Let G be a complex connected reductive group. The representation ring R(G) admits a canonical filtration defined in terms of the lambda-structure. We compute the associated graded ring gr R(G) (over Q) and the Chern classes of a representation -- an easy exercise which we have been unable to find in the literature. As an application we give a simple definition of the characteristic classes of a principal bundle P --> B in gr K(B), and a simple way of computing the Chern classes of the associated vector bundles.
In this paper, I construct noncompact analogs of the Chern classes of equivariant vector bundles over complex reductive groups. For the tangent bundle, these Chern classes yield an adjunction formula for the Euler characteristic of complete intersections in reductive groups. In the case where the complete intersection is a curve, this formula gives an explicit answer for the Euler characteristic and the genus of the curve.
I will present an explicit formula for the intersection indices of the Chern classes of an arbitrary reductive group with hypersurfaces. This formula has the following applications. First, it allows to compute explicitly the Euler characteristic of complete intersections in reductive groups. Second, for any regular compactification of a reductive group, it computes the intersection indices of the Chern classes of the compactification with hypersurfaces. The formula is similar to the Brion--Kazarnovskii formula for the intersection indices of hypersurfaces in reductive groups. The proof uses an…
The $L^2$-cohomology of a locally symmetric variety is known to have the topological interpretation as the intersection homology of its Baily-Borel Satake compactification. In this article, we observe that even without the Hermitian hypothesis, the $L^p$-cohomology of an arithmetic quotient, for $p$ finite and sufficiently large, is isomorphic to the ordinary cohomology of its reductive Borel-Serre compactification. We use this to generalize a theorem of Mumford concerning homogeneous vector bundles, their invariant Chern forms and the canonical extensions of the bundles; here, though, we are …
Let G be a connected real reductive algebraic group, and let K be a maximal compact subgroup of G. We prove that the conjugation orbit space Hom(Z^{2d},K)/K is a strong deformation retract of the space Hom(Z^{2d},G)/G of equivalence classes of representations of Z^{2d} into G. This is proved by showing that the homotopy type of the moduli space of principal G-Higgs bundles of vanishing rational characteristic classes on a complex abelian variety of dimension d depends only on K.
Here we calculate the Chern classes of ${\bar {\mathcal M}}_{g,n}$, the moduli stack of stable n-pointed curves. In particular, we prove that such classes lie in the tautological ring.
The Chern-Fulton class is a generalization of Chern class to the realm of arbitrary embeddable schemes. While Chern-Fulton classes are sensitive to non-reduced scheme structure, they are not sensitive to possible singularities of the underlying support, thus at first glance are not interesting from a singularity theory viewpoint. However, we introduce a class of formal objects which we think of as `fractional schemes', or f-schemes for short, and then show that when one broadens the domain of Chern-Fulton classes to f-schemes one may indeed recover singularity invariants of varieties and schem…
In this paper, I construct Chern classes in the rigid cohomology of P. Berthelot. We start by constructing Chern classes for proper varieties. To prove all the properties we have to reinterpret the construction in a crystalline way. Then we can deal with open varieties using a compactification theorem.
We give a reduction of the conjecture that for terminal projective threefolds whose anticanonical divisors are nef, the second Chern classes are pseudo-effective. On the other hand, some effective non-vanishing results are obtained as applications of the pseudo-effectivity of the second Chern classes.
We prove that for smooth projective threefolds whose anticanonical divisors are nef, the second Chern classes are pseudo-effective under a weak assumption. As an application, the pseudo-effectivity of the second Chern classes implies that Kawamata's Effective Non-vanishing Conjecture holds for such threefolds.
Here we consider higher Chern classes of vector bundles of conformal blocks on $\overline{\operatorname{M}}_{0,n}$, giving explicit formulas for them, and extending various results that hold for first Chern classes to them. We use these classes to form a full dimensional subcone of the Pliant cone on $\overline{\operatorname{M}}_{0,n}$.
Let k be a field of characteristic 0. Let G be a reductive group over the ring of Laurent polynomials R=k[x_1^{\pm 1},...,x_n^{\pm 1}]. We prove that G has isotropic rank >=1 over R iff it has isotropic rank >=1 over the field of fractions k(x_1,...,x_n) of R, and if this is the case, then the natural map H^1_{et}(R,G)\to H^1_{\et}(k(x_1,...,x_n),G) has trivial kernel, and G is loop reductive, i.e. contains a maximal R-torus. In particular, we settle in positive the conjecture of V. Chernousov, P. Gille, and A. Pianzola that H^1_{Zar}(R,G)=* for such groups G. We also deduce that if G is a red…
We show how Chern classes of a Calabi Yau hypersurface in a toric Fano manifold can be expressed in terms of the holomorphic at a maximal degeneracy point period of its mirror. We also consider the relation between Chern classes and the periods of mirrors for complete intersections in Grassmanian Gr(2,5).
