In this paper we construct a faithful representation of the mapping class group of the genus two surface into a group of matrices over the complex numbers. Our starting point is the Lawrence-Krammer representation of the braid group B_n, which was shown to be faithful by Bigelow and Krammer. We obtain a faithful representation of the mapping class group of the n-punctured sphere by using the close relationship between this group and B_{n-1}. We then extend this to a faithful representation of the mapping class group of the genus two surface, using Birman and Hilden's result that this group is a Z_2 central extension of the mapping class group of the 6-punctured sphere. The resulting representation has dimension sixty-four and will be described explicitly. In closing we will remark on subgroups of mapping class groups which can be shown to be linear using similar techniques.
We prove that the first integral cohomology of pure mapping class groups of infinite type genus one surfaces is trivial. For genus zero surfaces we prove that not every homomorphism to $\mathbb{Z}$ factors through a sphere with finitely many punctures. In fact we get an uncountable family of such maps.
In this paper, we calculate the p-torsion of the Farrell cohomology for low genus pure mapping class groups with punctures, where p is an odd prime. Here, `low genus' means g=1,2,3; and `pure mapping class groups with punctures' means the mapping class groups with any number of punctures, where the punctures are not allowed to be permuted. These calculations use our previous results about the periodicity of pure mapping class groups with punctures, as well as other cohomological tools. The low genus cases are interesting because we know that the high genus cases can be reduced to the low genus…
We report on the computation of the integral homology of the mapping class group of genus g surfaces with one boundary curve and m punctures, when 2g + m is smaller than 6. In particular, it includes the genus 2 case with no or one puncture.
Finite presentations for the mapping class group M(F) are known for arbitrary orientable compact surface F. If F is non-orientable, then such presentations are known only when F has genus at most 3 and few boundary components. In this paper we obtain finite presentation for the mapping class group of the closed non-orientable surface of genus 4 from its action on the so called ordered complex of curves.
The aim of this paper is to introduce a group containing the mapping class groups of all genus zero surfaces. Roughly speaking, such a group is intended to be a discrete analogue of the diffeomorphism group of the circle. One defines indeed a {\it universal mapping class group of genus zero}, denoted $\B$. The latter is a nontrivial extension of the Thompson group $V$ (acting on the Cantor set) by an inductive limit of pure mapping class groups of all genus zero surfaces. We prove that $\B$ is a finitely presented group, and give an explicit presentation of it.
In this note we give presentations of all finite subgroups of the mapping class group of a closed surface of genus 2 by the Humphries generators up to conjugacy.
We exhibit a finitely generated group $\M$ whose rational homology is isomorphic to the rational stable homology of the mapping class group. It is defined as a mapping class group associated to a surface $\su$ of infinite genus, and contains all the pure mapping class groups of compact surfaces of genus $g$ with $n$ boundary components, for any $g\geq 0$ and $n>0$. We construct a representation of $\M$ into the restricted symplectic group ${\rm Sp_{res}}({\cal H}_r)$ of the real Hilbert space generated by the homology classes of non-separating circles on $\su$, which generalizes the classical …
We prove that the minimal nontrivial finite quotient group of the mapping class group M_g of a closed orientable surface of genus g is the symplectic group PSp(2g,Z_2), for g = 3 and 4 (this might remain true, however, for arbitrary genus g > 2). We discuss also some results for arbitrary genus g.
We prove that the hyperelliptic mapping class group of a nonorientable surface of genus $g\geq 4$ has a faithful linear representation of dimension $g^2-1$ over $\mathbb{R}$.
We show that finite index subgroups of the handlebody group are rigid in their ambient mapping class group: any injective map of a finite index subgroup of the genus $g$ handlebody group into the genus $g$ mapping class group is conjugation by a mapping class group element. On the other hand, we construct an injection of the genus $g$ handlebody group into a genus $h>g$ mapping class group which is not conjugate into a handlebody group.
We prove that for genus $g=3,4$, the extended mapping class group $\text{Mod}^{\pm}(S_g)$ can be generated by two elements of finite orders. But for $g=1$, $\text{Mod}^{\pm}(S_1)$ cannot be generated by two elements of finite orders.
We determine the first homology group with coefficients in $H_1(N;\mathbb{Z})$ for the mapping class group of a non-orientable surface $N$ of genus three with two boundary components.
