The Yamabe invariant is an invariant of a closed smooth manifold defined using conformal geometry and the scalar curvature. Recently, Petean showed that the Yamabe invariant is non-negative for all closed simply connected manifolds of dimension $\ge 5$. We extend this to show that Yamabe invariant is non-negative for all closed manifolds of dimension $\ge 5$ with fundamental group of odd order having all Sylow subgroups abelian. The main new geometric input is a way of studying the Yamabe invariant on Toda brackets. A similar method of proof shows that all closed manifolds of dimension $\ge 5$ with fundamental group of odd order having all Sylow subgroups elementary abelian, with non-spin universal cover, admit metrics of positive scalar curvature, once one restricts to the ``complement'' of manifolds whose homology classes are ``toral.'' The exceptional toral homology classes only exist in dimensions not exceeding the ``rank'' of the fundamental group, so this proves important cases of the Gromov-Lawson-Rosenberg Conjecture once the dimension is sufficiently large.
We prove that the Yamabe invariant of any simply connected smooth manifold of dimension n greater than four is non-negative. Equivalently that the infimum of the L^{n/2} norm of the scalar curvature, over the space of all Riemannian metrics on the manifold, is zero.
Suppose $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ are $3$-dimensional closed (compact without boundary) CR manifolds with positive CR Yamabe constant. In this note, we show that the connected sum of $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ also admits a CR structure with positive CR Yamabe constant.
Suppose $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ are two closed (compact with no boundary) spherical CR manifolds with positive CR Yamabe constant. In this note, we show that the connected sum of $M_{1}$ and $M_{2}$ also admits a spherical CR structure with positive CR Yamabe constant.
We propose a global invariant $σ_c$ for contact manifolds which admit a strictly pseudoconvex CR structure, analogous to the Yamabe invariant $σ$. We prove that this invariant is non-decreasing under handle attaching and under connected sum. We then give a lower bound on $σ_c$ in a particular case.
We compute the Yamabe invariant for a class of symplectic 4-manifolds of general type obtained by taking the rational blowdown of Kahler surfaces. In particular, for any point on the half-Noether line we exhibit a simply connected minimal symplectic manifold for which we compute the Yamabe invariant.
Let $M$ be a smooth closed $4k$-manifold whose Yamabe invariant $Y(M)$ is nonpositive. We show that $$Y(M\sharp l \Bbb HP^k\sharp m \bar{\Bbb HP^k})=Y(M),$$ where $l,m$ are nonnegative integers, and $\Bbb HP^k$ is the quaternionic projective space. When $k=4$, we also have $$Y(M\sharp l CaP^2\sharp m \bar{CaP^2})=Y(M),$$ where $CaP^2$ is the Cayley plane.
In this paper we produce families of Riemannian metrics with positive constant $σ_k$-curvature equal to $2^{-k} {n \choose k}$ by performing the connected sum of two given compact {\em non degenerate} $n$--dimensional solutions $(M_1,g_1)$ and $(M_2,g_2)$ of the (positive) $σ_k$-Yamabe problem, provided $2 \leq 2k < n$. The problem is equivalent to solve a second order fully nonlinear elliptic equation.
In this note we take some initial steps in the investigation of a fourth order analogue of the Yamabe problem in conformal geometry. The Paneitz constants and the Paneitz invariants considered are believed to be very helpful to understand the topology of the underlined manifolds. We calculate how those quantities change, analogous to how the Yamabe constants and the Yamabe invariants do, under the connected sum operations.
In his study of Ricci flow, Perelman introduced a smooth-manifold invariant called lambda-bar. We show here that, for completely elementary reasons, this invariant simply equals the Yamabe invariant, alias the sigma constant, whenever the latter is non-positive. On the other hand, the Perelman invariant just equals + infinity whenever the Yamabe invariant is positive.
We generalize Kobayashi's connected-sum inequality to the $λ$-Yamabe invariants. As an application, we calculate the $λ$-Yamabe invariants of $\#m_1\mathbb{RP}^n\# m_2(\mathbb{RP}^{n-1}\times S^1)\#lH^n\#kS_+^n$, for any $λ\in [0,1]$, $n\geq 3$, provided $k+l\geq 1$. As a corollary, we prove that $\mathbb{RP}^n$ minus finitely many disjoint $n$-balls have the same $λ$-Yamabe invariants as the hemi-sphere, which forms an interesting contrast with the famous Bray-Neves results on the Yamabe invariants of $\mathbb{RP}^3$.
