In this work we analyze the bifurcation of dividing surfaces that occurs as a result of a pitchfork bifurcation of periodic orbits in a two degrees of freedom Hamiltonian System. The potential energy surface of the system that we consider has four critical points: two minima, a high energy saddle and a lower energy saddle separating two wells (minima). In this paper we study the structure, the range, and the minimum and maximum extent of the periodic orbit dividing surfaces of the family of periodic orbits of the lower saddle as a function of the total energy.
We study stochastic bifurcation for a system under multiplicative stable Levy noise (an important class of non-Gaussian noise), by examining the qualitative changes of equilibrium states in its most probable phase portraits. We have found some peculiar bifurcation phenomena in contrast to the deterministic counterpart: (i) When the non-Gaussianity parameter in Levy noise varies, there is either one, two or none backward pitchfork type bifurcations; (ii) When a parameter in the vector field varies, there are two or three forward pitchfork bifurcations; (iii) The non-Gaussian Levy noise clearly …
Many organic chemical reactions are governed by potential energy surfaces that have a region with the topographical features of a caldera. If the caldera has a symmetry then trajectories transiting the caldera region are observed to exhibit a phenomenon that is referred to as dynamical matching. Dynamical matching is a constraint that restricts the way in which a trajectory can exit the caldera based solely on how it enters the caldera. In this paper we show that bifurcations of the critical points of the caldera potential energy surface can destroy dynamical matching even when the symmetry of…
We study the effect of changes in the parameters of a two-dimensional potential energy surface on the phase space structures relevant for chemical reaction dynamics. The changes in the potential energy are representative of chemical reactions such as isomerization between two structural conformations or dissociation of a molecule with an intermediate. We present a two degrees of freedom quartic Hamiltonian that shows pitchfork bifurcation when the parameters are varied and we derive the bifurcation criteria relating the parameters. Next, we describe the phase space structures - unstable period…
The slow drift (with speed $\eps$) of a parameter through a pitchfork bifurcation point, known as the dynamic pitchfork bifurcation, is characterized by a significant delay of the transition from the unstable to the stable state. We describe the effect of an additive noise, of intensity $σ$, by giving precise estimates on the behaviour of the individual paths. We show that until time $\sqrt\eps$ after the bifurcation, the paths are concentrated in a region of size $σ/\eps^{1/4}$ around the bifurcating equilibrium. With high probability, they leave a neighbourhood of this equilibrium during a t…
Highly symmetric networks can exhibit partly symmetry-broken states, including clusters and chimera states, i.e., states of coexisting synchronized and unsynchronized elements. We address the $\mathbb{S}_4$ permutation symmetry of four globally coupled Stuart-Landau oscillators and uncover an interconnected web of differently symmetric solutions. Among these are chaotic $2\!-\!1\!-\!1$ minimal chimeras that arise from $2\!-\!1\!-\!1$ periodic solutions in a period-doubling cascade, as well as fully asymmetric chaotic states arising similarly from periodic $1\!-\!1\!-\!1\!-\!1$ solutions. A bac…
In non-integrable Hamiltonian systems with mixed phase space and discrete symmetries, sequences of pitchfork bifurcations of periodic orbits pave the way from integrability to chaos. In extending the semiclassical trace formula for the spectral density, we develop a uniform approximation for the combined contribution of pitchfork bifurcation pairs. For a two-dimensional double-well potential and the familiar Hénon-Heiles potential, we obtain very good agreement with exact quantum-mechanical calculations. We also consider the integrable limit of the scenario which corresponds to the bifurcation…
The most important characteristic of {\em multiplicative noise} is that its effects of system's dynamics depends on the recent system's state. Consideration of multiplicative noise on self-referential systems including biological and economical systems therefore is of importance. In this note we study an elementary example. While in a deterministic super critical pitchfork bifurcation with positive bifurcation parameter $λ$ the positive branch $\sqrtλ$ is stable, multiplicative white noise $λ_t =λ + σζ_t$ on the unique parameter reduces stability in that the system's state tends to 0 almost su…
This paper presents an investigation of the dynamics of two coupled non-identical FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons with delayed synaptic connection. We consider coupling strength and time delay as bifurcation parameters, and try to classify all possible dynamics which is fairly rich. The neural system exhibits a unique rest point or three ones for the different values of coupling strength by employing the pitchfork bifurcation of non-trivial rest point. The asymptotic stability and possible Hopf bifurcations of the trivial rest point are studied by analyzing the corresponding characteristic equation. H…
We present a quantitative semiclassical treatment of the effects of bifurcations on the spectral rigidity and the spectral form factor of a Hamiltonian quantum system defined by two coupled quartic oscillators, which on the classical level exhibits mixed phase space dynamics. We show that the signature of a pitchfork bifurcation is two-fold: Beside the known effect of an enhanced periodic orbit contribution due to its peculiar $\hbar$-dependence at the bifurcation, we demonstrate that the orbit pair born {\em at} the bifurcation gives rise to distinct deviations from universality slightly {\em…
We demonstrate that the method of coupled Gaussian wave packets is a full-fledged alternative to direct numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation of condensates with electromagnetically induced attractive 1/r interaction, or with dipole-dipole interaction. Moreover, Gaussian wave packets are superior in that they are capable of producing both stable and unstable stationary solutions, and thus of giving access to yet unexplored regions of the space of solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We apply the method to clarify the theoretical nature of the collapse mechanism of blood-c…
