We formulate a conjecture on the behavior of the minimal free resolutions of sets of general points on arbitrary varieties embedded by complete linear series, in analogy with the well-known Minimal Resolution Conjecture for points in projective space. We then study in detail the case of curves. Our main result is that the Minimal Resolution Conjecture holds for general points on any canonical curve. On the other hand, for curves embedded with large degree, it always fails at a well-specified spot in the Betti diagram. The results are shown via techniques involving theta divisors associated to semistable vector bundles, difference varieties in Jacobians, and divisor class calculations in moduli spaces of curves with marked points.
We shall describe the divisor class group and the graded canonical module of the multi-section ring for a normal projective variety X and Weil divisors D_1,..., D_s on X under a mild condition. In the proof, we use the theory of Krull domain and the equivariant twisted inverse functor due to Hashimoto.
We investigate the structure of geometrically ruled surfaces whose anti-canonical class is big. As an application we show that the Picard group of a normal projective surface whose anti-canonical class is nef and big is a free abelian group of finite rank.
In this paper, we classify projective toric birational morphisms from Gorenstein toric 3-folds onto the 3-dimensional affine space with relatively ample anti-canonical divisors.
Some divisor class relations are proved and used to compute the Cartier divisor class of the virtual canonical bundle for genus 0 maps to a smooth target.
We study the Iitaka-Kodaira dimension of nef relative anti-canonical divisors. As a consequence, we prove that given a complex projective variety with klt singularities, if the anti-canonical divisor is nef, then the dimension of a general fibre of the maximal rationally connected fibration is at least the Iitaka-Kodaira dimension of the anti-canonical divisor.
Suppose that $X$ is a projective variety over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 0$. Further suppose that $L$ is an ample (or more generally in some sense positive) divisor. We study a natural linear system in $|K_X + L|$. We further generalize this to incorporate a boundary divisor $Δ$. We show that these subsystems behave like the global sections associated to multiplier ideals, $H^0(X, \mJ(X, Δ) \tensor L)$ in characteristic zero. In particular, we show that these systems are in many cases base-point-free. While the original proof utilized Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing and va…
We totally classify the projective toric varieties whose canonical divisors are divisible by their dimensions. In Appendix, we show that Reid's toric Mori theory implies Mabuchi's characterization of the projective space for toric varieties.
If the log canonical divisor on a projective variety with only Kawamata log terminal singularities is numerically equivalent to some semi-ample $\mathbf{Q}$-divisor, then it is semi-ample.
We study the structure of Frobenius splittings (and generalizations thereof) induced on compatible subvarieties $W \subseteq X$. In particular, if the compatible splitting comes from a compatible splitting of a divisor on some birational model $E \subseteq X' \to X$ (ie, this is a log canonical center), then we show that the divisor corresponding to the splitting on $W$ is bounded below by the divisorial part of the different as studied by Kawamata, Shokurov, Ambro and others. We also show that difference between the divisor associated to the splitting and the divisorial part of the different …
In this short note, we consider the conjecture that the log canonical divisor (resp. the anti-log canonical divisor) $K_X + Δ$ (resp. $-(K_X + Δ)$) on a pair $(X, Δ)$ consisting of a complex projective manifold $X$ and a reduced simply normal crossing divisor $Δ$ on $X$ is ample if it is numerically positive. More precisely, we prove the conjecture for $K_X + Δ$ with $Δ\neq 0$ in dimension 4 and for $-(K_X + Δ)$ with $Δ\neq 0$ in dimension 3 or 4.
T.Kishimoto raised the problem to classify all compactifications of contractible affine 3-folds into smooth Fano 3-folds with second Betti number two and classified such compactifications whose log canonical divisors are not nef. In this article, we show that there are 14 deformation equivalence classes of smooth Fano 3-folds which can admit structures of such compactifications whose log canonical divisors are trivial. We also construct an example of such compactifications with trivial log canonical divisors for each of all the 14 classes.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety. We study a relationship between the derived category of $X$ and that of a canonical divisor. As an application, we will study Fourier-Mukai transforms when $κ(X)=dim X-1$.
Inside the projectivized $k$-th Hodge bundle, we construct a collection of divisors obtained by imposing vanishing at a Brill-Noether special point. We compute the classes of the closures of such divisors in two ways, using incidence geometry and restrictions to various families, including pencils of curves on K3 surfaces and pencils of Du Val curves. We also show the extremality and rigidity of the closure of the incidence divisor consisting of smooth pointed curves together with a canonical or 2-canonical divisor passing through the marked point.