The manifold which admits a genus-$2$ reducible Heegaard splitting is one of the $3$-sphere, $\mathbb{S}^2 \times \mathbb{S}^1$, lens spaces and their connected sums. For each of those manifolds except most lens spaces, the mapping class group of the genus-$2$ splitting was shown to be finitely presented. In this work, we study the remaining generic lens spaces, and show that the mapping class group of the genus-$2$ Heegaard splitting is finitely presented for any lens space by giving its explicit presentation. As an application, we show that the fundamental groups of the spaces of the genus-$…
We show that the mapping class group of any closed connected orientable surface of genus at least five is generated by only two commutators, and if the genus is three or four, by three commutators.
In this paper we prove that finite index subgroups of genus 3 mapping class and Torelli groups that contain the group generated by Dehn twists on bounding simple closed curves are not Kahler. These results are deduced from explicit presentations of the unipotent (aka, Malcev) completion of genus 3 Torelli groups and of the relative completions of genus 3 mapping class groups. The main results follow from the fact that these presentations are not quadratic. To complete the picture, we compute presentations of completed Torelli and mapping class in genera > 3; they are quadratic. We also show th…
A complex of incompressible surfaces in a handlebody is constructed so that it contains, as a subcomplex, the complex of curves of the boundary of the handlebody. For genus 2 handlebodies, the group of automorphisms of this complex is used to characterize the mapping class group of the handlebody. In particular, it is shown that all automorphisms of the complex of incompressible surfaces are geometric, that is, induced by a homeomorphism of the handlebody.
We show that the mapping class group of a closed oriented surface of genus at least three is generated by 3 elements of order 3 and by 4 elements of order 4. Note that the mapping class group cannot be generated by finitely many torsion elements of same order if genus is equal to one or two.
According to seminal work of Kontsevich, the unstable homology of the mapping class group of a surface can be computed via the homology of a certain lie algebra. In a recent paper, S. Morita analyzed the abelianization of this lie algebra, thereby constructing a series of candidates for unstable classes in the homology of the mapping class group. In the current paper, we show that these cycles are all nontrivial, representing degree 4k+1 homology classes in the homology of the mapping class group of a genus one surface with 4k+1 punctures.
Let Mod_{g,b} denote the mapping class group of a surface of genus g with b punctures. Feng Luo asked in a recent preprint if there is a universal upper bound, independent of genus, for the number of torsion elements needed to generate Mod_{g,b}. We answer Luo's question by proving that 3 torsion elements suffice to generate Mod_{g,0}. We also prove the more delicate result that there is an upper bound, independent of genus, not only for the number of torsion elements needed to generate Mod_{g,b} but also for the order of those elements. In particular, our main result is that 6 involutions (i.…
In this article, we construct a crystallization of the mapping torus of some (PL) homeomorphisms $f:M \to M$ for a certain class of PL-manifolds $M$. These yield upper bounds for gem-complexity and regular genus of a large class of PL-manifolds. The bound for the regular genus is sharp for the mapping torus of some (PL) homeomorphisms $f:M \to M$, where $M$ is $\mathbb{RP}^2$, $\mathbb{RP}^2\#\mathbb{RP}^2$, $\mathbb{S}^1\times \mathbb{S}^1$, $\mathbb{RP}^3$, $\mathbb{S}^{2} \times \mathbb{S}^1$, $\mathbb{S}^{\hspace{.2mm}2} \mbox{$\times \hspace{-2.6mm}_{-}$} \, \mathbb{S}^{\hspace{.1mm}1}$ o…
We prove a well known conjecture of Nikolai Ivanov which states that if $X$ is a surface of genus $\geq 3$ (with any number of punctures and boundary components), $\rm{Mod}(X)$ is the mapping class group of $X$, and $K < \rm{Mod}(X)$ is a finite-index subgroup, then $K$ does not virtually surject to $\mathbb{Z}$. As a corollary of this we get that $H_1(Z; \mathbb{Q}) = 0$ whenever $Z$ is a finite cover of $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$, the moduli space of complex algebraic curves of genus $g\geq 3$ with $n$ marked points.
Let S be an orientable surface of finite type and let Mod(S) be its mapping class group. We consider actions of Mod(S) by semisimple isometries on complete CAT(0) spaces. If the genus of S is at least 3, then in any such action all Dehn twists act as elliptic isometries. The action of Mod(S) on the completion of Teichmüller space with the Weil-Petersson metric shows that there are interesting actions of this type. Whenever the mapping class group of a closed orientable surface of genus g acts by semisimple isometries on a complete CAT(0) space of dimension less than g it must fix a point. The …
Let $Σ_{g,b}$ denote a closed oriented surface genus $g$ with $b$ punctures and let $Mod_{g,b}$ denote its mapping class group. Luo proved that if the genus is at least 3, the group $Mod_{g,b}$ is generated by involutions. He also asked if there exists a universal upper bound, independent of genus and the number of punctures, for the number of torsion elements/involutions needed to generate $Mod_{g,b}$. Brendle and Farb gave a partial answer in the case of closed surfaces and surfaces with one puncture, by describing a generating set consisting of 7 involutions. Our main result generalizes the…
Let $H_{g}$ be a 3-dimensional handlebody of genus $g$. We determine the twisted first homology group of the mapping class group of $H_{g}$ with coefficients in the first integral homology group of the boundary surface $\partial H_{g}$ for $g\geq 2$.
