The center of some braid groups and the Farrell cohomology of certain pure mapping class groups

In this paper we first show that many braid groups of low genus surfaces have their centers as direct factors. We then give a description of centralizers and normalizers of prime order elements in pure mapping class groups of surfaces with spherical quotients using automorphism groups of fundamental groups of the quotient surfaces. As an application, we use these to show that the $p$-primary part of the Farrell cohomology groups of certain mapping class groups are elementary abelian groups. At the end we compute the $p$-primary part of the Farrell cohomology of a few pure mapping class groups.

Homology of the mapping class group for surfaces of genus 2 with boundary

We report on the computation of the integral homology of the mapping class group of genus g surfaces with one boundary curve and m punctures, when 2g + m is smaller than 6. In particular, it includes the genus 2 case with no or one puncture.

On the virtually-cyclic dimension of mapping class groups of punctured spheres

We calculate the virtually-cyclic dimension of the mapping class group of a sphere with at most six punctures. As an immediate consequence, we obtain the virtually-cyclic dimension of the mapping class group of the twice-holed torus and of the closed genus-two surface.

The high-dimensional cohomology of the moduli space of curves with level structures II: punctures and boundary

We give two proofs that appropriately defined congruence subgroups of the mapping class group of a surface with punctures/boundary have enormous amounts of rational cohomology in their virtual cohomological dimension. In particular we give bounds that are super-exponential in each of three variables: number of punctures, number of boundary components, and genus, generalizing work of Fullarton-Putman. The mapping class group of a genus two surface is linear

In this paper we construct a faithful representation of the mapping class group of the genus two surface into a group of matrices over the complex numbers. Our starting point is the Lawrence-Krammer representation of the braid group B_n, which was shown to be faithful by Bigelow and Krammer. We obtain a faithful representation of the mapping class group of the n-punctured sphere by using the close relationship between this group and B_{n-1}.