In this paper, we prove the abundance theorem for numerically trivial canonical divisors on strongly $F$-regular varieties, assuming that the geometric generic fibers of the Albanese morphisms are strongly $F$-regular.
We give a sufficient condition for the termination of flips. Then we discuss a semi-stable minimal model program for varieties with (numerically) trivial canonical divisor as an application. We also treat a slight refinement of dlt blow-ups.
The moduli space of canonical divisors (with prescribed zeros and poles) on nonsingular curves is not compact since the curve may degenerate. We define a proper moduli space of twisted canonical divisors in the moduli space of Deligne-Mumford stable pointed curves which includes the space of canonical divisors as an open subset. The theory leads to geometric/combinatorial constraints on the closures of the moduli spaces of canonical divisors. In case the differentials have at least one pole (the strictly meromorphic case), the moduli spaces of twisted canonical divisors on genus g curves are o…
Let $(X,Δ)$ be a 4-dimensional log variety which is proper over the field of complex numbers and with only divisorial log terminal singularities. The log canonical divisor $K_X+Δ$ is semi-ample, if it is nef (numerically effective) and the Iitaka dimension $κ(X,K_X+Δ)$ is strictly positive. For the proof, we use Fujino's abundance theorem for semi log canonical threefolds.
We propose a subconjecture that implies the semiampleness conjecture for quasi-numerically positive log canonical divisors and prove the semiampleness in some elementary cases.
In this paper, we investigate higher direct images of log canonical divisors. After we reformulate Kollár's torsion-free theorem, we treat the relationship between higher direct images of log canonical divisors and the canonical extensions of Hodge filtration of gradedly polarized variations of mixed Hodge structures. As a corollary, we obtain a logarithmic version of Fujita-Kawamata's semi-positivity theorem. By this semi-positivity theorem, we generalize Kawamata's positivity theorem and apply it to the study of a log canonical bundle formula. The final section is an appendix, which is a res…
We reformulate base point free theorems. Our formulation is flexible and has some important applications. One of the main purposes of this paper is to prove a generalization of the base point free theorem in Fukuda's paper: On numerically effective log canonical divisors.
In this paper, we prove that given a flat generically smooth morphism between smooth projective varieties with $F$-pure closed fibers, if the source space is Fano, weak Fano or a variety with the nef anti-canonical divisor, then so is the target space. We also show that relative anti-canonical divisors of generically smooth surjective nonconstant morphisms are not nef and big in arbitrary characteristic.
We extend a subadjunction formula of log canonical divisors as in [K3] to the case when the codimension of the minimal center is arbitrary by using the positivity of the Hodge bundles.
In this paper we study certain homogeneous spaces, which we call generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties. The main aim is to characterise the canonical divisor of generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties in terms of group representations. Affine Stiefel algebraic varieties and in particular $S^{n}$ are two special cases of the generalised affine Stiefel algebraic varieties.
In this paper we classify all the compactifications of affine homology $3$-cells into the blow-ups of the projective $3$-space along smooth curves such that the log canonical divisors are linearly trivial. As a result, we prove that each embedded affine $3$-fold is isomorphic to the affine $3$-space except one example.
We obtain a formula which relates the log canonical divisor of the ambient space with that of a subvariety of codimension 2 by using Knudsen's moduli space of pointed stable curves of genus 0.
In this paper, we use canonical bundle formulas to prove some generalizations of an old theorem of Kawamata on the semiampleness of nef and abundant log canonical divisors. In particular, we show that for klt pairs $(X,B)$ with $K_X+B$ effective, $L \in Pic (X)$ nef, nefness and abundance of $K_X+B+L$ implies semiampleness. This essentially generalizes Kawamata's theorem to the setting of generalized abundance.
Any ample Cartier divisor D on a projective variety X is strictly nef (i.e. D.C>0 for any effective curve C on X). In general, the converse statement does not hold. But this is conjectured to be true for anticanonical divisors. The present paper establishes this fact for normal complex projective threefolds with canonical singularities. This result extends several previously known special cases. The proof rests mainly on sophisticated techniques of three dimensional birational geometry developed in the last two decades.
We construct two divisors in the moduli space $\mathcal{A}_4 ^{(1,1,2,2)}$ and we check their invariance and non-invariance under the canonical involution introduced by C. Birkenhake and H. Lange.
Let $(X,Δ)$ be a projective log canonical pair such that $Δ\geq A$ where $A \geq 0$ is an ample $\mathbb{R}$-divisor. We prove that either $(X,Δ)$ has a good minimal model or a Mori fibre space. Moreover, if $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial, then any Log Minimal Model Program on $K_X+Δ$ with scaling terminates. As an application we prove that a log Fano type variety $X$ with $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial log canonical singularities is a Mori dream space.