We study the Yamabe invariant of manifolds obtained as connected sums along submanifolds of codimension greater than 2. In particular, given a compact smooth manifold M which does not admit metrics of positive scalar curvature, we prove that the Yamabe invariant of M is an upper bound for the Yamabe invariant of any manifold obtained by performing surgery in M on spheres of codimension greater than 2 .
We study the following $1$-Yamabe equation on a connected finite graph $$Δ_1u+g\mathrm{Sgn}(u)=h|u|^{α-1}\mathrm{Sgn}(u),$$ where $Δ_1$ is the discrete $1$-Laplacian, $α>1$ and $g, h>0$ are known. We show that the above $1$-Yamabe equation always has a nontrivial solution $u\geq0$, $u\neq0$.
For a compact connected manifold M of dimension n greater than 3 and with no metric of positive scalar curvature, we prove that the Yamabe invariant is unchanged under surgery on spheres of dimension different from 1, n-2 and n-1. We use this result to give new computations of the invariant in dimension four and display new examples of 4-manifolds which do not admit Einstein metrics.
Assume $α\geq p>1$. Consider the following $p$-th Yamabe equation on a connected finite graph $G$: $$Δ_pφ+hφ^{p-1}=λfφ^{α-1},$$ where $Δ_p$ is the discrete $p$-Laplacian, $h$ and $f>0$ are fixed real functions defined on all vertices. We show that the above equation always has a positive solution $φ$ for some constant $λ\in\mathds{R}$.
We show that solutions of the Yamabe equation on certain n-dimensional non-compact Riemannian manifolds which are bounded and L^p for p=2n/(n-2) are also L^2. This L^p-L^2-implication provides explicit constants in the surgery-monotonicity formula for the smooth Yamabe invariant in a previous article of the authors. As an application we see that the smooth Yamabe invariant of any 2-connected compact 7-dimensional manifold is at least 74.5. Similar conclusions follow in dimension 8 and in dimensions at least 11.
We establish the existence of infinitely many complete metrics with constant scalar curvature on prescribed conformal classes on certain noncompact product manifolds. These include products of closed manifolds with constant positive scalar curvature and simply-connected symmetric spaces of noncompact or Euclidean type; in particular, $\mathbb S^m \times\mathbb R^d$, $m\geq2$, $d\geq1$, and $\mathbb S^m\times\mathbb H^d$, $2\leq d<m$. As a consequence, we obtain infinitely many periodic solutions to the singular Yamabe problem on $\mathbb S^m\setminus\mathbb S^k$, for all $0\leq k<(m-2)/2$, the…
In this paper we study the problem of finding a conformal metric with the property that the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the eigenvalues of its Weyl-Schouten tensor is constant. A new conformal invariant involving maximal volumes is defined, and this invariant is then used in several cases to prove existence of a solution, and compactness of the space of solutions (provided the conformal class admits an admissible metric). In particular, the problem is completely solved in dimension four, and in dimension three if the manifold is not simply connected.

We consider a closed cohomogeneity one Riemannian manifold $(M^n,g) $ of dimension $n\geq 3$. If the Ricci curvature of $M$ is positive, we prove the existence of infinite nodal solutions for equations of the form $-Δ_g u + λu = λu^q$ with $λ>0$, $q>1$. In particular for a positive Einstein manifold which is of cohomogeneity one or fibers over a cohomogeniety one Einstein manifold we prove the existence of infinite nodal solutions for the Yamabe equation, with a prescribed number of connected components of its nodal domain.
