For a class of scalar partial differential equations that incorporate convection, diffusion, and possibly dispersion in one space and one time dimension, the stability of traveling wave solutions is investigated. If the initial perturbation of the traveling wave profile decays at an algebraic rate, then the solution is shown to converge to a shifted wave profile at a corresponding temporal algebraic rate, and optimal intermediate results that combine temporal and spatial decay are obtained. The proofs are based on a general interpolation principle which says that algebraic decay results of this form always follow if exponential temporal decay holds for perturbation with exponential spatial decay and the wave profile is stable for general perturbations.
In this paper we introduce a precise definition of algebraic traveling wave solution for general n-th order partial differential equations. All examples of explicit traveling waves known by the authors fall in this category. Our main result proves that algebraic traveling waves exist if and only if an associated n- dimensional first order ordinary differential system has some invariant algebraic curve. As a paradigmatic application we prove that, for the celebrated Fisher- Kolmogorov equation, the only algebraic traveling waves solutions are the ones found in 1979 by Ablowitz and Zeppetella. T…
This paper is concerned with a time periodic competition-diffusion system \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} {u_t}={u_{xx}}+u(r_1(t)-a_1(t)u-b_1(t)v),\quad t>0,~x\in \mathbb R, {v_t}=d{v_{xx}}+v(r_2(t)-a_2(t)u-b_2(t)v),\quad t>0,~x\in \mathbb R, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $u(t,x)$ and $v(t,x)$ denote the densities of two competing species, $d>0$ is some constant, $r_i(t),a_i(t)$ and $b_i(t)$ are $T-$periodic continuous functions. Under suitable conditions, it has been confirmed by Bao and Wang [J. Differential Equations, 255 (2013), 2402-2435] that this system admits a periodic traveling f…
Global stability of traveling wavefronts in a periodic spatial-temporal environment in $n$-dimension ($n\ge 1$) is studied. The wavefront is proved to be exponentially stable in the form of $ O(e^{-μt})$ for some $μ>0$, when the wave speed is greater than the critical one, and algebraically stable in the form of $O(t^{-n/2})$ in the critical case. A new and easy to follow method is developed. These results are then extended to the case of time-periodic media. Finally, we illustrate how the stability result can be directly used to obtain the uniqueness of the wavefront with a given speed.
This paper is concerned with non-cooperative parabolic reaction--diffusion systems which share structural similarities with the scalar Fisher--KPP equation. In a previous paper, we established that these systems admit traveling wave solutions. It is then natural to investigate their asymptotic distributions. This is the main object of this paper. Non-cooperative KPP systems can model various phenomena where the following three mechanisms occur: local diffusion in space, linear cooperation and superlinear competition.
Topologically protected wave motion has attracted considerable interest due to its novel properties and potential applications in many different fields. In this work, we study edge modes and traveling edge states via the linear Dirac equations with so-called domain wall masses. The unidirectional edge state provides a heuristic approach to more general traveling edge states through the localized behavior along slowly varying edges. We show the leading asymptotic solutions of two typical edge states that follow the circular and curved edges with small curvature by analytic and quantitative argu…
We derive necessary conditions that traveling wave solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations must satisfy in the pipe, Couette, and channel flow geometries. Some conditions are exact and must hold for any traveling wave solution irrespective of the Reynolds number ($Re$). Other conditions are asymptotic in the limit $Re\to\infty$. The exact conditions are likely to be useful tools in the study of transitional structures. For the pipe flow geometry, we give computations up to $Re=100000$ showing the connection of our asymptotic conditions to critical layers that accompany vortex structures at hi…
We study traveling waves for a reaction-diffusion equation with nonlocal anisotropic diffusion and a linear combination of local and nonlocal monostable-type reactions. We describe relations between speeds and asymptotic of profiles of traveling waves, and prove the uniqueness of the profiles up to shifts.
This paper is concerned with the traveling wave solutions of delayed reaction-diffusion systems. By using Schauder's fixed point theorem, the existence of traveling wave solutions is reduced to the existence of generalized upper and lower solutions. Using the technique of contracting rectangles, the asymptotic behavior of traveling wave solutions for delayed diffusive systems is obtained. To illustrate our main results, the existence, nonexistence and asymptotic behavior of positive traveling wave solutions of diffusive Lotka-Volterra competition systems with distributed delays are established…
We consider a Fisher-KPP-type equation, where both diffusion and nonlinear part are nonlocal, with anisotropic probability kernels. Under minimal conditions on the coefficients, we prove existence, uniqueness, and uniform space-time boundedness of the positive solution. We investigate existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic behavior of monotone traveling waves for the equation. We also describe the existence and main properties of the front of propagation.