Let $(X, Δ)$ be a four-dimensional log variety that is projective over the field of complex numbers. Assume that $(X, Δ)$ is not Kawamata log terminal (klt) but divisorial log terminal (dlt). First we introduce the notion of "log quasi-numerically positive", by relaxing that of "numerically positive". Next we prove that, if the log canonical divisor $K_X + Δ$ is log quasi-numerically positive on $(X, Δ)$ then it is semi-ample.
We study birational projective models of ${\mathcal M}_{2,2}$ obtained from the moduli space of curves with nonspecial divisors. We describe geometrically which singular curves appear in these models and show that one of them is obtained by blowing down the Weierstrass divisor in the moduli stack of ${\mathcal Z}$-stable curves $\overline{\mathcal M}_{2,2}({\mathcal Z})$ defined by Smyth. As a corollary, we prove projectivity of the coarse moduli space $\overline{M}_{2,2}({\mathcal Z})$.
We show that if a divisor centered over a point on a smooth surface computes a minimal log discrepancy, then the divisor also computes a log canonical threshold. To prove the result, we study the asymptotic log canonical threshold of the graded sequence of ideals associated to a divisor over a variety. We systematically study this invariant and also prove a result describing which divisors compute asymptotic log canonical thresholds.
Kollár gave a series of examples of rational surfaces of Picard number $1$ with ample canonical divisor having cyclic singularities. In this paper, we construct several series of new examples in a geometric way, i.e., by blowing up several times inside a configuration of curves on the projective plane and then by contracting chains of rational curves. One series of our examples have the same singularities as Kollár's examples.
In this paper we calculate genaral n-canonical divisors on smoothable semi-log-terminal singularities in dimension 2, in other words, the full sheaves associated to the double dual of the nth tensor power of the dualizing sheaves of these singularities. And as its application we give the inequality which bound the Gorenstein index by the local self intersection number of the n-canonical divisor of these singularities.
We prove that the moduli space of double covers ramified at two points $\mathcal{R}_{g,2}$ is uniruled for $3\leq g\leq 6$ and of general type for $g\geq 16$. Furthermore, we consider Prym-canonical divisorial strata in the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{C}^n\mathcal{R}}_g$ parametrizing $n$-pointed Prym curves, and we compute their classes in $\mathrm{Pic}_\mathbb{Q}(\overline{\mathcal{C}^n\mathcal{R}}_g)$.
We compute the class of the effective divisors on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$, which are set theoretically equal to the locus of moduli points $[C,p_1,\dots ,p_n]$ where $C$ lies on a quadric under the map given by the linear series $|K_C-p_1-\dots -p_n|$. Using this divisor class we show that the moduli spaces $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{16,8}$ and $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{17,8}$ are of general type. We also note that the divisor classes computed in the papers \cite{FV1} and \cite{FV2} can be used to show that $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{12,10}$ is of general type as well.
Let $X$ be a four-dimensional projective variety defined over the field of complex numbers with only terminal singularities. We prove that if the intersection number of the canonical divisor $K$ with every very general curve is positive ($K$ is almost numerically positive) then every very general proper subvariety of $X$ is of general type in the viewpoint of geometric Kodaira dimension. We note that the converse does not hold for simple abelian varieties.
In this paper, we initiate our investigation of log canonical models for the moduli space of curves with the boundary divisor $\a \d$ as we decrease $\a$ from 1 to 0. We prove that for the first critical value $\a = 9/11$, the log canonical model is isomorphic to the moduli space of pseudostable curves, which have nodes and cusps as singularities. We also show that $\a = 7/10$ is the next critical value, i.e., the log canonical model stays the same in the interval $(7/10, 9/11]$. In the appendix, we develop a theory of log canonical models of stacks that explains how these can be expressed in …
In this paper, we prove a generalization of Reznikov's theorem which says that the Chern-Simons classes and in particular the Deligne Chern classes (in degrees $>1$) are torsion, of a flat bundle on a smooth complex projective variety. We consider the case of a smooth quasi--projective variety with an irreducible smooth divisor at infinity. We define the Chern-Simons classes of Deligne's canonical extension of a flat vector bundle with unipotent monodromy at infinity, which lift the Deligne Chern classes and prove that these classes are torsion.