The motion of small, spherical particles of finite size in fluid flows at low Reynolds numbers is described by the strongly nonlinear Maxey-Riley equations. Due to the Stokes drag the particle motion is dissipative, giving rise to the possibility of attractors in phase space. We investigate the case of an infinite, cellular flow field with time-periodic forcing. The dynamics of this system are studied in a part of the parameter space. We focus particularly on the size of the particles whose variations are most important in active, physical processes, for example for aggregation and fragmentati…
A transition state for a Hamiltonian system is a closed, invariant, oriented, codimension-2 submanifold of an energy-level that can be spanned by two compact codimension-1 surfaces of unidirectional flux whose union, called a dividing surface, locally separates the energy-level into two components and has no local recrossings. For this to happen robustly to all smooth perturbations, the transition state must be normally hyperbolic. The dividing surface then has locally minimal geometric flux through it, giving an upper bound on the rate of transport in either direction. Transition states diffe…
We present an experimental and theoretical study of an unusual bursting mechanism in a two-mode semiconductor laser with single-mode optical injection. By tuning the strength and frequency of the injected light we find a transition from purely single-mode intensity oscillations to bursting in the intensity of the uninjected mode. We explain this phenomenon on the basis of a simple two-dimensional dynamical system, and show that the bursting in our experiment is organised by a cusp-pitchfork bifurcation of limit cycles.
In this paper, we explore the dynamics of a Hamiltonian system after a double van der Waals potential energy surface degenerates into a single well. The energy of the system is increased from the bottom of the potential well up to the dissociation energy, which occurs when the system becomes open. In particular, we study the bifurcations of the basic families of periodic orbits of this system as the energy increases using Lagrangian descriptors and Poincaré maps. We investigate the capability of Lagrangian descriptors to find periodic orbits of bifurcating families for the case of resonant, sa…
We study entanglement in two coupled quartic oscillators. It is shown that the entanglement, as measured by the von Neumann entropy, increases with the classical chaos parameter for generic chaotic eigenstates. We consider certain isolated periodic orbits whose bifurcation sequence affects a class of quantum eigenstates, called the channel localized states. For these states, the entanglement is a local minima in the vicinity of a pitchfork bifurcation but is a local maxima near a anti-pitchfork bifurcation. We place these results in the context of the close connections that may exist between e…
We consider a parametrically forced pendulum with a vertically oscillating suspension point. It is well known that, as the amplitude of the vertical oscillation is increased, its inverted state (corresponding to the vertically-up configuration) undergoes a cascade of ``resurrections,'' i.e., it becomes stabilized after its instability, destabilize again, and so forth ad infinitum. We make a detailed numerical investigation of the bifurcations associated with such resurrections of the inverted pendulum by varying the amplitude and frequency of the vertical oscillation. It is found that the inve…
A study is reported of the quantum scattering resonances of dissociating molecules using a semiclassical approach based on periodic-orbit theory. The dynamics takes place on a potential energy surface with an energy barrier separating two channels of dissociation. Above the barrier, the unstable symmetric-stretch periodic orbit may undergo a supercritical pitchfork bifurcation, leading to a classically chaotic regime. Signatures of the bifurcation appear in the spectrum of resonances, which have a shorter lifetime than classically expected. A method is proposed to evaluate semiclassically the …
In this paper we study the breakdown of normal hyperbolicity and its consequences for reaction dynamics; in particular, the dividing surface, the flux through the dividing surface (DS), and the gap time distribution. Our approach is to study these questions using simple, two degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian models where calculations for the different geometrical and dynamical quantities can be carried out exactly. For our examples, we show that resonances within the normally hyperbolic invariant manifold may, or may not, lead to a `loss of normal hyperbolicity'. Moreover, we show that the onset o…
We report a transition from homogeneous steady state to inhomogeneous steady state in coupled oscillators, both limit cycle and chaotic, under cyclic coupling and diffusive coupling as well when an asymmetry is introduced in terms of a negative parameter mismatch. Such a transition appears in limit cycle systems via pitchfork bifurcation as usual. Especially, when we focus on chaotic systems, the transition follows a transcritical bifurcation for cyclic coupling while it is a pitchfork bifurcation for the conventional diffusive coupling. We use the paradigmatic Van der Pol oscillator as the li…
The transition states and dividing surfaces used to find rate constants for bimolecular reactions are shown to undergo qualitative changes, known as Morse bifurcations, and to exist for a large range of energies, not just immediately above the critical energy for first connection between reactants and products. Specifically, we consider capture between two molecules and the associated transition states for the case of non-zero angular momentum and general attitudes. The capture between an atom and a diatom, and then a general molecule are presented, providing concrete examples of Morse bifurca…
A system of coupled two logistic maps, one periodic and the other chaotic, is studied. It is found that with the variation of the coupling strength, the system displays several curious features such as the appearance of quadrupling of period, occurrence of isolated period three attractor and the coexistence of the Hopf and pitchfork bifurcations. Possible applications and extensions are discussed.
