W. Arveson has described a cocycle conjugacy class $U(α)$ of $E_0$-semigroup $α$ on B(H) which is a factor of type $\rm I$. Under some conditions on $α$, there is a $E_0$-semigroup $β\in U(α)$ being a flow of shifts in the sence of R.T. Powers. We study quasifree endomorphisms semigroups $α$ on the hyperfinite factor $M=π(A(K))''$ generated by the representations $π$ of the algebra of canonical anticommutation relations A(K) over a separable Hilbert space K. The type of M can be $\rm I$, $\rm II$ or $\rm III$ depending on $π$. The cocycle conjugacy class $U(α)$ is described in the terms of initial isometrical semigroups in K and an analogue of the Arveson result for the hyperfinite factors M of the type $\rm II_1$ and $\rm III_λ, 0<λ<1,$ is introduced.
The theory of quasifree quantum stochastic calculus for infinite-dimensional noise is developed within the framework of Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic calculus. The question of uniqueness for the covariance amplitude with respect to which a given unitary quantum stochastic cocycle is quasifree is addressed, and related to the minimality of the corresponding stochastic dilation. The theory is applied to the identification of a wide class of quantum random walks whose limit processes are driven by quasifree noises.
We show that every binary shift on the hyperfinite $II_1$ factor $R$ is cocycle conjugate to at least countably many non-conjugate binary shifts. This holds in particular for binary shifts of infinite commutant index.
We show that Bogoljubov actions of $\mathbb{R}$ on the free group factor $L(\mathbb{F}_{\infty})$ associated to sums of infinite multiplicity trivial and certain mixing representations are cocycle conjugate if and only if the underlying representations are conjugate.
The group of automorphisms of the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_{2}$ is a Polish group with respect to the topology of pointwise convergence in norm. Our main result is that the relations of conjugacy and cocycle conjugacy of automorphisms of $\mathcal{O}_{2}$ are complete analytic sets and, in particular, not Borel. Moreover, we show that from the point of view of Borel complexity theory, classifying automorphisms of $\mathcal{O}_{2}$ up to conjugacy or cocycle conjugacy is strictly more difficult than classifying up to isomorphism any class of countable structures with Borel isomorphism relatio…
We provide the rigorous foundations for a categorical approach to the classification of C*-dynamics up to cocycle conjugacy. Given a locally compact group $G$, we consider a category of (twisted) $G$-C*-algebras, where morphisms between two objects are allowed to be equivariant maps or exterior equivalences, which leads to the concept of so-called cocycle morphisms. An isomorphism in this category is precisely a cocycle conjugacy in the known sense. We show that this category allows sequential inductive limits, and that some known functors on the usual category of $G$-C*-algebras extend. After…
We characterise simplicity of twisted C*-algebras of row-finite k-graphs with no sources. We show that each 2-cocycle on a cofinal k-graph determines a canonical second-cohomology class for the periodicity group of the graph. The groupoid of the k-graph then acts on the cartesian product of the infinite-path space of the graph with the dual group of the centre of any bicharacter representing this second-cohomology class. The twisted k-graph algebra is simple if and only if this action is minimal. We apply this result to characterise simplicity for many twisted crossed products of k-graph algeb…
The gauge group is computed explicitly for a family of E_0-semigroups of type II_0 arising from the boundary weight double construction introduced earlier by Jankowski. This family contains many E_0-semigroups which are not cocycle cocycle conjugate to any examples whose gauge groups have been computed earlier. Further results are obtained regarding the classification up to cocycle conjugacy and up to conjugacy for boundary weight doubles $(ϕ, ν)$ in two separate cases: first in the case when $ϕ$ is unital, invertible and q-pure and $ν$ is any type II Powers weight, and secondly when $ϕ$ is a …
We describe the tube algebra and its representations in the cases of diagonal and Bisch-Haagerup subfactors possibly with a scalar 3-cocycle obstruction. We show that these categories are additively equivalent to the direct product over conjugacy classes of representation category of a centralizer subgroup (corresponding to the conjugacy class) twisted by a scalar 2-cocycle obtained from the 3-cocycle obstruction.