We study motivic Chern classes of cones. First we show examples of projective cones of smooth curves such that their various $K$-classes (sheaf theoretic, push-forward and motivic) are all different. Then we show connections between the torus equivariant motivic Chern class of a projective variety and of its affine cone, generalizing results on projective Thom polynomials.
We introduce a class extending the notion of Chern-Mather class to possibly nonreduced schemes, and use it to express the difference between Schwartz-MacPherson's Chern class and the class of the virtual tangent bundle of a singular hypersurface of a nonsingular variety. Applications include constraints on the possible singularities of a hypersurface and on contacts of nonsingular hypersurfaces, and multiplicity computations.
Paolo Aluffi showed that the Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson class of the complement of a free arrangement agrees with the total Chern class of the sheaf of logarithmic derivations along the arrangement. We describe the defect of equality of the two classes for locally tame arrangements with isolated non-free singular loci.
In this paper, we shall discuss possible theories of defining equivariant singular Bott-Chern classes and corresponding uniqueness property. By adding a natural axiomatic characterization to the usual ones of equivariant Bott-Chern secondary characteristic classes, we will see that the construction of Bismut's equivariant Bott-Chern singular currents provides a unique way to define a theory of equivariant singular Bott-Chern classes. This generalizes J. I. Burgos Gil and R. Liţcanu's discussion to the equivariant case. As a byproduct of this study, we shall prove a concentration formula which …
For a complex variety with a torus action we propose a new method of computing Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes. The method does not apply resolution of singularities. It is based on Localization Theorem in equivariant cohomology.
We construct a twist-closed enhancement of the category ${\mathcal D}^b_{\rm coh}(X)$, the bounded derived category of complexes of ${\mathcal O}_X$-modules with coherent cohomology, by means of the DG-category of $\bar\partial$-superconnections. Then we apply the techniques of $\bar\partial$-superconnections to define Chern classes and Bott-Chern classes of objects in the category, in particular, of coherent sheaves.
We study a K-theoretic characteristic class of singular varieties, namely the equivariant motivic Chern class. We prove that the motivic Chern class is characterized by an axiom system inspired by that of "K-theoretic stable envelopes," recently defined by Okounkov and studied in relation with quantum group actions on the K-theory algebra of moduli spaces. We also give explicit formulas for the equivariant motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells and matrix Schubert cells. Lastly, we calculate the equivariant motivic Chern class of the orbits of the A2 quiver representation, which yields formul…
In this article, we construct Chern classes in rational Deligne cohomology for coherent sheaves on a smooth complex compact manifold. We prove that these classes verify the functoriality property under pullbacks, the Whitney formula and the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem for projective morphisms between smooth complex compact manifolds.
We generalize the Chern class relation for the transversal intersection of two nonsingular varieties to a relation for possibly singular varieties, under a 'splayedness' assumption. The relation is shown to hold for both the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class and the Chern-Fulton class. The main tool is a formula for Segre classes of splayed subschemes. We also discuss the Chern class relation under the assumption that one of the varieties is a general very ample divisor.
The Chern class of the sheaf of logarithmic derivations along a simple normal crossing divisor equals the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of the complement of the divisor. We extend this equality to more general divisors, which are locally analytically isomorphic to free hyperplane arrangements.
We show that the Chern character of a variation of polarized Hodge structures of weight one with nilpotent residues at $\infty$ dies up to torsion in the Chow ring, except in codimension 0.
Given a parabolic vector bundle, we construct for it a projectivization and tautological line bundle. These are analogs of the projectivization and tautological line bundle for an usual vector bundle. Using these we give a construction of the parabolic Chern classes.
