary homoclinic bifurcation of the Shilnikov saddle-focus in systems with reflection symmetry. We also reveal the admissible shapes of the corresponding bifurcation curves in a parameter plane of such systems. The scalability ratio of geometry and organization is proven to be universal for such homoclinic bifurcations of higher orders. Two applications with similar dynamics due to the Shilnikov saddle-foci, a smooth adaptation of the Chua circuit and a 3D normal form, are used …
There is a growing awareness that catastrophic phenomena in biology and medicine can be mathematically represented in terms of saddle-node bifurcations. In particular, the term `tipping', or critical transition has in recent years entered the discourse of the general public in relation to ecology, medicine, and public health. The saddle-node bifurcation and its associated theory of catastrophe as put forth by Thom and Zeeman has seen applications in a wide range of fields including molecular biophysics, mesoscopic physics, and climate science. In this paper, we investigate a simple model of a …
We describe all possible topological structures of typical one-parameter bifurcations of gradient flows on the 2-sphere with holes in the case that the number of singular point of flows is at most six. To describe structures, we separatrix diagrams of flows. The saddle-node singularity is specified by selecting a separatrix in the diagram of the flow befor the bifurcation and the saddle connection is specified by a separatrix, which conect two saddles.
An in-depth analysis of nonautonomous bifurcations of saddle-node type for scalar differential equations $x'=-x^2+q(t)\,x+p(t)$, where $q\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ and $p\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ are bounded and uniformly continuous, is fundamental to explain the absence or occurrence of rate-induced tipping for the differential equation $y' =(y-(2/π)\arctan(ct))^2+p(t)$ as the rate $c$ varies on $[0,\infty)$. A classical attractor-repeller pair, whose existence for $c=0$ is assumed, may persist for any $c>0$, or disappear for a certain critical rate $c=c_0$, giving rise to rate-induc…
In this paper, a modified van der Pol oscillator equation is considered which appears in several heart action models. We study its global dynamics and verify many interesting bifurcations such as a Hopf bifurcation, a heteroclinic saddle connection, and a homoclinic saddle connection. Some of these bifurcations are detected by using Conley index methods. We demonstrate how the study of connection matrices and transition matrices shows how to select interesting parameter values for simulations.
We study the effect of external forcing on the saddle-node bifurcation pattern of interval maps. By replacing fixed points of unperturbed maps by invariant graphs, we obtain direct analogues to the classical result both for random forcing by measure-preserving dynamical systems and for deterministic forcing by homeomorphisms of compact metric spaces. Additional assumptions like ergodicity or minimality of the forcing process then yield further information about the dynamics. The main difference to the unforced situation is that at the critical bifurcation parameter, two alternatives exist. In …
In this article we construct the parameter region where the existence of a homoclinic orbit to a zero equilibrium state of saddle type in the Lorenz-like system will be analytically proved in the case of a nonnegative saddle value. Then, for a qualitative description of the different types of homoclinic bifurcations, a numerical analysis of the detected parameter region is carried out to discover several new interesting bifurcation scenarios.
We consider the conservative Hénon family at the period-doubling bifurcation of its fixed point and demonstrate that the separatrices of the fixed saddle point nearing the bifurcation split exponentially: given that $λ_+$ is the smaller of the eigenvalues of the saddle point, the angle between the separatrices along the homoclinic orbit satisfies $$\sin α= O(e^{-{π^2 \over \log |λ_+|}})+ O\left( e^{-2 (1-κ) {π^2 \over \log |λ_+|}} \right),$$ for any positive $κ<1$.
This paper presents results concerning bifurcations of 2D piecewise-smooth vector fields. In particular, the generic unfoldings of codimension three fold-addle singularities of Filippov systems, where a boundary-saddle and a fold coincide, are considered and the bifurcation diagrams exhibited.
We study a homoclinic flip bifurcation of case~\textbf{C}, where a homoclinic orbit to a saddle equilibrium with real eigenvalues changes from being orientable to nonorientable. This bifurcation is of codimension two, and it is the lowest codimension for a homoclinic bifurcation of a real saddle to generate chaotic behavior in the form of (suspended) Smale horseshoes and strange attractors. We present a detailed numerical case study of how global stable and unstable manifolds of the saddle equilibrium and of bifurcating periodic orbits interact close to such bifurcation. This is a step forward…
We study generic two- and three-parameter unfoldings of a pair of orbits of quadratic homoclinic tangency in strongly dissipative systems. We prove that the corresponding stability windows for periodic orbits have various universal forms: the so-called "shrimps" (cross-road areas), as well as spring and saddle areas, and (in three-parameter unfoldings) "pregnant shrimps" (specific types of transitions between the shrimps and spring or saddle areas).
We study the effect of changes in the parameters of a two-dimensional potential energy surface on the phase space structures relevant for chemical reaction dynamics. The changes in the potential energy are representative of chemical reactions such as isomerization between two structural conformations or dissociation of a molecule with an intermediate. We present a two degrees of freedom quartic Hamiltonian that shows pitchfork bifurcation when the parameters are varied and we derive the bifurcation criteria relating the parameters. Next, we describe the phase space structures - unstable period…
Smooth planar vector fields containing two hyperbolic saddles may possess contours formed by heteroclinic connections between these saddles. We present an overview of the bifurcations of these contours based on papers by J.W. Reyn and A.V. Dukov. Additionally, two new explicit polynomial systems containing such contours are derived, which are studied using the bifurcation software MatCont and are shown to exhibit the theoretically predicted phenomena, including series of heteroclinic connections.
In this report, we consider a semi-infinite discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation driven at one edge by a driving force. The equation models the dynamics of coupled waveguide arrays. When the frequency of the forcing is in the allowed-band of the system, there will be a linear transmission of energy through the lattice. Yet, if the frequency is in the upper forbidden band, then there is a critical driving amplitude for a nonlinear tunneling, which is called supratransmission, of energy to occur. Here, we discuss mathematically the mechanism and the source of the supratransmission. By analyzi…
In this paper, we study the number of limit cycles that can bifurcate from a periodic annulus in discontinuous planar piecewise linear Hamiltonian differential system with three zones separated by two parallel straight lines, such that the linear differential systems that define the piecewise one have a center and two saddles. That is, the linear differential system in the region between the two parallel lines (i.e. the central subsystem) has a center and the others subsystems have saddles. We prove that if the central subsystem has a real or a boundary center, then we have at least six limit …
In this paper we present a general approach to rigorously validate Hopf bifurcations as well as saddle-node bifurcations of periodic orbits in systems of ODEs. By a combination of analytic estimates and computer-assisted calculations, we follow solution curves of cycles through folds, checking along the way that a single nondegenerate saddle-node bifurcation occurs. Similarly, we rigorously continue solution curves of cycles starting from their onset at a Hopf bifurcation. We use a blowup analysis to regularize the continuation problem near the Hopf bifurcation point. This extends the applicab…
This paper presents a mechanism for the coexistence of hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic dynamics arising in a neighbourhood of a conservative Bykov cycle where trajectories turn in opposite directions near the two saddle-foci. We show that {within the class of divergence-free vector fields that preserve the cycle,} tangencies of the invariant manifolds of two hyperbolic saddle-foci densely occur. The global dynamics is persistently dominated by heteroclinic tangencies and by the existence of infinitely many elliptic points coexisting with suspended hyperbolic horseshoes. A generalized version of …
