We consider the imbedding inequality || f ||_{L^r(R^d)} <= S_{r,n,d} || f ||_{H^{n}(R^d)}; H^{n}(R^d) is the Sobolev space (or Bessel potential space) of L^2 type and (integer or fractional) order n. We write down upper bounds for the constants S_{r, n, d}, using an argument previously applied in the literature in particular cases. We prove that the upper bounds computed in this way are in fact the sharp constants if (r=2 or) n > d/2, r=infinity, and exhibit the maximising functions. Furthermore, using convenient trial functions, we derive lower bounds on S_{r,n,d} for n > d/2, 2 < r < infinity; in many cases these are close to the previous upper bounds, as illustrated by a number of examples, thus characterizing the sharp constants with little uncertainty.
We extend in this article the classical imbedding theorems for fractional Lebesgue-Sobolev's spaces into the so-called Grand Lebesgue spaces, with sharp constant evaluation.
The author establishes some geometric criteria for a Haj\lasz-Sobolev $\dot M^{s,\,p}_\ball$-extension (resp. $\dot M^{s,\,p}_\ball$-imbedding) domain of ${\mathbb R}^n$ with $n\ge2$, $s\in(0,\,1]$ and $p\in[n/s,\,\infty]$ (resp. $p\in(n/s,\,\infty]$). In particular, the author proves that a bounded finitely connected planar domain $\boz$ is a weak $α$-cigar domain with $α\in(0,\,1)$ if and only if $\dot F^s_{p,\,\infty}({\mathbb R}^2)|_\boz=\dot M^{s,\,p}_\ball(\boz)$ for some/all $s\in[α,\,1)$ and $p=(2-\az)/(s-α)$, where $\dot F^s_{p,\,\infty}({\mathbb R}^2)|_\boz$ denotes the restriction o…
The author establishes some geometric criteria for a domain of ${\mathbb R}^n$ with $n\ge2$ to support a $(pn/(n-ps),\,p)_s$-Hajłasz-Sobolev-Poincaré imbedding with $s\in(0,\,1]$ and $p\in(n/(n+s),\,n/s)$ or an $s$-Hajłasz-Trudinger imbedding with $s\in(0,\,1]$.
Cocompactness is a useful weaker counterpart of compactness in the study of imbeddings between function spaces. In this paper we show that subcritical continuous imbeddings of fractional Sobolev spaces and Besov spaces over \mathbb{R}^{N} are cocompact relative to lattice shifts. We use techniques of interpolation spaces to deduce our results from known cocompact imbeddings for classical Sobolev spaces ("vanishing" lemmas of Lieb and Lions). We give examples of applications of cocompactness to compactness of imbeddings of some radial subspaces and to existence of minimizers in some isoperimetr…
We extend in this article the classical Sobolev inequalities for the module of continuity for the functions belonging to the integer order Sobolev's space on the Sobolev-Bilateral Grand Lebesgue spaces. As a consequence, we deduce the fractional Orlicz-Sobolev imbedding theorems and investigate the rectangle module of continuity of non-Gaussian multiparameter random fields.
Using the concept of fractional derivatives of Riemann$-$Liouville on time scales, we first introduce right fractional Sobolev spaces and characterize them. Then, we prove the equivalence of some norms in the introduced spaces, and obtain their completeness, reflexivity, separability and some imbeddings. Finally, as an application, we propose a recent method to study the existence of weak solutions of fractional boundary value problems on time scales by using variational method and critical point theory, and by constructing an appropriate variational setting, we obtain two existence results of…
In this article, we fully characterize the measurable Gaussian processes $(U(x))_{x\in\mathcal{D}}$ whose sample paths lie in the Sobolev space of integer order $W^{m,p}(\mathcal{D}),\ m\in\mathbb{N}_0,\ 1 <p<+\infty$, where $\mathcal{D}$ is an arbitrary open set. The result is phrased in terms of a form of Sobolev regularity of the covariance function on the diagonal. This is then linked to the existence of suitable Mercer or otherwise nuclear decompositions of the integral operators associated to the covariance function and its cross-derivatives. In the Hilbert case $p=2$, additional links a…
In this article we investigate an action of some operators (not necessary to be linear or sublinear) in the so-called (Bilateral) Grand Lebesgue Spaces (GLS), in particular, double weight Fourier operators, maximal operators, imbedding operators etc. We intend to calculate an exact or at least weak exact values for correspondent imbedding constant. We obtain also interpolation theorems for GLS spaces. We construct several examples to show the exactness of offered estimations. In two last sections we introduce anisotropic Grand Lebesgue Spaces, obtain some estimates for Fourier two-weight inequa…
We first prove the equivalence of two definitions of Riemann-Liouville fractional integral on time scales, then by the concept of fractional derivative of Riemann-Liouville on time scales, we introduce fractional Sobolev spaces, characterize them, define weak fractional derivatives, and show that they coincide with the Riemann-Liouville ones on time scales. Next, we prove equivalence of some norms in the introduced spaces and derive their completeness, reflexivity, separability and some imbeddings. Finally, as an application, by constructing an appropriate variational setting, using the mounta…
We consider the Sobolev norms of the pointwise product of two functions, and estimate from above and below the constants appearing in two related inequalities.