The purpose of this short note is to prove a formula for the Chern-Mather classes of a toric variety in terms of its orbits and the local Euler obstructions at general points of each orbit (Theorem 2). We use the general definition of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes (see [7]) and their special expression in case of a toric variety (see [2]). As a corollary, we obtain a formula by Matsui-Takeuchi [8, Corollary 1.6]. Alternatively, one could deduce the formula of Theorem 2 from the Matsui-Takeuchi formula, by using our general result [11, Theoreme 3] for the degree of the polar varieties i…
We derive a formula for the Chern classes of the bundles of conformal blocks on \bar{M}_{0,n} associated to simple finite dimensional Lie algebras and explore its consequences in more detail for sl_2 and in general for level 1. We also give a method for computing the first Chern class of such bundles on \bar{M}_{g,n} for g>0.
We obtain several new characterizations of splayedness for divisors: a Leibniz property for ideals of singularity subschemes, the vanishing of a `splayedness' module, and the requirements that certain natural morphisms of modules and sheaves of logarithmic derivations and logarithmic differentials be isomorphisms. We also consider the effect of splayedness on the Chern classes of sheaves of differential forms with logarithmic poles along splayed divisors, as well as on the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of the complements of these divisors. A postulated relation between these different noti…
We introduce a formal integral on the system of varieties mapping properly and birationally to a given one, with value in an associated Chow group. Applications include comparisons of Chern numbers of birational varieties, new birational invariants, `stringy' Chern classes, and a `celestial' zeta function specializing to the topological zeta function. In its simplest manifestation, the integral gives a new expression for Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of possibly singular varieties, placing them into a context in which a `change of variable' formula holds. The formalism has points of contac…
We show that under some assumptions on the monodromy group some combinations of higher Chern classes of flat vector bundles are torsion in the Chow group. Similar results hold for flat vector bundles that deform to such flat vector bundles (also in case of quasi-projective varieties). The results are motivated by Bloch's conjecture on Chern classes of flat vector bundles on smooth complex projective varities but in some cases they give a more precise information. We also study Higgs version of Bloch's conjecture and analogous problems in the positive characteristic case.
We compute the Bott-Chern classes of the metric Euler sequence describing the relative tangent bundle of the variety P(E) of hyperplans of a holomorphic hermitian vector bundle (E,h) on a complex manifold. We give applications to the construction of the arithmetic characteristic classes of an arithmetic vector bundle and to the computation of the height of P(E) with respect to the tautological quotient bundle O_E(1).
We prove that the Gromov--Witten theory (GWT) of a projective bundle can be determined by the Chern classes and the GWT of the base. It completely answers a question raised in a previous paper (arXiv:1607.00740). Its consequences include that the GWT of the blow-up of X at a smooth subvariety Z is uniquely determined by GWT of X, Z plus some topological data.
The crystalline Chern classes of the value of a locally free crystal vanish on a smooth variety defined over a perfect field. Out of this we conclude new cases of de Jong's conjecture relating the geometric étale fundamental group of a smooth projective variety defined over a perfect field and the triviality of its category of isocrystals. We also discuss the case of the Gauß-Manin convergent isocrystal.
We prove the Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality conjectured by Bayer, Macri and Toda for threefolds with semistable tangent bundles and vanishing Chern classes in any characteristic, which was originally proved by Bayer, Macri and Stellari in characteristic zero. This gives the existence of Bridgeland stability conditions on such threefolds. As applications, we obtain Reider type theorem and confirm Fujita's conjecture for such threefolds in any characteristic.
We consider a complex smooth projective variety equipped with an action of an algebraic torus with a finite number of fixed points. We compare the motivic Chern classes of Białynicki-Birula cells with the $K$-theoretic stable envelopes of cotangent bundle. We prove that under certain geometric assumptions satisfied e.g. by homogenous spaces these two notions coincide up to normalization.
We study the divisorial Zariski decomposition on varieties whose first Chern class is zero. We first prove that any exceptional divisor is contractible (up to a birational map that is an isomorphism in codimension one). We then characterize prime exceptional divisors on holomorphic symplectic manifolds.
We introduce a notion of `proChow group' of varieties, agreeing with the notion of Chow group for complete varieties and covariantly functorial with respect to arbitrary morphisms. We construct a natural transformation from the functor of constructible functions to the proChow functor, extending MacPherson's natural transformation. We illustrate the result by providing very short proofs of (a generalization of) two well-known facts on Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes: Kwiecinski's product formula, and the Ehlers-Barthel-Brasselet-Fieseler computation of Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of to…
Let $X$ be a nonsingular variety defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$, and $D$ be a free divisor with Jacobian ideal of linear type. We compute the Chern class of the sheaf of logarithmic derivations along $D$ and compare it with the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson class of the hypersurface complement. Our result establishes a conjecture by Aluffi raised in \cite{hyparr}.