For an irreducible non-permutation matrix $A$, the triplet $({\mathcal{O}_A},{\mathcal{D}_A},ρ^A)$ for the Cuntz-Krieger algebra ${\mathcal{O}_A}$, its canonical maximal abelian $C^*$-subalgebra ${\mathcal{D}_A}$, and its gauge action $ρ^A$ is called the Cuntz-Krieger triplet. We introduce a notion of strong Morita equivalence in the Cuntz-Krieger triplets, and prove that two Cuntz-Krieger triplets $({\mathcal{O}_A},{\mathcal{D}_A},ρ^A)$ and $({\mathcal{O}_B},{\mathcal{D}_B},ρ^B)$ are strong Morita equivalent if and only if $A$ and $B$ are strong shift equivalent. We also show that the general…
We give a complete classification up to cocycle conjugacy of uniformly outer actions of Z^2 on UHF algebras. In particular, it is shown that any two uniformly outer actions of Z^2 on a UHF algebra of infinite type are cocycle conjugate. We also classify them up to outer conjugacy.
We show that two cocycle-conjugate endomorphisms of an arbitrary von Neumann algebra that satisfy certain stability conditions are conjugate endomorphisms, when restricted to some specific von Neumann subalgebras. As a consequence of this result, we obtain a new criterion for conjugacy of Powers shift endomorphisms acting on factors of type $\rm{I}\sb{\infty}.$
Let $A$ be a unital separable simple amenable $C^*$-algebra with finite tracial rank which satisfies the Universal Coefficient Theorem (UCT). Suppose $\af$ and $\bt$ are two automorphisms with the Rokhlin property that {induce the same action on the $K$-theoretical data of $A$.} We show that $\af$ and $\bt$ are strongly cocycle conjugate and uniformly approximately conjugate, that is, there exists a sequence of unitaries $\{u_n\}\subset A$ and a sequence of strongly asymptotically inner automorphisms $σ_n$ such that $$ \af={\rm Ad}\, u_n\circ σ_n\circ \bt\circ σ_n^{-1}\andeqn \lim_{n\to\infty}…
Let $Λ$ be a countably infinite property (T) group, and let $D$ be UHF-algebra of infinite type. We prove that there exists a continuum of pairwise non (weakly) cocycle conjugate, strongly outer actions of $Λ$ on $D$. The proof consists in assigning, to any second countable abelian pro-$p$ group $G$, a strongly outer action of $Λ$ on $D$ whose (weak) cocycle conjugacy class completely remembers the group $G$. The group $G$ is reconstructed from the action through its (weak) 1-cohomology set endowed with a canonical pairing function. Our construction also shows the following stronger statement:…
We have seen that if ϕ: M_n(\C) \rightarrow M_n(\C) is a unital q-positive map and νis a type II Powers weight, then the boundary weight double (ϕ, ν) induces a unique (up to conjugacy) type II_0 E_0-semigroup. Let ϕ: M_n(\C) \rightarrow M_n(\C) and ψ: M_{n'}(\C) \rightarrow M_{n'}(\C) be unital rank one q-positive maps, so for some states ρ\in M_n(\C)^* and ρ' \in M_{n'}(\C)^*, we have ϕ(A)=ρ(A)I_n and ψ(D) = ρ'(D)I_{n'} for all A \in M_n(\C) and D \in M_{n'}(\C). We find that if νand ηare arbitrary type II Powers weights, then (ϕ, ν) and (ψ, η) induce non-cocycle conjugate E_0-semigroups if …
This paper studies the relationship between minimal dynamical systems on the product of the Cantor set ($X$) and torus ($\T^2$) and their corresponding crossed product $C^*$-algebras. For the case when the cocycles are rotations, we studied the structure of the crossed product $C^*$-algebra $A$ by looking at a large subalgebra $A_x$. It is proved that, as long as the cocycles are rotations, the tracial rank of the crossed product $C^*$-algebra is always no more than one, which then indicates that it falls into the category of classifiable $C^*$-algebras. If a certain rigidity condition is sati…
We introduce four new cocycle conjugacy invariants for E_0-semigroups on II_1 factors: a coupling index, a dimension for the gauge group, a super product system and a C*-semiflow. Using noncommutative Itô integrals we show that the dimension of the gauge group can be computed from the structure of the additive cocycles. We do this for the Clifford flows and even Clifford flows on the hyperfinite II_1 factor, and for the free flows on the free group factor $L(F_\infty)$. In all cases the index is 0, which implies they have trivial gauge groups. We compute the super product systems for these fam…
A CP-semigroup is aligned if its set of trivially maximal subordinates is totally ordered by subordination. We prove that aligned spatial E_0-semigroups are prime: they have no non-trivial tensor product decompositions up to cocycle conjugacy. As a consequence, we establish the existence of uncountably many non-cocycle conjugate E_0-semigroups of type II_0 which are prime.