We construct the first known examples of nontrivial, normal, all pseudo-Anosov subgroups of mapping class groups of surfaces. Specifically, we construct such subgroups for the closed genus two surface and for the sphere with five or more punctures. Using the branched covering of the genus two surface over the sphere and results of Birman and Hilden, we prove that a reducible mapping class of the genus two surface projects to a reducible mapping class on the sphere with six punctures. The construction introduces "Brunnian" mapping classes of the sphere, which are analogous to Brunnian links.
Every surface bundle with genus $g$ fiber has a canonical Heegaard splitting of genus $2g+1$. We classify the mapping class groups of such Heegaard splittings in the case when the surface bundle has a sufficiently complicated monodromy map.
Let $S_g$ be the closed oriented surface of genus g and let $\text{Mod}^{\pm}(S_g)$ be the extended mapping class group of $S_g$. When the genus is at least 5, we prove that $\text{Mod}^{\pm}(S_g)$ can be generated by two torsion elements. One of these generators is an order 2 element, and the other one is an order 4g+2 element.
Suppose that $X$ and $Y$ are surfaces of finite topological type, where $X$ has genus $g\geq 6$ and $Y$ has genus at most $2g-1$; in addition, suppose that $Y$ is not closed if it has genus $2g-1$. Our main result asserts that every non-trivial homomorphism $\Map(X) \to \Map(Y)$ is induced by an {\em embedding}, i.e. a combination of forgetting punctures, deleting boundary components and subsurface embeddings. In particular, if $X$ has no boundary then every non-trivial endomorphism $\Map(X)\to\Map(X)$ is in fact an isomorphism. As an application of our main theorem we obtain that, under the s…
Let $M$ be an orientable, irreducible $3$-manifold admitting a weakly reducible genus three Heegaard splitting as a minimal genus Heegaard splitting. In this article, we prove that if $[f]$, $[g]\in Mod(M)$ give the same correspondence between two isotopy classes of generalized Heegaard splittings consisting of two Heegaard splittings of genus two, say $[\mathbf{H}]\to[\mathbf{H}']$, then there exists a representative $h$ of the difference $[h]=[g]\cdot[f]^{-1}$ such that (i) $h$ preserves a suitably chosen embedding of the Heegaard surface $F'$ obtained by amalgamation from $\mathbf{H}'$ whic…
Recently, John Franks and Michael Handel proved that, for $g\geq 3$ and $n\leq 2g-4$, every homomorphism from the mapping class group of an orientable surface of genus $g$ to $\GL (n,\C)$ is trivial. We extend this result to $n\leq 2g-1$, also covering the case $g=2$. As an application, we prove the corresponding result for nonorientable surfaces. Another application is on the triviality of homomorphisms from the mapping class group of a closed surface of genus $g$ to $\Aut (F_n)$ or to $\Out (F_n)$ for $n\leq 2g-1$.
We describe sufficient conditions which guarantee that a finite set of mapping classes generate a right-angled Artin group quasi-isometrically embedded in the mapping class group. Moreover, under these conditions, the orbit map to Teichmuller space is a quasi-isometric embedding for both of the standard metrics. As a consequence, we produce infinitely many genus h surfaces (for any h at least 2) in the moduli space of genus g surfaces (for any g at least 3) for which the universal covers are quasi-isometrically embedded in the Teichmuller space.
We first construct a genus zero positive allowable Lefschetz fibration over the disk (a genus zero PALF for short) on the Akbulut cork and describe the monodromy as a positive factorization in the mapping class group of a surface of genus zero with five boundary components. We then construct genus zero PALFs on infinitely many exotic pairs of compact Stein surfaces such that one is a cork twist of the other along an Akbulut cork. The difference of smooth structures on each of exotic pairs of compact Stein surface is interpreted as the difference of the corresponding positive factorizations in …
We construct integral bases for the SO(3)-TQFT-modules of surfaces in genus one and two at roots of unity of prime order and show that the corresponding mapping class group representations preserve a unimodular Hermitian form over a ring of algebraic integers. For higher genus surfaces the Hermitian form sometimes must be non-unimodular. In one such case, genus 3 and p=5, we still give an explicit basis.