We give an algorithmic description of the action of the Chern classes of tautological bundles on the cohomology of Hilbert schemes of points on surfaces within the framework of Nakajima's oscillator algebra. This leads to an identification of the cohomology ring of Hilbert schemes of the affine plane with a ring of differential operators on a Fock space. We end with the computation of the top Segre classes of tautological bundles associated to line bundles on Hilb^n up to n=7, and give a conjecture for the generating series.
Let $G$ be a connected affine algebraic group and $X$ a regular $G$-variety (in the sense of Bifet-De Concini-Procesi) with open orbit $G/H$ and boundary divisor $D$. We show the vanishing of the $G$-equivariant Chern classes of the bundle of differential forms on $X$ with logarithmic poles along $D$, in degrees larger than $\dim(X) - \rk(G) + \rk(H)$. Our motivation comes from Gieseker's degeneration method to prove the Newstead-Ramanan conjecture on the vanishing of the top Chern classes of the moduli space of stable vector bundles on a curve.
A formula for the first Chern class of the Verlinde bundle over the moduli space of smooth genus g curves is given. A finite-dimensional argument is presented in rank 2 using geometric symmetries obtained from strange duality, relative Serre duality, and Wirtinger duality together with the projective flatness of the Hitchin connection. A derivation using conformal-block methods is presented in higher rank. An expression for the first Chern class over the compact moduli space of curves is obtained.
We extend the classical formula of Porteous for blowing-up Chern classes to the case of blow-ups of possibly singular varieties along regularly embedded centers. The proof of this generalization is perhaps conceptually simpler than the standard argument for the nonsingular case, involving Riemann-Roch without denominators. The new approach relies on the explicit computation of an ideal, and a mild generalization of the well-known formula for the normal bundle of a proper transform. We also discuss alternative, very short proofs of the standard formula in some cases: an approach relying on the …
Motivic integration and MacPherson's transformation are combined in this paper to construct a theory of "stringy" Chern classes for singular varieties. These classes enjoy strong birational invariance properties, and their definition encodes data coming from resolution of singularities. The singularities allowed in the theory are those typical of the minimal model program; examples are given by quotients of manifolds by finite groups. For the latter an explicit formula is proven, assuming that the canonical line bundle of the manifold descends to the quotient. This gives an expression of the s…
In this note, we investigate the Chern classes of flat bundles in the arithmetic Deligne Cohomology, introduced by Green-Griffiths, Asakura-Saito. We show nontriviality of the Chern classes in some cases and the proof also indicates that generic flat bundles (in its moduli space) can be expected to have nontrivial classes, which is in contrast with some Gauss-Manin systems.
The moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties $A_g$ of genus g is defined over the integers and admits a minimal compactification $A_g^*$, also defined over the integers. The Hodge bundle over $A_g$ has its Chern classes in the Chow ring of $A_g$ with rational coefficients. We show that over the prime field $F_p$, these Chern classes naturally lift to $A_g^*$ and do so in the best possible way: despite the highly singular nature of $A_g^*$ they are represented by algebraic cycles on $A_g^*\otimes F_p$ which define elements in its bivariant Chow ring. This is in contrast to the si…
For any $t\in\mN$, we define a certain positive integer $\N_t$ and we conjecture: if $H$ is a Gauss-Manin bundle of a semi-stable fibration then the $t$-th Chern class of $H$ is kiled by $\N_t$. We prove various consequences of this conjecture.
Motivated by the Chern-Weil theory, we prove that for a given vector bundle $E$ on a smooth scheme $X$ over a field $k$ of any characteristic, the Chern classes of $E$ in the Hodge cohomology can be recovered from the Atiyah class. Although this problem was solved by Illusie in \cite{i}, we present another proof by means of derived algebraic geometry. Also, for a scheme $X$ over a field $k$ of characteristic $p$ with a vector bundle $E$ we construct elements $c^{cris}_n (E, α(E)) \in H_{dR}^{2n} (X) $ using an obstruction $α(E)$ to a lifting of $F^* E$ to a crystal modulo $p^2$ and prove that …
In this note we prove a conjecture of Kashiwara, which states that the Euler class of a coherent analytic sheaf F on a complex manifold X is the product of the Chern character of F with the Todd class of X. As a corollary, we obtain a functorial proof of the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem in Hodge cohomology for complex manifolds.