In the moduli space $\mathcal{R}_g$ of double étale covers of curves of a fixed genus $g$, the locus of covers of curves with a semicanonical pencil decomposes as the union of two divisors $\mathcal{T}^e_g$ and $\mathcal{T}^o_g$. Adapting arguments of Teixidor for the divisor of curves having a semicanonical pencil, we prove that both divisors are irreducible and compute their divisor classes in the Deligne-Mumford compactification $\overline{\mathcal{R}}_g$.
The canonical ring $S_D = \bigoplus_{d \geq 0} H^0(X, \lfloor dD \rfloor)$ of a divisor D on a curve X is a natural object of study; when D is a Q-divisor, it has connections to projective embeddings of stacky curves and rings of modular forms. We study the generators and relations of S_D for the simplest curve X = P^1. When D contains at most two points, we give a complete description of S_D; for general D, we give bounds on the generators and relations. We also show that the generators (for at most five points) and a Groebner basis of relations between them (for at most four points) depend o…
We use recent results by Bainbridge-Chen-Gendron-Grushevsky-Moeller on compactifications of strata of abelian differentials to give a comprehensive solution to the realizability problem for effective tropical canonical divisors in equicharacteristic zero. Given a pair $(Γ, D)$ consisting of a stable tropical curve $Γ$ and a divisor $D$ in the canonical linear system on $Γ$, we give a purely combinatorial condition to decide whether there is a smooth curve $X$ over a non-Archimedean field whose stable reduction has $Γ$ as its dual tropical curve together with a effective canonical divisor $K_X$…
We show that certain divisors of Brill-Noether and Gieseker-Petri type span extremal rays of the effective cone in the moduli space of stable genus one curves with $n$ ordered marked points. In particular, they are different from the infinitely many extremal rays found in \cite{ChenCoskun}.
For a minimal $3$-fold $X$ with $K_X\equiv 0$ and a nef and big Weil divisor $L$ on $X$, we investigate the birational geometry inspired by $L$. We prove that $|mL|$ and $|K_X+mL|$ give birational maps for all $m\geq 17$. The result remains true under weaker assumption that $L$ is big and has no stable base components.
The article proves the Infinitesimal Torelli theorem for surfaces subject to the following conditions: 1) the canonical bundle of a surface is ample and generated by its global sections, 2)the geometric genus $p_g \geq 4$, 3) the irregularity $q=0$ . The main novelty is a realization of the Kodaira-Spencer classes lying in the kernel of the cohomology cup-product controlling the derivative of the period map of weight 2 in the category of the coherent sheaves of a surface.
We prove the finiteness of log pluricanonical representations for projective log canonical pairs with semi-ample log canonical divisor. As a corollary, we obtain that the log canonical divisor of a projective semi log canonical pair is semi-ample if and only if so is the log canonical divisor of its normalization. We also treat many other applications.
Generalising toric geometry we study compact varieties admitting lower dimensional torus actions. In particular we describe divisors on them in terms of convex geometry and give a criterion for their ampleness. These results may be used to study Fano varieties with small torus actions. As a first result we classify log del Pezzo C*-surfaces of Picard number 1 and Gorenstein index less than 4. In further examples we show how classification might work in higher dimensions and we give explicit descriptions of some equivariant smoothings of Fano threefolds.
Given a graded sequence of ideals (a_m) on a smooth variety $X$ having finite log canonical threshold, suppose that for every m we have a divisor E_m over X that computes the log canonical threshold of a_m, and such that the log discrepancies of the divisors E_m are bounded. We show that in this case the set of divisors E_m is finite.
We prove that the canonical ring of a canonical variety in the sense of de Fernex and Hacon is finitely generated. We prove that canonical varieties are klt if and only if R(-K_X) is finitely generated. We introduce a notion of nefness for non-Q-Gorenstein varieties and study some of its properties. We then focus on these properties for non-Q-Gorenstein toric varieties.
We consider the operation of intersecting with a locally principal Cartier divisor (i.e., a Cartier divisor which is principal on some neighborhood of its support). We describe this operation explicitly on the level of cycles and rational equivalences and as a corollary obtain a formula for rational equivalence between intersections of two locally principal Cartier divisors. Such canonical rational equivalence applies quite naturally to the setting of algebraic stacks. We present two applications: (i) a simplification of the development of Fulton-MacPherson-style intersection theory on Deligne…
Smooth surfaces have finitely generated canonical rings and projective canonical models. For normal surfaces, however, the graded ring of multicanonical sections is possibly nonnoetherian, such that the corresponding homogeneous spectrum is noncompact. I construct a canonical compactification by adding finitely many non-Q-Gorenstein points at infinity, provided that each Weil divisor is numerically equivalent to a Q-Cartier divisor. Similar results hold for arbitrary Weil divisors instead of the canonical class.