We report on transcritical bifurcations of periodic orbits in non-integrable two-dimensional Hamiltonian systems. We discuss their existence criteria and some of their properties using a recent mathematical description of transcritical bifurcations in families of symplectic maps. We then present numerical examples of transcritical bifurcations in a class of generalized Hénon-Heiles Hamiltonians and illustrate their stabilities and unfoldings under various perturbations of the Hamiltonians. We demonstrate that for Hamiltonians containing straight-line librating orbits, the transcritical bifurca…
Bose-Einstein condensates are described in a mean-field approach by the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation and exhibit phenomena of nonlinear dynamics. The eigenstates can undergo bifurcations in such a way that two or more eigenvalues and the corresponding wave functions coalesce at critical values of external parameters. E.g. in condensates without long-range interactions a stable and an unstable state are created in a tangent bifurcation when the scattering length of the contact interaction is varied. At the critical point the coalescing states show the properties of an exceptional point. …
We investigate the isochronous bifurcations of the straight-line librating orbit in the Henon-Heiles and related potentials. With increasing scaled energy e, they form a cascade of pitchfork bifurcations that cumulate at the critical saddle-point energy e=1. The stable and unstable orbits created at these bifurcations appear in two sequences whose self-similar properties possess an analytical scaling behavior. Different from the standard Feigenbaum scenario in area preserving two-dimensional maps, here the scaling constants αand βcorresponding to the two spatial directions are identical and eq…
Two dynamical models that have been proposed to describe transitions between low and high confinement states (L-H transitions) in confined plasmas are analysed using singularity theory and stability theory. It is shown that the stationary-state bifurcation sets have qualitative properties identical to standard normal forms for the pitchfork and transcritical bifurcations. The analysis yields the codimension of the highest-order singularities, from which we find that the unperturbed systems are overdetermined bifurcation problems and derive appropriate universal unfoldings. Questions of mutual …
Recent investigations on the bifurcations in switching circuits have shown that many atypical bifurcations can occur in piecewise smooth maps which can not be classified among the generic cases like saddle-node, pitchfork or Hopf bifurcations occurring in smooth maps. In this paper we first present experimental results to establish the need for the development of a theoretical framework and classification of the bifurcations resulting from border collision. We then present a systematic analysis of such bifurcations by deriving a normal form --- the piecewise linear approximation in the neighbo…
We investigate cascades of isochronous pitchfork bifurcations of straight-line librating orbits in some two-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with mixed phase space. We show that the new bifurcated orbits, which are responsible for the onset of chaos, are given analytically by the periodic solutions of the Lamé equation as classified in 1940 by Ince. In Hamiltonians with C_${2v}$ symmetry, they occur alternatingly as Lamé functions of period 2K and 4K, respectively, where 4K is the period of the Jacobi elliptic function appearing in the Lamé equation. We also show that the two pairs of orbits cr…
We study bifurcations associated with stability of the lowest stationary point (SP) of a damped parametrically forced pendulum by varying $ω_0$ (the natural frequency of the pendulum) and $A$ (the amplitude of the external driving force). As $A$ is increased, the SP will restabilize after its instability, destabilize again, and so {\it ad infinitum} for any given $ω_0$. Its destabilizations (restabilizations) occur via alternating supercritical (subcritical) period-doubling bifurcations (PDB's) and pitchfork bifurcations, except the first destabilization at which a supercritical or subcritical…