We propose a general method for finding sharp constants in the imbeddings of the Hilbert Sobolev spaces of order m defined on a n-dimensional Riemann manifold into the space of bounded continuous functions, where m>n/2. The method is based on the analysis of the asymptotics with respect to the spectral parameter of the Green's function of the elliptic operator of order 2m, the domain of the square root of which defines the norm of the corresponding Sobolev space. The cases of the n-dimensional torus and n-dimensional sphere are treated in detail, as well as some manifolds with boundary. In cer…
The aim of this paper is to study the spectral gap and the logarithmic Sobolev constant for continuous spin systems. A simple but general result for estimating the spectral gap of finite dimensional systems is given by Theorem 1.1, in terms of the spectral gap for one-dimensional marginals. The study of the topic provides us a chance, and it is indeed another aim of the paper, to justify the power of the results obtained previously. The exact order in dimension one (Proposition 1.4), and then the precise leading order and the explicit positive regions of the spectral gap and the logarithmic So…
For n > d/2, the Sobolev (Bessel potential) space H^n(R^d, C) is known to be a Banach algebra with its standard norm || ||_n and the pointwise product; so, there is a best constant K_{n d} such that || f g ||_{n} <= K_{n d} || f ||_{n} || g ||_{n} for all f, g in this space. In this paper we derive upper and lower bounds for these constants, for any dimension d and any (possibly noninteger) n > d/2. Our analysis also includes the limit cases n -> (d/2) and n -> + Infinity, for which asymptotic formulas are presented. Both in these limit cases and for intermediate values of n, the lower bounds …
We generalize in this article the classical Sobolev's and Sobolev's trace inequalities on the Grand Lebesgue Spaces under monomial weight instead the classical Lebesgue or grand Lebesgue Spaces. We will distinguish the classical Sobolev's inequality and the so-called trace Sobolev's inequality.
We consider the inequalities of Gagliardo-Nirenberg and Sobolev in R^d, formulated in terms of the Laplacian Delta and of the fractional powers D^n := (-Delta)^(n/2) with real n >= 0; we review known facts and present novel results in this area. After illustrating the equivalence between these two inequalities and the relations between the corresponding sharp constants and maximizers, we focus the attention on the L^2 case where, for all sufficiently regular f : R^d -> C, the norm || D^j f||_{L^r} is bounded in terms of || f ||_{L^2} and || D^n f ||_{L^2} for 1/r = 1/2 - (theta n - j)/d, and s…
In this article we generalize the classical Sobolev's and Sobolev's trace inequalities on the Grand Lebesgue Spaces instead the classical Lebesgue Spaces. We will distinguish the classical Sobolev's inequality and the so-called trace Sobolev's inequality. We consider for simplicity only the case of whole space.
We obtain the sharp constant for the Hardy-Sobolev inequality involving the distance to the origin. This inequality is equivalent to a limiting Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality. In three dimensions, in certain cases the sharp constant coincides with the best Sobolev constant.
In this paper the dependence of the best constants in Sobolev and Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities on the precise form of the Sobolev space norm is investigated. The analysis is carried out on general graded Lie groups, thus including the cases of $\mathbb R^n$, Heisenberg, and more general stratified Lie groups. The Sobolev norms may be defined in terms of Rockland operators, i.e. the hypoelliptic homogeneous left-invariant differential operators on the group. The best constants are expressed in the variational form as well as in terms of the ground state solutions of the corresponding nonlin…
The best constants of two kinds of discrete Sobolev inequalities on the C60 fullerene buckyball are obtained. All the eigenvalues of discrete Laplacian $A$ corresponding to the buckyball are found. They are roots of algebraic equation at most degree $4$ with integer coefficients. Green matrix $G(a)=(A+a I)^{-1}\ (0<a<\infty)$ and the pseudo Green matrix $G_*=A^{\dagger}$ are obtained by using computer software Mathematica. Diagonal values of $G_*$ and $G(a)$ are identical and they are equal to the best constants of discrete Sobolev inequalities.