We study flows on C*-algebras with the Rokhlin property. We show that every Kirchberg algebra carries a unique Rokhlin flow up to cocycle conjugacy, which confirms a long-standing conjecture of Kishimoto. We moreover present a classification theory for Rokhlin flows on C*-algebras satisfying certain technical properties, which hold for many C*-algebras covered by the Elliott program. As a consequence, we obtain the following further classification theorems for Rokhlin flows. Firstly, we extend the statement of Kishimoto's conjecture to the non-simple case: Up to cocycle conjugacy, a Rokhlin fl…
We show an equivariant Kirchberg-Phillips-type absorption theorem for pointwise outer actions of discrete amenable groups on Kirchberg algebras with respect to natural model actions on the Cuntz algebras $\mathcal{O}_\infty$ and $\mathcal{O}_2$. This generalizes results known for finite groups and poly-$\mathbb{Z}$ groups. The model actions are shown to be determined, up to strong cocycle conjugacy, by natural abstract properties, which are verified for some examples of actions arising from tensorial shifts. We also show the following homotopy rigidity result, which may be understood as a prec…
We consider Z-actions (single automorphisms) on a unital simple AH algebra with real rank zero and slow dimension growth and show that the uniform outerness implies the Rohlin property under some technical assumptions. Moreover, two Z-actions with the Rohlin property on such a C^*-algebra are shown to be cocycle conjugate if they are asymptotically unitarily equivalent. We also prove that locally approximately inner and uniformly outer Z^2-actions on a unital simple AF algebra with a unique trace have the Rohlin property and classify them up to cocycle conjugacy employing the OrderExt group as…
We apply the Evans-Kishimoto type argument for centrally free actions of discrete amenable groups on McDuff factors, and classify them. Especially, we present a different proof that the Connes-Takesaki modules are complete cocycle conjugacy invariants for centrally free actions of discrete amenable groups on injective factors.
In this paper we consider a bootstrap class $\mathfrak C$ of countable discrete groups, which is closed under countable unions and extensions by the integers, and we study actions of such groups on C*-algebras. This class includes all torsion-free abelian groups, poly-$\mathbb Z$-groups, as well as other examples. Using the interplay between relative Rokhlin dimension and semi-strongly self-absorbing actions established in prior work, we obtain the following two main results for any group $Γ\in\mathfrak C$ and any strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra $\mathcal D$: (1) There is a unique strongly …
We will introduce the Rohlin property for flows on von Neumann algebras and classify them up to strong cocycle conjugacy. This result provides alternative approaches to some preceding results such as Kawahigashi's classification of flows on the injective type II$_1$ factor, the classification of injective type III factors due to Connes, Krieger and Haagerup and the non-fullness of type III$_0$ factors. Several concrete examples are also studied.
These lectures concern basic aspects of the theory of semigroups of endomorphisms of type $I$ factors that relate to causal dynamics, dilation theory, and the problem of classifying $E_0$-semigroups up to cocycle conjugacy. We give only a few proofs here; full details can be found in the author's upcoming monograph {\em Noncommutative Dynamics and $E$-semigroups}, to be published in the Springer series Monographs in Mathematics.
We present, for the first time, the result (from 2008) that (normal, strongly continuous) Markov semigroups on $\mathscr{B}(G)$ ($G$ a separable Hilbert space) admit a Hudson-Parthasarathy dilation (that is, a dilation to a cocycle perturbation of a noise) if and only if the Markov semigroup is spatial (that is, if it dominates an elementary CP-semigroup). The proof is by general abstract nonsense (taken from Arveson's classification of $E_0$-semigroups on $\mathscr{B}(H)$ by Arveson systems up to cocycle conjugacy) and not, as usual, by constructing the cocycle as a solution of a quantum stoc…
An $E_0$-semigroup of $B(H)$ is a one parameter strongly continuous semigroup of $*$-endomorphisms of $B(H)$ that preserve the identity. Every $E_0$-semigroup that possesses a strongly continuous intertwining semigroup of isometries is cocycle conjugate to an $E_0$-semigroup induced by the Bhat induction of a $CP$-flow over a separable Hilbert space $K$. We say an $E_0$-semigroup $α$ is $q$-pure if the $CP$-subordinates $β$ of norm one (i.e. $\Vertβ_t(I)\Vert = 1$ and $α_t-β_t$ is completely positive for all $t \geq 0$) are totally ordered in the sense that if $β$ and $γ$ are two $CP$-subordin…
We show that, up to strong cocycle conjugacy, every countable exact group admits a unique equivariantly $\mathcal{O}_2$-absorbing, pointwise outer action on the Cuntz algebra $\mathcal{O}_2$ with the quasi-central approximation property (QAP). In particular, we establish the equivariant analogue of the Kirchberg $\mathcal{O}_2$-absorption theorem for these groups.