We complete the classification (started by Bray and the second author) of all closed 3-manifolds with Yamabe invariant greater than that of $\RP^3$, by showing that such manifolds are either $S^3$ or finite connected sums $# m(S^2 \times S^1) # n(S^2 \tilde{\times} S^1)$ for $m + n \geq 1$, where $S^2 \tilde{\times} S^1$ is the nonorientable $S^2$-bundle over $S^1$. A key ingredient is Aubin's Lemma, which says that if the Yamabe constant is positive, then it is strictly less than the Yamabe constant of any of its non-trivial finite conformal coverings. This lemma, combined with inverse mean c…
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact connected spin manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$ whose Yamabe invariant is positive. We assume that $(M,g)$ is locally conformally flat or that $n \in \{3,4,5\}$. According to a positive mass theorem of Witten, the constant term in the asymptotic development of the Green's function of the conformal Laplacian is positive if $(M,g)$ is not conformally equivalent to the sphere. In the present article, we will give a proof for this fact which is considerably shorter than previous proofs. Our proof is a modification of Witten's argument, but no analysis on asymtotically flat …
An octonionic contact (OC) manifold is always spherical. We construct the OC Yamabe operator on an OC manifold and prove its transformation formula under conformal OC transformations. An OC manifold is scalar positive, negative or vanishing if and only if its OC Yamabe invariant is positive, negative or zero, respectively. On a scalar positive OC manifold, we can construct the Green function of the OC Yamabe operator, and apply it to construct a conformally invariant tensor. It becomes an OC metric if the OC positive mass conjecture is true. We also show the connected sum of two scalar positiv…
We consider several differential-topological invariants of compact 4-manifolds which directly arise from Riemannian variational problems. Using recent results of Bauer and Furuta, we compute these invariants in many cases that were previously intractable. In particular, we are now able to calculate the Yamabe invariant for certain connected sums of complex surfaces.
This paper computes the obstruction to the existence of equivariant extensions of basic gerbes over non-simply connected compact simple Lie groups. By modifying a (finite dimensional) construction of Gawȩdzki-Reis [J. Geom. Phys. 50(1):28-55, 2004], we exhibit basic equivariant bundle gerbes over non-simply connected compact simple Lie groups.
We consider the problem of constructing solutions to the Yamabe equation (i.e. conformal constant scalar curvature metrics) on the generalized connected sum M = (M_1) #_K (M_2) of two compact Riemannian manifolds (M_1,g_1) and (M_2,g_2) along a common (isometrically embedded) submanifold (K,g_K) of codimension greater or equal than 3.
A theorem on the existence of the unique minimal topologic handle decomposition of differentiable simply connected five-dimensional manifolds is proved. For a decomposition of this sort, the number of handles of each index is given.
The aim of this paper is to study compact 5--manifolds which admit fixed point free circle actions. The first result implies that the torsion in the second homology and the second Stiefel--Whitney class have to satisfy strong restrictions. We then show that for simply connected 5--manifolds these restrictions are necessary and sufficient.
This paper is devoted to the study of the constraint equations of the Lovelock gravity theories. In the case of an empty, compact, conformally flat, time-symmetric, and space-like manifold, we show that the Hamiltonian constraint equation becomes a generalisation of the $σ_k$-Yamabe problem. That is to say, the prescription of a linear combination of the $σ_k$-curvatures of the manifold. We search solutions in a conformal class for a compact manifold. Using the existing results on the $σ_k$-Yamabe problem, we describe some cases in which they can be extended to this new problem. This requires …
For most positive integer pairs $(a,b)$, the topological space $#a{\mathbb C \mathbb P}^2#b{\bar{\mathbb C \mathbb P^2}}$ is shown to admit infinitely many inequivalent smooth structures which dissolve upon performing a single connected sum with $S^2\times S^2$. This is then used to construct infinitely many non-equivalent smooth free actions of suitable finite groups on the connected sum $#a{\mathbb C \mathbb P}^2#b{\bar{\mathbb C \mathbb P^2}}$. We then investigate the behavior of the sign of the Yamabe invariant for the resulting finite covers, and observe that these constructions provide m…
We construct self-dual(SD) but not locally conformally flat(LCF) metrics on families of non-simply connected 4-manifolds with small signature. We construct various sequences with bounded or unbounded Betti numbers and Euler characteristic. These metrics have negative scalar curvature. As an application, this addresses the Remark 4.79 of Besse.
We compute the equivariant $K$-theory $K_G^*(G)$ for a simply connected Lie group $G$ (acting on itself by conjugation). We prove that $K_G^*(G)$ is isomorphic to the algebra of Grothendieck differentials on the representation ring. We also study a special example of a non-simply connected Lie group $G$, namely PSU(3), and compute the corresponding equivariant $K$-theory.
In this paper, we construct simply connected symplectic Calabi-Yau 6-manifolds by applying Gompf's symplectic fiber sum operation along $T^4$. Using our construction, we also produce symplectic non-Kähler Calabi-Yau 6-manifolds with fundamental group $\Z$. In this paper, we also produce the first examples of simply connected symplectic Calabi-Yau and non-Calabi-Yau 6-manifolds via coisotropic Luttinger surgery.