In this paper we estimate the Sobolev embedding constant on general noncompact Lie groups, for sub-Riemannian inhomogeneous Sobolev spaces endowed with a left invariant measure. The bound that we obtain, up to a constant depending only on the group and its sub-Riemannian structure, reduces to the best known bound for the classical inhomogeneous Sobolev embedding constant on $\mathbb{R}^d$. As an application, we prove local and global Moser--Trudinger inequalities.
The best constant of the Sobolev inequality in the whole space is attained by the Aubin-Talenti function; however, this does not happen in bounded domains because the break in dilation invariance. In this paper, we investigate a new scale invariant form of the Sobolev inequality in a ball and show that its best constant is attained by functions of the Aubin-Talenti type. Generalization to the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality in a ball is also discussed.
In this paper, we propose a method for estimating the Sobolev type embedding constant on a domain with minimally smooth boundary. We estimate the embedding constant by constructing an extension operator and computing its operator norm. We also present some examples of estimating the embedding constant for certain domains.
We present the best constant and the existence of extremal functions for an Improved Hardy-Sobolev inequality. We prove that, under a proper transformation, this inequality is equivalent to the Sobolev inequality in $\mathbb{R}^N$. We also discuss the connection of the related functional spaces and as a result we obtain some Caffarelli - Kohn - Nirenberg inequalities. Our starting point is the existence of a minimizer for the Bliss' inequality and the indirect dependence of the Hardy inequality at the origin.
The embedding constants of the Sobolev spaces $\mathring{W}^n_2[0;1] \hookrightarrow \mathring{W}^k_\infty[0; 1]$ ($0\leqslant k \leqslant n-1$) are studied. A relation of the embedding constants with the norms of the functionals $f\mapsto f^{(k)}(a)$ in the space $\mathring{W}^n_2[0;1]$ is given. An explicit form of the functions $g_{n;k}\in \mathring{W}^n_2[0;1]$ on which these functionals attain their norm is found. These functions are also to be extremal for the embedding constants. A relation of the embedding constants to the Legendre polynomials is put forward. A detailed study is made o…
Degenerate constants in degree inequalities for Sobolev circle maps: on some problems posed by Brezis

This paper is concerned with an explicit value of the embedding constant from $W^{1,q}(Ω)$ to $L^{p}(Ω)$ for a bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N~(N\in\mathbb{N})$, where $1\leq q\leq p\leq \infty$. To obtain this value, we previously proposed a formula for estimating the embedding constant on bounded and unbounded Lipschitz domains by estimating the norm of Stein's extension operator, in the article (K. Tanaka, K. Sekine, M. Mizuguchi, and S. Oishi, Estimation of Sobolev-type embedding constant on domains with minimally smooth boundary using extension operator, Journal of Inequalities and A…
We extend the classical Hardy-Sobolev-Poincare-Wirtinger inequalities from the ordinary Lebesgue-Riesz spaces into the Grand Lebesgue ones, with exact constants evaluation.
We give a comprehensive study of interpolation inequalities for periodic functions with zero mean, including the existence of and the asymptotic expansions for the extremals, best constants, various remainder terms, etc. Most attention is paid to the critical (logarithmic) Sobolev inequality in the two-dimensional case, although a number of results concerning the best constants in the algebraic case and different space dimensions are also obtained.
The paper is concerned with a sequence of constants which appear in several problems. These problems include the minimal eigenvalue of certain positive definite Toeplitz matrices, the minimal eigenvalue of some higher-order ordinary differential operators, the norm of the Green kernels of these operators, the best constant in a Wirtinger-Sobolev inequality, and the conditioning of a special least squares problem. The main result of the paper gives the asymptotics of this sequence.
We prove a trace Hardy type inequality with the best constant on the polyhedral convex cones which generalizes recent results of Alvino et al. and of Tzirakis on the upper half space. We also prove some trace Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya type inequalities which generalize the recent results of Filippas et al.. In applications, we derive some Hardy type inequalities and Hardy-Sobolev-Maz'ya type inequalities for fractional Laplacian. Finally, we prove the logarithmic Sobolev trace inequalities and logarithmic Hardy trace inequalities on the upper half spaces. The best constants in these inequalities ar…
We study functional inequalities for Markov chains on discrete spaces with entropic Ricci curvature bounded from below. Our main results are that when curvature is non-negative, but not necessarily positive, the spectral gap, the Cheeger isoperimetric constant and the modified logarithmic Sobolev constant of the chain can be bounded from below by a constant that only depends on the diameter of the space, with respect to a suitable metric. These estimates are discrete analogues of classical results of Riemannian geometry obtained by Li and Yau, Buser and Wang.