In this paper we study modular extendability and equimodularity of endomorphisms and E$_0$-semigroups on factors with respect to f.n.s. weights. We show that modular extendability is a property that does not depend on the choice of weights, it is a cocycle conjugacy invariant and it is preserved under tensoring. We say that a modularly extendable E$_0$-semigroup is of type EI, EII or EIII if its modular extension is of type I, II or III, respectively. We prove that all types exist on properly infinite factors. We also compute the coupling index and the relative commutant index for the CAR flow…
In the 2002 AMS summer conference on ``Advances in Quantum Dynamics'' in Mount Holyoke Robert Powers proposed a sum operation for spatial E0-semigroups. Still during the conference Skeide showed that the Arveson system of that sum is the product of spatial Arveson systems. This product may but need not coincide with the tensor product of Arveson systems. The Powers sum of two spatial E0-semigroups is, therefore, up to cocycle conjugacy Skeide's product of spatial noises.
In this last article of the series on outer actions of a countable dicrete amenable group on AFD factors, we analyze outer actions of a countable discrete free abelian group on an AFD factor of type $\text{III}_λ$, $0<λ< 1$, and compute outer conjugacy invariants. As a byproduct, we discover the asymmetrization technique for coboundary condition on a $\Bbb T$-valued cocycle of a torsion free abelian group, which might have been known by the group cohomologists. As the asymmetrization technique gives us a very handy criteria for coboundaries, we present it here in detail in the second section.
Let $C^*(\cls)$ be the $C^*$ algebra generated by an operator system $\cls$ i.e. a unital $*$-closed subspace of a unital $C^*$ algebra $\cla$. We prove that any complete order isomorphism $\cli:\cls \raro \cls'$ between two such operator systems of matrix algebras has a unique extension to a $C^*$-isomorphism $\cli:C^*(\cls) \raro C^*(\cls')$. However, the same statement with more general operator systems of infinite dimensional $C^*$-algebra is false. As an application of this result, we characterise upto cocycle conjugacy the extreme points of unital completely positive maps on matrix algeb…
Let B be a sigma-unital C*-algebra. We show that every strongly continuous E_0-semigroup on the algebra of adjointable operators on a full Hilbert B-module E gives rise to a full continuous product system of correspondences over B. We show that every full continuous product system of correspondences over B arises in that way. If the product system is countably generated, then E can be chosen countable generated, and if E is countably generated, then so is the product system. We show that under these countability hypotheses there is a one-to-one correspondence between E_0-semigroup up to stable…
It is known that every semigroup of normal completely positive maps of a von Neumann can be ``dilated" in a particular way to an E_0-semigroup acting on a larger von Neumann algebra. The E_0-semigroup is not uniquely determined by the completely positive semigroup; however, it is unique (up to conjugacy) provided that certain conditions of {\it minimality} are met. Minimality is a subtle property, and it is often not obvious if it is satisfied for specific examples even in the simplest case where the von Neumann algebra is $\Cal B(H)$. In this paper we clarify these issues by giving a new char…
We begin this note with a von Neumann algebraic version of the elementary but extremely useful fact about being able to extend inner-product preserving maps from a total set of the domain Hilbert space to an isometry defined on the entire domain. This leads us to the notion of when `good' endomorphisms of a factorial probability space $(M,ϕ)$ (which we call equi-modular) admit a natural extension to endomorphisms of $L^2(M,ϕ)$. We exhibit examples of such extendable endomorphisms. We then pass to $E_0$-semigroups $α= {α_t: t \geq 0}$ of factors, and observe that extendability of this semigroup…