This article is about the graph genus of certain well studied graphs in surface theory: the curve, pants and flip graphs. We study both the genus of these graphs and the genus of their quotients by the mapping class group. The full graphs, except for in some low complexity cases, all have infinite genus. The curve graph once quotiented by the mapping class group has the genus of a complete graph so its genus is well known by a theorem of Ringel and Youngs. For the other two graphs we are able to identify the precise growth rate of the graph genus in terms of the genus of the underlying surface…
The mapping class group of a Heegaard splitting is the group of connected components in the set of automorphisms of the ambient manifold that map the Heegaard surface onto itself. For the genus three Heegaard splitting of the 3-torus, we find an eight element generating set for this group. Six of these generators induce generating elements of the mapping class group of the 3-torus and the remaining two are isotopy trivial in the 3-torus.
We calculate the virtually-cyclic dimension of the mapping class group of a sphere with at most six punctures. As an immediate consequence, we obtain the virtually-cyclic dimension of the mapping class group of the twice-holed torus and of the closed genus-two surface.
Our main result is that the image of the quantum representation of a central extension of the mapping class group of the genus $g\geq 3$ closed orientable surface at a prime $p\geq 5$ is a Zariski dense discrete subgroup of some higher rank algebraic semi-simple Lie group $\mathbb G_p$ defined over $\Q$. As an application we find that, for any prime $p\geq 5$ a central extension of the genus $g$ mapping class group surjects onto the finite groups $\mathbb G_p(\Z/q\Z)$, for all but finitely many primes $q$. This method provides infinitely many finite quotients of a given mapping class group out…
We prove that in genus bigger than $2$, the mapping class group action on $\mathrm{Aff}(\mathbb{C})$-characters is ergodic. This implies that almost every representation $π_1 S \longrightarrow \mathrm{Aff}(\mathbb{C})$ is the holonomy of a branched affine structure on $S$, where $S$ is a closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 2$.
We define a generalization of Coxeter graphs and an associated Coxeter system and Coxeter mapping class. These can be used to construct periodic Coxeter mapping classes on surfaces with arbitrarily large genus, preserving lots of symmetries. The periodic mapping classes can in turn be used to construct sequences of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes with bounded normalized dilatation and arbitrarily high genus. We show that the smallest known accumulation point of normalized dilatations can be realized by such a sequence.
Let $S$ be an orientable, connected surface with infinitely-generated fundamental group. The main theorem states that if the genus of $S$ is finite and at least 4, then the isomorphism type of the pure mapping class group associated to $S$, denoted $\mathrm{PMap}(S)$, detects the homeomorphism type of $S$. As a corollary, every automorphism of $\mathrm{PMap}(S)$ is induced by a homeomorphism, which extends a theorem of Ivanov from the finite-type setting. In the process of proving these results, we show that $\mathrm{PMap}(S)$ is residually finite if and only if $S$ has finite genus, demonstra…
We obtain a finite generating set for the level 2 twist subgroup of the mapping class group of a closed non-orientable surface. The generating set consists of crosscap pushing maps along non-separating two-sided simple loops and squares of Dehn twists along non-separating two-sided simple closed curves. We also prove that the level 2 twist subgroup is normally generated in the mapping class group by a crosscap pushing map along a non-separating two-sided simple loop for genus $g\geq 5$ and $g=3$. As an application, we calculate the first homology group of the level 2 twist subgroup for genus $…
Given an oriented surface of positive genus with finitely many punctures, we classify the finite orbits of the mapping class group action on the moduli space of semisimple complex special linear two dimensional representations of the fundamental group of the surface. For surfaces of genus at least two, such orbits correspond to homomorphisms with finite image. For genus one, they correspond to the finite or special dihedral representations. We also obtain an analogous result for bounded orbits in the moduli space.
This paper describes a family of pseudo-Anosov braids with small dilatation. The smallest dilatations occurring for braids with 3, 4 and 5 strands appear in this family. A pseudo-Anosov braid with 2g+1 strands determines a hyperelliptic mapping class with the same dilatation on a genus-g surface. Penner showed that logarithms of least dilatations of pseudo-Anosov maps on a genus-g surface grow asymptotically with the genus like 1/g, and gave explicit examples of mapping classes with dilatations bounded above by log 11/g. Bauer later improved this bound to log 6/g. The braids in this paper give…
Let Mod_g be the mapping class group of a genus g >= 2 surface. The group Mod_g has virtual cohomological dimension 4g-5. In this note we use a theorem of Broaddus and the combinatorics of chord diagrams to prove that H^{4g-5}(Mod_g; Q) = 0.