In this study, we analyze the behavior of monotone traveling waves of a one-dimensional porous medium equation modeling mechanical properties of living tissues. We are interested in the asymptotics where the pressure, which governs the diffusion process and limits the creation of new cells, becomes very stiff, and the porous medium equation degenerates towards a free boundary problem of Hele-Shaw type. This is the so-called incompressible limit. The solutions of the limit Hele-Shaw problem then couple "free dynamics" with zero pressure, and "incompressible dynamics" with positive pressure and …
Under natural spectral stability assumptions motivated by previous investigations of the associated spectral stability problem, we determine sharp $L^p$ estimates on the linearized solution operator about a multidimensional planar periodic wave of a system of conservation laws with viscosity, yielding linearized $L^1\cap L^p\to L^p$ stability for all $p \ge 2$ and dimensions $d \ge 1$ and nonlinear $L^1\cap H^s\to L^p\cap H^s$ stability and $L^2$-asymptotic behavior for $p\ge 2$ and $d\ge 3$. The behavior can in general be rather complicated, involving both convective (i.e., wave-like) and dif…
We establish the existence of small-amplitude uni- and bimodal steady periodic gravity waves with an affine vorticity distribution, using a bifurcation argument that differs slightly from earlier theory. The solutions describe waves with critical layers and an arbitrary number of crests and troughs in each minimal period. An important part of the analysis is a fairly complete description of the local geometry of the so-called kernel equation, and of the small-amplitude solutions. Finally, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of the bifurcating solutions.
A key feature of $(1+1)$-dimensional nonlinear wave equations is that they admit left or right traveling waves, under appropriate algebraic conditions on the nonlinearities. In this paper, we prove global stability of such traveling wave solutions for $(1+1)$-dimensional systems of nonlinear wave equations, given a certain asymptotic null condition and sufficient decay for the traveling wave. We first consider semilinear systems as a simpler model problem; we then proceed to treat more general quasilinear systems.
In this paper, we consider a constrained maximization problem related to planar vortex pairs with prescribed impulse. We prove existence, stability and asymptotic behavior for the maximizers, hence obtain a family of stable traveling vortex pairs approaching a pair of point vortices with equal magnitude and opposite signs. As a corollary, we get fine asymptotic estimates for Burton's vortex pairs with large impulse. For the non-concentrated case, we prove a form of stability for the Chaplygin-Lamb dipole.
We propose higher-order approximation formulae recovering the surface elevation from the pressure at the bed and the background shear flow for small-amplitude Stokes and solitary water waves. They offer improvements over the pressure transfer function and the hydrostatic approximation. The formulae compare reasonably well with asymptotic approximations of the exact relation between the pressure at the bed and the surface wave in the zero vorticity case, but they incorporate the effects of vorticity through solutions of the Rayleigh equation. Several examples are discussed.
In this paper, we study the existence and asymptotic properties of the traveling vortex pairs for the two-dimensional inviscid incompressible Boussinesq equations. We construct a family of traveling vorticity pairs, which constitutes the de-singularization of a pair of point vortices with equal intensity but opposite sign. Using the improved vorticity method, we also give limiting position of the supports of vorticities.

We study an integro-differential equation that describes the slow erosion of granular flow. The equation is a first order non-linear conservation law where the flux function includes an integral term. We show that there exist unique traveling wave solutions that connect profiles with equilibrium slope at $\pm\infty$. Such traveling waves take very different forms from those in standard conservation laws. Furthermore, we prove that the traveling wave profiles are locally stable, i.e., solutions with monotone initial data approaches the traveling waves asymptotically as $t\to+\infty$.
In this paper we consider a scalar parabolic equation on a star graph; the model is quite general but what we have in mind is the description of traffic flows at a crossroad. In particular, we do not necessarily require the continuity of the unknown function at the node of the graph and, moreover, the diffusivity can be degenerate. Our main result concerns a necessary and sufficient algebraic condition for the existence of traveling waves in the graph. We also study in great detail some examples corresponding to quadratic and logarithmic flux functions, for different diffusivities, to which ou…
We prove the existence of multi-soliton and kink-multi-soliton solutions of the Euler-Korteweg system in dimension one. Such solutions behaves asymptotically in time like several traveling waves far away from each other. A kink is a traveling wave with different limits at $\pm$$\infty$. The main assumption is the linear stability of the solitons, and we prove that this assumption is satisfied at least in the transonic limit. The proof relies on a classical approach based on energy estimates and a compactness argument.