We determine the cut locus of arbitrary non-simply connected, compact and irreducible Riemannian symmetric space explicitly, and compute injectivity radius and diameter for every type of them.
We show that the Cheeger isoperimetric constant of a solvable simply connected Lie group $G$ with Lie algebra $\G$ is $h(G)=\max_{H\in\G,||H||=1} \tr(\ad (H))$.
It was shown by Mondino-Wei that any $\mathrm{RCD}^{*}(K,N)$ space $(X,d,\mathfrak{m})$ has a universal cover. We prove that for any point $x \in X$ and $R>0$, there exists $r<R$ such that any loop in $B_r(x)$ is contractible in $B_R(x)$; in particular, $X$ is semi-locally simply connected and the universal cover of $X$ is simply connected. This generalizes the author's earlier work that any Ricci limit space is semi-locally simply connected.
We explore relationship between the cut locus of an arbitrary simply connected and compact Riemannian symmetric space and the Cartan polyhedron of corresponding restricted root system, and compute injectivity radius and diameter for every type of irreducible ones.
We give a complete classification of left invariant generalized complex structures of type 1 on four dimensional simply connected Lie groups and we compute for each class its invariant generalized Dolbeault cohomology, its invariant generalized Bott-Chern cohomology and its invariant generalized Aeppli cohomology. We classify also left invariant generalized Kähler structures on four dimensional simply connected Lie groups.
We prove that any non-simply connected planar domain can be properly and minimally embedded in H^2 x R. The examples that we produce are vertical bi-graphs, and they are obtained from the conjugate surface of a Jenkins-Serrin graph.
We construct a compact simply-connected 7-dimensional manifold admitting a K-contact structure but not a Sasakian structure. We also study rational homotopy properties of such manifolds, proving in particular that a simply-connected 7-dimensional Sasakian manifold has vanishing cup-product on the second cohomology and that it is formal if and only if all its triple Massey products vanish.
We classify all compact simply connected biquotients of dimension 6 and 7. For each $6$-dimensional biquotient, all pairs of groups $(G,H)$ and homomorphisms $H\rightarrow G\times G$ giving rise to it are classified.
We classify all compact simply connected biquotients of dimension 4 and 5. In particular, all pairs of groups $(G,H)$ and embeddings $H\rightarrow G\times G$ giving rise to a particular biquotient are classified.
We consider the Neumann eigenvalue problem for Laplacian on a bounded multi-connected domain contained in simply connected space forms. Under certain symmetry assumptions on the domain, we prove Szegö-Weinberger type inequalities for the first $n$ positive Neumann eigenvalues.
Let $(X,p)$ be a Ricci limit space. We show that for any $ε> 0$ and $x \in X$, there exists $r< ε$, depending on $ε$ and $x$, so that any loop in $B_{r}(x)$ is contractible in $B_ε(x)$. In particular, $X$ is semi-locally simply connected. Then we show that the generalized Margulis lemma holds for Ricci limit spaces of $n$-manifolds.
We present an explicit construction of the basic bundle gerbes with connection over all connected compact simple Lie groups. These are geometric objects that appear naturally in the Lagrangian approach to the WZW conformal field theories. Our work extends the recent construction of E. Meinrenken \cite{Meinr} restricted to the case of simply connected groups.
We solve the problem posed by Boyer and Galicki about the existence of K-contact simply connected manifolds with no Sasakian structure. Although the result lies in the framework of metric contact geometry, our methods come from contact and symplectic geometry and are based on the method of fat bundles developed by Sternberg, Weinstein and Lerman.
We give a complete classification of left invariant para-Kähler structures on four-dimensional simply connected Lie groups up to an automorphism. As an application we discuss some curvatures properties of the canonical connection associated to these structures as flat, Ricci flat and existence of Ricci solitons.
We derive Verlinde's formula from the fixed point formula for loop groups proved in the companion paper "A fixed point formula for loop group actions", and extend it to compact, connected groups that are not necessarily simply-connected.
We prove that the conformal group of a closed, simply connected, real analytic Lorentzian manifold is compact. D'Ambra proved in 1988 that the isometry group of such a manifold is compact. Our result implies the Lorentzian Lichnerowicz Conjecture for real analytic Lorentzian manifolds with finite fundamental group. Third version includes corrections and clarifications, particularly in section 6.