In this paper, we study the best constant of the following discrete Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality, \begin{equation} \sum_{i,j,i\neq j}\frac{f_{i}g_{j}}{\mid i-j\mid^{n-α}}\leq C_{r,s,α} |f|_{l^r} |g|_{l^s}, \end{equation}where $i,j\in \mathbb Z^n$, $r,s>1$, $0<α<n$, and $\frac 1r+\frac 1s+\frac {n-α}n\geq 2$. Indeed, we can prove that the best constant is attainable in the supercritical case $\frac 1r+\frac 1s+\frac {n-α}n> 2$.
We consider the family of non-local and non-convex functionals proposed and investigated by J. Bourgain, H. Brezis and H.-M. Nguyen in a series of papers of the last decade. It was known that this family of functionals Gamma-converges to a suitable multiple of the Sobolev norm or the total variation, depending on the summability exponent, but the exact constants and the structure of recovery families were still unknown, even in dimension one. We prove a Gamma-convergence result with explicit values of the constants in any space dimension. We also show the existence of recovery families consist…
This note presents a method based on Feynman-Kac semigroups for logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. It follows the recent work of Bonnefont and Joulin on intertwining relations for diffusion operators, formerly used for spectral gap inequalities, and related to perturbation techniques. In particular, it goes beyond the Bakry-{É}mery criterion and allows to investigate high-dimensional effects on the optimal logarithmic Sobolev constant. The method is illustrated on particular examples (namely Subbotin distributions and double-well potentials), for which explicit dimension-free bounds on the latte…
We prove a sharp quantitative version of the $p$-Sobolev inequality for any $1<p<n$, with a control on the strongest possible distance from the class of optimal functions. Surprisingly, the sharp exponent is constant for $p<2$, while it depends on $p$ for $p>2$.
We define Euler-Hilbert-Sobolev spaces and obtain embedding results on homogeneous groups using Euler operators, which are homogeneous differential operators of order zero. Sharp remainder terms of $L^{p}$ and weighted Sobolev type and Sobolev-Rellich inequalities on homogeneous groups are given. Most inequalities are obtained with best constants. As consequences, we obtain analogues of the generalised classical Sobolev type and Sobolev-Rellich inequalities. We also discuss applications of logarithmic Hardy inequalities to Sobolev-Lorentz-Zygmund spaces. The obtained results are new already in…
We investigate the validity, as well as the failure, of Sobolev-type inequalities on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds under suitable bounds on the sectional and the Ricci curvatures. We prove that if the sectional curvatures are bounded from above by a negative power of the distance from a fixed pole (times a negative constant), then all the $ L^p $ inequalities that interpolate between Poincaré and Sobolev hold for radial functions provided the power lies in the interval $ (-2,0) $. The Poincaré inequality was established by H.P. McKean under a constant negative bound from above on the sectional cur…
We obtain the optimal value of the constant K(n,s) in the Sobolev-Nirenberg-Gagliardo inequality $ \|\,u\,\|_{L^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^{n})} \leq K(n,s) \,\|\, u \,\|_{L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{n})}^{1 - n/(2s)} \|\, u \,\|_{\dot{H}^{s}(\mathbb{R}^{n})}^{n/(2s)} $ where $ s > n/2 $.
Inspired by the work of A. Bonami and S. Poornima that a non-constant function which is homogeneous of degree $0$ cannot be a Fourier multiplier on homogeneous Sobolev spaces, we establish analogous results for Fourier multipliers on the Heisenberg group $ \mathbb{H}^n $ and Weyl multipliers on $ \mathbb{C}^n $ acting on Sobolev Spaces.
We study the sharp constant in the Hardy inequality for fractional Sobolev spaces defined on open subsets of the Euclidean space. We first list some properties of such a constant, as well as of the associated variational problem. We then restrict the discussion to open convex sets and compute such a sharp constant, by constructing suitable supersolutions by means of the distance function. Such a method of proof works only for $s\,p\ge 1$ or for $Ω$ being a half-space. We exhibit a simple example suggesting that this method can not work for $s\,p<1$ and $Ω$ different from a half-space. The case…
In this paper, we got several sharp Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev-type inequalities on quaternionic Heisenberg groups (a general form due to Folland and Stein [FS74]), using the symmetrization-free method in a paper of Frank and Lieb [FL12], where they considered the analogues on classical Heisenberg group. First, we give the sharp Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequalities, both on quaternionic Heisenberg group and its equivalent on quaternionic sphere for exponent bigger than 4. The extremizer, as we guess, is almost uniquely constant function on sphere. Then their dual form, sharp conformally-invaria…