We study the traveling wave solutions to a reaction diffusion system modeling the public goods game with altruistic behaviors. The existence of the waves is derived through monotone iteration of a pair of classical upper- and lower solutions. The waves are shown to be unique and strictly monotonic. A similar KPP wave like asymptotic behaviors are obtained by comparison principle and exponential dichotomy. The stability of the traveling waves with non-critical speed is investigate by spectral analysis in the weighted Banach spaces.
This note investigates the properties of the traveling waves solutions of the nonlocal Fisher equation. The existence of such solutions has been proved recently in \cite{BNPR} but their asymptotic behavior was still unclear. We use here a new numerical approximation of these traveling waves which shows that some traveling waves connect the two homogeneous steady states $0$ and $1$, which is a striking fact since $0$ is dynamically unstable and $1$ is unstable in the sense of Turing.
e study the minimal wave speed and the asymptotics of the traveling wave solutions of a competitive Lotka Volterra system. The existence of the traveling wave solutions is derived by monotone iteration. The asymptotic behaviors of the wave solutions are derived by comparison argument and the exponential dichotomy, which seems to be the key to understand the geometry and the stability of the wave solutions. Also the uniqueness and the monotonicity of the waves are investigated via a generalized sliding domain method.
We revisit the analysis by R.A. Gardner of convergence of spectra of periodic traveling waves in the homoclinic, or infinite-period limit, extending his results to the case of essential rather than point spectra of the limiting homoclinic wave. Notably, convergence to essential spectra is seen to be of algebraic rate with respect to period as compared to the exponential rate of convergence to point spectra. In the course of the analysis, we show not only convergence of spectrum but also convergence of an appropriate renormalization of the associated periodic Evans function to the Evans functio…
This paper studies the traveling wave solutions to a three species competition cooperation system. The existence of the traveling waves is investigated via monotone iteration method. The upper and lower solutions come from either the waves of KPP equation or those of certain Lotka Volterra system. We also derive the asymptotics and uniqueness of the wave solutions. The results are then applied to a Lotka Volterra system with spatially averaged and temporally delayed competition.
For Nicholson's blowflies equation, a kind of reaction-diffusion equations with time-delay, when the ratio of birth rate coefficient and death rate coefficient satisfies $\frac{p}δ>e$, the large time-delay $r>0$ usually causes the traveling waves to be oscillatory. In this paper, we are interested in the global stability of these oscillatory traveling waves, in particular, the challenging case of the critical traveling waves with oscillations. We prove that, the critical oscillatory traveling waves are globally stable with the algebraic convergence rate $t^{-1/2}$, and the non-critical traveli…
We prove the first bifurcation result of time quasi-periodic traveling waves solutions for space periodic water waves with vorticity. In particular we prove existence of small amplitude time quasi-periodic solutions of the gravity-capillary water waves equations with constant vorticity, for a bidimensional fluid over a flat bottom delimited by a space-periodic free interface. These quasi-periodic solutions exist for all the values of depth, gravity and vorticity, and restricting the surface tension to a Borel set of asymptotically full Lebesgue measure.
This paper focuses on traveling wave solutions for the so-called Rosenzweig-MacArthur model with spatial diffusion. The main results of this note are concerned with the existence and uniqueness of traveling wave solution as well as periodic wave train solution in the large wave speed asymptotic. Depending on the model parameters we more particularly study the existence and this uniqueness of a traveling wave connecting two equilibria or connecting an equilibrium point and a periodic wave train. We also discuss the existence and uniqueness of such a periodic wave train. Our analysis is based on…
This paper is concerned with the global stability of non-critical/critical traveling waves with oscillations for time-delayed nonlocal dispersion equations. We first theoretically prove that all traveling waves, especially the critical oscillatory traveling waves, are globally stable in a certain weighted space, where the convergence rates to the non-critical oscillatory traveling waves are time-exponential, and the convergence to the critical oscillatory traveling waves are time-algebraic. Both of the rates are optimal. The approach adopted is the weighted energy method with the fundamental s…
We prove the existence of small amplitude time quasi-periodic solutions of the pure gravity water waves equations with constant vorticity, for a bidimensional fluid over a flat bottom delimited by a space periodic free interface. Using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme we construct traveling nonlinear waves which pass through each other slightly deforming and retaining forever a quasiperiodic structure. These solutions exist for any fixed value of depth and gravity and restricting the vorticity parameter to a Borel set of asymptotically full Lebesgue measure.
Using a new method of monotone iteration of a pair of smooth lower- and upper-solutions, the traveling wave solutions of the classical Lotka-Volterra system are shown to exist for a family of wave speeds. Such constructed upper and lower solution pair enables us to derive the explicit value of the minimal (critical) wave speed as well as the asymptotic rates of the wave solutions at infinities. Furthermore, the traveling wave corresponding to each wave speed is unique modulo a translation of the origin. The stability of the traveling wave solutions with non-critical wave speed is also studied …
We consider several non-local models for traffic flow, including both microscopic ODE models and macroscopic PDE models. The ODE models describe the movement of individual cars, where each driver adjusts the speed according to the road condition over an interval in the front of the car. These models are known as the FtLs (Follow-the-Leaders) models. The corresponding PDE models, describing the evolution for the density of cars, are conservation laws with non-local flux functions. For both types of models, we study stationary traveling wave profiles and stationary discrete traveling wave profil…
We consider an evolving plane curve with two endpoints that can move freely on the $x$-axis with generating constant contact angles. We discuss the asymptotic behavior of global-in-time solutions when the evolution of this plane curve is governed by area-preserving curvature flow equation. The main result shows that any moving curve converges to a traveling wave if the moving curve starts from an embedded convex curve and remains bounded in global time.
Using spatial domain techniques developed by the authors and Myunghyun Oh in the context of parabolic conservation laws, we establish under a natural set of spectral stability conditions nonlinear asymptotic stability with decay at Gaussian rate of spatially periodic traveling-waves of systems of reaction diffusion equations. In the case that wave-speed is identically zero for all periodic solutions, we recover and slightly sharpen a well-known result of Schneider obtained by renormalization/Bloch transform techniques; by the same arguments, we are able to treat the open case of nonzero wave-s…
We examine a general model for the Fisher-KPP (FKPP) equation with nonlocal advection. The main interpretation of this model is as describing a diffusing and logistically growing population that is also influenced by intraspecific attraction or repulsion. For a particular choice of parameters, this specializes to the Keller-Segel-Fisher equation for chemotaxis. Our interest is in the effect of chemotaxis on the speed of traveling waves. We prove that there is a threshold such that, when interactions are weaker and more localized than this, chemotaxis, despite being non-trivial, does not influe…
Extending results of Oh and Zumbrun in dimensions $d\ge 3$, we establish nonlinear stability and asymptotic behavior of spatially-periodic traveling-wave solutions of viscous systems of conservation laws in critical dimensions $d=1,2$, under a natural set of spectral stability assumptions introduced by Schneider in the setting of reaction diffusion equations. The key new steps in the analysis beyond that in dimensions $d\ge 3$ are a refined Green function estimate separating off translation as the slowest decaying linear mode and a novel scheme for detecting cancellation at the level of the no…
We consider two scalar conservation laws with non-local flux functions, describing traffic flow on roads with rough conditions. In the first model, the velocity of the car depends on an averaged downstream density, while in the second model one considers an averaged downstream velocity. The road condition is piecewise constant with a jump at $x=0$. We study stationary traveling wave profiles cross $x=0$, for all possible cases. We show that, depending on the case, there could exit infinitely many profiles, a unique profile, or no profiles at all. Furthermore, some of the profiles are time asym…
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic stability of the initial-boundary value problem of a singular PDE-ODE hybrid chemotaxis system in the half space $\R_+=[0, \infty)$. We show that when the non-zero flux boundary condition at $x=0$ is prescribed and the initial data are suitably chosen, the solution of the initial-boundary value problem converges, as time tend to infinity, to a shifted traveling wavefront restricted in the half space $[0,\infty)$ where the wave profile and speed are uniquely selected by the boundary flux data. The results are proved by a Cole-Hopf type transformation …
In this paper, we study the stability and instability of plane wave solutions to semilinear systems of wave equations satisfying the null condition. We identify a condition which allows us to prove the global nonlinear asymptotic stability of the plane wave. The proof of global stability requires us to analyze the geometry of the interaction between the background plane wave and the perturbation. When this condition is not met, we are able to prove linear instability assuming an additional genericity condition. The linear instability is shown using a geometric optics ansatz.
The paper studies asymptotics of moving gap solitons in nonlinear periodic structures of finite contrast ("deep grating") within the one dimensional periodic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (PNLS). Periodic structures described by a finite band potential feature transversal crossings of band functions in the linear band structure and a periodic perturbation of the potential yields new small gaps. Novel gap solitons with O(1) velocity despite the deep grating are presented in these gaps. An approximation of gap solitons is given by slowly varying envelopes which satisfy a system of generalized C…
